Text: Ecclesiastes 9   The Unfailing Hand of God's Providence (9:1) As we consider our lives, the future often seems uncertain and unpredictable. Therefore, we must rest our lives in God's sovereignty and trust in His promises.   The Inescapable Reality of Our Death (9:2-6) Death is the great leveler and the inevitable event for all mankind. Therefore, we still have hope while we live if we will trust in the salvation of Christ.   The Meaningful Enjoyment of God's Gifts (9:7-10) In this life, God has given us wonderful gifts to enjoy that we do not deserve. In view of our death, we learn to rightly assess and appreciate what God has given to us.   The Trustworthy Nature of God's Wisdom (9:11-18) When we view life under the sun, it seems uncertain, unpredictable, and unrewarding. When we view life from God's perspective, we see how His wisdom surpasses everything else.

A Philosophy of Grief | Mikołaj Sławkowski-Rode, PhD

Death and grief are much more “hidden” from society today than they once were. The medicalization of dying means that death now occurs more frequently in hospitals and care facilities than at homes. The secularization of society means that traditional religious or communal rituals surrounding death and mourning have diminished. The fast pace and optimistic lens of consumer culture means less contemplation of aging, mortality, and grief. But Mikołaj Sławkowski-Rode, PhD, a professor of philosophy at the University of Warsaw and research fellow at Oxford University, argues that experiences of mourning and grief are crucial to the human condition. They allow us to foster empathy and connect with others' suffering. They encourage us to reflect on how we value life, relationships, and the responsibilities we have towards others, both living and deceased. They revitalize communal rituals and practices, creating a sense of shared humanity.Professor Sławkowski-Rode has written widely on the philosophical and ethical dimensions of mourning, grief, and memory, and his works have appeared in The New York Times as well as various academic publications. Over the course of our conversation, we discuss the nature of grief as a multifaceted emotional response, extending beyond a psychological state and reaching into existential realms; the role of memory in the grieving process; why love and grief are fundamentally inseparable; how the atomization of modern society affects our ability to mourn; and more. In this episode, you'll hear about: 3:20 - The focus of Sławkowski-Rode's current work and what his day looks like as a philosopher8:10 - The value of philosophy in society 12:42 - How Sławkowski-Rode became inspired to study grief14:57 - Why grief has become more “hidden” in society over the past century23:49 - How the “cult of individuality” leads our society to ignore aging and death 33:45 - How Sławkowski-Rode defines “human flourishing”36:31 - How the atomization of modern society affects our ability to mourn  50:00 - Practical advices for clinicians on how to navigate grief and mourning for themselves and their patients Mikołaj Sławkowski-Rode is the author of the New York Times op ed It's OK to Never ‘Get Over' Your Grief and numerous academic publications.Dr. Sławkowski-Rode can be found on Twitter/X at @MikolajRode.Works and past episodes discussed:The Hours of Our Death by Philipe AriesEpisode 21: Pain, Pleasure and Finding the Balance | Anna Lembke, MDVisit our website www.TheDoctorsArt.com where you can find transcripts of all episodes. If you enjoyed this episode, please subscribe, rate, and review our show, available for free on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Today I will be sharing Rumi's poem "Our Death is Our Wedding with Eternity". Rumi was a Sufi poet, writer, and philosopher. Sufism is a set of traditions and practices originating from Islam. Many Sufis express their faith through music and art, like the whirling dervishes. Our death is our wedding with eternity. What is the secret? “God is One.” The sunlight splits when entering the windows of the house. This multiplicity exists in the cluster of grapes; It is not in the juice made from the grapes. For he who is living in the Light of God, The death of the carnal soul is a blessing. Regarding him, say neither bad nor good, For he is gone beyond the good and the bad. Fix your eyes on God and do not talk about what is invisible, So that he may place another look in your eyes. It is in the vision of the physical eyes That no invisible or secret thing exists. But when the eye is turned toward the Light of God What thing could remain hidden under such a Light? Although all lights emanate from the Divine Light Don't call all these lights “the Light of God”; It is the eternal light which is the Light of God, The ephemeral light is an attribute of the body and the flesh. …Oh God who gives the grace of vision! The bird of vision is flying towards You with the wings of desire. Dedicated to my Uncle Valiant who recently passed from COVID-19.

