This week, we're having a ball -- scrapping, yelling and mixing it up, loving every minute with this damn crew as we close out Gene HackMarch with a regal induction into the podcast canon. It's 2001's The Royal Tenenbaums, directed by Wes Anderson, co-written by Wes Anderson and Owen Wilson, and starring Gene Hackman, Anjelica Huston, Ben Stiller, Gwyneth Paltrow, Luke Wilson, Owen Wilson, Bill Murray, Danny Glover and the voice of Alec Baldwin. While Anderson launched himself to prominence with Rushmore, Tenenbaums marked the full-throated arrival of a confident new voice in American cinema, and arguably remains his best effort nearly two and a half decades later. Perfectly utilising Hackman's gruff hard-ass patriarcal screen presence, cut by the man's easily over-looked and ofter under-utilised comedic abilities, it's a redemption story for an almost historically bad dad -- a funny, feel-good movie that says it's never too late to make things right. Plus: Hayley's got another theatrical outing to report on as she headed to the cinema to catch Black Bag, while both hosts have food fixations on the brain this week. If you'd like to watch the movie before listening along to our discussion, The Royal Tenenbaums is currently available to stream on Disney+, as well as Crave and Starz north of the border. Other works discussed this week include Presence, Kimi, Ocean's Eleven, Enemy of the State, The Conversation, No Way Out, Dirty Dancing, Step Up, Center Stage, Stranger Than Fiction, Arrested Development, Hard Eight, Sliding Doors, The French Dispatch, The French Connection, Isle of Dogs, The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, The Darjeeling Limited, The Grand Budapest Hotel, Bottle Rocket, Asteroid City and Eastbound and Down, among many more. We don't know when we'll be back or what we'll be watching, as events in Hayley's life are making recording rather difficult over the next few months. But we will return, so don't fret! We just may be going down to a bi-weekly schedule for the next little while until things blow over. And don't worry, it's nothing bad. Updates coming on our social media feeds when we have them, but until then, we'll see you at the movies!!
Please come celebrate our 300th episode with spine number 300! We grapple with our legacy, come to terms with our many failures, reaffirm old friendships, get matching outfits, mourn our losses, go on one last adventure, and have a few laughs. And because it's Wes Anderson, we can't help but fall for yet another flawed father figure. Your humble hosts stumble happily headlong into the world of avant-pop Moroccan folk music! (PATREON EXCLUSIVE)Kathryn has seen more Wes Anderson movies than Melvin, and something about his style was getting to her. Melvin, however, really enjoyed the film.Melvin shares what resonated with him, contrasting it with what he felt The Royal Tenenbaums wasn't able to do a year ago.Steve Zissou is constantly thinking about his future, and is clearly ruminating on his past, and the film takes these things to task as it orients him toward his present. One's legacy is at the forefront of the film, and this is contrasted against nature's beautiful indifference.Kathryn, "...the emotional heart of this movie is definitely Ned."Discussing the ending, and why Melvin loved it so much.Recommendations:And Then We Grew Up: On Creativity, Potential, and the Imperfect Art of Adulthood by Rachel Friedman (2019) (Book)The Peanut Butter Solution (1985) (Movie) Support the showSupport on Patreon for Unique Perks! Twenty years ago on Christmas Day, Wes Anderson released his fourth feature film into the world. The star-studded Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou was not as an immediate hit as some of Anderson's other films but it's one that has aged incredibly well. Bill Murray leads a cast of phenomenal actors such as Owen Wilson, Cate Blanchett, Willem Dafoe, Jeff Goldblum, Anjelica Huston, and many others as the titular Steve Zissou on a quest for both revenge against the rare (and possibly fictional) shark that killed his partner and best friend, and his long lost dignity and relevance as an oceanographer and documentarian. As funny as it is, the movie also is about a man struggling against his mortality and seeking to repair his legacy. It's charming, exciting, funny, and deeply heartfelt. Whether you revisit this as an old favorite or are coming to it for the first time, we hope you enjoy! We are also thrilled to welcome Dan McCoy (The Flop House podcast, The Daily Show with Jon Stewart) to discuss the film with us. Dan is a veteran writer, comedian, podcaster, and movie watcher and it was a wonderful time having him on to talk about one of his favorite films. Issue 44 of the monthly magazine film quiz for the discerning film nerd continues with the Penalty Shootout Film Quiz, the fiendishly complicated and keenly contested test of film trivia prowess. The Adamsons face off to see who will win the quiz question shootout, with a forfeit awaiting the loser in the form of a film they really don't want to see, vindictively selected for them by the winner. This month James (no the other one) will watch Wes Anderson's The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou if he loses, while James (yes that one) will be forced to watch the notorious 2000s film parody Disaster Movie. The score currently stands at 5-0 to James (no the other one) so we all know which way the betting odds are leaning. Double Reel Monthly no 44 is already out to listen to and next week we'll bring you the Features.
Another round of the fiendish Penalty Shootout Film Quiz, where the Adamsons battle it out to see who has the best knowledge of cinematic trivia. The winner gets to force the loser to perform a forfeit and watch a film they're really going to hate. The score is currently 5-0 to James (no the other one) and James (yes that one) to claw his way back into contention. Last month the loser had to watch Uwe Boll's horrific Alone in the Dark. This month, James (no the other one) will have to avoid the film he's successfully avoided for months now - Wes Anderson's The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou. James (yes that one) will have to watch Tommy Wiseau's The Room. Our latest episode Double Reel Monthly is already out now, and the Features will be released on December 2nd.

