Mix Minus - A Gay / LGBTQ Experience

The fact that both Adam and Daniel are getting old is evident in our first topics. Daniel is becoming a crazy cat lady and discusses stalking of two cats that he and Zach are considering adopting. Adam then reveals his age by talking about his crepy skin and his new beauty routine. Next we talk about AI. Daniel does a comparison of Bard vs ChatGPT and Adam reveals an AI generated clone of Daniel's voice. It's not too bad, but there is definitely room for improvement when it comes to emotion and inflection. We also had contact and news game sections. Finally we did the Test Kitchen, where we talk about things that happened on the same day of the month as this year. Notable items are National Hogie Day, International Tuba Day, and birthdays of Drew and Jonathan Scott, and Jay Leno. Halloween is upon us, and Nate and Mitch are feeling spooky! The boys start things off by discuss wrestling by tying it in to their last weeks discussion. We're tanning specific parts of the body while sounding like Obama. After a few opening bits of banter, we get into the topic at hand: Halloween. Candy, dressing up, trick 'r treating, etc. We cover it all and having the fillings to show for it! Tight five returns with maybe a tweet edition? You be the judge. It also gets completely derailed by a joke not exactly being worded correct. The Goon Tribe t-shirt idea? We got those. After a classic Mitch pee break, we get into talking about a particular librarian we both had. We also talk about a different name for balls by a recalled childhood story from Mitch. The legend of the robot voice comes out to play and finish the episode out.  At the end of the day, it's all love. Look, here we are again! We start our final episode on The Years of Rice and Salt by talking about what's up next for the podcast. Short answer: probably a few standalone episodes on movies and KSR short stories, followed by a deep dive into the forthcoming The Ministry for the Future, followed by our next big project. But first, a short hiatus while we solidify plans and the school year starts to start. We reflect on rebirth and retribution, teaching and learning, and finding yourself in a small community and a large world. We talk about how the characters, K and B especially, attempt to become fully human, locating themselves between the Great Man and Mass Movement models of history. And we discuss the book's fantastic and uncanny elements, and try to keep the melancholy of ending a book at bay. Stay tuned to the end to find out whether or not we recommend this book! There were some extremely funky things happening with the recording this week, so sorry for any extra-weird hiccups in the recording and editing. We are going to use your donations to the show (yes, you can donate to the show via Anchor, but you really don't have to!) to buy Hilary a new microphone, which we hope will banish Robot Voice to hell. The penultimate episode on The Years of Rice and Salt! (I just like saying "penultimate." You've got to seize the opportunity when it presents itself.) In this, one of the longer (the longest?) chapter of YoRaS, Matt and Hilary talk about science and feminism, the aftermath of war, the aesthetics of scent, the division of labor, and history. We talk about different knowledges and forms of knowledge production and the exclusion of certain kinds of people both from that knowledge production and from the acknowledgement that those certain kinds of people in fact engaged in those certain forms of knowledge production for, like, forever. We talk about history and revolution, and human living together, and of course we end up on some profanity-laced tirades about the state of the damn world and these institutions and politicians, and not to mention These Kids Today! Matt has some sage advice for college students that will certainly kill what's left of his academic career; thankfully, no one who would be in a position to hire him will be listening! I mean, we just talk about a lot of stuff! It's a great chapter!
