Like a lighthouse surveying the waters for signs of distress, investors are challenged to shield their portfolios from potential turmoil in financial markets. But uncovering risks before they reveal themselves is a monumental task—even for the most savvy investors. Fault lines lurking in the banking sector came into view in the aftermath of Silicon Valley Bank's collapse. As a consequence of the pivot from years of ultra-low rates to the sudden tightening of monetary policy, investors must be on the lookout for new cracks that may form. In the first installment of a two-part episode, we take a closer look at the fallout from the bank crisis and where other risks could arise. Rob Kaplan, former President of the Dallas Fed, and George Patterson, Chief Investment Officer of PGIM Quantitative Solutions, discuss lessons learned from banking turmoil, the difficult path ahead for central banks, and where investors can find longer-term opportunities amid an uncertain environment.

In 1815 Nova Scotia was overrun by mice. Dr. George Patterson later interviewed people who lived through what was called Year of the Mice. The horrors of that year left a mark on those who had experienced it so deep that he found that elderly people that had personally experienced the mouse invasion still used it as a measurement of time. ‘Sixty-two Years After The Mice,' Dr. Patterson wrote that these had been no ordinary mice: “They were very destructive and actually fierce. If pursued, when hard pressed, they would stand at bay, rising upon their hind legs, setting their teeth and squealing fiercely. A farmer on whom I could rely told me that having, after planting, spread out some barley to dry in the sun before the door, in a little while he saw it covered with them. He let the cat out among them, but they actually turned upon her and fought her.” backyardhistory.ca

As Portland residents have started speaking out against far-left politicians over the homeless crisis and crime surge fueling an exodus from the city, a local real estate broker is describing the difficulty of offloading these for-sale properties."A lot of these spaces now are occupied by camps, and a lot of the homeowners now have changing circumstances," Dwell Realty broker George Patterson said on a "Mornings with Maria" panel Wednesday.According to the housing market expert, homeowners and potential buyers are "full of concerns" about the growth of homeless camps within residential neighborhoods, and it's also causing a pricing shift."They're looking at their lives and wondering, ‘How long do I continue to live here?'" Patterson noted. "And they're saying, ‘Should I live here? Should I find a home somewhere else?' And they're picking somewhere else."

Twenty-six year-old farmer George Patterson expands on his family's coal-mining heritage with a new enterprise—reclaiming abandoned mine land to grow food and restore the land for generations to come. When George's dad told him he could go to business school or go into business, he set up shop in a shipping container on a mine site, with air mattress and shotgun in tow. George worked by day and binged YouTube by night to teach himself the art and science of agriculture as an economic driver. Now he's got a full-fledged farm in not one, but seven shipping containers, with four full-time employees and zero air mattresses. And he's sleeping in a real bed, bought and paid for with his hard-earned profits. Today, business is booming, but it's not about profit for George, it's about helping a community find hope in good hard work and fantastically delicious food, food that is truly wild and wonderful like its West Virginia home.Hosted by Kate Tucker, Hope Is My Middle Name is a podcast by Consensus Digital Media in collaboration with Reasonable Volume. In Episode 9, “The Death of Trust And Its Resurrection”, Blenheim Partners’ Gregory Robinson is delighted to speak with Ian Elliot, one of Australia’s leading marketing minds.Ian learned the marketing ropes from the ground up. He began as a mail boy in Australia’s biggest advertising agency, George Patterson, and progressed to be its Chairman and CEO. Along the way he helped create some memorable and valuable brands like the Optus ‘YES’ campaign. Ian retired at just 48 years old, before transitioning to senior ASX listed NED and Chair roles. The informative and highly entertaining interview with Ian covers not just his personal and career journey but touches on some very important and prescient topics. He hits the high points of his best-selling book ‘Stop Bitching, Start Pitching’.Trust is at the heart of brand building and business success. Ian outlines examples of how he believes we are living in a period where trust has never before been breached on so many fronts. The potential commercial, economic and social implications are far reaching and disturbing. His references to the recent Royal Commission pulls no punches. Ian cements his views on trust by sharing his own stories of his experiences around the world in which trust can be earned in the most subtle of ways, whilst also presenting his proprietary formula for measuring trust expressed as a mathematical equation.‘Creating Wow Moments’ for clients is another topic Ian maintains is the key to successful profits. ‘I’m more interested in traction than transaction’ he says, ‘because repeat purchases by sticky loyal customers is the key to margin growth’. How he develops these outstanding moments of truth is fascinating.EVERYONE who hears this podcast will make a note of The Elliot Trust Formula and use it to measure the trustworthiness of those they need to rely upon. From staff to employers, to suppliers to shareholders, friends and extended family members. Most importantly he asks us to judge our own score for trustworthiness and use that to embark on a journey of continuous improvement.

This week we have a beer with ad man Michael Bannenberg. Banners, as he is better known, joined the then George Patterson advertising agency in 1980 and worked on many of the classic beer advertisements of the last three decades. He is also an active member of the Victorian Beer Label Collectors Society, collector of brewery artwork and imagery and amateur brewery historian with a wealth of knowledge about the history of Australian breweries. Banners is also co-author of the excellent book, The Brewery, a tribute to Melbourne's Carlton Brewery between 1858 to 1907, and author of Grab a Coldie, a celebration of the beer culture of the 1980s. This episode was recorded in the beer garden at The Palace Hotel in Melbourne. Send us your feedback, or leave a voice mail by calling (07) 3040 1508, that we'll play on our next show.
