As America celebrates its 250th anniversary, artists across the country are helping us see the nation's story through fresh eyes. Few do it with the authenticity and attention to detail of David Wright. In this episode, Wright, one of America's premier historical artists, along with Discovery Park of America's senior director of exhibits and collections take listeners on a guided tour of Discovery Park's newest Southern Artist Showcase, "Brushstrokes of a Young Nation: The Art of David Wright." The exhibition features Wright's remarkable paintings of the American frontier, bringing to life the explorers, settlers, Native Americans and pivotal moments that shaped a young nation. David shares the stories behind many of his favorite works, explains why historical accuracy is at the heart of everything he paints, and reveals how years of research, living history and firsthand experiences help him recreate the past with extraordinary authenticity. He also discusses the highlights of his decades-long career, the evolution of his artistic style, and why preserving history through art matters as much today as ever. Whether you're a museum lover, an art enthusiast, a history buff or simply someone who enjoys hearing from people who have dedicated their lives to mastering their craft, this episode offers a fascinating look inside the mind of an artist who doesn't just paint history—he helps us experience it. This project is funded in part by a Tennessee America 250 grant from the Tennessee Commission for the United States Semiquincentennial. Through this statewide initiative, Tennessee communities are working together to honor the state's role in shaping the nation's history and future. "Brushstrokes of a Young Nation: The Art of David Wright” will be on display at Discovery Park through Feb. 1, 2027.

Can a devastating injury actually be a gateway to a new life? Cheri Carandanis' life story reads like two different books. For 25 years, Cheri lived in the high-stakes world of nursing, including a tour as a US Air Force critical care flight nurse during the height of the Iraq War. She was a self-proclaimed "Type A" professional who lived for the adrenaline of saving lives at 30,000 feet. Then, the world went dark. After suffering two traumatic brain injuries in six months, the cognitive skills Cheri relied on to survive vanished. Forced to abandon the only career she ever knew, she stumbled upon an unlikely lifeline: abstract art. In this episode, we unpack: The "Ungraceful Pivot": Why Cheri describes her career change not as a choice, but as "getting knocked flat" and rebuilding from the rubble. The Science of Healing: How shifting from the damaged "logical" left brain to the "creative" right brain became a literal survival mechanism. Art as a Second Language: How a woman who couldn't draw a stick figure became a professional painter by using color and texture to process trauma. Finding Presence: The powerful lesson of staying in the "now" when you can no longer rely on who you were yesterday. Cheri Carandanis, an abstract painter and former Air Force critical care nurse, shared her journey from pre-med studies to nursing, driven by her desire to balance career and family. She transitioned to the military, specializing in ICU and CCAT teams, and served in Afghanistan post-9/11. After separating from the military, she pursued hospice nursing and earned a master's degree in nursing. In 2019, she suffered two brain injuries, leading to cognitive and vestibular issues, forcing her to retire her nursing license. Through functional neurology and alternative therapies, she recovered significantly, emphasizing the importance of creativity and mindfulness in healing. For the transcript and full story go to: https://www.drmanonbolliger.com/cheri-carandanis Highlights from today's episode include: When I paint, I don't have a brain injury." – Abstract art and flow state became a powerful part of her neurological and emotional healing after two brain injuries. "If you've seen one healing, you've seen one healing." – Every healing journey is unique, and creativity, intuition, and somatic work can open paths that conventional medicine alone often can't. "Nothing's really broken; it's just not communicating how it should." – The body often needs a reset, not a label, and approaches like Bowen and other body-centered work help "reboot" the nervous system so healing can happen. ABOUT CHERI CARANDANIS: Cheri Carandanis is an abstract painter, mixed media artist, and former Air Force Critical Care nurse who knows a thing or two about surviving what she never saw coming. After a traumatic brain injury ended her 25-year nursing career, she turned to art…not as a hobby, but as a lifeline. Now based in Portland, Oregon, Cheri creates raw, emotionally layered work that invites connection and contemplation. Her paintings don't try to explain everything—instead, they hold space for what's been broken, unraveled, and rebuilt. Through texture, color, and bold mark-making, she explores themes of healing, resilience, and the beauty that often shows up after the fall. Her story is one of reinvention, grit, and choosing creativity when everything else falls away. Core purpose/passion: My core purpose is to create space for truth, the kind that lives in the body, not just the story. I'm passionate about art as a place where people can slow down, feel what they've been avoiding, and come back to themselves without being fixed or explained. I care about honest healing, not performative healing, and about beauty that holds weight, not escape. My work invites presence, courage, and staying with what's real. What's next for Discovery Park of America? In this special Reelfoot Forward episode, CEO Scott Williams sits down with senior collections and exhibits director Jennifer Wildes and manager of marketing and PR Zac Willis for a look at what's ahead in 2026 at the museum and park. The conversation offers a behind-the-scenes preview of upcoming exhibits, major events and cultural celebrations, including plans tied to America's 250th anniversary, new permanent exhibitions, expanded educational programming and returning events that have become regional traditions. Listeners will hear how Discovery Park selects exhibits, balances popular demand with mission-driven storytelling and plans year-round experiences for children and adults. As Discovery Park commemorates the 230th anniversary of Tennessee's statehood and the national America 250 celebration, several new exhibits will open next year. The museum will host "Home, Heart, Heritage: Quilt Exhibition Celebrating Black History," a traveling exhibition from Monthaven Arts and Cultural Center that features five double-sided quilts celebrating Black American contributions to Tennessee and the nation. Listeners will also learn more about "Brushstrokes of a Young Nation: The Art of David Wright," which will be on display in the Southern Artist Showcase Gallery. The exhibition will include prints by celebrated Tennessee artist David Wright, whose paintings of early settlers, frontier life and America's expansion offer a vivid visual journey through the nation's formative years. Another major highlight of Discovery Park's Tennessee America 250 programming discussed in the episode is the Celebrating 250 Years of Independence event July 3–4, 2026. On Friday, July 3, country music artist Mo Pitney will headline a free outdoor concert as part of Discovery Park's Rhythm on the Rails series. Whether you're a longtime member, a first-time visitor or simply curious about how a regional museum plans for the future, this episode offers a candid, informative look at how Discovery Park continues to evolve while staying rooted in the stories of West Tennessee and the Reelfoot Lake region. This episode is sponsored by Main Street Union City.
