This week on Critical Arcade, Dave and Nick pack their best magical brushes and step into the hauntingly beautiful, surreal nightmare that is Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. In a world where death comes not from war or plague, but from a woman with a paintbrush and a god complex, they join the 33rd Expedition—one of humanity's last desperate hopes to break a deadly cycle. Every year, the Paintress awakens and paints a number onto the monolith. Everyone of that age is instantly erased from existence, memories and all.As they traverse crumbling cities frozen in time, twisted dreamscapes, and melancholic ruins of civilizations of old, Dave tries to keep up with the fast-paced, reflex-based combat while muttering “this is turn-based?!” every few minutes. Meanwhile, Nick gets distracted mid-battle by the fact that every enemy looks like a tragic French oil painting that just came to life and wants to kill you. With the clock ticking and only one year left before humanity is fully erased, our duo must master the art of dodging, parrying, and emotionally processing existential horror in real time. In this episode of Reading With Your Kids our host Jed Doherty sits down with author / illustrator Angie Kang to celeebrate her debut Picture Book Our Lake. Imagine a picture book that tackles big feelings in the most beautiful way possible. Angie Kang, who's super talented and has this incredible art background, created a story about two brothers dealing with losing their dad. But here's the cool part - it's not sad in a heavy way, it's actually kind of hopeful. The whole book started as a random poem Kang wrote after reflecting on a painting. Her husband was like, "Hey, this could be an awesome kids' book!" And boom - "Our Lake" was born. The illustrations? They're seriously gorgeous. We're talking museum-quality artwork that'll make you want to stare at each page. What's really special is how Kang tells the story. She uses barely any words, letting the pictures do most of the talking. There's even this cute little hidden red bird that represents the dad. It's like a secret message in the artwork that kids will love hunting for. The book isn't just about sadness - it's about memories, love, and how families stick together. Kang wants kids to know it's totally okay to miss someone and remember them in happy ways. She's created something that helps kids understand big emotions without feeling overwhelmed. If you're looking for a children's book that's way more than just another story, "Our Lake" is totally your jam. It's beautiful, meaningful, and might just become that special book your kids ask to read over and over again. Trust me, this book is something special - Angie Kang is definitely an author to watch! Today we are breaking down the paint giant Sherwin-Williams. Founded in 1866, Sherwin Williams is a great example of a company where everyday consumers might not appreciate just how great of a business and stock this has been. Over the last 20 years, Sherwin has compounded earnings at 14% per year. And over those 20 years, the stock has returned 26x your investment. And that's compared to the S&P at 5x your investment. This has been an incredible quiet compounder. My guest today is Todd Bassnight, director of equity research at Aureus Asset Management. We discuss the business's vertically integrated model, the focus on a particular customer base, a management team that's been thoughtful about capital allocation, and some of its big deals historically. Modernism is one of the most important art movements in Catalonia, one that played a crucial role in shaping the cultural identity of Catalonia at the turn of the 20th century. The movement drew clear inspiration from parallel artistic trends throughout Europe, known by different names such as Art Nouveau, Jugendstil, or Modern Style. While the world of painters was very male-dominated, with Catalans Ramon Casas and Santiago Rusiñol responsible for bringing the movement from Paris to Catalonia, a few women also made their mark on the movement in Catalonia, namely Lluïsa Vidal. Emma Monrós Rosell joins Lea Beliaeva Bander to delve into this pivotal art movement, exploring some of its defining characteristics and motifs, as well as some of its most influential artists. We hear from art historian Elina Norandi, who sheds light on the notable absence of women in this movement, and we share some recommendations for contemporary female Catalan artists to watch. This week's Catalan phrase is “Una flor no fa estiu, ni dues primavera,” which translates as ”One swallow does not make a summer.” Get in touch with the podcast team: fillingthesink@acn.cat

A Couple of Multiples: The Reality of Living with Dissociative Identity Disorder
Art is one of the many healing modalities used for trauma processing. Megs from Brushstrokes & Imagination helps us to understand how having DID influences her art and creative processes. Megs is an incredible self-taught artist with minimal formal training. Artworks was one of their earliest escapes. They have continued to cultivate and express themselves since childhood. They are inspired by nature, and the bold dash of color. They were also very influenced by emotion and the unseen challenges of their mental health. They began by studying their own childhood photos. While looking at the photographs, they are reminded of the location the photo was originally taken. They're reminded of the smells & voices echoing in their mind. As they begin to paint, they're processing the feelings that emerge. In the photos they see the younger versions of themselves and how they were taught to feel versus how they truly felt. They illuminate the tiniest of details & darkness without light. As they're painting from these photos they are able to rewrite the narrative. They are able to reconnect with all parts of themselves.@Brushstrokes_Imagination@acoupleofmultiples@note_to_selves@seidi_gardensystemacoupleofmultiples.comSend us a Text Message.

Gajin Fujita is a graffiti artist whose work transcends boundaries and seamlessly blends the rich tapestry of Japanese tradition with the vibrant energy of Western urban culture. In this episode, Fujita talks about his early days as a graffiti artist in tagging crews like KGB and KIIS and his current status as a major star in LA's downtown art scene. He also shares how he blends Japanese techniques and symbols with Western urban pop culture to create visually contrasting masterpieces that transcend space and time. Born in 1972, Gajin Fujita is the son of Japanese parents – a fine art painter father and art conservator mother – who raised him and his brothers in Boyle Heights, a historic immigrant neighborhood just east of Downtown Los Angeles and the L.A. River. As a teenager, Fujita became fascinated with graffiti, joining the tagging crews KGB (Kidz Gone Bad) and KIIS (Kill to Succeed). Through graffiti, Fujita followed his own path towards fine art and received his BA from Otis College of Art & Design, Los Angeles, and his MFA from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, where he found mentorship under art critic Dave Hickey. Reverence for Japanese art history and pride for his identity as an L.A. native assert equal importance in Fujita's work. Lauded by Christopher Knight of the Los Angeles Times as “the most important 21st-century iteration of graffiti's influence on art,” Fujita's paintings incorporate graffiti language, traditional iconography drawn from Edo-period woodblock prints, and symbols of West Coast culture.
