Episode: 2766 Do Wrist Mounted Pedometers Really Work? Today, an investigation.
The guys return from holiday hiatus to catch up on a loss to Buffalo, clinching a playoff berth after pummeling Jacksonville, discussing ESPN's whitewash of Roethlisberger's "indiscretions", and John Madden's passing.
Between your phone, your watch, your pedometer, your glasses, your shoes, and your headphones, fitness devices are everywhere. In fact, some fitness devices have their own tracking devices in a never-ending loop of tracking your tracking. But here's the question:Do fitness trackers really work?Good morning and welcome to the Ben Garves Podcast - a show at the intersection of health, activism, and technology. I'm your host, Ben Garves. Amazon, Apple, Garmin, Nike, UnderArmour, WHOOP, Fitbit...Peloton…It's 2021 and really, who isn't in the fitness tracker game? They track your steps, your heart rate, your swimming stroke, food intake, running gait, sleep quality, and more. But does that abundance of information have a positive impact on your fitness journey? It's estimated over two and a half billion (with a “b”) adults around the globe are considered overweight or obese, and therefor at risk of a whole slew of chronic diseases from cardiopulmonary issues (those are of the lungs and blood), to the pancreas, in the form of Type II diabetes. The problem isn't just personal for those who struggle with obesity - it's estimated 85% of healthcare costs in the United States and 70% of deaths are related to diseases caused or exacerbated by obesity. Many fitness trackers hone in on a magical number: 150 minutes of moderate physical activity, recommended by a number of researchers, as the minimum amount of activity someone needs to achieve every week in order to maintain a basic level of health. If you don't know how many minutes of activity you hit last week, that's the value of these tools. Whether they're tracking steps or time spent exerting yourself, they all circle back to the simple idea of getting physically active.A recent analysis published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine combined data from 31 clinical trials, adding up to 2,268 participants, and found a modest reduction of body weight was able to fight off five to ten percent of adverse health effects related to various obesity-adjacent cancers, heart diseases, metabolic syndromes, sleep apnea, and cholesterol issues. The study also found weight loss from someone who spent at least twelve weeks focusing on the feedback from their fitness trackers averaged over nine pounds. Most importantly, these things are so accessible! A basic Fitbit can run less than a hundred dollars, free apps like Apple's Health app being available on your phone, and really great proactive suggestions coming from Garmin's inked watches and app (my personal favorite). Don't forget if you're shopping for a device that it can be as simple as taking a long walk every night after work, and that buying a device doesn't solve the problem: doing the work does. But the studies do prove that having a device as a companion does help you along your journey. That wraps it up for today. Thanks for listening to the Ben Garves Podcast, at the intersection of health, activism, and technology. Don't forget, Fitness is for Everyone™.

Hey, Counties! How's that isolation going? We hope you're healthy and safe. Reach out and tell us what's up!As always, each episode of Counter Programming will focus on a "counter" of some sort. Today, we learn about step counters, also known as pedometers.Thank you to Jerome Silberman (David) for lending your voice for the intro section of the episode! You can do the same. Record a voice note saying, "Hi, i'm (your name), and you're listening to Counter Programming with Shira & Arielle." Then send it to us!You can reach us by email to tell us how YOU feel about granite - counterprogrammingshiraarielle@gmail.com. You can also reach us on Instagram @counterprogrammingpod.In this episode, we share what we're up to during isolation. Arielle started listening to the Harry Potter series via Audible and is confused by the line between the Muggle and the Wizarding world. Yes, she's 20 years late. Shira got an air fryer for her birthday and has been experimenting with frying all sorts of things, including bagels!Last week, Shira and Arielle decided they'd compete: who could get more steps via their step counters in one week. The results: Shira - 56,626 steps and Arielle - 97,431. And we had a Countie submit her steps: Zari - 96,723. WOW. Close game! There's some debate over who created the first pedometer:First, Leonardo da Vinci, who envisioned a mechanical pedometer as a device with military applications.Jean Fernel, a French craftsman, may have invented the first pedometer in 1525. His invention was in the shape of a watch and had 4 dials. A mechanical pedometer obtained from France was introduced in the US by Thomas Jefferson.Robert Hooke, an English scientist, is also given credit for inventing the pedometer in 1674. His was used by map makers. In 1777 Abraham-Louis Perrelet of Switzerland created the first pedometer/wind-watch, measuring the steps and distance while walking; it was based on a 1770 mechanism of his to power a self-winding watch. However, the first person to officially receive a patent was English watchman, John Harwood, in 1924 by the Swiss and he exhibited the world's first self-winding watch at the 1926 Basle Trade Fair. Our history with pedometers: - Arielle got one at a bar mitzvah in 2002. Loved. - Shira's summer camp (2013) gave out pedometers inspired by Michelle Obama. - We became obsessed with Fitbits/Jawbones when we moved to Jackson because we felt lazy being stuck inside all day.SourceCome back next week as we explore another "counter"-related entity. Thanks for tuning in! Leave us a review on Apple or a comment on Castbox.Tweet at us. Here's Shira. Here's Arielle.Buzzsprout, y'all, the best podcast host in the game. Thank you to Daniel Tureck, our engineer.Thank you to Caio Slikta, our logo designer. Our music is called Tennessee Hayride and it's by Jason Shaw.
