Deleting data and research is book burning. No need to read 1984, we're living through it. Data is a representation of reality. By controlling data, one can control our understanding of reality, and in the hands of an autocratic regime erasing data is a highly effective tool for erasing dissent. After all, no one can claim the regime is causing problems if no evidence of said problems exists. We are witnessing the full scale dismantling of our science and institutions. -o-Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/everythingispublichealth Bluesky Social: @everythingisPHMastodon: @everythingispublichealth Email: EverythingIsPublicHealth@gmail.com Photo Credit: Photo by Enayet Raheem on Unsplash https://unsplash.com/photos/white-printer-paper-with-black-text-0UxQZNoLnlk?utm_content=creditShareLink&utm_medium=referral&utm_source=unsplashSupport the show

The Army is actively seeking innovative programs and ideas to address the recruitment and retention challenges it faces. One such idea is the newly designed Blended Education Program (BEP) at the U.S. Army War College. The BEP is a hybrid program that combines the best aspects of the residential program, including staff rides to Gettysburg, Washington D.C., and New York City, with the remote flexibility of the distance education program, all within a 10-month academic year. It aims to help retain talented senior officers who wish to remain at their current duty stations while furthering their professional military education. Carl Benander, an AY24 BEP graduate, and Dr. Mark Duckenfield, the director of the program, joined podcast editor Ron Granieri to discuss the program's early successes and lessons learned. The BEP offers a mix of synchronous and asynchronous learning, allowing students to interact with each other and their instructors in real time. Although still in its early stages, the BEP has been a success so far and is expected to continue and grow in the future. For more information about the Blended Education Program at the U.S. Army War College contact the director of the program, Dr. Mark Duckenfield mark.duckenfield@armywarcollege.edu I was not interested in three moves in a one- to two-year span. And so I was looking for any opportunity to to have some stability for the family. So that was really the appeal. Carl Benander is a Special Forces officer and a colonel in the U.S. Army. He is the commander of the 3rd Special Forces Group (Airborne) at Fort Liberty, NC. He is a 2024 graduate of the Blended Education Program (BEP) at the U.S. Army War College. Mark Duckenfield is Professor of International Economics in the Department of National Security and Strategy (DNSS) and at the Strategic Studies Institute and the Director of the Blended Education Program (BEP). He is the former Chair of DNSS at the U.S. Army War College. Mark holds an MA and a PhD in Political Science from Harvard University where he specialized in European political economy. He has written numerous academic articles on gold, financial crises and international political economy and is the author of the book Business and the Euro. Stop trying to dismantle our public goods! NOAA, or the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, is one of those monolith of a government organization that is silently a part of our lives but we never notice. Everything that is even slightly related to weather or climate is probably related to NOAA. As we break all the heat records and witness climate catastrophes, remember we need to both change our own action AND work to hold those big corporations responsible. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Upcycle, reject consumerism, and remember that as long as everyone try their best, we are making a difference. In episode 3, we speak with Lisa Berglund, Professor of Urban Planning at Dalhousie University to continue our exploration of community benefit agreements. This time, we take a closer look at CBAs in a specific context - Detroit. Detroit was the first U.S. city to have a CBA ordinance requiring CBAs for all development over a certain size. We learn how Detroit utilizes community benefit agreements along with other policies to support accountable economic growth and development. Professor Berglund shares insight from her close study of the case of Detroit and the urban governance design and processes undergirding this inaugural effort to mandate CBAs. ***Winterpause Special!