Holding Space? What about Thickening Space?? Inspired by The Muppets, Ani DiFranco, Sinead O'Connor, and Joni Mitchell- queer music icon - B*TCH is here to talk about her musical memoir, B*TCHCRAFT at wild project. Sarah and B*TCH talk about political art, musical theatre, "thickening space" in acting class, violin, One Long Earring, and much much more! B*tch (Creator/Performer) is a longstanding queer music icon who Yahoo Entertainment called “a feminist force that the world needs now more than ever” when she released “B*tchcraft,” her 9th studio album, on the legendary label Kill Rock Stars in 2022. With her signature electric violin and lyrical smarts front and center over huge beats and deep synths, B*tch coined the genre “Poet Pop.” “B*tchcraft is a masterpiece,” said Amy Ray of the Indigo Girls. Both Indigo Girls and Ani DiFranco took B*tch on tour as their opener. Joey Soloway (Transparent) directed the music video for “Easy Target.” B*tch first achieved notoriety as one half of the folk duo B*tch and Animal. The duo had met in acting school at DePaul University (formerly the Goodman School of Drama), where B*tch was the recipient of the Merit Scholarship for two years in a row. They toured with Ani DiFranco, and released two albums on her label Righteous Babe Records, and were nominated for a GLAAD Media award in 2003. In 2004, B*tch went solo, and shared stages with the Indigo Girls, acted in John Cameron Mitchell's film “Shortbus,” co-wrote a song with Margaret Cho, and produced two albums of her elder and folk hero Ferron. Recently, she played a role in the new Audible podcast of Alison Bechdel's “Dykes To Watch Out For,” alongside Jane Lynch, Carrie Brownstein and Roxane Gay. The series was directed by Leigh Silverman (Suffs, Violet, Well), and Bitch co-wrote a song for it with Faith Soloway (Transparent, A Transparent Musical). Get to know Skull Riot! A unique two-piece band creating a big sound! We got together with J. Ferron to get the story of the band, and we feature one of the scorching tracks from the EP! Rock and Roll music (and conversation) that DESERVES to be heard!Skull Riot is a bone-crushing noisy band fronted by J. Ferron on bass and vocals. Their innovative approach to hard rock, metal, and stoner with their distinct screaming creates a unique sound that is pure electrifying energy. Based out of Los Angeles, CA, Skull Riot follows the steps of Mike Kerr and Royal Blood, creating a big wall of sound with riff-driven songs that you can headbang to. Sam Epstein joins the band in March of 2024 and with him behind the drums, their live sound becomes a head-turner. Their power was captured in the studio giving birth to their first EP: "Too Little... Too Late". With 5 songs total and just south of 14 min. of pure adrenaline, Skull Riot begins this journey exploring what can be done with just two instruments and a lot of heavy riffs.
Réalisation : Jenny Cartwright et David Cherniak Conception sonore : Thierry Gauthier Avec : Edith Brunette, Caro Caron, Audrey Desrosiers, Éloane Francoeur, Margo Ganassa, Diane Gagné, Nadine Guertin, Michel Giroux, Pierre Guimond, Marie-Pierre Grenier, Dan Lejeune, Jacques Rivard, Eric Saindon, Magali Saint-Vincent, Pascal Savard et Janet Torge. Thar she blows! Aaron had the pleasure of chatting with writer/director Neil Ferron about his short film Fishmonger, a horror-comedy hybrid that is one delightfully strange catch you'll definitely want to feast your eyes on. The film had its world premiere at this year's Fantastic Fest in the festival's Burnt Ends section, a collection of films that “shatter all traditional borders of taste and convention." Welcome to our annual digest of Michigan Women's Music & Arts Festivals! This Summer of 2023 was packed with gynocentric encounters, culture and music! First up, hear long-time WLRN member April Neault greet the listener with her announcement that she is stepping back from her monthly duties with WLRN after this edition and that we are looking for a new volunteer to work our YouTube channel and do some video editing. You'll also hear a special announcement from April about a women's speaking event happening in Ottowa, Ontario Canada on September 9th. For more info about that event, go to womensrightsmatter.ca. Next, Mary O'Neill delivers WLRN's World News segment that includes stories about gender ID laws in Norway and the ongoing crackdown on Iranian feminist activists. Next, enjoy "August Moon" by Nedra Johnson, a long-time Michigan performer and founder of Big Mouth Girl on the Land. After the world news, we take you on a journey to a rainy tent at MFR where Thistle and Emily interview a young detransitioned woman who attended Fest in Michigan for the first time this year. Enjoy the ambient sounds and a visit from a neighbor who walks over to chat about the big puddle of water under her tent after the rain! Also, enjoy Lou's beautiful and moving performance of "If I Wrote You" by Dar Williams during this interview segment. Following the interview, you'll hear Ferron's song "Misty Mountain" right before jumping into Jenna's commentary about her experiences at Fest this year and how women's spirituality and spiritual practices are essential to getting out of the bounds of patriarchy. After Jenna's two cents, the listener is treated to Thistle's commentary interwoven with clips of her performance of two of her original songs on the Land, an ukulele choir rehearsal, and a trip to the marketplace downtown in the women's village that springs up every year on the Land. Thank you so much, dear listeners, for tuning in to our woman-powered monthly show and for spreading it far and wide throughout the Femisphere. Join