Tyrone Walker entered the American prison system at the age of 19. In this candid conversation he describes where he came from, what it was like entering prison and the benefit he gained from the wisdom of a particular older peer. After serving nearly 25 years in prison, Tyrone earned a certificate in business and entrepreneurship through the Georgetown Pivot Program. His Pivot Program internship with the Justice Policy Institute (JPI) led to a full-time position, in which he used his lived experience and subject matter expertise to effect policy changes. There, Tyrone spent two years advocating for sentencing reform and managing JPI's projects around D.C's Incarceration Reduction Amendment Act (IRAA) and Second Chance Amendment Act. As Director of Reentry Services with the Prisons and Justice Initiative, he supports students with their reentry needs both before and after release. He believes that helping our men and women while they are still on the inside is the most effective way to bridge the gap towards a successful reentry. When he is not working, he is taking classes online to earn his bachelor's degree in political science.
How do we address both the needs of children and their incarcerated parents? How do we keep parents from recidivating? What happens to children when their parents fall back into the system? Recent studies show that approximately 5 million children (or 1 in 14) have a parent who has experienced incarceration. And the number is more staggering for 1 in 8 economically disadvantaged children and 1 in 9 African American children. These children feel both a stigma of having an incarcerated parent and they miss their parent. They need extra support to navigate their education pathways and their social emotional experiences. But, what about the incarcerated parent? What programs or services can they turn to help them become participating parents in their children's education? One place incarcerated parents can go is to the Office of Reentry Services. We have a conversation with Chad Martens the Program Manager at the Office of Reentry Services in Santa Clara County, CA. We get Chad's personal perspectives on the “one-stop-shop” approach to providing reentry services for clients on probation. And through our conversation we discuss solutions based approaches to changing the recidivism rate through supportive reentry programs. Opportunity in America - Events by the Aspen Institute Economic Opportunities Program
As opportunity youth – the 4.6 million young people ages 16-24 who are neither in school nor working – continue to struggle to connect to the economy, entrepreneurship programs may offer a chance to learn the skills and mindset needed to thrive in today's economy. How do we create entrepreneurship programs tailored to the strengths and the circumstances of opportunity youth? Through the Youth Entrepreneurship Fund (YEF), three communities across the country have launched programs to explore entrepreneurship as a pathway to economic self-determination and wealth-building in low-income communities. The programs take a collaborative approach that brings together entrepreneurship education with wraparound supports and additional services from partners that facilitate access to key elements of the entrepreneurship ecosystem in these communities – including mentorship, business pitch competitions and seed funding, accelerators and incubators, hands-on workplace experience, and internships. Learn more about the work of YEF by reading our paper, "Creating Entrepreneurship Pathways for Opportunity Youth: Early Experiences from the Youth Entrepreneurship Fund Grantees," co-written by AIFCS and BOI. This event features two panels, one with leaders from the programs and a second with young adult entrepreneurs from these communities. The conversations will explore emerging learnings from the YEF implementation, including strategies for adapting entrepreneurship curriculum to the unique strengths and needs of opportunity youth; how projects were designed with an equity lens; and strategies for engaging youth voice in the design and implementation of the collaboratives. Our guests include Joyce Klein (Director, Business Ownership Initiative, The Aspen Institute Economic Opportunities Program), Yelena Nemoy (Senior Program Manager, Aspen Institute Forum for Community Solutions), Ruth Barajas-Cardona (Director of Workforce, Education and Reentry Services, Bay Area Community Resources), Michelle Carrillo (Initiative Director, Building Healthy Communities, Del Norte and Tribal Lands, Wild Rivers Community Foundation), Dornella Harvey (Project Manager, Year-Round, Philadelphia Youth Network), and Mali Linton (Young Adult Entrepreneur, Bay Area Community Resources). The Aspen Institute Forum for Community Solutions promotes collaborative, community-based efforts that build the power and influence of those with the least access to opportunity, and support communities to come together to expand mobility, eliminate systemic barriers, and create their own solutions to their most pressing challenges. Learn more at aspencommunitysolutions.org. The Business Ownership Initiative works to build understanding and strengthen the role of business ownership as an economic opportunity strategy. BOI is an initiative of the Economic Opportunities Program. Learn more at as.pn/boi.
