Welcome to ReKnew, A podcast based on Romans 12 where we discuss big ideas, not just to know information about Jesus but to be transformed by him. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect. (Romans 12:2) On this podcast we focus on Jesus and being transformed by renewing our minds, conforming to the image of Christ not to the image of this world. The goal is not to merely know more information about Jesus in order to increase our Biblical knowledge but to ultimately be more deeply formed by Jesus in our thoughts, words, and actions.

On this episode, Dan Kent joins the conversation. Filmed on location at Woodland Hills Church in Maplewood, Minnesota, Danielle meets Dan for a mini-tour of the church, a renovated K-Mart building, and the two sit down for an intimate conversation about Dan’s latest book: Confident Humility: Becoming Your Full Self without Becoming Full of Yourself. Dan discusses his concept of the ditches; the Ditch of Smallness and the Ditch of Bigness. The conversation leads to an appreciation for the Principle of Proportionality, a theory introduced by Senior Pastor of Woodland Hills and theologian, Dr. Greg Boyd. Dan breaks down his view of the Bad Robot society we are seduced by, how social media impacts our connections, and how we are being programmed to be “numb brains floating gently down algorithmic content streams.” Danielle asks Dan how we can inject more sexuality into sermons. Dan suggests that Seminary courses should offer classes on Money, Power, and Sex. Danielle asks Dan: why criticism is a gift and Dan shares why he believes he doesn’t grow from praise. Daniel Kent (@thatdankent) was born to a 14 year old mother in the humorless tundra of Northern Minnesota. He went to college to figure out if God exists and taught his first college course when he was 25. He wrote his first novel when he was 12 (a nature adventure story, hand-written on 20 sheets of loose-leaf paper and sent off to New York for publication. Unfortunately, the publishing company was "not considering material of this type at this time").Due to a chronic tendency to underestimate the difficulty of a task, combined with a spirit of stubborn determination, Daniel decided to learn programming and created 420fables.com. Realizing he was a lousy programmer, he returned to his love of writing and his first book ("The Training of KX12") has been a surprise hit.He is the editor in chief (and occasional contributor) for Greg Boyd's blog ReKnew.org and is the host of the wildly popular podcast: "Greg Boyd: Apologies & Explanations."
In this energetic conversation, Greg and Preston talk about various hot-button issues from nonviolence to nationalism in the church to Open-Theism (a term Greg doesn’t actually endorse), along with Annihlationism, hopeful Universalism, violence in the Old Testament, hermeneutics of hard passages, and Greg’s favorite less-then-sanctified heavy metal bands.Follow Greg on Twitter @greg_boydHe is pastor at Woodland Hills Church and the website there is www.whchurch.org Greg is President of Reknew www.reknew.org and he has a new book coming out in January called Inspired Imperfection which is published through Fortress Press.Support PrestonSupport Preston by going to patreon.comConnect with PrestonTwitter | @PrestonSprinkleInstagram | @preston.sprinkleCheck out his website prestonsprinkle.comIf you enjoy the podcast, be sure to leave a review.

Dan Kent is an author and theologian with degrees in Psychology and a Master’s in Christian Thought from Bethel Seminary. For 20 years he’s worked in Crisis Mental Health services, he’s also authored 5 books, and is currently the Editor in Chief for Reknew.org and co-host of Greg Boyd’s podcast Greg Boyd: Apologies and Explanations. He’s even owned successful local businesses here in Minneapolis.Dan’s got a brand new book coming out entitled “Confident Humility: Becoming Your Full Self Without Becoming Full of Yourself."I invited Dan on to discuss what we might call "theological psychology" and explore how deeply intertwined one's theology and mental health can be. In particular, we take a look at the theological psychology of pride, shame, and humility, and explore how one's theological and philosophical beliefs about human nature may lead them to either oppress others or to be easily oppressed by others. You can pre-order Dan's new book published by Fortress Press here:https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1506451926/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=thatdankent-20&camp=1789&creative=9325&linkCode=as2&creativeASIN=1506451926&linkId=56ac105e4e1cd8c863099a1d55821f04Connect with Dan Kent on Twitter at: https://twitter.com/thatdankent You can also listen to Dan regularly on Greg Boyd: Apologies & Explanations. When I recorded with Dan Kent for Greg Boyd's Apologies & Explanations, the primary focus they wanted to bring me on for was to discuss my perspective on the meaning-crisis & science/faith issues, but Dan had a bunch of other great questions for me too. Some of them were on the more speculative side of theology including questions about consciousness & this thing called panpsychism, open theism, and other fun stuff. We went for about 2 hours together talking about all this fun and important stuff! So the primary episode we both released last week contained about 45 minutes of my interview, but Dan still thought the other points of discussion were really informative and helpful so he chopped up some of the highlights and put together a bonus episode they shared on Reknew.org.I really enjoyed this discussion and I think some of the topics we covered could be helpful for others processing some of these questions, so I thought I would put it out to share with you.In this episode, I share some of my thoughts on:-Greg Boyd's work -the pros and cons of Charismatic & Pentecostal theology -some brief (and unplanned!) reflections on open theism -politics, war, & following Jesus -consciousness, panpsychism, and "prophetic" dreams -reading Genesis with ancient eyes - and more! As part of our Reknew podcast, Greg has begun to interview various noteworthy kingdom leaders and authors. In this first interview, Greg talks with Keith Giles, author of the recently published Jesus Unbounded, about his new book and an assortment of related kingdom matters. Every knows Greg is seriously challenged when it comes to technology, so it should come as no surprise that his first attempt at recording an interview was not without glitches. Most importantly, the audio on Keith in this interview is intelligible, but a bit muted. We promise that the quality of these interviews will improve as Greg’s technological skills improve, but todays is what it is. Thanks for your understanding and enjoy the interview.
