Friday Juma KhutbaMay 2nd, 2025- Israel is using starvation as a weapon against Palestinians by blocking food, fuel, and medicine from entering Gaza for two months.- This act violates international humanitarian laws, which Israel has repeatedly breached without facing consequences.- France, Germany, and the UK condemned the blockade, calling it “intolerable” and rejecting the use of aid as political leverage against Hamas.- The World Food Programme reports over 116,000 tonnes of food—sufficient for one million people for four months—are blocked at access points.- A humanitarian aid ship was attacked by drones in international waters.- During Ramadhān majālis, Maulana discussed the endowments of Imam ‘Ali bin Abi Ṭālib (a), including water well projects.- Imam ‘Ali's efforts in digging wells in Medina, between Medina and Mecca, and in Iraq continue through Shi‘a charities today.- In the Battle of Ṣiffin (36 AH), Mu‘āwiyah's 85,000 troops reached the river first and blocked access to water from Imam ‘Ali's 90,000 troops.- Imam ‘Ali sent Ṣa‘ṣa‘ah bin Ṣawḥān to negotiate, warning against the cowardice of water denial and expressing readiness for battle if needed.- Mu‘āwiyah viewed water control as a strategic victory, supported by Umayyid advisors who justified the tactic by referencing ‘Uthmān's siege.- One advisor, ‘Abdullāh bin Abi Saraḥ, claimed water denial would force ‘Ali's army to retreat, equating retreat with defeat.- Ṣa‘ṣa‘ah rebuked this logic, cursing the advisor and pointing out the hypocrisy and propaganda in blaming Imam ‘Ali for ‘Uthmān's situation.- Imam ‘Ali had, in fact, ordered his sons to deliver food and water to ‘Uthmān during his siege, contrary to the claims against him.- This same propaganda was used to justify denying water to Imam Husayn and his family.- ‘Amr bin ‘Āṣ, an advisor to Mu‘āwiyah, opposed the water blockade, arguing Imam ‘Ali would not have done the same.- Mu‘āwiyah still refused access, stating: “No, by God, let them die of thirst as ‘Uthmān died.”- Imam ‘Ali responded by sending troops to force access to water.- After Mu‘āwiyah's defeat, ‘Amr bin ‘Āṣ questioned the morality of their actions; Mu‘āwiyah conceded Imam ‘Ali would not retaliate the same way.- This illustrates the moral contrast between the leadership styles of Imam ‘Ali and Mu‘āwiyah.- Despite this, many Muslims today still elevate Mu‘āwiyah's status over Imam ‘Ali, as seen in a recent Saudi documentary portraying Mu‘āwiyah favorably during Ramadhān.Donate towards our programs today: https://jaffari.org/donate/Jaffari Community Centre (JCC Live)
Shahadat of Imam Jaffer As-Sadiq (AS)25th Shawwal 1446 AHThursday, April 25th 2025- "Ja‘fari" refers to Shī‘ī fiqh based on Imam Ja‘far aṣ-Ṣādiq. - Imam aṣ-Ṣādiq had a major role in shaping Shī‘ī identity. - Shī‘ī school is rooted in the Prophet's ḥadīth of the Qur'ān and Ahlul Bayt. - Clear distinction formed between Shī‘a and Sunni (al-‘āmmah) schools. - Imam trained scholars to preserve and teach true beliefs. - Differences in ḥadīth due to unreliable or biased narrators. - Authenticity of ḥadīth must be verified, not dismissed. - Imam taught methods to resolve conflicting narrations. - Imam advocated opposing views of al-‘āmmah due to their historic opposition to Imam ‘Ali. - Imam ‘Ali recited “Bismillah” aloud in prayer; this was upheld by Imam aṣ-Ṣādiq. - Imam corrected Abū Ḥanīfah using Qur'anic references. - Jealousy against Ahlul Bayt mentioned in Qur'an (4:54). - Imam's last will narrated by his wife, Hamida.Donate towards our programs today: https://jaffari.org/donate/Jaffari Community Centre (JCC Live)
24th Ramadan 1446 AHMarch 23rd 2025- Dr. Keith Moore, a Canadian embryologist, analyzed Quranic verses and concluded that their scientific accuracy suggests divine origin. - Dr. Persaud, another Canadian professor, supported Moore's findings and stated that the Quran's descriptions of science are too precise to be coincidental. - The lecture highlights that non-Muslim scientists have recognized the Quran's truth, while many Muslims have not deeply studied it. - Imam Ali's will advises Muslims to prioritize the Quran and warns against letting others understand it before them. - Social media narratives falsely claim that the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) secretly learned scientific knowledge from