FCC Vision Statement: Building on Exposition, Centering on Christ, Dying in Community, Serving on Mission Romans 7:1-4 1 Or do you not know, brothers—for I am speaking to those who know the law—that the law is binding on a person only as long as he lives? 2 For a married woman is bound by law to her husband while he lives, but if her husband dies she is released from the law of marriage. 3 Accordingly, she will be called an adulteress if she lives with another man while her husband is alive. But if her husband dies, she is free from that law, and if she marries another man she is not an adulteress. 4 Likewise, my brothers, you also have died to the law through the body of Christ, so that you may belong to another, to him who has been raised from the dead, in order that we may bear fruit for God. If with Christ you died to the elemental spirits of the world why, as if you were still alive in the world, do you submit to regulations -- “Do not handle, Do not taste, Do not touch” (referring to things that all perish as they are used)--according to human precepts and teachings? These have indeed an appearance of wisdom in promoting self-made religion and asceticism and severity to the body, but they are of no value in stopping the indulgence of the flesh.” (Colossians 2:20-23)Let me paraphrase this text. If what you are doing is not working in stopping the indulgence of the flesh, then it is man-made wisdom and it is not the power of the gospel. The gospel includes us in the death of Jesus Christ. The good news here is that we no longer have to rely upon asceticism or self-made religion to overcome the flesh. It is not a matter of how disciplined or faithful we are. The assumption, through the gospel, is that we died with Christ to the elemental spirits of the world! This means the rules that govern other people such as “do not handle, do not taste”...no longer apply to the redeemed of God! We've died to that old system and been born again into a higher law! The law of love! We are now hard-wired for righteousness which means we don't need an external system of do's and don'ts to control us. We have the Holy Spirit of God leading and guiding us into all truth, freedom and holiness! “If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ who is your life appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.” (Colossians 3:1-4)Notice that the death, resurrection and return of Christ is the anchor point for all instructions in the gospel. God gives us instructions on the wake of us seeing Jesus and being joined to him at each step of his work and life. Many Christians are still struggling with their flesh because they have not seen the power of the cross. The assumption made in Colossians 2:20 is that Christ's death has become our own. Our sinful, lustful flesh has been co-crucified with Christ. This is something that took place 2000 years ago that we are NOW invited to partake of by faith. When we finally accept this fact that the death of Jesus Christ was also OUR DEATH, we will finally begin to experience the freedom promised to us in the New Covenant. In addition to this wonderful truth, the Bible also teaches us that Jesus' ascension to heaven is also an invitation to us to partake of this resurrection. We have been raised and seated with Christ in heavenly places. Partaking of this union gives us permission to seek the things that are above. To set our minds on things that are above. I believe the remedy for a lot of the anxiety, stress and fear that many believers are currently experiencing is found in these few verses. We have the power to set our minds on heavenly things or on earthly things. I was so impresssed with Yngve Nedrebø, the Chief archivist at Riksarkivet (National Archives of Norway) who I recently interviewed for the Family Tree Magazine podcast that I'm publishing an extended version of that interview here on the Genealgoy Gems Podcast. This is a "must hear" for those with Norwegian heritage. In this episode you'll also hear from a fellow listener and get a chance to see his family history tour that he created in Google Earth using the techniques I teach in the Google Earth for Genealogy video CD series. And we'll get a taste of the history of coffee. Linda from Ventura Seminar writes in about her recent success: “I just loved your presentation Saturday at the Ventura Genealogy Seminar.  I learned so much and feel very enthused to really get to work on all this.  In fact I was so encouraged I got brave and called a telephone number that I had found for a possible 1st cousin, once removed.  