***In unserer kleinen Pause haben wir wieder eine tolle Folge aus unserem Archiv. Staunt selbst, was Josephine Baker so alles gemacht hat! Josephine Baker (gebürtig Freda Josephine McDonald) wurde am 03. Juni 1906 in Missouri, USA geboren und verstarb am 12. April 1975 in Paris, Frankreich. Financial infidelity is more common than you think. Learn red flags to look out for as well as how to become more proactive with your finances! Why You Need to Talk About Money Openly Marriage and money aren't typically something that people love talking about, but if you want to have a strong relationship you have to find to communicate with each other that's transparent, productive, and respectful. I was looking at a survey, and one had recorded 39% of adults just avoid even talking about the numbers. Think about it for a moment. We're not even talking about hiding anything. We may think we're avoiding a fight by brushing off or keeping chats about money superficial, but that's not usually how it works. Finances, money, budgets – they're necessary topics, and the more comfortable we get about it, I think that actually leads to a better relationship, a better marriage. That's Tracy Coenen who you also heard at the top of the episode. She's on the show today because she's quite familiar with how things can unravel those financial issues can snowball into something much bigger. Tracy has seen that happen in her work. She's a forensic accountant and fraud investigator with Sequence Inc where she investigates embezzlement, securities fraud, divorce, white collar criminal defense, insurance fraud, and civil litigation matters. But let's look at that side- financial infidelity. How would you define it? “Financial infidelity is hiding financial information, financial transactions, from your partner in a situation where you have a reasonable grasp of knowing what they want to know,” said University of Minnesota law professor Jill Hasday. “And, keeping the information is harming them.” A study from the Journal of Financial Therapy, found 76% of married couples involved in financial infidelity say the experience negatively impacted their relationship, and 10% got divorced over it. One reason why it can cause such damage to your marriage is that it breaks trust, which is such a critical piece in your relationship. It's hard to rebuild that trust. It takes time. I hope you never have to deal with financial infidelity, but if it happens, how would you know? In this episode, we'll discuss: Causes or underlying issues behind financial infidelity and red flags to look out for Ways to start working as a team to either prevent or repair the damage How to financially protect yourself We have a lot to cover, so let's get started! Katie Lamb is a 24-year-old boulderer out of the Bay area who has proven her abilities over and over with consistent sends of V14 boulders. Included in her resumé are The Swarm (V13/14) in Bishop, New Base Line (V14) in Magic Wood in Switzerland, Jade (V14) in Rocky Mountain National Park, Direct North (V14) in Bishop, and so many more. She's a Stanford graduate and works half time as a data scientist focused on clean energy, but her main priority is climbing. She's surprisingly not sponsored, and I asked her why that is and if she would be a full-time climber instead of working as a data scientist. I also asked Katie about what sets her apart from other climbers–what makes her sooo good at bouldering. She started climbing at a really young age just outside of Boston on a youth team that emphasized the importance of outdoor climbing. She's taken those values to heart and hasn't competed indoors for a long time, preferring to spend all of her time outside on hard projects. One of the reasons I asked Katie to be on the show is that I heard about her willingness to rest a lot when she's projecting. I really appreciated that coming from such a strong climber, as most super strong climbers I know do not rest more than 1 or 2 days at a time, ever. Katie tells us all about her mindset in climbing, her training program she just started (and whether it's helping her), and how she's prepping for her summer Rocklands trip. I really enjoyed talking with Katie, and I found myself mulling over some things she'd said for weeks after we talked. She's wise beyond her years and takes this sport very seriously – I hope you enjoy! Katie Lamb Interview Details How she developed as a climber Why she goes after aesthetic, historic lines Why she's not just a sponsored climber Why THINKING about climbing a lot helps her send Why she only climbed every 5 days while trying The Swarm Whether or not she'd be happy just climbing and not working How many is too many tries on a boulder – when she gives up What sets her apart from other climbers Her new strength program from Natasha Barnes Why she regressed on her project recently Show Links Instagram @ktlambies Climbing Magazine article about Katie Work on your nutrition with me Photo Credit Photo of Katie on The Penrose Step (V14) in Leavenworth, Washington by @keenantakahashi Please Review The Podcast on iTunes Please give the podcast an honest review on iTunes here to help the show reach more curious climbers around the world.

