In this episode, recorded during the opening reception on February 27, 2025, Discovery Park's senior director of exhibits and collections, Jennifer Wildes, conducts a brief interview and Q&A with Dunn. He shares the inspiration behind Reelfoot Critters, his creative process, and insights into his distinctive style. Along the northwestern edge of Tennessee sits Reelfoot Lake. The only natural lake in the state, it's a flooded cypress forest that has more in common with the bayous of the deep south than other more open and expansive lakes of the surrounding area. Yet this lake dates back only two centuries and owes its creation to the massive New Madrid earthquakes that rocked the area in 1811-1812 and caused the Mississippi River to temporarily flow backward. Yet according to local legend the cause of those earthly upheavals was more than simply nature. Legend says that the origins of Reelfoot Lake can be traced back to the actions of a Chief of the Chickasaw people who once inhabited the now submerged land. In the Season 1 finale, we bring you part two of the story of Reelfoot Lake. What began as a series of protests against a wealthy businessman blocking local access to drain and log the lake, quickly morphed into something much darker and violent. We hope you enjoy the story of the Nightriders of Reelfoot Lake!
"In 1811, on board a steamboat named the New Orleans, Nicholas Roosevelt pioneered steam travel down the Mississippi and Ohio Rivers. "As the New Orleans passed along the western border of the state of Tennessee, the first shocks of an earthquake struck near New Madrid, Mo. on December the 16th. Villages were destroyed, bluffs along the Mississippi fell into the river, ravines opened as far south as Natchez. As a result of the earthquake of 1811, the ground in the northwestern corner of Tennessee collapsed and giant waves from the Mississippi flowed to fill the depression, reversing the flow of the Mighty River and forming Reelfoot Lake. (Awakening musical Interlude) "This tune is called Awakening. It is RoadMusic® written especially for this part of our journey along the Natchez Trace Parkway through Tennessee. "Steamboats helped bring an end to pioneer travel along the Natchez Trace in the early 1800s. At a pivotal point in this rapidly changing world stood a truly remarkable year. "Annus mirabilis 1811. "Join us next time when we will visit SWEETWATER BRANCH, GLENROCK BRANCH and DOGWOOD MUDHOLE. For Natchez Trace a road through the wilderness, I'm Frank Thomas." "Annus mirabilis -- miraculous year. This comes from Jonathan Daniels story of the Natchez Trace, The Devil's Backbone. "In 1811 the steamboat pioneer, Robert Fulton, hired Nicholas Roosevelt to travel the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers to see if a steamboat could navigate them. Roosevelt and his bride took there honeymoon 6 months on board a flatboat to check out the rivers and determined that it was indeed possible for a steamboat to negotiate the currents. So Roosevelt built a steamboat named the New Orleans, and in the fall of 1811, Nicholas and his wife, an engineer, a pilot, six hands and a dog set out from Pittsburgh on board a 300 ton steamboat, headed for Natchez and points south. "As though announcing the beginning of this new era of river travel, a great comet shown against a moonlit night, as the New Orleans made its way down the river past Louisville, Kentucky. "After the New Orleans sailed past the section of the Mississippi River that lies along the western border of the state of Tennessee, the first shocks of an earthquake struck near New Madrid, Mo. on December the 16th. "On our next program we will finish our story of the miraculous year of 1811 with the forming of Reelfoot Lake while we listen to a bit of RoadMusic® along the way. For Natchez Trace a road through the wilderness, I'm Frank Thomas." For more about Natchez Trace: A Road Through the Wilderness, visit eddieandfrank.com
In Northwest Tennessee, just across the Mississippi river from New Madrid, Missouri is a flooded cypress forest called Reelfoot lake. Spanning 15,000 acres, this shallow, peaceful lake is a birding and fishing paradise. But despite it's placid waters, Reelfoot Lake and the region it inhabits has a grim history starting with it's violent creation as a result of the New Madrid Earthquake. In this first episode of a two part series, we tell the story of one of the largest earthquakes in recorded US history and how it changed the geography of the Riverlands.

