Recently we have been talking about Breezy's growth a lot on the show and it is always a little jarring to look back on things she used to do in her past life so we are putting one of her past behaviors on the savage scale this morning to see if she still stands by it OR if her opinion on the matter has changed. The other day a friend reminded Breezy of a move she pulled back in college to one of her friends, turning her read receipts on her phone without her knowing. Will Breezy stand up this, and more importantly... what do you think about today's savage or sensible Turning on Someone's Read Receipts Without Asking Them.
We had the pleasure of interviewing WAAX over Zoom video! The beating heart of the Australian post-punk scene, WAAX, have released their highly anticipated second studio album, At Least I'm Free, via Dew Process. The band have also shared the music video for the k.flay co-written, high octane LP standout “No Doz,” which follows on the heels of the biting, incendiary singles already released from the album: the QMA Award winning “Most Hated Girl,” the Linda Perry co-written “Dangerous” and “Read Receipts.” Speaking on the Phoebe Faye-directed video for “No Doz,” the band's singer Maz DeVita had this to say: “‘No Doz' is about control. More specifically it's about losing it. In the video I have no control in the shopping trolley. I am at the mercy of the band who is pushing me around. The video reflects the newer, fresher vibe that we were going for when writing ‘No Doz.' It's filled with energy, reckless abandon and bursts of color.”On At Least I'm Free, WAAX teamed up with the production team behind their debut breakout album Big Grief - Bernard Fanning (Powderfinger) and Grammy winner Nick DiDia (Bruce Springsteen, Pearl Jam, Rage Against The Machine). The result is an honest and indignant album laden with raw vulnerability and contrasted by the high octane energy WAAX is renowned for.We want to hear from you! 1. I am a 40-something male on the online/swipey app dating scene. I have had rotten luck and I am interested in whether turning off “read receipts” on WhatsApp is putting women off. I like the freedom that turning off “read receipts” gives me. At the same time I worry I am giving into my fears of rejection, possibly ego-trapping myself. Why does it feel empowering to turn off “read receipts” on WhatsApp and is this potentially putting off women who may think I have a hidden agenda? 2. I have found that my desire for sex has significantly declined. So, my question is: am I a freak of nature? Or is something else potentially going on that could be corrected? 3. I’ve been fixated on losing 7-10 more pounds for the last 2 years but the weight just does not come off. Is there something I could do to actually lose this weight? Or how can I convince my mind that this is it and just be happy about it? 4. I remember in high school being taught the concept of critical thinking skills. The more I enhance my knowledge of evolutionary psychology and see certain personality types on social media promote conspiracy theories, I believe teaching these concepts are limited. It appears critical thinking skills and questioning authenticity can be finessed for those with the personality type, but I no longer think it’s a skill set that can be universally taught. Am I viewing this incorrectly as I come up-to-speed on EP? What other American school system skill sets cannot be universally taught due to our differences in personality types? 5. Why is it funny to us when we see animals doing silly things? 6. Why do people love to solo dance so much? 7. Why in the world would someone literally only want to be listened to?

Faster than you can order a pizza from a bot, Rebecca and Jason are back from their break…meaning Jason is back from vacation. While he was away, Rebecca demonstrated her remarkable strength by doing some body work on her car (in heels) and also tried to work her mind around college graduates that struggle with common sense. But all is well because bots are taking over the world, or at least taking pizza orders and keeping cactus safe. Jason helps Rebecca wage war against technology, and her privacy, by showing her how to turn off read receipts. Next on the agenda, end public flossers. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/life-in-the-slow-lane/message
Luke welcomes Bad Reception co-creators Justin Michael (Buddy Thunderstruck, Adam Ruins Everything) and Eric Martin to the studio for an epic throwdown over whether or not it's insane that Eric has the "read receipt" function enabled on his texts. Is he making life more difficult than it needs to be, or should he be celebrated as a crusader for upholding honesty and truth in our unwritten social contract? Later, Eric explains how the time he was most wrong got him fired movie trailer narration job, and Justin has some choice words for people who hate on L.A. Here it is! The second episode of a new Verge podcast called Why’d You Push That Button. On this show, my colleague, Circuit Breaker’s Ashley Carman, and me, the Culture section’s most self-indulgent blogger, talk about all the tiny decisions your gadgets and apps force you to make every day. All day, every day, we’re pushing buttons and thinking about the intended or unintended consequences. We’re interviewing consumers — including friends, co-workers, loved ones, and some strangers — and then we’re talking to product designers and experts who built the tech or have studied it professionally. Last week, we started things off with Tinder’s Super Like feature. This week, we’re talking about read receipts — the timestamp that’s optional in iMessage and mandatory in Facebook Messenger, that lets anyone who’s trying to correspond with you know exactly when you saw their words and chose not to respond. Why do you leave them on? Why do you turn them off? Why must you insist on subtly manipulating every person in your life? We heard from our friends who have made these choices, and then we took their responses to Lujayn Alhddad, who studied human-computer interaction while obtaining her master's degree at the Rochester Institute of Technology. She wrote a paper on this exact topic, and she knows what’s up. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

We start by debating one of the great questions of our time: should you or should you not use read receipts on your text messages? Jenna feels strongly one way, Wesley the exact opposite. So we call our pal Juliet Litman, managing editor of The Ringer, for a third opinion. Next, we consider the significance of shows like “The OA” and “Search Party” and what they mean for how young people are depicted on screen in 2017. Finally, Wesley takes a breath and says goodbye to President Obama.
How you use or not use text message Read Receipts says much about how you think.
