“In the south it's always more dynamic. Everyone is just moving around all the time. In the north, it's slower. People are a bit meaner.” - Viet AnhFor nearly ten years now, I've called Vietnam home, and while I've experienced the incredible energy and warmth of the south, Viet Anh's perspective on the north offered a viewpoint I hadn't fully considered. It's fascinating how regional differences can shape the experience of living in the same country. We touched on the sometimes-surprising toxicity that can bubble up online, both within expat communities and among Vietnamese internet users. It's a stark contrast to the welcoming spirit I've largely encountered here. We also reflected on how things change over time – from cinema etiquette to the increasing polarization of opinions, it feels like the Vietnam I first encountered is constantly evolving.Key Takeaways:- There are perceived significant differences in pace and demeanor between the north and south of Vietnam.- Online toxicity is a notable issue within expat and Vietnamese online communities.- Cultural norms and perspectives are constantly evolving in Vietnam.- Stereotypes about foreigners in Vietnam, particularly English teachers, exist and need to be addressed.- The economic contribution of foreigners in Vietnam is often misunderstood, with many filling roles that locals don't typically pursue.Chapters and Timestamps:05:59: Discussion on Online Toxicity    10:59: Changing Perspectives and Behaviors Over Time    14:59: Stereotypes of Foreigners in Vietnam    24:00: Economic Contributions of Foreign Workers    "Send me a message!"The Podcast Launch LabThe Podcast Makeover Try Descript for free here!Support the show

In this episode, I share the idea that judgment acts as a mirror, reflecting our internal beliefs and feelings. We all have our own internal representation of the world, and each person perceives the world through a unique lens shaped by experiences, values, and emotions. This leads to the realization that trying to change someone else's perspective can be a waste of energy, as they are likely operating from their own internal map of the world.  The judgments we fear from others often stem from our self-judgment. Judgment can trigger unresolved beliefs within us, and I emphasize the importance of self-compassion and forgiveness in overcoming these feelings. Reframing our triggers and approaching others with curiosity instead of criticism can foster empathy and understanding. Are you somebody who really cares about wildlife and conservation and you're trying to get people to change their behavior? Reduce their carbon footprint? Get them to not litter? Or keep their cats indoors to save birds? Whether it's getting people to switch to clean energy sources or eating less meat to help save the planet, all of these things all require human behavior change, and the foundation of such change is communication. A lot of people tend to think we just need to educate people more - that people have a deficiency in knowledge, and that if only we could get people to understand the data and studies like we do, then they would see the error in their ways. But as we've seen with well-researched topics with lots of supporting data and studies like climate change and vaccines, this is not true. There is more to it! We need effective communication, which requires dialogue. This week's podcast is inspired by two events: (1) the results of the 2024 election here in the United States where we saw the public vote for an administration that is anti-environment and science and (2) the aftermath of me reading an eye-opening, enlightening, and highly entertaining book on the subject of rethinking by social scientist Adam Grant: Think Again. In this episode I talk about how to be a more effective communicator, get people to rethink their opinions and values (including yourself!), and teach you how to have productive, engaging, and useful debates with people who think, at times, very differently than you. I am living proof it is possible! The lessons shared largely come from the book Think Again, but also my own personal experience engaging with and even being friends with people from “the other side.” You'll learn how to reframe your perspective on arguments so you don't feel exhausted, angry, or drained, how effective listening is critical in debate, and how providing nuance, multiple perspectives, and humility can make you more effective in changing minds. Often when we talk about working with wildlife, we think about it from the animal's perspective and studying the species, but in reality, almost all of the conservation solutions with declining biodiversity have to do with interventions on the human side. Want to save wolves? We need to reduce poaching. Want to save monarchs? We need to get people to plant more milk weed and reduce habitat loss. These things require interventions on the human side. So if you are someone who works in science or conservation, or are simply someone who wants to create more positive change in the world, then this episode is for you!Specifically I talk about: Why it's important to engage in debate and that it doesn't have to be hostile, exhausting, or heatedHow debate makes us stronger leaders and better scientistsHow spirited discussions helped Disney create Pixar's The Incredibles that went on to win two OscarsHow to reframe arguments into debates and learn how to dance rather than fightCommon “don'ts” and mistakes that many people make that close people off and cause them to dig more into their original beliefsHow to motivate someone to share information with youWhy facts alone don't work in changing mindsThat asking questions activates a rethinking cycle in your debate partner (and yourself!)Why listening is critical to getting people to open up and be receptiveHow the “vaccine whisperer” got people to vaccinate their children through non-judgemental empowerment and listeningThat binary or black and white thinking can actually cause people to move away from your causeHow uncertainty and humility can make you more effective in changing mindsAnd more!Dream of being a wildlife biologist, zoologist, conservation biologist, or ecologist? "I never understood I was different until the world told me I was."This episode Linda's story is an incredible journey through culture, identity, and compassion. It is not just unique—it's deeply inspiring and thought-provoking. Hearing about her experiences navigating dual identities as someone seen as Asian in the West and white in Asia really made me appreciate the complexity of cultural perception. Her passion for preserving her heritage, speaking multiple languages, and embracing both her Swedish and Vietnamese roots was eye-opening.What struck me the most was her work in animal welfare, which is so close to her heart. Her dedication to making a difference for animals in Vietnam, despite the challenges, shows such a profound level of empathy and determination. This episode left me reflecting on how our roots shape us, but it's our choices and compassion that truly define who we are. – Niall Mackay5 Key Takeaways (With Timestamps)Navigating Dual Identities - Linda's experience of being perceived as "Asian" in the West and "white" in Asia highlights the complexities of cultural identity. The Power of Language - Speaking four languages, Linda attributes her mother's insistence on preserving heritage as a critical part of her identity. The Refugee Story That Inspires - Linda's mother's 10-year struggle as a refugee showcases unparalleled resilience and the importance of familial sacrifices.Changing Perspectives on Pets in Vietnam - The cultural shift from seeing animals as property to considering them family members is a sign of evolving attitudes in Vietnam.Advocating for Animal Welfare - Linda's rescue efforts underline the importance of education and sustainable alternatives to end harmful practices.Episode Chapters02:00 – Growing Up Half-Swedish, Half-Vietnamese in Finland. How can someone recognize when bitterness is taking a toll on their life and relationships?  In what ways can military spouses balance the demands of military life with self-care and maintaining friendships, even with distance involved? How might maintaining these connections positively impact their mental health and family life?  How can a change in perspective help military spouses navigate feelings of loss, resentment, or inequality in responsibilities? What strategies can help shift perspective from bitterness to personal growth?  Why is community support so crucial for military families, and what are some effective ways to build a support network? How can this support network contribute to overcoming isolation and fostering resilience?

As homeschooling grows, so does the conversation about how education is defined. Join Dr. Timberly Baker (Associate Professor of Educational Leadership at Arkansas State University) and Jim Mason, HSLDA President, in a discussion on challenging the traditional view of schooling. Many prospective and novice homeschool families can feel insurmountable pressure to create a structured, 8-to-3 schedule. This doesn't need to be! Parents are their child's first teacher, guiding their learning every day! Learning can (and does!) take place anywhere, and a rigid schedule isn't required. The possibilities of homeschooling are endless, and each student's experience is unique. “I often say that we are our children's first teacher. So you've already done much of this work in terms of teaching them what you think that they need to know. You do it all the time anyway! We have to disrupt our thinking that schooling happens in this sort of 8 to 3 structure only, and that if it's not that, then it's not a school, right? And so, once we get to helping folks disrupt that notion, then it becomes a much broader conversation about the possibility of being able to homeschool”—Dr. Timberly Baker