In late January, the duck hunting community was shocked when the news broke out of Reelfoot Lake that two duck hunters had been killed, and a manhunt for the alleged killer was underway. Rumors ran rampant, especially when the body of the suspect was recovered. Now that the dust has settled, we've learned the truth is different than what rumors led most hunters to believe. But the murders still leave many unanswered questions. The Gamekeeper Podcast welcomes Outdoor Life Senior Deputy Editor Natalie Krebs, who interviewed the only witness, and other Reelfoot hunters, to write a very compelling story of the events that occurred that fateful day. A GoFundMe has been set up for the families and funeral expenses of the two men who were killed. To donate, click here. In late January, a small-town crime made national news and shook the waterfowl hunting world to its core. During the final week of Tennessee's duck season, two hunters were shot and killed on Reelfoot Lake. A third hunter—suspected of killing both young men—was missing for nearly a week before his body was discovered. One witness survived. All four men involved in the incident were loved and highly regarded by their friends and families. None of them had a criminal record. This week, we take an in-depth look at what the investigation has uncovered about this tragic shooting, discuss the survivor's side of the story, and examine the elements of the case that remain a mystery. Find the direct quotes from the survivor and read the full report here. Edited and produced by Senior Deputy Editor Natalie Krebs. Hosted by Editor-in-Chief Alex Robinson. Music composed and performed by Tyler Schwartz.

Tragedy struck on Reelfoot Lake, and is a reminder of the underlying problems regarding duck hunting on public land. Aurora tells the haunting story of a loving mother vanished from her family home in an affluent neighborhood in Chula Vista, California in early January. Maya Millete was last seen in her home by her family, when she allegedly locked herself inside a downstairs bedroom after an argument with her husband. When they finally unlocked the door a day later, she was gone. Officially, we are just gobsmacked by the mystery of it all, and we have no idea what could have possibly happened to Maya. On Speculation Corner, we have a few ideas. What was that classic idiom? Oh yes, It's always the husband. Not sure what brought that to mind. Angelina dug in to duck culture, complete with a study of an excellent article of Field & Stream magazine, and a stint on the Duck Hunter's Refuge forum. What on earth would inspire her to do such a thing? After a double homicide on Reelfoot Lake in northwestern Tennessee led to a nearly week-long manhunt of a so-called armed and dangerous 70-year-old duck hunting fugitive, who himself wound up dead in the water when investigators finally located him... We began to suspect there's some drama in the duck hunt! Turns out the duck hunting community is rife with machismo and even violent altercations. Shocking. In this episode of Memphis Type History: The Podcast, Rebecca reveals to Caitlin her recent paranoia of the New Madrid fault line and the seriousness of "the big one" for Memphis should it ever occur. But there's good new! Well... at least for those over 36 years old. So what is the New Madrid Fault Line? Wikipedia says it's the 150-mile (240 km) long seismic zone, which extends into five states. It stretches southward from Cairo, IL; through Hayti, Caruthersille and New Madrid, MO; through Blytheville into Marked Tree in AR. It also covers a part of West Tennesse, near Reelfoot Lake, extending southeast into Dyersburg. That's a pretty big stretch of land. The History of New Madrid Seismic Zone (NMSZ) Earthquakes The first known written record of an earthquake felt in the NMSZ was from a French missionary traveling up the Mississippi with a party of explorers. It happened at 1 p.m. on Christmas Day in 1699 at a site near the present-day location of Memphis. However, most famous was a series of 3 earthquakes between 1811-12. The first earthquake was recorded at 2:15 am in Northeast Arkansas. It caused only slight damage to man-made structures, mostly because it wasn’t greatly populated. Memphis (before it was Memphis) was shaken at a Mercalli Intensity scale of level nine. Little Prairie, MO was destroyed by soil liquefaction, trees were knocked down and riverbanks collapsed. Uplifts of the ground on the riverbed and large waves made the Mississippi river look like it was flowing upstream. Sand bars and points of islands gave way. A