Black Adam is a 2022 American superhero film based on the DC Comics character of the same name. Produced by New Line Cinema, DC Films, Seven Bucks Productions, and FlynnPictureCo., it is a spin-off from Shazam! (2019) and the 11th film in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU). Directed by Jaume Collet-Serra and written by Adam Sztykiel, Rory Haines, and Sohrab Noshirvani, the film stars Dwayne Johnson (who also served as a producer) as the titular character alongside Aldis Hodge, Noah Centineo, Sarah Shahi, Marwan Kenzari, Quintessa Swindell, Bodhi Sabongui, and Pierce Brosnan. Johnson was attached to Shazam! early in development and confirmed to portray the villain Black Adam in September 2014, but the producers later decided to give the character his own film. Sztykiel was hired in October 2017. Collet-Serra joined in June 2019 for a planned release date of December 2021, but this timeline was delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic. Additional casting took place over the next year, including four members of the Justice Society of America (JSA), and the script was rewritten by Haines and Noshirvani. Filming took place from April to August 2021 at Trilith Studios in Atlanta, Georgia, and also in Los Angeles. Black Adam had its world premiere in Mexico City on October 3, 2022, and was theatrically released in the United States on October 21, 2022, by Warner Bros. Pictures. The film received mixed reviews from critics, who praised the performances of Johnson and Brosnan but criticized the screenplay and villain; the action scenes received a polarized response. A sequel is currently in development. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/popcorn-junkies/message

Sohrab Noshirvani & Rory Haines are currently at work on the DCU film Black Adam, starring Dwayne Johnson. The two have been collaborative screenwriters in some form since 2012 when they were paired together at Columbia University's MFA program. In less than a decade, these two have continued to carve out a place for themselves in Hollywood. They never run from a challenging project, and are known for their attention to research in each project. They also gained a Golden Globe for The Mauritanian in 2021. Today on Open Dialogue, they talk with Noel T. Manning II about their process of co-writing; their thoughts of Auteur theory; the process of preparing for the Mauritanian, and they may even share a nugget or two about Black Adam. Sohrab & Rory also explain why Noel is wrong about Benedict Cumberbatch's southern accent. ... All this and more on this episode of Open Dialogue.
On the newest edition of Sean at the Movies, I sat down to chat with the writers of the incredible legal drama, The Mauritanian. Based on the true story of a man who was arrested by American forces in 2002 and held for 14 years at Guantanamo Bay with no charges brought against him, The Mauritanian is a deeply human and intelligent legal drama that pays tribute to the real story of an innocent, persecuted man and the legal wrangling that finally got him out of jail. Also this week, shifting gears to the horror genre, I spoke to the writing and directing team behind the new in theaters horror movie, The Djinn about the remarkable challenge of telling a horror story where the lead character is a mute child left alone in an apartment overnight and menaced by a demonic spirit he summoned himself. This week on Sean at the Movies The Mauritanian with writers Rory Haines and Sohrab Noshirvani and The Djinn with the writing and directing duo, Justin Powell and Michael Charbonier
The Mauritanian is a 2021 legal drama film directed by Kevin Macdonald from a screenplay written by M.B. Traven, Rory Haines, and Sohrab Noshirvani. The film is based on the 2015 memoir Guantánamo Diary by Mohamedou Ould Slahi, a true story of Slahi's experience of being held for fourteen years without charge in the Guantanamo Bay detention camp. The film stars Jodie Foster, Tahar Rahim, Shailene Woodley, and Benedict Cumberbatch. The Mauritanian was released in the United States on February 12, 2021 by STXfilms. In the United Kingdom, where all cinemas were closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the planned theatrical release was cancelled and the film premiered on Amazon Prime Video on April 1, 2021. It received mixed reviews from critics, but the performances of Rahim and Foster were praised. At the 78th Golden Globe Awards the pair were nominated for Best Actor – Motion Picture Drama and Best Supporting Actress – Motion Picture, respectively, with Foster winning. At the 74th British Academy Film Awards the film received five nominations, including Best Film. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/popcorn-junkies/message