Ah, there you are, my dear. Unknown Broadcast arrives with old-time radio horror stories, classic OTR chills, and the kind of radio suspense that leans close enough to fog the glass. Tonight, six shadows take attendance:
In this episode of Crazy Wisdom, I, Stewart Alsop, sit down with Argentine artist Mathilda Martin to explore the intimate connection between creativity, flow, and authenticity—from how swimming mirrors painting, to why art can heal, and what makes human-made art irreplaceable in the age of AI. We also touch on Argentina's vibrant art scene, the shift in the art world after COVID, and the fine line between commercial and soulful creation. You can find Mathilda's work on Instagram at @arte_mathilda.Check out this GPT we trained on the conversationTimestamps00:00 – Mathilda Martin joins Stewart Alsop to talk about art, creativity, and her upcoming exhibitions in Miami and Uruguay.05:00 – She shares how swimming connects to painting, describing water as calm, presence, and a source of flow and meditation.10:00 – They discuss art as therapy, childhood creativity, and overcoming fear by simply starting to create.15:00 – Mathilda reflects on her love for Van Gogh and feeling as the essence of authentic art, contrasting it with the coldness of AI.20:00 – The conversation turns to the value of human-made art and whether galleries can tell the difference between AI and real artists.25:00 – They explore Argentine authenticity, “chantas,” and what makes Argentina both chaotic and deeply real.30:00 – Mathilda talks about solidarity, community, and daily life in Buenos Aires amid political and economic instability.35:00 – She highlights Argentine muralists and how collaboration and scale transform artistic expression.40:00 – The pair discuss the commercialization of art, the “factory artist,” and staying true to feeling over fame.45:00 – Mathilda explains how COVID reshaped the art world, empowering independent artists to exhibit without galleries.50:00 – They end with art markets in Argentina vs. the U.S., her gallery in New York, and upcoming shows at Spectrum Miami and Punta del Este.Key InsightsArt and Water Share the Same Flow: Mathilda Martin reveals how swimming and painting both bring her into a meditative state she calls “the pause.” In the water, she feels the same stillness she experiences while painting — a total immersion in the present moment where the outside world disappears.Art Is a Form of Healing: Mathilda emphasizes that art is not just expression but medicine. She references the World Health Organization's recognition that creativity benefits mental and physical health, describing painting as a space of emotional regulation and clarity.Human-Made Art Has Soul, AI Doesn't: One of the episode's most thought-provoking moments comes when Mathilda contrasts the warmth of human-made art with the cold precision of AI. She believes that while AI can replicate technique, it can't replicate feeling — and that collectors will always value art infused with human emotion.Authenticity Defines Argentine Culture: Mathilda paints a vivid picture of Argentina as a land of contradictions — full of chaos, charm, and honesty. Argentines, she says, are “authentic, sometimes too direct,” a quality that shapes both their relationships and their art.COVID-19 Changed the Art World Forever: The pandemic disrupted the old gallery system and gave artists freedom to organize their own exhibitions. For Mathilda, this shift created independence, even if it also demanded new entrepreneurial skills.Commercial Success vs. Soulful Creation: Mathilda critiques “factory artists” who mass-produce work for fame or profit, contrasting them with artists who create from genuine emotion. The real challenge, she says, is maintaining authenticity in a system that rewards volume over vulnerability.Art as Connection and Presence: Beyond skill or aesthetics, Mathilda believes true art is about human connection — between artist, viewer, and the moment of creation itself. Whether painting, swimming, or teaching workshops, she views art as an ongoing conversation with life's deeper flow.