Yasmin Greene walks me through the artistic process, hurdles and excitement of dominating what many would consider a niche business, and a crowded market. Yasmin runs Fin Pin along with her “partner-in-crime” Jaclyn (interview a few episodes back S3 Episode 11) They combined forces, producing a constant flow of ocean-themed fun (oh, and of course plenty of Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou themed merch to go around!) Probably my favorite part of the interview was her explaining their soft spot for the “underdog” species' (like the Batfish and Blobfish!) and even use a Mola Mola fish as their main logo. If you can turn the Batfish and Horshoe Crab into fun… I think you may have something there. This interview is sure to impress and entertain any ocean, marine or aquatic enthusiast. Yasmin has a Bachelor's degree from the University of Tampa in Marine Biology, a Master's degree from Drexel University in Environmental Science, and an MBA from Florida International University. She loves Manta Rays, cats, frog fish, and churning out puns. Hello everyone and welcome to Some Like It Scott's newest Countdown miniseries: the Wes Anderson Countdown. To honor one of the great still-working indie writer-director auteurs, who's next film ASTEROID CITY comes out later this year, Scott, Scott, and Jay will be watching all 10 of the American filmmakers' works to-date, from his origins with the '90s heist-comedy BOTTLE ROCKET, all the way to his latest feature, 2021's star-studded anthology drama THE FRENCH DISPATCH. Join us each week over the next 10 weeks as we progress through Anderson's full oeuvre in the buildup to ASTEROID CITY! On part 4 of the Anderson Countdown, Scott, Scott, and Jay review Wes Anderson's 2004 adventure comedy-drama, THE LIFE AQUATIC WITH STEVE ZISSOU. Directed by Anderson and co-written with Noah Baumbach in the first of several collaborations between the two, THE LIFE AQUATIC WITH STEVE ZISSOU stars Bill Murray in the titular role, as an eccentric oceanographer-turned-documentarian who is on a quest for revenge against a rare 10-meter-long luminescently spotted "jaguar shark" that devoured his best friend and lead diver, Esteban, on the shoot of his most recent documentary. Zissou is joined on his ship, the Belafonte, by his eclectic crew that includes Eleanor (Anjelica Huston), his estranged wife who serves as Zissou's chief strategist and financial expert; Pelé (Seu George), the vessel's safety expert who also plays the guitar and sings David Bowie songs in Portuguese; and Klaus (Willem Dafoe), a feisty German first-mate, who views Zissou and Esteban as father figures. The Belafonte and "Team Zissou" aren't in total harmony, however, as rifts begin to grow among the crew, and some new chaos is introduced with two new joiners to the crew for the latest expedition: Ned (Owen Wilson), who believes Zissou may be his father, and Jane (Cate Blanchett), a pregnant reporter who has been sent to chronicle Zissou's latest film, that both Zissou and Ned also happen to be attracted to. When the financing for Zissou's final voyage for revenge against the jaguar shark falls through, Ned offers Zissou his inheritance to fund the expedition, leading Eleanor to leave in disgust of Zissou's exploitative behaviors. The tension among the crew only grows deeper as Zissou gives more and more attention to Ned, frustrating Klaus in the process, while also competing with Ned for the affection of Jane. The wacky leftovers of Team Zissou have quite the adventure ahead of them, however, and Zissou is determined to find the jaguar shark that killed his best friend. Who knows, maybe he'll learn some life lessons along the way. The countdown crew give their thoughts on Anderson's fourth film, including its journey to cult status, its more adventurous spin on Anderson's narrative style, and the ensemble cast brought to bear.
Break out your red caps and speedos, this week Time on Screen is tackling The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou. Wes Anderson's follow up to The Royal Tenenbaums was a box office flop and a definite miss with critics when it was released in 2004, but over the years the film's reputation has improved, and it is now considered one of Anderson's most emotionally complex and ambitious projects. Featuring great performances from Bill Murray and a stellar supporting cast that includes Owen Wilson, Cate Blanchett, Willem Dafoe, and others, The Life Aquatic is particularly rewarding on a rewatch, as there are endless sight gags, easter eggs, and new ways to view the arc of the Zissou character. Today's episode features Zach Kazan and his guest Kyle Snarr, making his return to the Time on Screen podcast to talk about not only his favorite Wes Anderson movie, but his favorite movie, period. Not only is The Life Aquatic a fantastic example of Anderson's visual style and the themes he'd go on to explore in similar depth with later films, but it has some great watch spotting, including a fun and affordable diver that Kyle is sporting on this very recording. To stay on top of all new episodes, you can subscribe to The Worn & Wound Podcast — now available on all major platforms including iTunes, Google Play, Stitcher, Soundcloud, Spotify, and more. The prisoner swap that traded Russian arms trafficker Viktor Bout for WNBA star Brittney Griner inspired commentary across the political aisle. It also revealed how long Bout had been on the international bargaining table, for other U.S. citizens in Russian prisons. In the podcast, Bout's lawyer Steve Zissou confirms that former President Donald Trump passed on an opportunity to trade his client for former U.S. Marine Paul Whelan. He also responds to a Twitter post from Donald Trump Jr. calling Bout a "terrorist."Diving deep into the more than decade-old trial of Viktor Bout, the interview explores his reputation as the "Merchant of Death," the sting operation that brought him down, and the sober account of what will become of his arms trade.