LEARN MORE ABOUT THE SKILLS & DRILLS WORKSHOP Coach Alex Stiger's Training Plan to Climb Her First 5.14a In this episode, I talk with Coach Alex Stiger about how she's training to prepare to send her first 5.14a this summer/fall. This is a rare exploration of an experienced coach/climber's process around building their own training program. Alex has asked for the help of a couple trainers, a PT, and she's doing work on her mental game as well in order to achieve this big goal. She's taken everything she knows about training to build out an objective plan for herself for 8 weeks before she begins going to her project. We talk about how she assessed her strengths and weaknesses in order to prioritize what she's doing to train. We talk about how she's cultivating a beginner's mindset, why she incorporated running into her program, and how she uses journaling and video of herself climbing to take a more objective view of things. She also shares her schedule from Monday to Sunday every day so you can see exactly what she's doing. This program is specifically built for Alex, and you should not copy it. But we go through how she KNEW what was appropriate for her, and you can take that knowledge to help build your own program. Episode Details Why this climb is so important for her, and why she's ok with walking away empty-handed Why chilling and doing what she wants has been an important part of this training How she uses journaling, tracking, and vieo analysis How she assessed her strengths and weaknesses to build her program Importance of guidance on training, even for a coach Why she used to hate assessments and why she loves them now Her Monday through Sunday training schedule for 8 weeks before the season How/if she'll train while she's trying to send How to use video analysis in your own training Show Links Join Alex's 6-Week Team Training Program Work with Alex as your coach Work on your nutrition with Neely Have questions? The point of this series is to learn from my previous success, and also failures. But I said in episode 65 that it isn't about knowledge, it's about just doing it, and it's not easy. That thing about how overcoming an obstacle makes it easier to overcome the next one, so one success is a lot bigger than it may look at first. If I can get through a week without overeating, if I can get through a week counting all the calories from every meal, those things are huge, and the next week it's that much easier, and because of that, I can go further, until eventually, I feel as I did in episode 65, that I can do just about anything. You don't get there overnight and you don't get there easily. It's hard work one day at a time, and one success at a time we finally do get there, and hopefully, stay there. The trauma remains long after the bullets are removed. When we think of gun violence in America, we either think of mass shootings or gangs and drugs. There is a strong connection between educational attainment and health outcomes. Although our education system has faults and flaws, public school is nonetheless an earnest effort to provide everyone with education and future opportunities. In addition, public school is not just a school, but often times a resource for the students, the family, and the community surrounding it. I throw inflammatory questions and opinions about teenagers at Washington State University sociology professor Monica Kirkpatrick Johnson, and she handles them with aplomb. Teenagers have a rough time, and different teenagers have different rough times depending on who they are, where they live, what their parents are like, and how much money they've got. Most interesting, and sounding right, Monica discusses the "package" we're born with: Our rough or easy teenage transition as a life stage usually has to do with more than one factor ... here and abroad. Let's talk adolescents ... Want to read more? Monica recommends two "easily accessible" books (not overly mathematical) and one a little denser: Not Quite Adults: Why 20-somethings Are Choosing a Slower Path to Adulthood, and Why It's Good for Everyone by Richard Settersten and Barbara E. Ray The Accordion Family: Boomerang Kids, Anxious Parents, and the Private Toll of Global Competition by Katherine S. Newman, with a less U.S.-centric take Not Under My Roof: Parents, Teens, and the Culture of Sex by Amy T. Schalet, which compares U.S. views on adolescent sexuality to Dutch teens and parents. Sneak peek? She's also working with another academic on learning how people are reacting to each other, masked or unmasked, in this pandemic. Got to have her back to talk about THAT! My own sneak peek? Monica's great interview is the first in a three-part series about childhood, adolescence, and old age. More to come there! PHOTO CREDIT: Photo by Ivan Samkov from Pexels

