Dr. Pat Parfrey is taking over as CEO of Newfoundland and Labrador Health Services. He talked about why he took the position and his plans going forward.
There's a new boss in charge of health care in Newfoundland and Labrador. But he's a familiar face and voice to many of us. Dr. Pat Parfrey has been a kidney specialist and epidemiologist, but most recently, you will remember him as co-chair of Health Accord NL. Last Thursday, he was appointed as the new CEO of NL Health Services.
In Part 3 of Flanigan's Eco-Logic - Climate Resolve Series, Ted speaks with Jonathan Parfrey, Founder and Executive Director at Climate Resolve, LA's leading climate advocacy organization, committed to local climate solutions to reduce greenhouse gases and improve the lives of Angelenos. Just back from New York Climate Week, he jumps right into his highlights from all the events, sharing that it was great to see a large California contingent there. Climate Resolve hosted an event that demonstrated bouncing sunlight back into space to help curb the greenhouse effect, raising greater awareness of the radiative forcing benefits of cool surfaces. In addition to the actions they have taken to curb the heat island effect and keep LA cool, Ted and Jonathan also discuss LADWP's dilemma (where Jonathan served as a commissioner from 2008-2013), and the tension of reaching 100% carbon free electric delivery by 2035, especially with the potential for using green hydrogen in peaker plants. They also discuss nonprofits' role in electoral campaigns, specifically Climate Resolve's stance on Proposition 4, and the best way to protect folks from heat waves.Jonathan concludes by sharing the numerous plans that Climate Resolve has helped develop for LA, including the LA County Climate Vulnerability Assessment, the LA County Sustainability Plan, the Long Beach Climate Action and Adaptation Plan, the California Climate Adaptation Planning Guide, and the Fourth California Climate Change Assessment. He shares the difference between planning and implementation, and what his feelings are between the two approaches.
Two doctors say maintaining and improving health and well-being now may help you avoid getting sick at all. Dr. Pat Parfrey and Dr. Sean Connors were in Corner Brook for a Community Well-Being Fair. They talked about some of what's referred to as "social determinants" of health. Parfrey is deputy minister of health transformation with the provincial government, and Connors is clinical chief of cardiac care with NL Health Services.

With the limited run up to the season due to various constraints, Dan and Pete knew that the first five weeks of the season would have a "pre-season flair" to them. Now as every side has had the chance to get into Rugby shape we're starting to know some things about where the 2021 season is going. Patrick Parfrey, Canadian International, and PhD Candidate joins the show. Following the 2019 World Cup he took some time off to pay attention to his studies in Clinical Epidemiology and like the COVID-19 Pandemic cut short the 2020 MLR season it also postponed his return to an Arrows shirt. He joins the show following his Player of the Week performance against the Seattle Seawolves to discuss the season and the Arrows adjustment to life in Atlanta. Subscribe to America Adapts on Itunes! In this episode, America Adapts talks with innovative climate leader, Jonathan Parfrey, the Executive Director of Climate Resolve (CR). The mission of Climate Resolve “is to make Southern California more livable and prosperous today and for generations to come by inspiring people at home, at work, and in government to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and local air pollution, as well as prepare for climate change impacts.” Jonathan talks about how CR approaches climate change at the city scale, with the goal of not only making Los Angeles more resilient in the face of climate change, but also improving the overall quality of life of Angelos. It is not a typical mission for most adaptation professionals,, but as Jonathan explains, it’s a strategy that successfully gets broad public support for their activities. Learn about CR’s “Cool Roofs” program, a citywide program to help low income residents obtain solar panels. Jonathan also talks about efforts to create a more integrated and green transportation system for Los Angeles. We also learn about specific climate change impacts that Los Angeles is currently experiencing, and also, future impacts. Climate Resolve emphasizes partnerships and they have assumed a major role in bringing together regional