A pedometer is a device, usually portable and electronic or electromechanical, that counts each step a person takes by detecting the motion of the person's hands or hips. How is it used today and what does it's future look like? --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/daniel-andersson9/message

Wearable Technology and Fitness Wearable technology has been around for quite a while, but the accuracy of it has been questionable. Pedometers, heart rate monitors, etc. are not new, but the new advances in them and other wearables are astounding. If you own an Apple watch, a Fitbit, or any other piece you have a powerful tool to help you up your health and fitness game. However, there are other technologies coming out that may be even more useful! What things are on the horizon? A sports bra, t-shirt, headband that cant track your activity? Which ones are the best, most accurate and what other ways are these tools useful in keeping me healthy? Find out! Pedometers are no longer needed, even if Evan thinks they are. Hans finished up Michelle Obama's new memoir, and Evan is excited about the new Picard show.
These days, we have all sorts of learning at our fingertips, including through podcasts! I’ve learned so much from listening to other educators sharing their ideas, tips, and lessons in podcasts, and I bet you have too. The wide variety of podcasts out there lets you choose exactly what subjects interest you. Teachers should get professional learning credit where credit is due, so let’s dig into some ways that you may be able to get credit for listening to podcasts. It isn’t necessarily easy to determine how much credit a teacher should get. Episodes aren’t always an hour long. Even if they are, there probably isn’t an hour of learning content, because there are other things in there too. One of my solutions to this is to include my question of the week in each podcast episode. This is one way of providing evidence of learning, and potentially getting credit for it. Today, I’ll share recordings from several teachers who explain what they’re doing in this regard. Carlos Garza has made a tracker to record your professional learning. Next, Laura Cahill shares her strategy for making online learning more accessible to teachers. After that, I’ll share some resources from Meredith Akers, who provided her EDU Podcast Tasting 2.0 and EDU Podcast Tasting and Podcasts and Pedometers. You’ll also hear how Jennifer Bell applies Meredith’s ideas. I hope this lesson inspires you and helps show you how to get credit for listening to podcasts! It may take some effort and time, but I truly believe this is a valuable cause that will benefit teachers. In This Episode: [00:28] - Kasey welcomes listeners to the show, and explains that today’s topic is how to get credit for listening to podcasts (like this one!). [01:17] - This week’s shoutout goes to Stephanie Ross Evans, Diane Royer, and Vicki Heupel, who all recently became Google Certified Educators! Stay tuned to learn more about Kasey’s courses. [02:26] - Kasey shares the purpose of this episode, and explains what podcast PD is. [06:21] - You can check out Kasey’s recommended podcasts for teachers at this link. Kasey briefly covers what each of these podcasts is about. [13:33] - This list is just scratching the surface, Kasey explains. Podcasting has never been hotter than it is now! [14:28] - Kasey points out that there are many ways that teachers are getting credit for listening to podcasts, and explains some of the complications. [16:27] - We hear about one of the ways that Kasey designed into each episode to help give evidence of teachers’ learning. [18:52] - Kasey shares some ways that some schools are giving credit for podcasts. She then shares Carlos Garza’s insight into tracking online learning. [22:08] - The next tip comes from Laura Cahill, who has a creative strategy for encouraging her community to listen to podcasts. [25:00] - Kasey shares some resources from Meredith Akers: EDU Podcast Tasting 2.0 and EDU Podcast Tasting and Podcasts and Pedometers. [29:51] - We hear about the Podcasts and Pedometers concept in more depth. [31:45] - Kasey invites teachers to think about whether there’s someone they can talk to about the idea of credit for podcasts. [33:00] - Attention, administrators! This section, the podcast question of the week, is for you. Ready? Name three ways that podcasts have helped improve your teaching and impacted your students. Post your answers in the Shake Up Learning Community on Facebook, or on your favorite social media platform using the #ShakeUpLearning hashtag. [34:00] - You can find all of the podcast questions of the week at this link. [34:51] - Have you thought about getting Google Certified? Kasey can help! She helps educators get certified through her three online courses: The Google Certified Educator Level 1 Academy The Google Certified Educator Level 2 Academy Become a Google Certified Trainer Online Course If you’re interested in taking more than one of these courses, get a bundle to save big! Enrollment only opens twice a year, so sign up when it opens on May 21st or you’ll need to wait until November. If you’re ready to learn more, head to this link! [37:14] - Thank you for tuning in! When is the best time to clamp a baby's umbilical cord? It is a controversial question that has perplexed maternity units for years but new evidence from Nottingham has changed practice at the hospital's busy labour ward. Mark Porter pays them a visit. Natural Cycles is a much promoted contraception app advertised as an alternative to more conventional methods. But the Advertising Standards Authority has ruled that claims of it being 'highly accurate' were misleading so Margaret McCartney expresses her concerns that the app doesn't live up to the hype. And once the initial enthusiasm of having a pedometer wears off do they keep people walking in the long term?