And surprise, it was him and we had a lovely 30-minute conversation and I'm going to send him information and he and his wife invited me to Florida to visit!!  How about that.  It was so exciting, still haven't gotten over it.” Linda said that she was encouraged enough to get brave and make that telephone call. That can be a pretty scary thing. We all have things that we need a bit of bravery to do. And that brings me to an important question that I posed in the most recent edition of the free Genealogy Gems Newsletter. Having you taken a technological RISK lately? This was the key question I posed in the newsletter: Are you fully embracing technology so that you can connect with those that matter to you, both living and in your family tree? There's not as much RISK as you might think. As I always say in my classes: "you can't break it, so go for it and give it a try!" And of course Genealogy Gems is here to help.   MAILBOX: Eric shares his Google Earth Family History Tour: “This is my most complex Google Earth Project ever.   I hope you enjoy it.  It's really been a hit with my family.  They don't glaze over right away, LOL!  After viewing it I couldn't help but wonder if there was video out there. And sure enough I found a few. I'm sure there are more with potential: B17s taking off from Podington:  Focke-Wulf Fw 190: YouTube video update: If you've had trouble embedding videos recently in your own family history tours, or genealogy blog, it's actually YouTube that is causing the problem. If you look closely at the YouTube embed code they are (for some unknown reason) leaving off the "http:" and so the code doesn't work. Copy and paste the embed code into a Google Earth placemark and then correct the URL so it is complete and it will work for you. (Do note though that the person who uploaded the video can opt not to allow it to be embedded. If that's the case, there will be a statement on the video page)   Cameron is Looking for Death Certificates “I am 23 year old recent graduate of nursing school and a huge fan of your Genealogy Gems podcast. I've been researching my family history for about 5 years off and on, and I've discovered more than I've ever imagined. I've been listening two your show for about 3 months now after I discovered it, and I appreciate all of the helpful tips. However, I still have a little problem. I can't seem to find the maiden name of one of my recent ancestors Sallie Mosley. She was born in 1863, I assume in Emanuel County, Georgia. She married James Mosley in the 1880's. I know that the courthouse in Emanuel county burned several times, so that could be why I can't find a marriage record. I have found a death certificate on Ancestry, but isn't very detailed unless you order the certificate. If I visited the courthouse, could they possible dig up a detailed death certificate?”   From Lisa: I ran a quick Google search and found the following on the "Death certificates are open to the public. You must be a member of the immediate family to acquire a death certificate with the cause of death. Our Death certificates on the local level begin at 1927 and back to 1917 in our state office." So depending on when she died they may be able to be of help.  I would also recommend contacting local historical and genealogical societies. They often have the inside scoop on what's available and how to access it locally. A quick Google search should help you make contact. Run the search in Google Earth and it will plot them out for you on the map!   GEM: Norwegian Genealogy and the National Archives of Norway One of the shining stars on the Internet that offer rays of research hope for those with Norwegian heritage is the National Archives of Norway's Digital Archive. Lisa's special guest: Yngve Nedrebø, Chief archivist at Riksarkivet.    GEM: Wartime Coffee Bean Counting Given what seems to be the ever-growing profusion of coffee vendors, imagine what a crisis it would be if coffee were suddenly rationed. That's exactly what happened this month in 1942 because the war had interrupted shipments and people were hoarding coffee. But rationing lasted only until the next summer. It's thought that coffee was introduced into America by Captain John Smith, one of the founders of the Jamestown Colony in Virginia. Its popularity jumped after both the Boston Tea Party and the beginning of Prohibition. For those who don't make their own coffee, there are just over 19,000 coffee shops across the country, and they sell more than $10 billion worth of coffee a year. You can find more facts about America from the U.S. Census Bureau, online at . Sources:
