"I think in many ways the pattern is the least important part of conducting. It's much more about showing what the music should be doing, not beating four. If it were just a matter of keeping time, we could use a flashing red light. That's not what your job is. Your job is to encourage and show the music physically. I believe very strongly that the conducting gesture is nothing more than your vocal process externalized.”Chester L. Alwes holds degrees in music from Hanover College, Union Theological Seminary School of Sacred Music, and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Before joining the University of Illinois faculty in 1982, he taught at the College of Wooster and the University of Rochester/Eastman School of Music. Prior to his retirement in 2011 from the University of Illinois, Dr. Alwes taught graduate courses in choral literature, seminars on the works of J. S Bach and Henry Purcell and graduate and undergraduate conducting. From 1982-2009, he was conductor of the U. of I. Concert Choir, taking over the Women's Glee Club prior to his retirement. In addition, he frequently conducted the University's Oratorio Society, Summer Chorus, and the Illinois Summer Youth Music Senior Chorus. In 1996, he founded the Baroque Artists of Champaign-Urbana (BACH), an ensemble drawn from the University and local community that specialized in music of the 17th and 18th centuries. As a choral conductor, Dr. Alwes was known for his innovative programming, his sensitivity to tone and musical line, and his dedication to the musical growth of his singers. He is the author of A History of Western Choral Music (2 vols., Oxford University Press, 2015-16), Handel's Messiah: the Complete Solo Variants (Roger Dean Music, 2009), the chapter on Choral Music of the Romantic era in the Cambridge Companion to Choral Music, Andre De Quadros, ed. (Cambridge University Press, 2012), articles on choral music and numerous choral compositions and arrangements (70+).To get in touch with Chet, you can find him on Facebook (@calwes) or email him at calwes@illinois.edu.Email choirfampodcast@gmail.com to contact our hosts.Podcast music from Podcast.coPhoto in episode artwork by Trace HudsonSights N Sounds with Allen KigerInterviewing music and racing royalty.Listen on: Apple Podcasts Spotify

Ambassador Cindy Courville joins Mike Shanley to discuss her work as the first Ambassador for the African Union. She talks about what it was like to enter into that role and how she worked with African Leaders to ensure their voices were heard, as well as what it meant to them to have someone assigned to Africa. Ambassador Courville describes the way the relationships have changed throughout different Presidencies and that it is critical to choose our next President based on the needs of other countries. Lastly, Ambassador Courville talks about what someone looking to get started in the development and diplomatic sector should be focused on. Tune in to learn more about the African Union. IN THIS EPISODE: [1:49] What is Ambassador Courville's view on global security? [2:43] What does she see as the interplay between intelligence and development in promoting development outcomes? [5:32] What was Ambassador Courville's experience being the first Ambassador to the African Union and what was her role? [9:25] How have the policies changed since the first implemented policies? [14:28] What did it mean to the African Leaders to have an Ambassador assigned to them? [16:25] Has there been momentum on the foundation of engagement with African nations and leaders under the Biden administration? [19:56] How do the current African leaders see geopolitical options to them in the US, China, and other nations? [24:26] What is Ambassador Courville's insight on good development and the importance of interagency work? [27:25] What is Ambassador Courville's insight to someone that wants to cut development funding or diplomatic funding? [31:53] Ambassador Courville's advice for someone getting started in the development or diplomatic sector. KEY TAKEAWAYS: If we fall or shift to a more authoritarian situation, that is not in the best interest of African countries or developing countries in general. We need to have a democracy and a leadership that is focused on maintaining democracy, not curtailing the rights and freedoms of Americans. The more politically and economically stable we are, the less you have to use other tools, and you only want to use those other tools in the most extreme situations. QUOTES: [21:35] “The Africans have been extremely forgiving and understanding. I would say, extremely democratic in their outlook, so they recognize the dynamics and shifts on a level that the average American just doesn't get. I'm not just talking the leadership of Africa, but the people themselves, and so you can't expect them not to engage.” - Ambassador Cindy Courville [24:33] “If I were writing the policy for USAID today, or for the administration, not just for Africa, but in general, I would say we need to increase the size of USAID. USAID's mission is so huge, but the number of personnel and NGOs are great, but we need more continuity in that process.” - Ambassador Cindy Courville [31:19] “We haven't resolved our civil war issues, women's issues, all of those things that are fundamentally part of a democracy.” - Ambassador Cindy Courville RESOURCES: NSL4A Steering Committee Aid Market Podcast Aid Market Podcast YouTube BIOGRAPHY: Ambassador (retired) Cindy Courville, Ph.D. currently serves on the executive board of the National Security Executives and Professional Association (NSEPA) and as a member of the Steering Committee of the Leadership Council for Women in National Security (LCWINS). Tickets for Mormon Land Live can be found here: givebutter.com/Vl1q3T In September 1993, six Latter-day Saint scholars and activists were disciplined for their critical writings about The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It was an extraordinary confluence of events, one that has echoed down through the decades. The censures had a chilling effect on a generation of would-be Latter-day Saint scholars but within 10 years or so the church felt the impact of the internet, with its widespread distribution and democratization of information. Now, 30 years later, many observers are assessing what happened that month and what its legacy has been in the global faith of 17 million members. In her new book, “The September Six and the Struggle for the Soul of Mormonism,” Sara M. Patterson, a professor of theology and gender studies at Indiana's Hanover College, puts the episode within a much broader, decadeslong cultural and theological debate over the nature of the Utah-based faith and its evolving narrative. In this week's episode, she shares her findings about those past events, how they continue to affect the present, and what they may portend for the future.

Samantha initially uncovered her passion for working with whiskey while completing her senior thesis at Hanover College where she sped up the maturation process by rapidly aging the liquid to mimic a 4-year-old aged whiskey. After graduation, she received her Master's in agriculture (with a focus in food science and management) from Washington State University and landed a position as a Quality Technician at Bulleit Bourbon Distillery. Stephen S. Mills, award-winning author, poet and playwright had, as many of us did, a rather circuitous route to becoming a member of the Goddard community. He grew up in Indiana reading and writing. His first inspiration was the work of Gary Paulsen, writer of Hatchet and other books for young adults. He went to a small liberal arts school in the southeast corner of the state, Hanover College. After graduation, he moved to Tallahassee after being accepted by Florida State's MFA program. As one of a very few queer people in the program, Stephen was often subjected to more personal examinations of his work. Upon earning his masters, he moved to Orlando where he taught at a for profit school. He taught mostly on-line courses for four and half years. Later, he wrote an essay which was published on The Rumpus about his experience. It was also during this time he wrote his first book, He Do the Gay Man in Different Voices, which came out six months before leaving the sunshine state for New York. While working at an HIV outreach program, he was approached about interviewing to become part of the Goddard Faculty. He has now taught at the low-residency MFA program for three semesters and has been wowed by the supportive community of students. Stephen loves being able to mentor so many queer writers. Stephen's writing draws from history and pulp culture. His most recent book, Not Everything Thrown Starts a Revolution, found its inspiration in a “This American Life” episode, which looked at suicide by proxy, a phenomenon in which people would kill a child and confess in order to be executed. The first part of the book is a fictionalized version of a perpetrator/victim. The second half is set in the modern day with more personal poems that look at the criminal justice system. In his current creative work, he's looking at slasher films of the 70's and 80's for queer themes. He explores the connection the queer community has to these movies, especially in the way it allows members of the community to identify with the villains in the way in which they are othered. We will donate to a United Way approved association of their choice for $25. There's an opportunity for a greater donation. Then we also are currently offering between one and three hours of a free assessment, depending on which pillar of opportunity you're looking for, whether it's applications, infrastructure security. We are offering our time and services just to kind of give people a frame of mind whether it's about an insecure incident response plan. Whether it's about an application that they need help with, we're willing to offer that time. James' Advice I had a nice biblical quote that I can't recite from from scratch at this point in time. But it basically alluded to never be complacent when it comes to your personal professional work. There is what you do every day at work and then there's everything you do outside of work. Just don't be complacent. Always be pushing yourself, always drive yourself. But be patient because being impatient can also hinder your drive
In this episode, we are discussing perfectionism and stress in the physical therapy students. Stress and burnout in the PT profession are personal interests of mine. I have done some research and explored how to use ACT in preventing burnout and creating resiliency in physical therapists. We briefly explored this topic of perfectionism in episode 217 with physical therapist Andrea Moore. She is a PT who specializes in treating women in overcoming perfectionism, and the intersection between pain and perfectionism. Perfectionism is often caused by having high standards or having a hypercritical evaluation of oneself. Some doctor or physical therapy students experience increased stress when they go through the rather rigorous academic coursework that we take in physical therapy schools. Yet there is limited research in understanding the intersection between stress and perfectionism in the PT students, what the successful behaviors are that these students have that help them manage this increased stress, especially those who are perfectionists coming into the program. Here to discuss perfectionism and stress in the PT student is Professor Mike Richardson. He is a Clinical Associate Professor in the Doctor of Physical Therapy Program at Hanover College. He is a Doctor of Health Science from the University of Indianapolis. His current research interests include perfectionism and stress among physical therapy students. You will learn all about perfectionism and its prevalence among DPT students, perfectionism's relationship to stress, and why it is important to better understand the relationship between stress and perfectionism. Finally, what can be done? What strategies can you employ if you are a DPT student or a physical therapist yourself who is looking at the impact of stress on your physical as well as mental well-being? Let's meet professor Mike Richardson and learn all about perfectionism and stress in physical therapy students. Love the show? Subscribe, rate, review, and share! Heart by Waymarker is a monthly special about healthcare career journeys. Sarah Rankin currently serves Community Health Network as Network Director of Patient Experience. Committed to making healthcare more understandable and continual improvement, Sarah is a certified Project Management Professional, Lean Six Sigma Black Belt, Master Change Management, and Kata Coach. In her almost nine years at Community Health Network, Sarah has served in roles like Epic Application Analyst and Performance Excellence Consultant, in addition to her current role leading patient experience. Sarah earned her BA in Psychology from Hanover College and MBA in Healthcare Management from WGU. In my research, I found this excerpt from a provider recommendation: “Ambitious, hard-working, and enthusiastic are just a few words to describe Sarah…each day she comes to work with a smile on her face ready to take on numerous challenging projects across our Network.” Sarah's success is no surprise, as you will learn after listening to this conversation. Her appearance as the first guest on Heart by Waymarker is very intentional; patient experience is at the heart of healthcare no matter what career journey we are discussing. I wanted to start these special talks about healthcare careers by taking a holistic and end-to-end view of the healthcare experience. That experience begins well before and continues well after the delivery of medical services. Corry Stewart is the Director of Admissions and Football Co-Defensive Coordinator at Lipscomb Academy, a renowned private, college-prep school in Nashville, Tennessee serving students from pre-k to 12th grade. In his admissions role, Corry leads a team to engage with new and current families involving their enrollment status, the admissions process, and personal experiences. In his football role, Corry serves as the Co-Defensive Coordinator and coaches the defensive secondary. A three-time state champion and five-time state runner-up (including for the 2020 season), Lipscomb Academy's football program identifies itself as a "human development program" masked as a football team. A graduate of Hanover College, where he and I met as teammates on the football team, Corry was a standout student, community member, and multi-sport athlete. Corry was a football, track, and basketball student-athlete and was named All-Conference in both football and track - earning the title of NCAA All-American in football for D3 and Associated Press Little American for D2, NAIA and D3. Additionally, he was awarded the NCAA D3 football statistical champion for interceptions per game. While a student at Hanover College, Corry played a significant role in pursuing and changing the culture and diversity of the college while coordinating efforts with the former president Sue DeWine. After graduation, Corry accepted a contract to play in the German Football League for a year. Upon returning state-side, he played two years of arena football for the Cincinnati Commandos and two years for the Nashville Venom - winning three championships during his tenure with both teams. Corry is a team leader and developer of people in the workplace, on the football field, and in the arena of life. I met Corry as a freshman at Hanover College where he was one year my senior. My memory of Corry during that time and those following years was that he made every new student feel welcome and went out of his way to onboard us into the Hanover community. In many ways, he still does this today for the students and families of Lipscomb Academy. Waymarker, meet my friend Corry Stewart! It’s common to think of corporate values as a concept that has always been around, but Lake Lambert, President of Hanover College in Indiana, is here to educate us and show that this isn’t actually the case. Lake is the author of Spirituality, Inc—a book that examines the history of religion in the American workplace—and he joins Henry, William, and Rusty to share what he’s learned about workplace spirituality from the past and what we might expect for the future. In this episode, you’ll hear from a professional academic. Lake Lambert is clearly an expert on the subject of corporate spirituality and the different forms it has taken over the years. In this episode, you’ll hear him talk about the influence of religion on work, the value of meaning making and creativity in the workplace, chaplaincy, and the theological movements that have shaped the history of the faith and work conversation. As always, we’re looking for the voices that speak to faith driven entrepreneurs—people who intertwine their faith and work in a way that unmistakably reflects the God who made them—and we’re so grateful that Lake joined the show to contribute to this conversation. We hope this episode encourages you on your entrepreneurial journey! In a world with so much pain, suffering, hostility, stress, and anxiety, how is it possible to experience life to the fullest? If you read the news headlines or scroll through social media, we're stuck seeing the worst of humanity on a daily basis. The outlook looks pretty grim, but is there another way? Joining the show today, is author, Brandon Andress. In his new book, Beauty in the Wreckage: Finding Peace in the Age of Outrage, Brandon sets out to give us a different way to look at things. If he’s right, his message is just what we need right now. In the book, Brandon makes the surprising discovery that, even in the heartache, the hostility, the division, the violence, and the oppression, experiencing “life to the fullest,” a life of shalom, is not just possible, it can be our present reality. But in order to discover it, we must learn how to see and live differently—moment by moment—for the transformation of our lives, our families, our relationships, and our communities. Most of us are no stranger to suffering, but it's how we respond to that suffering that has the chance to change us for the better. Brandon shares personal stores about the transformative nature of suffering and the