Study Passage: Exodus 2:1-10Now a man from the house of Levi went and took as his wife a Levite woman. 2 The woman conceived and bore a son, and when she saw that he was a fine child, she hid him three months. 3 When she could hide him no longer, she took for him a basket made of bulrushes and daubed it with bitumen and pitch. She put the child in it and placed it among the reeds by the river bank. 4 And his sister stood at a distance to know what would be done to him. 5 Now the daughter of Pharaoh came down to bathe at the river, while her young women walked beside the river. She saw the basket among the reeds and sent her servant woman, and she took it. 6 When she opened it, she saw the child, and behold, the baby was crying. She took pity on him and said, “This is one of the Hebrews' children.” 7 Then his sister said to Pharaoh's daughter, “Shall I go and call you a nurse from the Hebrew women to nurse the child for you?” 8 And Pharaoh's daughter said to her, “Go.” So the girl went and called the child's mother. 9 And Pharaoh's daughter said to her, “Take this child away and nurse him for me, and I will give you your wages.” So the woman took the child and nursed him. 10 When the child grew older, she brought him to Pharaoh's daughter, and he became her son. She named him Moses, “Because,” she said, “I drew him out of the water."
Podcast Notes Episode 478 Brushstrokes & Breakthroughs with Mark Ross Hosts: Brian Miller, PCC Guest: Mark Ross Date: August 14th, 2025 In this episode, Brian Miller talks with Mark Ross — a coach, artist, and founder of Next Thing Group — about the parallels between painting and coaching, the value of curiosity, and the journey of navigating career transitions. Mark shares how art serves as a creative escape and a process of discovery, while coaching provides a similar space for exploration and growth. He recounts how burnout in his former career led him to seek coaching, eventually becoming a coach himself, and emphasizes the power of intentional relationships and openness to new opportunities. Key Highlights: Mark's art process mirrors coaching — both involve starting without knowing the exact outcome and staying curious throughout. Painting serves as a form of mental reset, drawing Mark into a world of focus, experimentation, and discovery. Mark's transition into coaching began during a period of burnout, sparked by guidance from influential mentors like Dan Miller. The International Coaching Federation's (ICF) competencies gave Mark a clear framework to assess and grow his coaching skills. Relationships and intentional conversations have been the driving force behind Mark's personal and professional growth. Takeaways: Creativity and coaching both thrive in environments of openness, exploration, and adaptability. Burnout can serve as a catalyst for reinvention when paired with intentional action and mentorship. Structured professional standards, like those from ICF, can provide valuable benchmarks for skill development. Building genuine relationships through curiosity-driven conversations can open unexpected doors and opportunities. Following the violent attacks on October 7th that devastated communities across Israel — including women living on a kibbutz — Rakefet shares how intuitive art journaling and Kabbalistic wisdom can serve as profound tools for emotional and spiritual healing. Together, she and Rabbi Wildes discuss the intersection of Jewish mysticism, art therapy, and resilience, uncovering how artistic expression can help survivors reclaim their voice, process trauma, and reconnect to the divine.
In this episode, we discussed Sol Lewitt's wall art. Enjoy!

In this episode of Reading With Your Kids our host Jed Doherty sits down with author / illustrator Angie Kang to celeebrate her debut Picture Book Our Lake. Imagine a picture book that tackles big feelings in the most beautiful way possible. Angie Kang, who's super talented and has this incredible art background, created a story about two brothers dealing with losing their dad. But here's the cool part - it's not sad in a heavy way, it's actually kind of hopeful. The whole book started as a random poem Kang wrote after reflecting on a painting. Her husband was like, "Hey, this could be an awesome kids' book!" And boom - "Our Lake" was born. The illustrations? They're seriously gorgeous. We're talking museum-quality artwork that'll make you want to stare at each page. What's really special is how Kang tells the story. She uses barely any words, letting the pictures do most of the talking. There's even this cute little hidden red bird that represents the dad. It's like a secret message in the artwork that kids will love hunting for. The book isn't just about sadness - it's about memories, love, and how families stick together. Kang wants kids to know it's totally okay to miss someone and remember them in happy ways. She's created something that helps kids understand big emotions without feeling overwhelmed. If you're looking for a children's book that's way more than just another story, "Our Lake" is totally your jam. It's beautiful, meaningful, and might just become that special book your kids ask to read over and over again. Trust me, this book is something special - Angie Kang is definitely an author to watch! David shares how music, particularly Miles Davis' Kind of Blue, inspires his work, and how his personal studio practice reflects Zen-like spontaneity and presence. Listeners will also learn about the origin of his “House of Pingting” Instagram name, rooted in spirituality, radio storytelling, and a touch of whimsy. This episode delves into the solitude of the artistic life, overcoming self-doubt, and the importance of embracing the process over results—resonating with creatives and seekers alike. Today we are breaking down the paint giant Sherwin-Williams. Founded in 1866, Sherwin Williams is a great example of a company where everyday consumers might not appreciate just how great of a business and stock this has been. Over the last 20 years, Sherwin has compounded earnings at 14% per year. And over those 20 years, the stock has returned 26x your investment. And that's compared to the S&P at 5x your investment. This has been an incredible quiet compounder. My guest today is Todd Bassnight, director of equity research at Aureus Asset Management. We discuss the business's vertically integrated model, the focus on a particular customer base, a management team that's been thoughtful about capital allocation, and some of its big deals historically.