others. - The Quraysh initially called the Prophet a poet, then a sorcerer, and finally insane, but never accused him of learning from scholars. - Historical evidence does not support claims that the Prophet acquired knowledge from experts in medicine or astronomy. - Opponents of Islam feared the Quran's impact and warned people to avoid hearing its verses. - The Prophet's teachings continued to spread despite opposition, showing that accusations against him were baseless. - The Quran remains a source of knowledge and guidance, and its connection to scientific facts strengthens its credibility.Donate towards our programs today: https://jaffari.org/donate/Jaffari Community Centre (JCC Live)

Eve of 20th Ramadan 1446 AHMarch 19th 2025- Imam Ali divided his life into four phases, with a focus on his 25 years of silence, during which he worked the land to support his family and engaged in charitable acts. - He established numerous endowments (waqf) by cultivating land, planting palm trees, and digging wells to make barren lands arable. - His endowment deed was made purely for seeking Allah's pleasure, ensuring benefits for the poor, his family, and the broader society. - His properties in Yanbu, Wadi al-Qura, Daymah, Udhaynah, and Faqirayn were designated as waqf, with their revenues used for charity and supporting Banu Hashim and Banu Muttalib. - Imam Ali appointed Imam Hasan as the custodian of the waqf, granting him full authority to manage and distribute its resources as needed, including settling debts if necessary. - If Imam Hasan passed away, the custodianship would transfer to Imam Husayn, with the same responsibilities and authority. - If both Hasan and Husayn were no longer alive, the next custodian would be chosen from Imam Ali's sons or, if necessary, from the descendants of Abu Talib or Banu Hashim. - The waqf properties could not be sold, gifted, or inherited, and only their revenues were to be used for designated charitable and familial purposes. - Imam Ali also freed several of his slaves, ensuring their welfare and sustenance for a transition period, and set clear conditions for their continued service. - He personally wrote and signed this endowment deed in 37 AH, ensuring witnesses were present to validate its legitimacy. Friday Juma KhutbaFebruary 21st, 2025- Imam ‘Ali (a) in epistle #53 to Mālik al-Ashtar emphasizes that society prospers when all classes support each other, as no class is independent. - He identifies seven societal classes: the army, judiciary, executive branch, revenue officers, bureaucracy, traders and industrialists, and the lowest class. - He urges compassion and responsibility toward the lowest class: the poor, destitute, penniless, and disabled, stressing that fulfilling their rights is a heavy but necessary duty for leaders. - Criticism of the U.S. administration for undermining minority rights by dismantling Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives, ignoring the immigrant nature of North America. - Some Canadian politicians have also targeted minorities through legal measures, such as Stephen Harper's government auditing charities for political activity via the CRA's Review and Analysis Division (RAD). - Between 2008–2015, RAD audited 16 charities, revoking 8 statuses—6 of which were Muslim-led. Overall, 12 out of 14 revoked charities since RAD's inception were Muslim. - Pro-Israeli charities faced consequences only after complaints from Muslim and other groups. - In the current Liberal Party leadership race, Chrystia Freeland promises to eliminate RAD; the NCCM urges action to end both RAD and Islamophobia in the CRA. - Past promises from Justin Trudeau to eliminate RAD remained unfulfilled. - Religious teachings on the merits of fasting during Sha‘bān: - Fasting 16-30 days brings escalating spiritual rewards, from extinguishing hellfire to receiving heavenly blessings. - Specific rewards include the closing of hell's gates, opening of paradise's gates, receiving palaces of jewels, marrying heavenly beings, and angelic blessings. - Completing 30 days of fasting leads to divine forgiveness, erasing all past sins regardless of their magnitude. Friday Juma KhutbaFebruary 7th, 2025• The stability of a society is based on justice, as the slogan “no justice, no peace” reflects a universal truth. • In the U.S., both