In this episode, I explore my involvement in the Paula Gardner settlement, which stemmed from the Washington Department of Corrections' negligent medical treatment. In this episode, I address my indefinite suspension from visitation rights. I was prohibited from visiting my fiancée, Paula Gardner, and was even unable to send her electronic messages. Despite the Washington DOC's assertions that it encourages communication between incarcerated individuals and their loved ones, their measures suggest the contrary. The interaction with loved ones and the external world plays a crucial role in recidivism, rehabilitation, and mental health. There is a pressing need to enhance correctional practices within the penal system. https://youtu.be/VKA56bBlbSo --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/joel-wilborn/support

Here's Episode 81 of Michigan's premier progressive podcast! On this week's episode, Pat talks about "Florida" Mike Rogers' audacity to run for Michigan's open Senate seat this Fall even though he hasn't lived in this state for years (because he wanted to make lobbying cash), and he's registered to vote in both Florida and Michigan! How can a guy, who didn't even know about the abortion rights proposal, which passed in 2022, portray himself as a true Michigander? Pat would like to know. Pat also congratulates friend of the podcast, Democratic State Rep. Betsy Coffia, on her hard work passing a law which allows Michiganders ages 16-to-17-and-a-half years old to pre-register to vote. That law is in effect, and now, those Michiganders can pre-register by going online using a driver's license or state ID, or they can pre-register in-person by visiting their local clerk's office. Again, Democrats work to engage more people to take part in our democracy, and to make voting more accessible.  Then, Pat talks with Bridge Michigan business editor Paula Gardner on how corporate subsidies aren't working as promised here in the state. Ms. Gardner's fantastic investigative work into the state's corporate subsidy programs, and how these programs are leading to low-paying jobs, is a must-read. It's proving what many of us worry about when it comes to these "incentives." They aren't giving us the best results.  In the "Last Call," Pat once again says the Arizona State Supreme Court's decision to rule a near-complete abortion ban law from 1864 as constitutional shows how abortion will remain a top issue in this Fall's election. Many "Very Serious People" in Lansing, and in D.C., keep telling us that abortion is so 2022, but you know better! It's evident that sending incarcerated women there to serve their sentences, especially if they face an elevated risk of serious ailments, is a problematic practice. The recent $9.9 million award to Paula Gardner underscores the need for the Washington Department of Corrections to adopt a more proactive stance in preventing harm to incarcerated individuals. It's time to break the cycle of repeating mistakes that endanger their health and well-being. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/joel-wilborn/support

Paula Gardner joins us to talk about Chaos Theory which is about how every tiny decision alters your course and how you come to realise you have no control over events, good or bad.   In The Show Nicola’s having a quiet week since sister Sarah returned to the UK. Dave’s Dining Club re-opens now that the offseason has returned to Stoupa. Judith’s moved house, said goodbye to everyone in the West Country, and met her new helpful neighbours. She’s broken out the thermals, is contemplating NaNoWriMo and has enjoyed another crystal consultation.   What’s Fuelled Their Fire? Nicola’s ahead of the game when it comes to NaNoWriMo, she’s attended a writing sprint day with her writing club which was at her house so she mainly spent the time zapping (writing-based) tolerations. Sarah left her with the farewell gift of a tidy and clean home which means Nicola has a lovely feeling of being on top of all her chores. Judith enjoyed a timely reminder when spending a most unusual 2.5 hours in the hairdresser this week; she received not one but two SEO-based leads. Step away from the machine more often, Judith!   Focus of the Week Paula Gardner was in PR but her first love was always psychology. Careers advice put her and her parents off allowing her to pursue that but now she’s found a way to combine the two. She talks about Chaos Theory which is about how every tiny decision alters your course and how you come to realise you have no control over events, good or bad. This leads on to a discussion of Happenstance Theory which is about getting over the idea of goals, the more open you are, the more serendipity has room to happen. Connect with Paula via her website Scarlet Thinking or on Facebook.   Words of the Week Nicola chooses Autonomous and Judith picks Budget.   Project Updates Judith is taking a few days off to settle into her new home, and Nicola is experimenting with the podcast’s category by submitting it to Health/Self Help.   Who or What’s Impressed? Nicola is impressed by self-published fantasy writer Peter Flannery who she has interviewed for Write Club’s podcast.
