Niek voltooide de dirigentenopleiding aan het Conservatorium van Amsterdam. Aan het conservatorium van Utrecht studeerde hij cum laude af voor klassiek zang. Hij zong in een groot aantal jeugdopera's zoals: Tantes, 4 Musketiers, Ruimtevlucht en Roodhapje. Niek dirigeerde o.a. Jonathan Dove's The Day After, Orfeo Underground en Divorce of Figaro. In de zomer van 2020 componeerde Niek zijn eerste opera: Vliegende Hollander. Hiervoor werd hij genomineerd voor de Matthijs Vermeulenprijs. In 2021 componeerde hij Dwaalhuis, een kameropera om dementie voor kinderen en jongeren bespreekbaar te maken. Som afslutning på den adventskalender, som blev sendt de fire søndage i advent markerer Tidsånd julen med en form for Jesus-meditation, som tager udgangspunkt i Peter Høegs læsning af Thomas-evangeliet.

Fjerde søndag i advent overvejer de to hvad kærlighed egentlig er, spirituelt set og hvordan den hænger sammen med kroppen. De forsøger at nå dybt ind i kernen af Thomas-evangeliet og betragter Jesus som en oplyst mester, som har revolutioneret verden med sine radikale indsigter. Peter Høeg varmer op til julen med endnu en praksis, denne gang med fokus på fred og kærlighed.

Tredje søndag i advent handler om videregivelse. Både i julens tradition for gavegivning, men også i mere social forstand. I alle kalenderens fire afsnit er det kontroversielle Thomasevangelium i brug som led i undersøgelsen af, hvem Jesus var og hvordan vi kan forstå ham i vores tid. This week my guest is Paul Bruun [39:50], a legendary figure in fly fishing who has been involved with the fly-fishing world even longer than me. Last night, he received the Izaak Walton Award from the American Museum of Fly fishing for a lifetime of contributions to our sport. Paul is a guide, writer, newspaperman, and he developed the famous South Fork Skiff, which has recently been resurrected and redesigned by the famous Adipose Boatworks Company in Montana. Paul is a wonderful storyteller and he tells us about what it was like to learn fly fishing in South Florida in the 1960s—not an easy task! In the Fly Box this week, we have some great questions and suggestions from listeners, including: I am too slow in striking to small mountain trout. Is there a way I can fix that? A listener alerts us to a water issue on an Oregon tailwater A listener is confused by the differences in pound test and diameter on leader butts and wants to know if there is a rule-of-thumb for the correct leader butt section. Do you think the studs on my wading boots are spooking trout? Do trout in different micro-habitats in the same river choose different insects? How small of a river is too small to use trout spey equipment? And should I use a Scandi or Skagit setup? Is it useful to be able to cast with either your right or left hand? I see larger fish suspended a foot from the surface over deep water. What are they doing there? A listener suggests that a previous question about not being able to hook rising trout during a caddis hatch may have been due to mountain whitefish, which have a much smaller mouth than trout. I am getting lost flies and a pigtail at the end of my leader when using a clinch knot. What should I do? Is there a better knot? What is the best way to store fly rods in their tubes?

We are back today with Dallin Bruun on the podcast for a guided meditation! In this meditation, we are going to try to put our betrayal trauma aside for a moment, and come up for some air of safety and peace. To prepare, Dallin asks us to minimize outside distractions, turn off a light, and sit comfortably. He also gives us two instructions as we follow along: Focus on breathing Relax any potential that we could be doing it wrong Guided meditation (13:00-28:56) He teaches that mindfulness is a way that we can back away from our current situation with a bit of distance. We find that this is giving our identity a break by choosing to focus on something that is inherently safe. It can also help us learn to tolerate the voices in our head. Dallin says that mindfulness did not take away the "mess", but it helped aid in a strong sense of self love and compassion. It is just another tool in our tool-belt!