Republican and Democratic leaders have abused their power by pardoning family members, friends, and supporters. • Trump's executive orders aimed at deporting pro-Palestine protesters are no different from the actions of Democrats who silenced Palestinian voices at their conventions. • Both Republicans and Democrats align with billionaires and social influencers—proving no real difference between their goals, only in how they present themselves. • No leader or official should be above the law. Justice applies to everyone, no matter their rank. • Imam ‘Ali (a) is a timeless example of justice, as demonstrated when he personally implemented the punishment on Walid bin ‘Uqbah for leading prayers while intoxicated. • Historians call Imam ‘Ali “The Voice of Human Justice” because of his insistence on fairness and equality, even at the cost of his life. • Trump's plan to take over Gaza has been universally condemned as “ethnic cleansing” by global leaders, including the UN Secretary-General. • Justice is superior to generosity, as stated by Imam ‘Ali (a): “Justice puts things in their places, while generosity takes them out of their directions.” • The true leader is one who upholds justice and brings peace, as seen in the lives of the Ahlul Bayt (a). 4th Imam Husayn (AS) Wiladat Sunday, February 2nd 2025 -- ‘Abbās' devotion to Imām Ḥusayn reflects the deep impact of his parents' upbringing, especially his mother, Ummul Banīn. - Family background is crucial in spouse selection; the Prophet emphasized hereditary traits from the maternal side. Imam ‘Ali sought a courageous lineage and married Ummul Banīn based on his brother ‘Aqīl's advice. - Imam ‘Ali prioritized Ḥasan and Ḥusayn over his other sons, as seen in the battle of Ṣiffīn and his will, highlighting their unique status as the Prophet's descendants. - ‘Ali and Ummul Banīn raised their children with deep respect and sacrifice for Ahlul Bayt. ‘Abbās' loyalty to Imām Ḥusayn was a direct result of this upbringing. - ‘Abbās had four sons and two daughters, with his lineage continuing through ‘Ubaydullāh, a scholar and virtuous figure. His descendants remained loyal to Ahlul Bayt even during the ghaybat-e sughra. - The title “Qamaru Bani Hāshim” comes from Ummul Banīn's dream before marriage, symbolizing ‘Abbās' destiny as a shining figure of loyalty and sacrifice.
Mi'raj and Mabath of the Holy Prophet (SAW) Monday, January 27th 2025 - The 27th of Rajab marks two significant events: the beginning of Qur'ānic revelation (Mab‘ath) and the Prophet's ascension (Mi‘rāj) to the holiest station, sidratu 'l-muntaha. - The Qur'ān, as God's final message, was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad (s) and appeals to human intellect, common sense, and thought, guiding them toward piety and God-consciousness. - God has described the Qur'ān with several names, each reflecting its purpose, such as Al-Furqān (criterion), Adh-Dhikr (reminder), An-Nūr (light), Al-Kitāb (book), and Ash-Shifā' (healing). - Unlike previous scriptures that were subject to distortion or loss, the Qur'ān has been divinely protected from alteration, as confirmed in verse 15:9. - The Qur'ān is preserved through widespread recitation, memorization by millions, and its division into thirty parts for easier recitation, especially during Ramaḍān. - Understanding the Qur'ān requires knowledge of classical Arabic, historical context, and the life of the Prophet, as it was revealed in his environment and life events. - The Qur'ān contains clear (muḥkamāt) and allegorical (mutashābihāt) verses, with the latter requiring interpretation by those firmly-rooted in knowledge, such as the Prophet and Ahlul Bayt. - Sunni scholars often separate "Allāh" from "those firmly-rooted in knowledge" in interpreting verse 3:7, whereas Shī‘ah scholarship considers both capable of understanding allegorical verses. - Imam ‘Ali, as a witness to the first revelation, described his unique spiritual experience and connection to the Prophet, affirming his role as the Prophet's vicegerent. - The Prophet left behind two guiding entities: the Qur'ān and his Ahlul Bayt, with ‘Ali bin Abi Ṭālib recognized as the "gateway to the city of knowledge." In his last days, knowing death was imminent, Prophet Muhammad called his uncle Abbas and Imam Ali. He asked his uncle to carry out his will and