This mix starts with jazz, an album by Yusuf Lateef which has a nicely worn out sound. Biosphere's wonderful impression of breaking ice quickly enters the scene. As far as worn out and slightly off key sounds go, Denmark's Øjerum is an expert on that. His works are often soothing and slightly disturbing at the same time, as are Roly Porter's, entering the mix around the 7 minute mark. We take a step back then for the second third of the mix, combining IA's “Mater Lacrimosa” with, again, the percussive side of Biosphere. The last third of the mix is a piling of works, as often happens in my radioshow Sensenta on the Dutch Concertzender. IA meets John Coltrane meets Markus Guentner meets the genius of Kaija Saariaho. And finally, since it's polite to introduce oneself, the last notes of “Glacier Looming,” is an impression of the weight of the Franz Josef Glacier in New Zealand, a work using birdsong and semi-modular synthesis. Yusef Lateef “Purple Flower” Biosphere “Skålbrekka” Øjerum “The Forest Is Sleeping With The Trees, Part 1” Roly Porter “Inflation Field” IA “Mater Lacrimosa” Biosphere “Bergsbotn III” John Coltrane “The Drum Thing” Markus Guentner “Magnetar” Kaija Saariaho “Six Japanese Gardens IV” Harrold Roeland “Glacier Looming” --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/soundwavemix/message

Developed in residence at Somerset House Studios, visual artist Sam Williams (https://www.somersethouse.org.uk/residents/sam-williams-roly-porter) and musician Roly Porter (https://www.instagram.com/rolyporter) present Salvage Rhythms, a collaboration resulting in a performance and film drawing on systems of archaeology, mycelial networks, composting and non-human relationships to explore different possibilities of survival and connection. Sam and Roly will present a newly commissioned film Salvage Rhythms at Somerset House Studios in 2020, which collages together sound and movement from their performance of the same title at AGM (https://www.somersethouse.org.uk/whats-on/agm) , with original and found footage; animation and photography to create a dense and decaying compost of human and non-human entanglement. Salvage Rhythms features as part of I Should Be Doing Something Else Right Now (https://www.somersethouse.org.uk/whats-on/gallery-31-i-should-be-doing-something-else-right-now) , the second season at Somerset House Studios' new permanent exhibition space, Gallery 31, from 23 Jan – 31 May 2020. Produced by Femi Oriogun-Williams for Reduced Listening. Commissioned by Somerset House Studios
The fifth volume of our Mixtape series comes by Lost Few, the audio-visual project of Melbourne-based experimental artist David Thomson. For this Mix, he’s prepared a personal journey developing a sense of space and theme that reflect the contexts and emotions he tries and explores with his own work. Lost Few has just published his debut LP Between The Silence (Southern Lights 2019). It showcases ambient techno, disturbed electronics, processed instrumentation & sub-bass experiments, leading the listener to a journey that traverses a world that possesses a sharp, dissonant edge. The album also portrays the artist's relationship with the physical form, which includes sound recordings from the Buchan Caves in Victoria & the Tasmanian wilderness. For this mix, the selection of tracks comes from artists who have influenced Thomson or represent a sound and thematic that he relate to and engage with: "While writing a new body of work I try to limit the music I listen to and separate myself from any external musical influences. I also stopped dj’ing when I started writing this album for that reason. However you will still hear influences come through - for example I used to work at a job that was slowly destroying any creative output - I’d be on the train looking out the window as the sun rose above the roofs of the inner city suburbs with Roly Porter or Puce Mary slamming my ears - a cathartic and ritualistic experience." Tracklist: Lost Few - TMMFHTWNBIV Max Cooper - Hope (Roly Porter Remix) Puce Mary - Red Desert Lost Few - Bound_Many_Eyes_ Ourea - From Chaos Came Erebus Lost Few - Blessed Are The Tears We Forget To Shed My Disco - Forever Sow Discord - VI Lana Del Rabies - Disgrace Noiztatic - Noiztatic - W.A.R I Oake - Lilin Roll The Dice, Alessandro Cortini - Hydra
I’m back from my vacation in Eastern Europe, finally attending Poland’s Unsound Festival, and slowly getting into my routine. What better way to start off than with another gorgeous mix? Today Herd returns to our podcast with another heady mix, featuring many pieces he is inspired by, with numerous appearances by FSOL to create that otherworldly dreamscape which has been haunting me ever since the day I heard Lifeforms. Lots of favorites on here as well, including ASC, Legiac, Roly Porter, and of course, Herd himself. I hope you enjoy this journey with me, and as usual in this case, less words and more music! For full track listing and more information about this mix, please visit headphonecommute.com