steamboat crew that was anchored overnight along a Mississippi River island said they awoke to find the island had disappeared below the water. Landslides covered an area of 78,000 - 129,000 square kilometers, extending from Cairo, Illinois, to Memphis, Tennessee, and from Crowley's Ridge in northeastern Arkansas to Chickasaw Bluffs, Tennessee. This event shook windows and furniture in Washington, D.C., rang bells in Richmond, Virginia, shook houses in Charleston, South Carolina, and knocked plaster off of houses in Columbia, South Carolina. Observers in Herculaneum, Missouri said it had a duration of 10-12 minutes. After all this, only one life was lost in falling buildings. The first and largest aftershock happened that same morning at around 7:15am. It came to be known as the “Dawn” Aftershock. The second earthquake, on January 23, is believed to be the smallest of the three main shocks and also believed by some that the epicenter was in southern Illinois. That raises concern because if that is true, then that would mean and extended section of the fault exists. The third earthquake, on February 7, happened in Missouri and it was the largest of the series. It destroyed the town of New Madrid, it damaged many houses in St. Louis. It caused general ground warping, ejections, fissuring, severe landslides, and caving of stream banks. Uplift along the fault created temporary waterfalls on the Mississippi River and caused the formation of Reelfoot Lake. NMSZ Fun Facts: (because we try to make light of dark topics) • There’s a New Madrid Historical Museum in the Missouri boot heel. There you can watch a VHS tape they play on loop, called “The Night the Earth went Crazy.” • In 1990, there was an earthquake hype. A prophecy had just been made by a self-proclaimed climatologist named Iben Browning, who falsely claimed to have predicted the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake in California the year before. He predicted that a magnitude 7 earthquake would strike New Madrid on December 3, 1990. The prediction had no scientific legitimacy but it was widely reported in the national media, which promoted fear, anxiety, and hysteria among residents of the Mississippi Valley. • In Memphis, the city recently spent $25 million to prevent the pyramid from being swallowed. • AutoZone’s corporate headquarters also stands ready for some massive shakes. It’s propped up on top of giant shock absorbers. • The nearby Memphis VA is another safe spot. The city spent $64 million dollars removing nine floors of the hospital to reduce the risk of collapse in a catastrophic earthquake. And if you would like more hope, we talk about Seth Stein, a seismologist and professor at Northwestern who doesn’t think we should be worried about the New Madrid. Rebecca talks about his theory on the episode which sounds pretty solid. But for all you Eeyores and Debbie Downers, Rebecca also talks about how scientist say Seth's scenario is a low probability scenario and that the NMSZ is still hazardous. They estimate that over the next 50 years, the probability of a magnitude 6 or larger quake is between 25 to 40 percent. In short, if you are 36 years old or younger, there is a good chance you will experience an earthquake in the Mid-South that measures higher than a 6.

Today, Cass and Bob present a double feature. We converse with 2 separate guests: one who appears under a pseudonym, we call him Yert, the second using her real name, Ashley Hall. They both live locally here in the Nashville area and share their story of leaving their Christian faith. Yert is a 37 year old man was raised Christian. Ten years ago, he was in a tragic boating accident on Reelfoot Lake in Tennessee in which he suffered severe head trauma and was in a coma for 32 days. When he awoke, he recognized his mother’s face, he remembered the English language, but he had to learn how to walk and talk again. He also had to learn his religion again and this time, it didn’t make any sense. With this second chance on life, he viewed things more skeptically and eventually renounced his faith. Our second guest, Ashley, has a Masters in social work and councils with preteens. She herself was diagnosed with autism at age 12. She testifies that her autism contributed to her need for things to make sense which at the time included Christianity, but as she matured she found her childhood faith to be counterfactual. She’s grateful that her faith contributed to her desire to help others. Now she continues to do so without it. We taped these conversations on August 6th, and August 13th, 2016.
