观众为何向花样滑冰运动员扔毛绒玩具?|Why Do People Throw Stuffed Animals at Figure Skaters?Moments after a figure skater finishes their program, adoring fans fling gifts onto the ice. There have definitely been some weird ones over the years. As NBC Sports reports, Sasha Cohen was once given multiple cashmere sweaters; Canada's Elvis Stojko and Patrick Chan have walked away with lingerie; and Debi Thomas even got a box of Domino's pizza after her performance at the 1987 world championships. (Another skater, Doug Mattis, had tossed it onto the rink because Thomas had jokingly wondered why people “don't throw something good, like pizza?”) Carbs and clothing aside, the post-program offerings are mostly stuffed animals. Though it's not clear exactly how or when this custom began, there are a couple of factors that help explain why it's so popular. First and foremost, flowers, once the go-to item to toss at skaters, are messy. The “sweepers”—the kids who skate around collecting all the gifts between each program—have a much easier time grabbing plush toys than scrabbling at every petal and leaf that fell off its flower. There's no global ban on chucking bouquets, but organizations have made attempts to discourage the practice in the past. In 1989, US Figure Skating banned arenas hosting national championships from selling flowers. And ahead of the 2002 national championships, the association outright prohibited fans from bringing their own flowers (and other items) to the arena at all. Flowers have always been a problem. Even when they're wrapped, the staples pop out and become a hazard,” Larry Kriwanek, chair of the event's organizing committee, told the Los Angeles Times. “Flowers were going to be eliminated. It was just a question of when.” Instead, fans could purchase already-authorized stuffed animals inside the arena and shower their favorite skaters with those. Stuffed animals also give supporters an opportunity to choose presents that seem more personal. "We sometimes will get stuffed animals made in custom costumes to match what we're wearing,” American ice dancer Meryl Davis, who won gold with partner Charlie White in 2014, told NBC Sports. It turns out that skaters often do try to take especially meaningful or thoughtful gifts home with them. Note: Olympic Winter Games Beijing 2022has cancelled the toy throwing part of the figure skating events due to the guidelines on pandemic preventionand control.

Most elite athletes are perfectionists… and Patrick Chan admits he is no different.  His drive to learn and succeed and, since retirement, he has a new appreciation for what is required to move into the next chapter of his life.  While he hopes skating will always play a significant role, Patrick is open to developing new skills and searching for his next great challenge.

Keegan Messing is serious about having fun. His goal is Olympic gold in figure skating, but that doesn't stop him from dreaming up a new Olympic contest. His idea is three kinds of skaters — speed, hockey, and figures — all duking it out in tests of overall skating supremacy. Unlikely, but fun idea, right? He is no stranger to unlikely plans. Born in rural Alaska, in a home with no running water, a young Keegan watched a DVD of Canadian figure skating great Elvis Stojko and knew that a men's singles Olympic gold medal was exactly what he wanted. He quickly figured out that Team Canada was going to be his best way to get there and having a Canadian mother opened the eligibility door. Like many Alaskans, the 27-year-old is at home in the outdoors. He can fix his own cars and dirt bikes with the best of them. His career makes him a jet-setter, but his heart sings when he's way off the grid. What sets Messing apart is the power he brings to performance on the ice. Coming up in the Patrick Chan years, Keegan's intense strength and jumping ability almost feels like a throwback to a previous era. He is in the driver's seat now as Canada's top male skater. Working hard and having fun every step of the way.

1. Hello Lulu, so give us a briefing about what happened in Sochi yesterday? Six gold medals were given out yesterday, with the main focus on figure skating. The gold medal of pairs free skating was awarded to the famous and unbeatable Russian pair Maxim Trankov and Tatiana Volosozhar. This is the host nation Russia's second gold medal. And the gold medal for men's 1000m speedskating ended up in the pocket of 32-year-old Stefan Groothuis, the result took everybody by surprise even including himself. His victory handed Netherlands its fourth gold medal from five speed skating events. Meanwhile, Slovenia's Tina MAZE and Swiss athlete Domimique Gisin recorded the exact same time of 1 minute 41.57 seconds in the ladies downhill, the first time in the history of the Olympic Games in which two gold medals have been awarded in an alpine skiing event. So after day five, Germany has jumped to the the top of the medals ranking with 6 golds, and one silver. In the second place is Canada, with 4 golds, 4 silvers and 2 bronzes and Norway has slipped to the third place with 4 golds, 3 silvers and 5 bronzes. 2. How did China do yesterday? In the event of women's snowboard halfpipe, Chinese athlete Cai Xuetong ranked 6TH in the final, and Li shuang and Liu Jiayu ranked 8th and 9th respectively. In the event of pair free skating, figure skating athletes PANG Qing, TONG Jian ranked 4th while Peng Cheng and Zhang Hao ranked 8th. This is Pang Qing and Tong Jian's last Olympics as the couple are both 34 years old. In curling, the Chinese men's team beat Switzerland and Germany 5-4 and 11-7. China's men's curling team faced its toughest test so far but maintained its unbeaten start to the competition with a 5-4 win against reigning European champion Switzerland in the morning session, and beat Germany 11-7 in the evening. It is the first time China's men's team has won four round-robin games in an Olympic Winter Games curling competition. The women's team also won yesterday's game against the United States 7-4. 3. Can you give us a preview of the Games for Monday? Six gold medals will be contested on Thursday, which also sees the favourites in the men's ice hockey tournament play their opening matches. China is most hopeful to get a medal in the short track ladies 500m final. Meanwhile, Biathlete Martin Fourcade seeks his second gold medal of the Games in the men's 20km individual, following his victory on Monday in the 12.5km pursuit. Gold medals will also be at stake in men's slopestyle skiing, a new Olympic event at these Games, ladies 1000m Speedskating, Cross country women's 10km classic, and the luge team relay, another new event. The men's figure skating also starts today, with three-times world champion Patrick CHAN renewing his rivalry with Evgeni PLUSHENKO, the 2006 Olympic champion and gold medallist in Sunday's team event, in the short programme.