settle his affairs after the prophet's death. When the uncle demured, the prophet asked Imam Ali, who accepted. The Prophet also gave Imam Ali his sword, battle gear, and ring.Three days before his passing, the prophet went to the masjid and asked if anyone had a grievance against him, and offered to let them seek retribution. A man stepped forth saying that the prophet had accidentally hit him on the stomach once. The prophet said he could seek whatever retribution eh wanted. The man asked the prophet to remove his shirt and then kissed the prophet on his stomach. At one point Ammar bin Yasir asked the Prophet how his ghusul and burial should be conducted, and the propeht replied that it would be done by "Ali ibn Abi Talib, for no part of my body will he touch without the angels aiding him in doing so"Another time, when the prophet was weak, he woke up from sleep and asked for "my brother and companion." Aisha said to summon Abu Bakr, when when the prophet woke up again saw him sitting there he turned away from the man. After Abu Bakr's departure the prophet again asked for "my brother and companion." Usman's daughter Umm Salma had Usman summoned, yet he received the same treatment fromt the prophet. When the prophet called for "my brother and companion" a third time, Imam Ali was summoned and the Prophet spoke to him privately for a long time. When asked what they spoke about, Imam Ali replied "He taught me a thousand doors (of knowledge) and each door opens a thousand more. He also entrusted me with responsibilities that, God willing, I will fulfil"Lecture notes available at http://www.why-quran.org/?p=800.Subscribe at http://www.why-quran.org/subscribe to watch the lectures live and participate in the Q&A at the end of each class.Video recording of this lecture + Q&A available on YouTube at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ojs3bdeq37o&list=PLpkB0iwLgfTat-Pgh4W3WFmupPamiC9UT.
In these last few days, many of the companions explicitly disregarded the prophet's instructions in order to secure political power after his demise. The prophet had attempted to prevent their schemes by instructing many of the senior companions to leave Medina with Usama ibn Zayd, so that Imam Ali could assume leadership without interference, but many delayed and made excuses. Some hypocrites were known, but others were skilled at hiding their hypocrisy as proven by the failed assassination attempt. In the even known as "The Calamity of Thursday", while Prophet Muhammad lay on his death bed he decided to take an extra step to explicitly document the his successor and asked for something to write to leave a message "after which you'll never go astray."However, a group of companions who were around him at the time, including Umar, realized that the prophet was planning to document his succession plan and started to strongly object and shout, prompting Prophet Muhammad to order them to leave. The lecture analyzes the various Sunni sources which indicate that the opposition group, which Umar was part of, started saying prophet was "going insane."The fact that these people were willing to sling mud on the prophet's sanity showed to the prophet the futility of writing down his will later. If he were to do so, those people would cast the same aspersions on the prophet's will, casting doubts on his sanity during every instance where he designated Imam Ali as his successor. This could be potentially stretched back all the way to revelation, and the spread of such slander would put people's belief in Islam itself at risk.Lecture notes available at http://www.why-quran.org/?p=796.Subscribe at http://www.why-quran.org/subscribe to watch the lectures live and participate in the Q&A at the end of each class.Video recording of this lecture + Q&A available on YouTube at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yBxvKOHjZcM&list=PLpkB0iwLgfTat-Pgh4W3WFmupPamiC9UT.
Quran Garden - The Holy Quran Explained in Clear English (English Tafsir)
In today's Tafsir, we uncover the unique wisdom of Imam Ali as he offers an unconventional remedy for pain, blending Quranic insights from Aya 4 of Surah An-Nisaa with natural elements. Discover how three blessed components create a remarkable healing potion, revealing the connection between spiritual wisdom and physical health. Letâs get started.
