Roy L Hales/Cortes Currents - The Southern Cortes Community Association (SCCA) has partnered with several local sports to build a multi-use sport court beside the Cortes Island Skate Park. The proposed facility would consist of two courts on a 60 foot by 60 feet concrete or asphalt square. It could be used for pickleball, basketball, volleyball, badminton and tennis. According to Cora Moret, Executive Director of the SCCA, there is currently a complete lack of sports courts on Cortes Island. On October 2, she gave an overview of the project in a letter to the Strathcona Regional District. Moret wrote that the Cortes Island Pickleball Society (CIPS) approached the SCCA about the project last year. Pickleball is currently played on a small asphalt area behind the Cortes Island school. The surface is not ideal for court sports and cannot be used during school hours. Since then, the SCCA has been approached by youth and adult basketball groups. In June, the SCCA set up a Pickleball Committee headed by Board member Ruth Barrett. The committee considered various locations and configurations before recommending the area beside the Skateboard Park. Moret wrote, “CIPS has developed a provisional budget for the project and potential sources of revenue to pay for the expected $190,000 project. The major expenses (substrate material and concrete work) will be revised once the site is cleared and contractors can evaluate the work. For revenue, in addition to a potential grant from the SRD Community Works Fund, CIPS members and supporters will donate generously through the Cortes Island Community Foundation and SCCA. In-kind contributions of labour and expertise will be requested from island suppliers and contractors and other funding grants will be sought. The BC Gaming Capital Projects Grant will be applied for in 2025 and may match up to 50% of the total project costs, including documented in-kind contributions.” She also sent the SRD a provisional budget detailing the estimated costs and sources of revenue. The SCCA hopes to obtain a $50,000 grant from the SRD Community Works Fund, which is often referred to as the gas tax. At the SRD Board's October 30 meeting, Regional Director Mark Vonesch moved “that a report on providing $50,000 of community works funding for the building of a multi use sports court on the Southern Cortes Community Associations property be prepared for further consideration by the Electoral Area Services Committee (EASC).” Campbell River Director Susan Sinnott responded, “I just want to hear a little bit more about the staffing requirements and the use of the community works fund with respect to a specified recreational project like this. If staff can give me any idea of how common this is, or if this is traditional use and how that affects the regional development of recreation.” Chief Administrative Officer David Leitch explained, “Recreation in itself is allowable for the community works funds, but there's a number of new rules and complications with non government organizations in terms of ongoing management, operational funds, asset management, land ownership, etc. As well with the new community works fund rules, it cannot replace another piece of infrastructure that the regional district either has or is on its list of infrastructure upgrades. For example, if you have a series of recreation, inner recreation, infrastructure projects that you're not providing gas tax in lieu of a project that competes for it, let's say a non government organization that would be a conflict. So there's a number of new rules with the community works funds that I'm going to say are going to likely complicate this request, but we'll bring back a staff report identifying those challenges.” This is only one of the proposed revenue sources for the proposed multi-use sports court.
From old episodes of Perry Mason on AMI to the 2011 Royal Wedding of Prince William and Kate on CBC to Love On the Spectrum on Netflix. Our latest guest has described it all. This week on Outlook we speak with Ruth Barrett, who attended the London Academy of Music & Dramatic Art, who started out as a performer, in the theatre, as a voiceover artist, but she eventually found her way into the world of doing closed captioning work first and then audio description. She loves English and history and her curiosity, all helpful interests and qualities for a describer to have. We speak with Ruth about how her previous skill set was applied to becoming an audio describer and writer, for Accessible Media Inc. and other networks, which led to her doing this work for live performances at the Stratford Festival which began offering selected audio described shows around 2012. Ruth loves to speak with users of her live theatre audio description and shares how she likes meeting with them after the show and receiving their feedback. With terms like forced naming, Barrett tells us what she's learned about best practices over her years doing this work and how she's loved getting to do more work collaboratively on a team along with the others over at Descriptive Video Works based in BC, but virtual has allowed people, like Ruth who live all the way back over in Stratford, Ontario to be on that team. Our guest this week explains how she works diligently to provide the best possible audio description experience for the users of the service that she can.

Trans Exclusionary (Erasing) Radical Feminists are in the Pagan news again. Max Dashu, Z Budapest, and Ruth Barrett, to name but a few, have reared their heads and made things uncomfortable in the Pagan world once again. But this is a good thing. Why? It is causing the Pagan world to talk (again) about these issues. Listen in to hear what KaliSara and RevKess have to say on this issue and more. If time allows, they may address the issue of Pagan Standard Time and how it is a detriment to the Pagan world as well.
