Bust out the pancakes, ready for their stolen syrup worth $6 million, as Presley and Andrew discuss this black comedy about a syrup heist. All our Links: https://linktr.ee/seasononepodSeason Spoiler Synopsis: The Sticky is a 2024 Amazon Prime black comedy series based in Quebec, Canada. We follow Ruth Landry (Margo Martindale), a maple syrup farmer who finds her farm under threat as she works tirelessly to keep it going after her husband Martin fell into a coma. The leader of the Quebec Maple Association Leonard Gauthier threatened to close down the farm because technically she is running it, and it's in her husbands name. Remy Bouchard, the QMA's sole security guard, advocates for a bigger security team at the QMA but is rudely shot down by Leonard and his son Leo. Little do they know, Remy and his friend Orval have been stealing one barrel per month and making money on the side in the black market. Mike Byrne is a wannabe mobster who found himself on assignment to house sit for Charlie, his boss, after making a mistake during a heist. Remy has an idea--steal one million dollars worth of syrup from the QMA's stores before they close down the facility after harvest. While out at his birthday dinner, Remy overhears Mike on the phone discussing work when he mentioned a crime family's last name. Remy then approaches Mike with an opportunity: a maple syrup heist. Mike murders Orval to keep the heist contained to people he can trust. In a moment of frustration with Remy's uncertainty about their heist after Orval's murder, Mike puts Remy's blood soaked mittens back in their house to frame Remy. Mike approaches Ruth with an opportunity to join the heist and get some cash to save her farm. A big city cop is called in to investigate the murder of Remy's friend, leading Ruth, Remy, and Mike to race the police to a storage unit where the stolen barrels were being hidden. The group is able to narrowly get the barrels out of the storage unit and save their hides for a little while longer, until Leo introduces Remy to the new head of security at the QMA. Mike plans to kill Gary to resolve their personnel problem, while both Remy and Ruth urge him to be less violent. They agree that Remy will draw Gary out and Mike will just break one of his legs, putting him out of commission long enough to pull of their heist which must take place within a few days. Remy and Gary are checking Gary's traps when they have a heart to heart and Gary decides he'll quit because Remy was slighted by being sidestepped on a promotion. Mike goes off book and tries to shoot Gary dead to solve their problem, which results in Gary beating up Mike and Mike ultimately slipping away. Mike's actions and the unrest in the town attract a member of Mike's crime organization Bo to investigate. Bo interrogates Mike, Ruth, and Remy to uncover what they've been up to and takes over her supposed heist. Bo outs Mike as a screw-up and tells the story of his nickname, Lollipop. While Bo is upstairs chatting with Charlie, Mike, Ruth, and Remy argue loudly. Bo slams her cane into the ground to get them to shut up which snaps it and she flips over the balcony railing, falling to her supposed death. Mike hides Bo's body in a chest freezer in the garage and the next day is questioned by the police, who see some blood on the freezer. They check the freezer to find it empty much to both Mike's relief and dismay. Ruth, Remy, and Mike change their heist plan to steal the syrup via tanker in the middle of the harvest festival instead of doing it overnight. While the QMA festival is taking place and the farmers become aggressive, the crew is stealing syrup. Hearing the chants of the farmers, the crew realizes that they are on their way to the Association to take back their syrup. Ruth acts quickly to syphon some gas and throw a molotov cocktail at the foundation of a building the Association was building, creating a distraction. The crew finishes up and barely makes away with almost two full tanks of syrup while Remy's father is arrested for the murder of Orval and Bo is seen bloodied and bruised approaching Martin's hospital bed.
