The ides of March are on the horizon as so is the latest podcast, filling your cup and then some with all that's happening in the world of sports. On deck: (3:22) As we inch closer to the end of this Sports Dead Zone, Pt. 1, there have been a few things percolating which starts us off with the NBA. Mavericks guard, Luka Doncic has been on a triple double tear, recording six straight of the 30 point variety (which surpassed Russell Westbrook's five). Despite his brilliance and production, will it be enough for a deep playoff run come April? Lakers forward, Anthony Davis had a monster game last night where he scored 27 points, 25 rebounds, 7 steals, 5 assists and 3 blocks. Is LA looking to move up and out of the play-in tournament bracket? The injury bug continues to hit the Association as Steph Curry had a scare with a sprained ankle. Indiana will be without Benedict Mathurin for the rest of the year with a torn right labrum. And the Timberwolves won't have Karl Anthony Towns for at least the remainder of the regular season as he recovers from meniscus surgery. They are beginning to slip in the Western Conference. Will they fall further down in the standings without their big man? I'll check on what's happening in both conferences as we're almost a month away from seasons' end. (20:21) Conference Tournament week has arrived in college basketball as we're just ten days away from the Madness tipping off. I'll go through which teams are on the bubble from making the tournament and what they'll need to do to get to the dance? Then you had the melee down in South Carolina between the LSU Tigers and Gamecocks in the women's game yesterday afternoon. It was a not so pretty scene toward the end of their matchup with Kamilla Cardoso among five other players ejected from the dustup involving Flau'jae Johnson pushing a Gamecocks player. (27:51) The NHL trade deadline has come and gone. It was a feeding frenzy for contending teams trying to fortify their rosters for the stretch run. The one team who came up smelling like roses are the Carolina Hurricanes, picking up Evgeni Kuznetsov from Washington and Jake Guentzel from Pittsburgh. Are those the missing pieces for a Hurricane team that's looking to go to the next level? I'll recap what other teams (FLA, VGK & BOS, among others) did right before 3pm on Friday. Don't look now, but the Islanders are the hottest team in the league at the moment, winners of six in a row and currently second in the Wild Card standings. Is their recent play sustainable in order to secure a playoff spot in the East? I'll see what else is going on the ice as teams ramp up over the last 16-18 games before the playoffs commence. (40:52) Football fans! The NFL's ‘new season' will raise its curtain on Wednesday. There's been a ton of activity over the past few days, including Russell Wilson's new home in Pittsburgh. You KNOW I have a lot to say about this! Plus, who else got cut, who retired, who's staying put and who could be on the move as we're 48 hours from this show note from the free agent window opening. (50:39) Baseball is ready to usher in their season two weeks from Thursday, but all is mostly quiet on this front. The Red Sox sign a pitcher! (No, it's not Blake Snell or Jordan Montgomery). A former Red goes home to Toronto (Joey Votto) and his former teammate (Noelvi Marte) was busted for using performance enhancing drugs and will sit out 80 games. (54:35) Lastly, there was a heavyweight fight in boxing last Friday. Anthony Joshua KO'd former UFC/MMA fighter Francis Ngannou in the second round of a fight that was not on my radar. Did anyone watch or care? I'm honored to welcome in a new partnership to the podcast. Are you familiar with Olipop soda? Jesse Atlas is a writer/director that crafts high-concept, character-driven genre thrillers. His feature debut "Assassin" hits theaters in the spring of 2023. Previously, Jesse's mind-bending sci-fi short films "Record/Play" and "Let Them Die Like Lovers" have played at Sundance, Tribeca, Fantastic Fest and countless other festivals, racking up dozens of awards and accolades. Both films were picked up for feature adaptations, with "Let Them Die Like Lovers" evolving into "Assassin". Before making narratives, Jesse honed his skills as an editor of trailers, music videos, commercials, and documentaries. In this interview, Jesse talks about moving from theater to films, getting your foot in the door as an editor, influence from Martin Scorsese, fighting for attention with shorts, and why first-time filmmakers need to learn to write to make a name for themselves. As an editor and a drummer, I've been banging the drum — literally in many instances — about the connection between the two. Director/drummer combos range from Stanley Kubrick to Bob Fosse to Damien Chazelle. On today's episode I'm joined by Heath Metzger, drummer for the beloved Evansville/Newburgh band Mock Orange, who edits some of the band's projects, and Christopher Roldan, an editor who used to drum for the Himalayans, which featured a pre-Counting Crows Adam Duritz. On this episode, we discuss:- Why drumming concepts like rhythm, release, syncopation, and sustains overlap in film editing;- Metzger's ever-expanding “hobby” of editing the band's projects being informed by his drumming;- how Roldan overcame a youthful need to be “perfect” to come back to playing drums in recent years;- and how an interest in guitar players and melody really opens things up when figuring out more colorful rhythms and beats. Also:- Why Chris thinks this topic is obvious- (spoiler: he's worked on projects where every editor is also a drummer);- if editing is has more in common with live music or studio playing;- similarities in pacing setlists, album tracklists, and feature films;- and how Mock Orange's new guitar player, also a well-respected local drummer himself, is changing live playing for Heath.Heath Metzger is drummer for Mock Orange and had a hand in editing their newest concert special, the “Virtual Intertainment Computer Special.” Tickets for the event are currently on sale and the special will be available VOD for 24 hours starting May 25. You can find out more about Mock Orange at their website, where their latest releases, The Record Play 20th Anniversary Reissue and The Bridge EP, are available. Chris Roldan has edited on narrative films for directors Richard Linklater and Terrence Malick, documentaries (A Brave Heart: The Lizzie Velasquez Story, Abortion: Stories Women Tell), along with television shows for HBO, Facebook, Jerry Bruckheimer Television, TNT, Oxygen, TLC and the Discovery Channel. He is also an editing instructor at the University of Texas and was voted one of its top ten professors in 2015. You can find out more at Roldan's website.

Formed in Evansville, IN during the late 90's, Mock Orange gained a devoted following amongst indie-rock circles for progressive, whiplash time signatures, buoyed by sentimental yet urgent lyrics. Though the quartet's debut album Nines & Sixes provided an addictive and aggressive spark, 2000's The Record Play delivered a deeper and more nuanced emotional payout: Singer/guitarist Ryan Grisham's wordplay (drenched in poetic metaphors on time and distance), drummer Heath Metzger's prog-like precision and the clear, masterful production style of Mark Trombino made the album somewhat of an underground touchstone for early 2000's emo. On today's show, Ryan talks about piecing together the thematic nature of The Record Play two decades later, why turning 40 gave him a new outlook on the band's first album and how he managed -- long before iPods -- to play his beloved 7" collection on the road. This episode also features the WORLD PREMIERE of the band's new single "So Maybe," from their upcoming EP The Bridge, their first release in nearly four years. Vinyl for both The Bridge, as well as a 20th anniversary repress of The Record Play, will be available for pre-order via mockorange.net later this month.