After Prophet Muhammad declared Ali ibn Abi Talib's successorship, the angel Gabriel descended with an extension of the verse Quran 5:3, adding "today I have perfected your religion for you, and I have completed my blessing upon you, and I have approved Islam as your religion", showing that there's a version of Islam that's perfected and a version that's incomplete. After the kutba, the people were commanded to pledge allegiance to Imam Ali, and the prophet instructed them to greet him with the title Commander of the Faithful. The Prophet instructed Ali to sit in a tent across from his own tent and ordered the Muslims to enter in groups to congratulate him and refer to him with the new title. This process took three days, and included the Muajirun, Ansar, outling Arab tribes, and the prophet's wives.By requiring the Muslim community to personally greet Ali with the new title, the Prophet legitimized Imam Ali's position and left no room for doubt in the mind of anyone present. Many sources say the companions of the prophet came to Imam Ali and congratulated him on the leadership. The first to address him was Umar ibn Al-Khattab, saying "O Ali, you have become my master and the master of every momin and momina"After the three days had passed in Ghadir, a man from the tribe of Banu Makhzum (a staunch enemy of the prophet) arrived and said "O Muhammad, I wish to ask you about three matters..." and he asked if the shahadah, if the laws of islam, and if Ali's successorship was from the prophet or from Allah. When the prophet replied that they were all from Allah, the man became very angry and said "Oh Allah, if Muhammad is truthful then blast me with fire" and within minutes he was struck by lightning.Lecture notes available at http://www.why-quran.org/?p=777.Subscribe at http://www.why-quran.org/subscribe to watch the lectures live and participate in the Q&A at the end of each class.Video recording of this lecture + Q&A available on YouTube at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S9hESB_xSZA&list=PLpkB0iwLgfTat-Pgh4W3WFmupPamiC9UT.
Prophet Muhammad was worried about people rebelling against him if he announced Imam Ali as his successor, so he delayed following the message to formalize his succesorship as long as he was allowed to.The wisdom of this showed by how during the hajj. Some companions of the Prophet had suspected the Prophet would announce Imam Ali as his successor at hajj and whenever the prophet would give a sermon that veered towards this topic, they would become agitative and make noise in order to derail the announcement. After the hajj, the Muslims started travelling back towars their home towns, with the Yemenis going south, and the Meccans remaining behind in Mecca, while the prophet and others went north to Medina. At this time Gabriel once again conveyed Allah's command to the Prophet to announce his successor and this time also promised His protection. Perphaps after the groups had split the munafiqeen were in too small a number to cause any trouble, and Prophet Muhammad announced Imam Ali as his successor.Lecture notes available at http://www.why-quran.org/?p=766.Subscribe at http://www.why-quran.org/subscribe to watch the lectures live and participate in the Q&A at the end of each class.Video recording of this lecture + Q&A available on YouTube at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_2uO-I_ZiWo&list=PLpkB0iwLgfTat-Pgh4W3WFmupPamiC9UT.
Prophet Muhammad sent a mission to Yemen to invite them to Islam. The first mission was led by Khalid ibn Al-Walid, who was a harsh man who had fought against the Muslims in the Battle of Uhud, but he had an aristrocratic background and by making him feel valued Prophet Muhammad had hoped to turn him into a productive member of the Muslim community. However once in Yemen, instead of following the prophetic principles of dawah Khalid hastily resorted to violence. The Tribe of Numayr, feeling threatened, sent a delegation to the Prophet in Medina to ask for protection from Khalid. The Prophet sent Imam Ali to Yemen to do damage control and instructed Khalid's men to follow him instead. While sending Imam Ali he gave him various bits of advice, emphasizing the need to display wisdom, to soften people's hearts, and to remain upright. The prophet emphasized the importance of avoiding bloodshed if possible, to the point where he said to not even engage in battle unless they kill one of your men first, and to even then first give them a chance to repent.Lecture notes available at http://www.why-quran.org/?p=754.Subscribe at http://www.why-quran.org/subscribe to watch the lectures live and participate in the Q&A at the end of each class.Video recording of this lecture + Q&A available on YouTube at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZfXL7MqjgOU&list=PLpkB0iwLgfTat-Pgh4W3WFmupPamiC9UT.