Dr. Martin Tarlie spent years at GMO, the iconic Boston asset manager, and now leads an award-winning investing platform, Nebo Wealth. In this Episode, Martin and Stacy discuss: His backstory: from physicist/golf-performance product developer to SaaS founder How the physics mindset that followed him into the investment world turned into a novel investing approach The massive communication gap between asset managers and investorsWhy the fascination with the 60/40 allocation is misguidedHow Nebo is helping asset managers rethink risk so they can build better portfolios More about Dr. Martin Tarlie: Dr. Tarlie is a member of GMO's Asset Allocation team and serves as the Nebo product lead. Before rejoining GMO in 2018, he was a managing director at QMA. He previously worked on GMO's Global Equity team from 2007 to 2014. Prior to that he worked at Breakwater Trading and at Marlin Capital Corp as a fundamental equity analyst and the director of research. Dr. Tarlie earned his bachelor's degree in physics from the University of Michigan, his PhD in theoretical condensed matter physics from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and his MBA from the University of Chicago. He was also a postdoctoral research fellow at the James Franck Institute at the University of Chicago and is a CFA charterholder. Opinions expressed are those of the speakers as of the date of publication, are subject to change without notice and do not necessarily reflect Mercer's opinions. The level of portfolio protection from high-quality debt instruments that generations of investors have relied with the 60/40 portfolio has been challenged. Investors need more tools in the toolkit. Gold and some currencies can protect well, but are subject to idiosyncratic risks and are noncontractual; their protective capacities are essentially market conventions or rules of thumb.Given the need to manage a range of exposures dynamically, we ask is there is a role for hedge fund strategies, which may be better equipped at managing through a transitionary period. In this episode, Deborah Wardle is joined by Dave McMillan and Dr Sushil Wadhwani, Chief Investment Officer at QMA to discuss some of the key questions surrounding the current hedge fund investing landscape and in doing so, look to answer the question of whether hedge funds are staging a comeback. This content is for institutional investors and information purposes only. Quadrant Movement Analysis: Taming the Clinical Grey AreaFAKTR Podcast Episode 15Featuring: Rob Pape, DC EPISODE SUMMARYIt's often said that "If you don't assess, it's just a guess" and that statement rings true not only in the first visit, but throughout the progression of care. As you listen to the final installment of this training, I encourage you to think about your process for assessment and re-assessment...how are you using your findings to guide and adapt your approach? In Part 1 of this training, we laid the foundation for the Quadrant Movement Analysis framework that practitioners can use to zero-in on where to begin with treatment and to continue collecting data-points through re-assessment to adapt the treatment approach as the patient progresses through care.Today, we will talk more about the hierarchy for addressing multiple subclassifications and Dr. Pape will discuss patterns of mechanical dysfunction and how they can lead back to the chief complaint.FAKTR YEAR-END SALE:Our FAKTR Year-End Sale is going on now with two special offers. As a growing percentage of Baby Boomers prepare for retirement, they are confronted with the uncomfortable prospect of record stock and bond valuations. Even the most optimistic capital market assumptions suggest the 60/40 portfolio is unlikely to deliver the returns many nest eggs have been built for. To help us get a clearer picture of the challenges and opportunities faced by retirees in the coming decade, we had the pleasure of speaking with Michael Finke (Professor of Wealth Management) and David Blanchett (Managing Director and Head of Retirement Research at QMA). Topics included: The crucial importance of updated and realistic capital market assumptions Lifespan, “healthspan” and the prospects of retirements that last well over 30 years Why ‘probability of success' is no longer an adequate yardstick for retirement planning How to prepare if we are indeed stuck in a perpetually low interest rate environment The fundamental dynamics of sequence of returns Guaranteed incomes, utility and nuance – true outcome vs probability of failure The difference between a TIPS ladder and an annuity Longevity annuities and optimal spending rates Purpose Investment's Longevity Pension Fund – combining a tontine, an annuity and a balanced portfolio Analyzing other tailored products We also discussed how any tool, no matter how sophisticated, is still bound to the ‘GIGO (Garbage In, Garbage Out) problem', why these problems are not limited to retail investors, a highly effective cake analogy to describe solutions to longevity risk, and much more. Thank you for watching and listening. See you next week. This is “ReSolve's Riffs” – live on YouTube every Friday afternoon to debate the most relevant investment topics of the day, hosted by Adam Butler, Mike Philbrick and Rodrigo Gordillo of ReSolve Global* and Richard Laterman of ReSolve Asset Management. *ReSolve Global refers to ReSolve Asset Management SEZC (Cayman) which is registered with the Commodity Futures Trading Commission as a commodity trading advisor and commodity pool operator. This registration is administered through the National Futures Association (“NFA”). Further, ReSolve Global is a registered person with the Cayman Islands Monetary Authority.
The retirement landscape is continually shifting and changing as the years go by. Each generation of retirees have new challenges and hurdles to overcome. As we are introduced to these problems, new products are developed to try and address these needs. We invite David Blanchett to the show today to discuss some of the new financial products that are on the rise and what resources advisors can tap into in order to learn about these products. About David Blanchett: David Blanchett is the Managing Director and Head of Retirement Research, DC Solutions for QMA. David conducts research primarily in the areas of financial planning, tax planning, annuities, and retirement plans. David has published over 100 papers in a variety of industry and academic journals and has won multiple awards for his work.