Born in 1918, Jones began performing by the time he was 13, and he continued performing and recording until his death in 2010. His career contains much of jazz history—with 60 solo albums and literally thousands on which he was a sideman. And his family history is entwined with jazz as well: two of his brothers--trumpeter Thad and drummer Elvin-- were great and well-known jazz musicians. Always in demand for record dates and tours, Hank Jones played and recorded with a who's who in the jazz world, including bandleaders like Coleman Hawkins, Billy Eckstine, Howard McGhee, Artie Shaw and Benny Goodman and with artists such as Charlie Parker Lester Young, Cannonball Adderley, and Wes Montgomery. He was Ella Fitzgerald's accompanist for almost five years and served as the original pianist of the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra. He was an eloquent and lyrical pianist with an unmistakable style. Poverty is something that underpins so many other social and public health issues. But what exactly is it? How does it affect people's decision making? TBP 189 :: Lucie Hanes- Running and Climbing and Eating Disorder Recovery Lucie Hanes is a 27-year-old climbing coach out of Eagle, Colorado, who is pursuing her Master's of Science in Applied Sports Psychology. I met Lucie in the Wicked Cave in Rifle last summer, and the next time I heard from her was when she reached out via email in response to the episode I did with Matt Pincus about running and climbing. In that episode, Matt and I basically conclude that running isn't going to help your climbing, and that it may in fact hinder it. And that there are other more effective ways to train endurance for climbing. Lucie emailed me to say that she was not only a high performing climber (having sent numerous 5.13's), but also a high performing ultra runner. She wanted to tell the story of how it's possible to do both sports well as a counter to my episode with Matt. Lucie is incredibly passionate about both of her sports, and my conversation with her ended up being even more enlightening than I thought it would be because it turns out she's also in recovery from an eating disorder. And she's very open about it, so a lot of our conversation ended up being about body image, disordered eating behaviors, her health consequences of underfueling, and how she's recovering from all of it. While she does provide details about her training for both running and climbing – and how she does both at the same time – I want to stress that this is not necessarily something that all humans can imitate without negative consequences. Lucie will admit herself that she may be an outlier, and she also concludes at the end of our talk that running may be inhibiting her climbing abilities and vice versa. So this is NOT an episode wherein we are wholeheartedly advocating for people to train for running and climbing at the same time, and do it with the gusto that Lucie has. I honestly considered not publishing this episode because I knew it would be triggering for some people. But after a lot of thought, I decided that this episode could be very helpful for people who struggle with disordered eating and over-exercising behaviors. Lucie is finding that she is healthier and happier now that she's eating properly to fuel all of the exercise she does, and that is the lesson I want everyone to hear. I want to thank Lucie for her willingness to talk about difficult things; Her vulnerability is invaluable to us all. I very much enjoyed this talk with her, and I felt super connected to her during it. I wish she lived closer to me so we could hang out, honestly. If you'd like to work with Lucie, you can find her at www.insideoutathlete.com, where she consults with athletes on mental strength coaching in sport & performance. Lucie Hanes Interview Details Why running is her form of moving meditation Her running and climbing achievements Her studies and aspirations as a sport psychologist Why she feels the need to be doing something physical all the time How the low points of her eating disorder and RED-S felt Tools she uses to deal with body image as her body changes How she trained for both sports during her eating disorder vs how she trains for them now What she thinks about running for climbers in general and how she thinks it affects her own climbing Show Links Instagram @luciehanes Lucie's coaching website: InsideOutAthlete.com Train with Coach Alex Stiger in her Team Program starting next Tuesday, January 18th Photo Credit Photo of Lucie climbing by Charlie Postlewaite Please Review The Podcast on iTunes Please give the podcast an honest review on iTunes here to help the show reach more curious climbers around the world.