In the last months of the prophet's life, Gabriel descended to the prophet conveying a message from Allah: "There remain two obligations that you must convey to your people: the obligation of Hajj, and the obligation of Wilayah (the guardianship and succession) after you. For indeed, I have never left My earth without a proof, and I will never leave it without one." The Prophet had often spoken about Imam Ali's unique rank, but hadn't formalized his succession in front of a large audience. Prophet Muhammad ordred all who could to join him in his Hajj, about 70-124,000 people joined, and sent a message to Imam Ali, who was still in Yemen, to also join with his men. When nearing Mecca, Imam Ali rushed ahead to meet the Prophet, leaving Abu Rafi al-Qibti in charge of the men. When Imam Ali returned he saw that for their Ihram those men had put on the fine Yemeni fabrics, a khums collected from Yemen. Imam Ali reprimanded them and ordered them removed and repacked immediately. While this was the just course of action, this disciplining would natrually lead to tension being created between him and his troops. After the they all returned to Mecca, Imam Ali was praying in the sacred mosquen when a begger entered and asked for charity. Without interrupting his prayer, from ruku Imam Ali extendeded his hand and offered his ring to the beggar. At this moment some companions were with the prophet as the verse was revealed "Your guardian is only Allah, his Prophet, and the faithful who maintain the prayer and give charity while bowing down."During hajj, the prophet often emphasized the two weightly things he was leaving behind: the Quran and the Ahlul Bayt. During this time Allah repeatedly instructed the prophet to make his succession announcement, but concerns about the potential backlash from some companions kept Prophet Muhammad from doing so until Allah sent a promise of protection. The Prophet's concern about backlash from his companions foreshadowed the opposition Imam Ali would later encounter.Lecture notes available at http://www.why-quran.org/?p=762.Subscribe at http://www.why-quran.org/subscribe to watch the lectures live and participate in the Q&A at the end of each class.Video recording of this lecture + Q&A available on YouTube at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7NoMKBn89Pc&list=PLpkB0iwLgfTat-Pgh4W3WFmupPamiC9UT.
The Qaim Aba Al-Sadiq Abdullah Hashem sits down with Faraz Al-Almahdi and delves deep into the narrations of the Ahlul Bayt (as) regarding the profound connections between the Qaim and the Prophets before him. Specifically, he explores the unique "sunnah" of the Prophets that the Qaim embodies, focusing on the parallels with Prophet Jesus. In this enlightening discussion, the Qaim reveals how Imam Ali (as) prayed for a particular quality to be present in the Qaim, aligning him closely with the divine mission of Jesus. Aba Al-Sadiq sheds light on how he, as the Qaim, fulfills one of the essential laws of Jesus, embodying the spiritual legacy of his mission. Throughout the conversation, many insightful parallels between these two messianic figures are drawn, revealing a shared purpose and a continuity of divine guidance. As the Qaim explains, this alignment is not merely symbolic but represents a profound connection to the spirit of God that has flowed through all the Prophets, from Adam to Jesus, and now to the Qaim himself.
"Why are you even a Shia?" - The words which we hear all too often, particularly now, between the emotive seasons of Ghadeer and Muharram. Full title: Battle of Siffin: The Intrigues Against Imam Ali's Statebuilding Project & Its Legacy in the Modern Middle East This talk explores the politics and legacy of the Battle of Siffin — a foundational moment in the early political memory and history of Islam that pitted Imam Ali ibn Abi Talib against a rebellion in Syria led by Mu'awiya ibn Abi Sufyan. As the first Shi'a Imam and fourth Sunni Caliph, the figure of Ali looms large in the consciousness of Muslims from the very early Islamic period until today. The talk is divided into two sections. The first explores the dialogue and politics between Ali and the diverse battle factions in his army at the Battle of Siffin. It analyzes Imam Ali's state building project, the interests of various elite generals and divisions within Imam Ali's army, the context behind internal Muslim conflict and the political order of the early Islamic state, and the distinctions made by Ali regarding the roots and reasons behind internal civil conflict within the Muslim body politic. The second section analyzes how contemporary thinkers and scholars in the modern Middle East have interpreted the legacy of Imam Ali, the Battle of Siffin, and the "First Muslim Civil War” as a lens through which to understand the intersection between early Islamic history and modern political theology as well as debates over governance and statecraft in contemporary Islamic intellectual thought. Speaker: Dr. Mohammad Sagha, Lecturer in the Modern Middle East, Department of Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations (NELC), Harvard University This event took place on April 29, 2024.