Act 1: Podcast Deep Dive We highlight other podcasts: Christina explains why WTF, Pop Culture Happy Hour, Still Processing, You Must Remember This, The Next Picture Show, and We Hate Movies are worth a listen. "The funniest weight loss and fitness radio show on the internet." Please click on the POD button to listen to the latest Dr. Fitness and the Fat Guy show. On tonight's show, Doctor Fitness and the Fat Guy get the skinny about two of the hottest gifts for the fitness lover or the weight loss wannabe in your family. First we had on Patrick Cioffi, Jr from Bio Trainer. Bio Trainer is the new device by Premier Products that will make pedometers obsolete. You see Bio Trainer tracks all your physical activities and then calculates how many calories you burned. Each day you can use their online service and actually know if you gained or lost weight that day. Pretty amazing stuff. Denise Austin has signed on as their official spokesperson so you know it's good. Forget joining a gym this January, buy this product instead and save yourself a fortune. Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy listeners save even more. Just type in the promo code Dr Fitness on the order form and you save big bucks. Bio Trainer is having a special this Holiday season - if you sign up for a year of the online service for $100 they will throw in a free BioTrainer. That saves you about 50 bucks, right there. Check them out at www.biotrainerusa.com We also had on Bob Fox the president of Speed Stacks. Speed Stacks is the must have gift for your kid this holiday season. Forget about Playstation 3 or Nintendo Wii, get your kid a set of Speed Stacks and they will love it. The Fat Guys kid has stopped playing with his video game and plays with his Speed Stacks almost everyday. This is a sport that the whole family can play together. It's easy to learn and very addicting. The object is to take the Speed Stack cups and stack 3 pyramids with them then immediately unstack them. You have to do this as fast as you can without knocking them over. Sounds easy but when you have the pressure of the ticking clock things get interesting. Go to www.Youtube.com and search for "sport stacking" or "speed stacks" and you will be blown away at how fast these kids can do this. The sport is called Sport Stacking, it is catching on all over the world, it is even in PE classes around the country and the World Championships have been broadcasted on ESPN. Go to Bob's website www.SpeedStacks.com and check them out. Dr. Fitness had some really good tips about how to Stick to your New Year's Resolution this January. We didn't get to all of them, but here a few of Dr. Fitness' tips...Number 1, make your goal a top 3 non-negotiable goal. Number 2, make it fun, and tell lots of people about your goal. And Number 3, get a partner to watch your back. They will be there to get you back on your program when you get frustrated or lose interest. There were a lot more detail from Dr. Fitness, so you will have to listen to the show to find out all the rest of these great tips. And I'm sure he'll post all the tips on his blog, even the ones we didn't get to tonight. Another highlight of this show was Fat Guy talking about his new website www.GymsAreARipOff.com the Fat Guy thinks that gyms prey upon sedentary people and basically take their money knowing full well that they will stop going to the gym in a matter of weeks. So check out the Fat Guys "Gyms Are A Rip Off" blog and submit your gym horror story. It seems that people are frustrated by the broken promises their gym gave them when they joined and also they are usually disappointed when their hometown gym gets bought out by a large national corporate chain. Service usually goes downhill fast. Also don't forget to check out Dr. Fitness on Huntsville, AL TV. He has a segment every Tuesday on the ABC affiliate there WAAY where he answers viewers weight loss questions. Their website is www.waaytv.com As always, more laughs, more info and more fun than any other health, fitness, weight loss podcast out there.
