ONCE UPON A GENE - EPISODE 168 Being Brave, Curious and Motivated to Help Make a Difference with DLG4 Research Mama Payal Patel I met Payal Patel at the 2022 Global Genes Patient Advocacy Summit. She's digging in and getting things done, she really impresses me and you have to meet her. You'll definitely be seeing more of this rare mom. EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS What led up to your attendance at the Global Genes conference last year? My daughter was diagnosed with a rare disease in July 2022. I had just met another mom whose child had a mutation on the same gene and she mentioned the Global Genes conference. I decided to go, but upon arrival, I felt really out of place not knowing anyone there. I didn't know what to do and I wasn't confident in putting myself out there to network. I told my husband that I was going to fly home and he convinced me to stay and see what happened, and I'm glad I stayed. It was a magical three days of networking, learning and meeting mentors. How did you find the courage to go to the Global Genes summit after getting a diagnosis only a couple months earlier? When I got the diagnosis, I wasn't in a good head space, but the idea of doing nothing scared me more than taking the leap of going to the conference. It was a good starting point to go and see what others were doing for their kids and it was the best decision I made. I made so many connections with rare disease advocates that have helped me to get to where I am. How did you teach yourself about DLG4 and determine your next steps? A month after diagnosis, I shared the information within my network on Facebook and asked for help. I asked specifically for scientists, doctors and geneticists to help and so many people stepped up. A friend invited me to visit her in the lab to explain the science around how proteins work. Another friend who is a genetics counselor met with me. I attended the Global Genes summit, but I also kept researching and figuring out what to do next. I read blogs, listen to podcasts, talk to patient advocacy groups, network and ask questions. What are you planning for right now? I feel strongly after talking to doctors and patient advocacy groups, that I want to do a drug repurposing screen for our gene. I'm taking things one step at a time-- the most obvious is a drug repurposing screen that isn't going to cost an amount of money I can't raise and it'll be impactful in the short-term for anyone impacted by DLG4. Looking at the big picture, my confidence takes a hit, so I'm taking things one day at a time, understanding that I can't control the variables of the future. WISH Well Podcast: Women's Integrative Summit on Health & Wellness
I am a Pediatric Integrative Physician, wife and mother to two beautiful boys. In 2009 I graduated from Goryeb Children's Hospital in Morristown, NJ. After working 60 hours a week in Private Practice for 3 years, I gave birth to my precious baby boy. My original plan was to return back to work part-time but everything changed once he was born. I decided to be a stay-at-home mom. During this time I also gave birth to my my second son. Before I knew it, 4 years had gone by in beautiful, chaotic, perfect life. After returning to work I realized I was no longer the same practitioner. My years at home as a mom helped me redefine my practice mindset. What I learned theoretically was not necessarily practical for all families. This real life experience combined with my Pediatric Knowledge led me to pursue a certification in Integrative Medicine at the Andrew Weil Center of Integrative Medicine. With this approach, healing takes into account the whole person, including all aspects of lifestyle. In this one I interview Payal Patel and Cody Plofker of Adapt Performance and Rehab The two have been in business since 2017 and they're already well on the way to creating a $500,000 revenue business as well as stepping out of patient care completely. We talk about the challenges the two faced when they got started, how they picked the wrong type of patient and who they now focus on instead that has let them grow faster and more profitably. We discuss their recent hiring challenges and the importance of getting the right office manager - as early as possible. We take a critical look at the hiring MISTAKE they recently made and ask what they could have done differently to ensure they next one is the right one. You'll here my advice to my “28 year old self” with regards hiring as well as the importance of a CEO “buying back time” in order to grow the business faster than ever would be possible if you're stuck inside the treatment room for 35 hours per week. In honor of World Mental Health Day on October 10th, we sat down with Payal Patel to discuss the stigma, assumptions, and systematic challenges surrounding Mental Health Treatment within the Desi community and American culture at large. Payal is a Licensed Family and Marriage Therapist hailing from New Jersey but now settled in North Carolina to start her own counseling practice, Manu Counseling (@manucounseling). Payal has treated numerous clients affected by traumas such as mental illness, sexual assault, and domestic violence - all of which are also prevalent in the Desi community but more repressed from conversation than they should be. Join the Carolina Desis this week as they speak to Payal about the importance of discarding labels when it comes to Mental Health and Wellness. If you are in the Charlotte area, check out Payal’s counseling practice at http://www.manucounseling.com. Follow @thecarolinadesi on social media to join the conversation.

We had an excellent Q&A last week with Mary Ferreira, Karen Benge, and Payal Patel from the London Business School. The excerpt below provides an insider look at how the adcom readers determine fit, especially when it comes to how applicants relate their career goals in their essays. Linda Abraham: Do you look for students who have a clear idea of where they want to go, both professionally and geographically? Karen Benge: Geographically, not as much. I think what’s most important is that people are really reflective on their career to-date and they think about why they want to do an MBA, why they want to do one now, why they want to come to London for it, why they want to do a London Business School MBA, and how they can see that fitting into the career path that they envision for themselves. Everybody knows you’ll be exposed to a lot of different career paths and different industries and job functions that you might not have even heard of before you joined, so we appreciate that people may change or adapt their plans, but it’s important that we see the applicants have reflected on the things I mentioned about where they want to be with their MBA when they come to apply. As much as anything it’s about making sure that the student is therefore a good fit for the school, given what they want to do, and the school is a good fit for them as well, that the expectations are right, and someone can really achieve what they want to achieve by coming here.