We've been getting a lot of questions from our clients who are scared to take off any time from climbing over the holidays for fear that they'll lose all of the gains they've worked so hard for. Matt describes 3 client scenarios with different circumstances and the guidance he gave about rest: A person who just came off a performance cycle and is a little tweaky and is going home to visit family for a week. A person who has a climbing trip coming up 2 weeks after a trip home to visit family for a week. A person who doesn't have a climbing trip coming up and is going home to visit family for 10 days. We give our own anecdotal stories about whether or not resting has hurt or helped us in the past, and we talk about professional climbers' use of long and short rest periods. We also discuss what the research says about how long it takes to actually lose strength and endurance during taper and off-season periods in other sports. Enjoy! Matt Samet is the editor of Climbing Magazine, the author of several books, a prolific route developer, and a very strong and dedicated climber. He's also a friend of mine and someone I respect a lot, so I've been wanting to interview him for a while. He's a father of 3, works full-time, and just sent a 5.14 project a couple days before his 50th birthday, which is the same max grade he was sending 20 years ago. It's always inspiring to me to see people just make it work in climbing, even if they have a million things going on in their lives and are at an age many climbers believe to be limiting. Another notable thing about Samet is that he battled an addiction to benzodiazapenes and other psychiatric drugs for over a decade, and he still deals with neurological consequences of that. He's had to alter the way he trains and his expectations of himself, and yet he still gets out climbing and trains more often than most of us ever will. In this interview we talk about his dedication to route development, how his training has changed over the years, his stint with anorexia and how he's overcome it, among many other things. I hope you enjoy this interview as much as I did. Matt Samet Interview Details Why he loves route development so much How route development can be a thankless job (and why he doesn't care) Gender bias in route development How he's doing now since being off all drugs since 2006 Long-term nervous system effects from psychiatric drugs How he makes time for climbing while being a dad and working full-time How his wife deals with him wanting to climb all the time How having kids changes your relationship How age plays a role in his climbing at 50 His decades-long bout with anorexia How he's changed his eating and how that affected his climbing What he hopes to achieve going forward (he's not slowing down) Show Links Instagram @phorrizzler6514 His book about Benzos: Death Grip: A Climber's Escape from Benzo Madness The Crag Survival Handbook: The Unspoken Rules of Climbing The Climbing Dictionary: Mountaineering Slang, Terms, Neologisms & Lingo: An Illustrated Reference His article in Outside Magazine about benzo addiction: “Beauty in the Breakdown” Photo Credit Photo of Matt on Nephson (5.13+) at Hillbilly Rock in the Flatirons by Ryan Pecknold Please Review The Podcast on iTunes Please give the podcast an honest review on iTunes here to help the show reach more curious climbers around the world.

Learn More about the Bouldering Program Here Grades – How to Keep Your Ego in Check and Use Them to Your Advantage In the episode, Coach Matt Pincus and I wax philosophical about climbing grades. This is a ubiquitous topic that all climbers discuss, and a topic that can derail a climbing day or motivate the heck out of a climber. We go over why there is so much discrepancy in grades between different crags and bouldering areas around the world, as well as within climbing gyms. And we talk about why ultimately it doesn't matter what something is graded – it's about what a climb can teach you. But there are some grievances aired and some pleas for certain behaviors to change when it comes to discussions of grades. This conversation definitely included some coaching tidbits from Matt on how to approach grades, but we also just kind of… talked. I hope this helps you get your thoughts on grades more crystal clear so you can more easily move through any discomfort about grades (“This climb is WAY harder than what the grade says!” or “Why can't I do this – this grade is usually easy for me?” or “That can't possibly be that hard of a grade – I did it so easily…”). Enjoy! Episode Details The subjective nature of grades around the world Importance of taking grades with a grain of salt Why things are graded the way they are, and why some areas are stouter than others Particularly why Rifle has an abundance of hard 13d's How to think of a route that's hard for the grade as a personal challenge rather than a punch to the gut How I deal with the “unfairness” of being short The importance of climbing style and perception of difficulty Remembering that it really just doesn't matter Show Links Bouldering Program (Levels 1-3) to help you work your way up the grades Work with Matt as your coach Work with Neely as your nutritionist Have topics you want us to cover? About Lor Sabourin In the episode, I talk with Lor Sabourin, who is a successful climber and a mental training coach for The Warrior's Way, where they travel to teach clinics and work one-to-one with climbers of all levels. Lor is also a graduate student on their way to becoming a counselor. I met Lor a long time ago at the base of Dinosaur Rock in the Flatirons, where I was struck by their calm demeanor and friendly smile. I've followed Lor on Instagram since then and have been continually impressed by their ability to talk about difficult subjects with eloquence and humility. Lor recently became the first non-binary climber to climb a 5.14 route on traditional gear when they clipped the