Darwin, Slavery, and Abolition

Was Darwin’s evolutionary theory inspired by his opposition to slavery? Explore the complex relationship between Darwin’s personal abhorrence of human slavery and his scientific observations of slave-making ants as natural selection in action. While born into a family of abolitionists, Darwin’s evolutionary works notably lack anti-slavery advocacy and even describe slavery in nature as “beneficial.” This examination challenges recent claims about Darwin’s motivations, revealing how his theories were later used to justify racial hierarchies rather than combat them. The author argues that contrary to popular portrayal, Darwin’s “sacred cause” wasn’t abolition—it was challenging the idea of divine creation.

McAdoo Welcome to Featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia’s finest articles. The featured article for Tuesday, 18 February 2025 is Benjamin F. McAdoo.Benjamin Franklin McAdoo Jr. (October 29, 1920 – June 18, 1981) was an American architect. McAdoo designed a number of residential, civic, and commercial structures in the Seattle area in a modernist aesthetic influenced by the Northwest Regional style. Born in Pasadena, California, he attended school in Southern California, where he was inspired by the work of Paul R. Williams and began to pursue architectural training. After working as a draftsman for local architectural firms and the Army Corps of Engineers, he pursued his Bachelor of Architecture at the University of Washington in Seattle, graduating in 1946. He became the first licensed African-American architect in the state of Washington, and after a brief period designing remodels and alterations, he began to receive commissions to design private residences.Favorable coverage in The Seattle Times by architecture journalist Margery Phillips boosted his career. A residence designed by McAdoo in Burien was declared the "Home of the Year" by The Seattle Times in association with the American Institute of Architects. After designing a number of low-income houses and apartments throughout the 1950s, including around eighty of his single-family "Houses of Merit", he was hired by the Agency for International Development to design modular houses in Jamaica. He returned to the United States after eighteen months in Jamaica and briefly worked for the Department of State and the General Services Administration in Washington, D. C., where he aided Edward Durell Stone in designing the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. He returned to Seattle in 1964, where he pursued public and civic architectural commissions. In addition to his architectural work, he participated in the NAACP, hosted a weekly radio show on racial issues for several years, and unsuccessfully ran for a seat in the Washington House of Representatives. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:55 UTC on Tuesday, 18 February 2025.For the full current version of the article, see Benjamin F. You Just Have To Laugh – meets judgement with a favorable eye. Being both thankful and grateful are interchangeable with one another and are simply expressions of appreciation. Thankful is an expression of gratitude. Gratitude is the thought of appreciation. So let's flip that around. Gratitude is an expression of thankfulness. Thankfulness is the thought of appreciation. You humble host, David Naster, breaks this all down and looking at any situation with a favorable eye helps get through any negativity or unpleasantness.

This week's Open Mic guest is Paul Bertels, Principal and Senior Consultant for Farmgate Insights. Much attention is given to the potential demand for billions of bushels of row crops should they be included as acceptable feedstocks for sustainable aviation fuel. Drawing from his long career with the National Corn Growers Association and the ethanol industry, Bertles says the SAF market won't be as easy to develop as the process involves creating molecules of actual jet fuel instead of simply blending the product. Favorable regulations, incentives, subsidies and carbon sequestration will all have to be accomplished in order to open this new opportunity for farmers and the ag industry.

Favorable growing conditions have boosted both planting progress and crop development. As of December 1, 90% of the expected soybean area had been planted. Soybean acres are projected to expand by 2.6%, reaching just over 117 million acres this season. US Soybean and Corn Export Sales DisappointUS soybean and corn export sales were disappointing last week, with soybean sales falling well below expectations at 1.2 million metric tons (43 million bushels), a 49% drop from the previous week and 42% below the 4-week average. China was the largest soybean buyer for the week. Similarly, corn sales were also below expectations, at 946,900 metric tons (37 million bushels), a 45% decline from the previous week and 32% below the 4-week average. Colombia was the largest corn buyer. Wheat sales also lagged, totaling 290,200 metric tons (11 million bushels), 23% lower than the previous week.Canada's Potential Retaliation Against US TariffsCanada is considering export taxes on key commodities, such as uranium, oil, and potash, if President-elect Donald Trump imposes broad tariffs on Canadian imports. Canada is the largest foreign supplier of oil to the US and a key exporter of uranium for US nuclear plants. It also supplies potash, which is crucial for US agriculture. US Agriculture Sector Discusses Policies with Trump's TeamThe US agriculture sector is engaging with Donald Trump's team to address concerns over his proposed policies, particularly around tariffs, trade, and immigration. Some agricultural groups are pushing for the expansion of the H-2A visa program to meet labor needs. There's also a call for China to honor its commitment to purchase $50 billion annually in US agricultural products, as per the Phase One trade agreement. However, concerns remain about Trump's tariffs, with many industry groups fearing negative impacts on trade and the broader economy. Similar to his first trade war, Trump is expected to provide financial aid to farmers to offset potential losses.Summit Carbon Solutions Gets Approval for PipelineSummit Carbon Solutions has received approval from the Minnesota Public Utilities Commission to build 28 miles of carbon capture pipeline running from the North Dakota border to an ethanol plant in Fergus Falls, Minnesota. Construction is set to begin in 2026, pending finalization of right-of-way agreements with landowners along the route. Summit has already received permits in IA and ND and is reapplying in SD after initial rejection.USDA Drought Monitor DataThe latest USDA drought monitor shows that drought conditions remain prevalent across the Corn Belt, with limited precipitation last week. Ohio State landed in what appears to be a very favorable No. 6 spot in the College Football Playoff rankings, which were released Tuesday night. The Buckeyes will likely drop a spot or two in the final rankings, but they appear to be a lock to host a first-round playoff game. Also, is this the weirdest signing day ever? College football managed to shoehorn in a signing day on Dec. 4, which is one of the strangest decisions we can remember. We'll keep saying this until we're blue in the face: the early signing period should be the final week of July, right before training camp begins. The good news is this means the media will get a chance to speak with OSU head coach Ryan Day today. It is the signing day press conference, but of course many questions will be asked about the Buckeyes' offensive and special teams debacle in their loss to Michigan last Saturday. Dave Biddle and Steve Helwagen delve into all of that and more on the Wednesday 5ish.
