fWotD Episode 2846: Benjamin F. McAdoo Welcome to Featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia’s finest articles. The featured article for Tuesday, 18 February 2025 is Benjamin F. McAdoo.Benjamin Franklin McAdoo Jr. (October 29, 1920 – June 18, 1981) was an American architect. McAdoo designed a number of residential, civic, and commercial structures in the Seattle area in a modernist aesthetic influenced by the Northwest Regional style. Born in Pasadena, California, he attended school in Southern California, where he was inspired by the work of Paul R. Williams and began to pursue architectural training. After working as a draftsman for local architectural firms and the Army Corps of Engineers, he pursued his Bachelor of Architecture at the University of Washington in Seattle, graduating in 1946. He became the first licensed African-American architect in the state of Washington, and after a brief period designing remodels and alterations, he began to receive commissions to design private residences.Favorable coverage in The Seattle Times by architecture journalist Margery Phillips boosted his career. A residence designed by McAdoo in Burien was declared the "Home of the Year" by The Seattle Times in association with the American Institute of Architects. After designing a number of low-income houses and apartments throughout the 1950s, including around eighty of his single-family "Houses of Merit", he was hired by the Agency for International Development to design modular houses in Jamaica. He returned to the United States after eighteen months in Jamaica and briefly worked for the Department of State and the General Services Administration in Washington, D. C., where he aided Edward Durell Stone in designing the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. He returned to Seattle in 1964, where he pursued public and civic architectural commissions. In addition to his architectural work, he participated in the NAACP, hosted a weekly radio show on racial issues for several years, and unsuccessfully ran for a seat in the Washington House of Representatives. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:55 UTC on Tuesday, 18 February 2025.For the full current version of the article, see Benjamin F. Sometimes even the best design needs a little help, particularly when Mother Nature is having a bad day. Her earthquakes, for example, do not care whether your building is Modernist.  Her monsoons are not impressed with how famous the architect was, even if he was Paul R. Williams.  One of California's most well-known architects, Williams' buildings get more famous year by year.  There are two in Los Angeles at UCLA that have been recently restored and shored up for such ominous natural events, and joining us is the architect for those University projects, Scott Kelsey of CO Architects.  After that, jazz with musical guest John Armato, the drummer who loves ballads.

The Los Angeles Breakfast Club: ON THE AIR

As we approach the 93rd anniversary of the Los Angeles Breakfast Club, we not only look back at the month that was, but we look back to the club's founding and to the creation of our longtime home, Friendship Auditorium, through historic and moving audio. Much as the Breakfast Club cherishes its traditions, from time to time, things do change. One such change in tradition occurred this past month and we celebrate that change through poignant and delightful clips. Club chaplain Reverend Barbara Adams takes us down the path that leads to our continuing "Adventures in Friendship". Author Marcy Smothers speaks about her new book, Eat Like Walt. A tribute to visionary entertainment pioneer and former Breakfast Clubber, Walt Disney, the book chronicles Walt's rather revolutionary approach to dining at both his theme park and at his studio. Greg Salyer, President of the University of Philosophical Research explains a little bit about the history and mission of this Los Feliz-based university. Heather Goers, Architectural Historian from Historic Resources Group, presents a profile of noted architect Paul R. Williams. Sarah Lann, director of education for the Los Angeles Conservancy, describes the ways the conservancy helps people to fall in love with L.A. The Don Snyder Orchestra plays the jazzy seasonal favorite "When the Saints ". Host Phil Leirness interviews club member Sandy Boucher. Club president Lily Holleman previews March's happenings at the Shrine of Friendship. All that, plus more music, lots of laughs and a few emotional and inspiring surprises. We hope you will enjoy episode 14 so much, you will share it with your friends!