partners in these efforts. What really stands out is the proactive approach the city of Los Angeles is taking on these issue, along with the state of California providing substantial support for cities to address climate change. Hopefully what happens in California will spread across the country. The state truly is an incubator for cutting edge climate change planning. There’s a lot more, so have a listen to Jonathan tell Climate Resolve’s story. Finally, yes, most of your favorite podcasts are supported by listeners just like you! Adam Parfrey’s fearless publishing style has lead to an invaluable contribution to the modern literary world – he dares to venture where few men dare, releasing information to the world that is absolutely priceless. Known for his risqué and unconventional choice in books, their content and subject-matter provide insight and illumination into topics that the general public, for the most part, has never stumbled upon or even heard of. Parfrey aside for now though, this West of The Rockies episode focuses on a very particular book, namely, Sex and Rockets: The Occult World of Jack Parsons, written by John Carter (alongside a rather insightful and entertaining foreword by Robert Anton Wilson). Jack Parsons was a rocket scientist, inarguably the most significant and influential rocket scientist to have walked this Earth. Though oft overlooked in history and popular media, his works and inventions are essentially the entire basis for NASA’s successful rocket program. He was an eccentric, daring and fearless man, co-founder of Jet Propulsion Laboratory, and an absolute genius whose experimentations lead to the invention of rocket fuel, helping the allies to win WWII. When not engaging with rockets and explosives, however, Parsons lead a secret life of underground occultism, associating with the likes of Aleister Crowley and L. Ron Hubbard, engaging in sex-magick rituals, and, most incredibly, signing an oath asserting himself to be the Antichrist (and in fact genuinely believing so). Interesting, or perhaps more frighteningly, Parsons decided to invoke the Devil at the mere age of thirteen, performing a ritual in his bedroom (which is commonly believed to have been successful), and rather unsurprisingly frightening himself to such an extent, that he ceased to pursue his bizarre occult interests for quite some time.
Tom Bowman talks with the director of Climate Resolve about greening America’s second largest city. Listen Now “How Can LA Become a Model for Global Action?”
In The Quimby's Bookstore Podcast episode #8, we have two interviews. The first one is with Adam Parfrey, publisher of Feral House and Process Books, which comprise some of the books Quimby's carries that have to do with miscreants, mayhem, outer limits, conspiracy theory and the occult like Apocalypse Culture vols 1 and 2, American Hardcore: A Tribal History, Cult Rapture: Revelations of the Apocalyptic Mind and more. Specifically in this interview, Parfrey talks about Ritual America: Secret Brotherhoods and Their Influence on American Society: A Visual Guide, which he wrote with Craig Heimbichner. It's a beautiful, scrapbooky-ish title with hundreds of images regarding secret societies like the Freemasons and Oddfellows. There's ads for things like Masonic supply companies, cartoons lampooning Masonic "ritual" and more. We talked with Parfrey about he difference between cults and religions, the fine line between frat and subculture, the forces of sex and death how people just want to belong to something, and the burning question: "Shriners: philanthoropists or sadistic clowns?".Here's the Freemason symbol (yeah, yeah, we know you know what it is -- it's just that we referenced it in the interview and said we would post it):The second interview in this episode is with Peter Sotos. Feral House published the book Pure Filth, which Sotos edited. It's an annotated collection of transcripts culled and transcribed by Sotos, from the underground pornography films of the late Jamie Gillis (who whom Sotos was friends with). Gillis was a primary performer in pornography’s “Golden Age,” and is known for inventing the “gonzo” genre of porn, played out in the film Boogie Nights by Burt Reynolds’ character, who was based on Gillis. The work of extreme novelist Peter Sotos focuses on criminal psychology, sexual abjection, and the myriad aspects of pornography. He's the author of 11 published novels, including Index, Selfish, Little: The Annotated Lesley Ann Downey. His writing has appeared in ANSWER Me!, Apocalypse Culture II, Funeral Party, and Ritual Sex.
