Danni Carr is a trauma-informed sobriety coach and podcast host who celebrated 5 years of sobriety on the 1st of January, 2023. Danni met her husband, musician Ash Grunwald, in her early 20s and they spent the next decade travelling the world living the “Rockstar” lifestyle. But eventually, the partying caught up with Danni and alcohol started to erode what was most important in her life including her relationships and her health. In this conversation, Danni shares the turn of events that led her to finally make the decision to quit alcohol and how since that day, she's embarked on a journey of deep inner work. Danni and I were laughing a lot throughout this chat as we realised we shared many similar experiences both in our drinking stories and our sobriety journeys. In this chat, we discuss the inner contentment of choosing a life rich in quality over quantity as well as busting the myth that booze helps you to create deep connection with others. Since getting sober, Danni, has been able to quieten the inner critic that once led her to drink and has learnt how to sit in uncomfortable feelings instead of reaching for the bottle. This is her story. To see Danni's Behind The Smile photo, head to Ash's website. You can check out Danni's podcast and coaching at How I Quit Alcohol. This week I am pleased to welcome Holly Norman to the podcast. Holly is a musician and wellness pracitioner from Perth WA and a mum of 1. When Holly was growing up, her dad used to listen to big band jazz records at home, and early on she was listening regularly to classic swing and big band – Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong and so on. At the age of 11, a self confessed, late starter Holly took up the drums. She went through high school and university as a dyed-in-the-wool classical percussionist and back then you couldn't have paid her to get behind a drum set. Once she started playing in bands in her mid-twenties, Holly realised that there was a whole world of music that could become accessible to her, if she moved over to drums. As a musician Holly has worked with the likes of The Cat Empire. Ash Grunwald, the Australian String Quartet, and the West Australian and Canberra Symphony Orchestras. She released her own EP of original songs in 2013 called Hollypop, recently released a single called It's Only Weather in late 2022, and has a new song out now, called Isolation, written about the covid-19 lockdown periods experienced over the past couple of years.Holly spent 10 years as an event producer and arts manager, working on some amazing projects like the Melbourne International Jazz festival, Perth PRIDE Parade, and Perth International Jazz Festival.Holly is also passionate about health and wellness practicing yoga for over 15 years and she's also a yoga teacher. Musicians need so many different types of mobility, and functional/postural support to play their instrument, so Holly developed the Yoga for Drummers session. This episode contains discussion around miscarriage and loss.Connect with Holly - instagram / website / facebookPodcast - instagram / websiteIf today's episode is triggering for you in any way I encourage you to seek help from those around you, medical professionals or from resources on line. Two hard drinking rock stars and their partners made a pact to do the unthinkable, quit alcohol for 12 months. What seemed like an impossibility became a life changing transformation. Over three and a half years later the group caught up in the studio to reflect on the journey . We chat about the highs and lows of sobriety and the wondrous journey of discovery that never ends. The support from the other three in this group was the inspiration for this podcast and the whole HIQA community. I am always beyond grateful for Scott Owen, Clare Rantall and my hubby Ash Grunwald for this group and what has spawned from it. Madison Foley is one of Melbourne's most sought-after trumpet players. Madison began performing professionally from the age of 16 and Madison was a long-time touring member of alt-pop outfit Architecture in Helsinki and has worked with many of Australia's greats such as Ash Grunwald, Jazzlab Orchestra and Big Scary.Upon returning to gig life after the birth of her son, Madison faced the pressures of not only performing as a new mum but the pressures of pumping breast milk during gigs. The immense challenges she faced were evident with Madison pumping in some thoroughly unsuitable locations and experiencing a lack of support from venues and organisers. She realised the best way to engage venues and fellow musicians was to create an infographic that highlighted the challenges. We also discuss the challenges of being pregnant and having a baby in the midst of the covid-19 pandemic, and the judgement faced by gigging mums - that dads don't have to contend with, and why she doesn't get caught up in "mum guilt"Connect with Madison on facebook and instagramRead Madison's The Mother Lode article and infographic hereFind out more about Madison's bands Fools and JazzLab OrchestraPodcast - instagram / websiteMusic in this episode used with permissionWhen chatting to my guests I greatly appreciate their openness and honestly in sharing their stories. Ash Grunwald is one cool dude. He's never been one to follow the crowd, so it stands to reason that he's ended up living a coastal life playing super groovy blues music. It hasn't always been that cruisey, though, and Ash has learnt a whole lot about resilience and keeping calm in tough times. Thank you to Uncle Jack Charles for the acknowledgement of country. In this episode Ash and I chat about all things labels. We delve into a topic that I have recently discussed with my challenge group... Labels. How is it possible to facilitate change when we are still attached to our old labels? Sometimes we don't even realise that we will still have this old belief about ourselves. So we need to look at what labels we had on ourselves and explore the possibility of creating new ones to live by. Today, Stacy and Sam talk about the sacred science and flow to art, how we can draw on others and the Divine for inspiration and the freedom and beauty of rebellion with the amazing pyro artist, Dig. Born and raised in the beautiful Virgin Islands, Dig is the creative force behind Sacred Fire Arts. He began drawing with a passion at age 7, and began supporting himself as an artist by age 18. Since then he has gone on to work as a custom artist for over 30 years. In that time, his work has received international recognition and acclaim and has been featured in numerous print publications. Dig has been woodburning guitars for years and has had the pleasure of creating one-of-a-kind custom works of art for distinguished international musicians such as https://youtu.be/vPN6PHVwkxY (John Butler (John Butler Trio)), https://youtu.be/JfT7RR_vYCE (Michael Franti), Mama Kin, Ash Grunwald, Shawn James and Trevor Hall, as well as having his works of art being auctioned off for charity. For him, the process of designing a guitar that can be a cherished heirloom for generations to come is both an honor and a pleasure.