Greetings on this fine November day! The women of WLRN invite you to sit back and relax with A Tribute to the Women Who Came Before Us. This special herstorical podcast focuses on the achievements and experiences of second wave feminists. Our foremothers built the groundwork for liberation years ago, and we must heed their advice to nurture this movement as they have, with clear intentions and courageous hearts. As the seasons change, let us dedicate a moment or two to our righteous feminist past. This month, our podcast begins with Sarah's hand-crafted headlines from all around the globe and then the song Misty Mountain by classic lesbian musician, Ferron. Next, Julia interviews Falcon River, who shares her stories of the second wave as an out butch lesbian, blazing a fresh trail Home. After a brief interlude with "Ancestor's Song" by Kellianna, Amanda interviews Linda Bellos, a candid second waver who's been no-platformed from Cambridge University. Paula Cole's "Tiger" is followed by Thistle's interview with Tara Ayers, a stalwart organizer who ensures the accessibility of physical sisterhood. Rounding out the hour is Sekhmet's incendiary commentary to feed the flames of feminism in all of us. Brew a cup of clover, and dust off that old fleece. Your sisters are waiting. Guests' Bios: Falcon River is a professional craftswoman, massage therapist, intuitive archer, and ordained priestess. As a butch lesbian in the early 70’s, River found employment as a drag king, winning the title of “Mr. Roanoke” for two consecutive years. In 1975, she and her partner founded the very first multi-functional lesbian bar in Louisville, Kentucky. That same year, River helped establish and defend the first Michigan Women’s Music Festival. In 1999, she met Ruth Barrett, and together they founded the Temple of Diana, a female-only congregation of dianic witches. Linda Bellos is a proud out Lesbian feminist, a mother and grandmother with an African Father who came to England in 1942 and a Jewish mother born in England. Ms. Bellos has been involved in the Women’s Liberation Movement before it fell apart, and in Municipal Government. In 1984 she wrote and published a short paper called The Limitations of Identity Politics. Later she became active in Black Sections of the Labour Party. Ms. Bellos was barred from speaking last month at Cambridge University in the UK due to her gender-critical stance. Tara Ayres is a cultural activist who has spent the last 43 years producing women’s and lesbian and gay concerts, theater and other cultural events, first in Kansas City, then in Connecticut and Wisconsin, and now in the San Francisco Bay Area. After years of producing women’s concerts and dances in Madison, WI, she served for 9 years as the Artistic Director of StageQ, Madison’s LGBT theater troupe. She was involved in community radio for 35 years, on WYBC-FM in New Haven as part of the Come Out Tonight collective, and then at community radio station WORT-FM in Madison as an anchor and producer for Her Turn, a feminist radio news collective and Queery, a program about LGBTQ+, and as a music programmer for Her Infinite Variety and Better Living Through Show Tunes. Ms. Ayres currently serves on the board of directors for the We Want the Land Coalition (WWTLC), a feminist organization seeking to purchase the land the Michigan Womyn's Music Festival happened on for forty years.
This interview was done by Elizabeth McKeown on June 30th of 2016. Ruth Barrett is editor of the book 'Female Erasure: What You Need to Know About Gender Politics’ War on Women, the Female Sex & Human Rights.'
WLRN's fourth monthly podcast examines the cultural phenomenon of female erasure with emphasis on the importance of women-only spaces. It is packed with input from influential and passionate women dedicated to female liberation, marking the one year anniversary of the end of the Michigan Womyn's Music Festival (MichFest)-- a notoriously woman-only event which took place yearly for 40 years. Thistle Pettersen visits the land and reports back with women's voices. Also featured: WLRN's Sekhmet She-Owl speaks with Sarah Jones, a WoLF (Women's Liberation Front) organizer, about WoLF Fest-- a women-only event taking place in September in California. Also coming out in September is the book Female Erasure, compiled by Ruth Barrett, who spoke with our own Elizabeth McKeown. You can also hear the music of former MichFest performer Nedra Johnson.
RevKess & KaliSara invited Christina Taft, one of the organizers of Beyond the Gates in Oregon, to join them briefly to talk about this new event. Later in the show the hosts will discuss the new project from Ruth Barrett that seeks to erase transwomen. Along the way they will discuss recent U.S. political news, the Presidential race, and much more. KaliSara's News in a Flash has become a favorite part of the show, listen all the way through to hear what she thinks might be of interest to the Pagan community!