necessity of finding shalom. It's a wonderful soulful chat that you won't want to miss. Come along for the ride as we skewer through life, culture, and spirituality in the face of a changing world. www.SnarkyFaith.com Brandon Andress is the author of three books: Beauty in the Wreckage- Finding Peace in the Age of Outrage(2018) AND THEN THE END WILL COME! In this edition of Fresh Hope for Mental Health, Pastor Brad interviews Pastor Tony Roberts. Pastor Tony Roberts was born and raised in the Hoosier heartland just south of Indianapolis. He grew up worshiping high school basketball and once had the honor of playing in a televised “game of the week.” Tony went to Hanover College. After many detours into sex, drugs, and more folk rock than roll, he wound up at the seminary and became a pastor. It was then that symptoms of depression and mania culminated in a psychotic episode that became pivotal in his life, for better and for worse. After graduating from Hanover, Tony obtained a Master of Divinity degree from Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary. While there, he did ministry assignments at a state hospital for persons with developmental disabilities, as well as at a women’s prison, and inner-city hospital. Tony served two decades as a solo pastor. He then shifted to writing, speaking, and leading small groups. In March of 2014, Tony published his spiritual memoir, Delight in Disorder: Ministry, Madness, Mission. Having served in pastoral ministry and gone mad, it’s now his mission to bridge the gap between faith communities and the mental health world. Tony now live in Columbus, Indiana, with supportive family and faithful friends who keep me honest and encourage me to be who God created him to be. Tony’s greatest earthly delights are my four children and two grandchildren, with one more on the way. “The soul is healed by being with children.” (Fyodor Dostoyevsky) We encourage you to share this podcast with your friends via your social media connections. Madison, Indiana is one amazing porch town, located on the Ohio River smack dab between Cincinnati Ohio and Louisville Kentucky. Dave and I interviewed Trevor Crafton, Executive Director of their Chamber of Commerce, to learn the background of this vibrant and welcoming small Midwest town. Madison IN is a very scenic riverfront town located on the Ohio river between Louisville, KY and Cincinnati, OH. It has been selected as one of the top 15 semifinalist communities in the America's Best Communities competition - the winner to be selected in 2017. The downtown section is comprised of historic building and houses which have very charming porches and architecture. Captivating in appearance, the historic colonial and shotgun homes are postcard worthy. The majority of Madison's downtown area has been designated the largest contiguous National Historic Landmark in the United States—133 blocks of the downtown area. Larger than the historic districts in either Charleston SC or Savannah GA. A cultural arts and music center, its town people embrace festivals, visitors and 21st century technology. The low cost of living, low unemployment rate, walkways and bike paths and nearby Hanover College are but a few of the reasons people enjoy living in Madison. Dave and I thoroughly enjoyed our visit there and we know you will enjoy this podcast we had with lifetime resident and Executive Director of the Chamber, Trevor Crafton. Aaron J Gulyas discusses his latest book, The Chaos Conundrum. In "The Chaos Conundrum," historian Aaron John Gulyas examines how the paranormal has intersected and influenced our culture in myriad ways, from the conspiracy beliefs of William Cooper and Exopolitics to the challenge that the stories of Gray Barker presented to our concept of self and time. He looks at the maelstrom of personalities, agendas, impressions, data, confusion, and contradictions that can be found in the world of the weird, and demonstrates how they have become an integral part of our lives, whether in the form of flying saucers, hauntings, religious revelations, psychic abilities, or dozens of other guises. Gulyas delves into the stories of the people who have attempted to create order out of the chaos. Along the way he recounts his own journey from enthusiastic believer in the "shadow government" and their underground bases to jaded academic skeptic, and then finally to someone who thinks there might just be something to the paranormal after all... but not what we have been led to expect or believe! A teacher, historian, and writer (generally in that order), Gulyas received his BA in History from Hanover College in 1998 and promptly went to work for the state of Indiana assessing disability insurance claims. Wearing out his welcome in the civil service within a year or so, he shifted to the thrilling world of proofreading. Realizing he was only really good at history, he returned to school and was awarded an MA in United States History from Indiana University-Indianapolis in 2003. He then moved into teaching, eventually landing at Mott Community College, where he has taught since 2006. Gulyas's first book, Extraterrestrials and the American Zeitgeist: Contact Tales since the 1950s was published in May 2013 by McFarland Books. His newest book is The Chaos Conundrum, a collection of essays on the paranormal, religion, spirituality, an the atemporal, published by Redstar Books. In Fandom's Shadow, a 50th anniversary retrospective of Doctor Who, Fandom, and its relationship to geography and time, was published in September, 2013 by Deserted Moon Press. He contributed the introduction to Posthuman Blues: Dispatches From a World on the Cusp of Terminal Dissolution, a collection of writings by the late Mac Tonnies edited by Paul Kimball.