us next month for a digest of the Women's Declaration International - USA's Convention happening over the weekend of September 16th in San Francisco. Thanks to WLRN member Emily Faye for stepping up to cover this herstoric event. Archaeologist and historian Edward L. Bell joins ‘All Your Days' to talk about his recent book, a history — and a mystery (and he's come the furthest in solving it) — tied to stories of slaves in the Northeast U.S. and what we think we know about bastions of abolition. A lot. Heavy talk. Good talk. Needed talk. Ed and I go back as musical friends as well, and I learn a lot about this person I've known for many years, including his parents' early days around Woody Guthrie and Leadbelly, and our shared connection to Ferron's incredible songwriting.Clips in this episode:Shadows On A Dime (Ferron, ‘Not A Still Life: Live At The Great American Music Hall' - 1992)Classroom Scene (‘Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade' - 1989)

Listen to hear how Tracy has transformed personal trauma to help others. How she is using art for healing, for connection and to raise awareness about social justice issues to affect change. Tracy Ferron is the Founder and Executive Director of Life on Earth Art, a California-based non-profit organization working to heal trauma and division in our society by fusing community art-making, art therapy, and activism with touring large-scale art experiences. LOEA offers transformative healing work to schools, social service organizations, public and correctional institutions, partnering with other non-profits. Ferron's work illuminates social injustices which beg for awareness, compassion and action. Her large winged heart artworks have graced protests for incarcerated rights at San Quentin Prison and the Women's March in Sacramento, CA. Her museum installations have explored medical experimentation (2018), the murder of global activists (2019), and community artmaking celebrating loved ones lost for Día de los Muertos (2021). Tracy conceived of and produced Unbound (2021-22), an 80-foot community made sculpture of hundreds of paper mâché winged hearts flying free from a cage in an innovative year-long partnership with 70 therapists at one of California's largest psychiatric facilities. This project brought art-making engagement to over 500 psychiatric patients, 200 staff and 800 community participants–creating a sense of belonging and uplift. Unbound was recognized with a first place award for Arts for Innovation by the National Organization for Arts in Health in November 2022. Tracy received her Master's Degree in Engaged Humanities at Pacifica Graduate Institute. She has presented at Burning Man (2014), the Jungian Society for Scholarly Studies (2017), Google Headquarters (2018), the Northern California Art Therapy Association (2020) and Pacifica Graduate Institute (2021). These two meetings inspired Cecilia to conceive her personal project: The Lab of Joy. A laboratory, in fact, that researches and develops means of expression that are aimed at the unfolding qualities of one's human expression and soul. Transitioning out of religion isn't easy. Many of us have built our personal identity around our religious worldview and community, but what to do when that's gone or slipping away? We may be left feeling perplexed, confused, depressed and anxious in the aftermath of departing long held faith practices. This RfRx discussion will focus on strategies to rebuild a sense of self and self worth after one's religious identity is stripped away, as well as making rational decisions about unhealthy behaviors in contrast with sin consciousness. Ferron P. Wiley is an author, public speaker, and podcast host with a unique and wry sense of humor. He has twenty-plus years in the mental health industry working with children adolescents and adults. Having also served ten years presiding as Founder and Senior Pastor of a radically inclusive non-denominational church, he has been afforded a wide range of experiences and insight across the spectrum of humanity. Since recently leaving the Christian faith his core objective is to encourage people who perhaps are not well connected to their own personal value, help them to establish that as a foundation and to learn strategies to use that value as a springboard for pursuing happier and more productive lives. Exposing Sexual Abuse of Children in the Evangelical Church Author Ferron P. Wiley shares his traumatic experience in public talks and his 'Memoirs of Innocence Lost' book series. Growing up in the Christian church should provide guidance and spiritual enrichment, not abuse or shameful secrets. Author Ferron P. Wiley is finally telling his traumatic story of abuse and betrayal in the Christian church in order to help others in similar situations. Tabernacle of Lies, the first book in the Memoirs of Innocence Lost series which recounts the story of Ferron's upbringing in Rochester, New York, and his introduction to Christian faith traditions. Additionally, this was in the mid-1980s during the rise of American televangelism networks like PTL with Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker. Against this backdrop, young Wiley endured censure from the pulpit because of his homosexuality – all while being sexually abused by the same ministers privately. Surrounded by hypocrisy, Wiley shares his struggle with organized religion and self-affirmation. His passion for music and performance provides an outlet for self-expression. Mr. Wiley is available for interviews and can be contacted at fwileybookclub@gmail.com For RfRx comments, inquiries & topical questions, email us at RfRx@recoveringfromreligion.org.