chains of Sedona's East Coast Fist Bump (5.14a). I wanted to talk to them about what that projecting process was like, how they improved their climbing so quickly, and what kind of response they've gotten from the climbing community about it. We also talked about some mental aspects of climbing, which is what they work on with people every day, and Lor's insights did not disappoint. They also shared about their experience of coming out as non-binary, and how that affected their relationships with friends and how it affected their climbing. For some reason I feel a kinship with Lor, and I always like talking to them. In this interview we navigated difficult topics, sometimes with less panache than I would've liked (on my part), but these are the conversations that need to happen at the moment, even if they're not easy. I VERY much appreciated Lor's willingness to be open and vulnerable in talking about personal things. It's an election year, and leaving all politics aside, the use of opinion polls is already in full swing by all parties involved. Polling performance in recent years has called the accuracy of polls into question. Was the sample size big enough? Did the questions lead to predictable answers? Who is actually willing to answer the polls, and how many are truthful? A BETTER PEACE welcomes Amanda Cronkhite to the studio to discuss the art and science of opinion polling. She joins podcast editor Ron Granieri to examine what polls can really tell us if done correctly. The most famous man on the street poll that failed, probably, being that Dewey Beats Truman, which made of course into one of the most famous photos in American presidential history. Amanda Cronkhite has been a post-doctoral fellow in the Department of National Security and Strategy at the U.S. Army War College. She just accepted a position at the School of Advanced Military Studies (SAMS), Leavenworth, KS. Not to be confused with delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the other compound that produces the “high” sought with marijuana use, CBD is either the 21st century equivalent of snake oil or an actual wonder cure that can be found in nature. Advocates of CBD claim it treats anything from inflammation to anxiety to epilepsy. Critics point out that the majority of the "data" is anecdotal at best and more study is definitely required. The facts are that it's unregulated and untested by the FDA, and there are no guarantees when you buy a product containing CBD. And its use or even investing in CBD ventures is illegal for military members and federal employees. It can cost you your career, your clearance and possibly even lead to criminal charges. So Tina and Ron ask the question; should it be approved for use treating the ailments of military members and veterans? Tina Cancel is a U.S. Navy Civilian and the Lead Financial Management Analyst for the Navy Working Capital Management Fund Portfolio. She is a member of the AY20 Resident Class at the U.S. Army War College. Ron Granieri is an Associate Professor of History at the U.S. Army War College and the Editor of A BETTER PEACE. Author of Raise Your Inner Game, co-author of QBQ the question behind the question, founder of Raise Your Inner Game Academy. Have you ever had a time when you looked ahead at the next week or so, thought you had a good plan for taking care of yourself, and getting things done, but then it all just falls apart? That's what the last few days have been like for me. We're on a family road trip this week and the first few days have been pretty rough. I thought I had a good plan, and I was looking forward to it. But just enough things were different from what I expected that it just threw everything out of whack. So here's the story. A couple weeks ago we came to Chicago for a short vacation. Just a few days. I was in the middle of a 30-day challenge during that trip, trying to stay perfectly focused with all the things on my Inner Game Tracker, a morning routine with sitting, and exercise, and journaling, and not drinking coke zero, and everything just worked out great. I got up at 6 in the dark hotel room, had my morning sit, slipped out to fitness center for walk/run on the treadmill and my pull-ups pushups and sit ups, then went to business center, did my morning journal and a journal recording for the podcast. Slipped back in to the room around 7:30 or 8. They were still getting up. It was perfect. And I really loved it. Great start to the day. Just felt good all day because of it. So I was looking forward to doing that again on this trip. But there is just enough different about the situation this time that it just doesn't work. First, the rest of the family can't sleep in. The kids have to get up at 6:30 to be ready for their classes. So I can get up and sit, but that's about it. No time for any of the other stuff until after they've gone at 8:15. It's sort of like a typical school year model or rhythm. But at that point, I want to get to work. The day is already under way. There's a lot of pressure to not do the rest of it. It really works great when it's all part of the same morning routine. Also, the first couple of days anyway, the breakfast available was terrible. Just pure cheap carbs. Fruit Loops. Bagels. I had waffles and orange juice yesterday. And a huge crash a couple hours later, as you'd expect. The kind of crash, by the way, that makes a Coke Zero irresistible. You know where that's going. Also, the fitness center has no way to do pull ups. I can still do the other stuff, but for some reason, not being able to do pull ups just really bums me out. I don't want to go a whole week without those. So like I said there are just a lot of things that are throwing me off track these last couple days and I'm feeling a bit off center. When I lay down last night, and when I went to write in my journal this morning, I really felt like it's been a terrible day. I was really bummed out. But on paper,
