In this episode of Insight is Capital, Pierre Daillie chats with Jason Buck, Chief Investment Officer at Mutiny Fund, to discuss defensive and offensive strategies in portfolio management - with equity valuations of the "Magnificent 7" it's now particularly essential for advisors and investors alike to consider defense ahead of any potential reversals. Buck points out that from a business perspective, advisors are leveraged to the equity market by 3-4x, when their business AUM is exposed to drawdown risks. Jason shares his journey from a real estate developer affected by the 2008 financial crisis to a consultant on risk management and bespoke long volatility strategies. He highlights the 'cockroach investment strategy' and the necessity of combining offensive assets like stocks and bonds with defensive assets like long volatility and commodity trend advisors. The importance of rebalancing, the concept of convexity, and the practical application of strategies like the Harry Brown portfolio model are discussed in detail. Using the memorable Herschel Walker analogy, Jason underscores the importance of a well-diversified portfolio. This episode is essential for investors and advisors looking to understand the implementation and benefits of a balanced approach to portfolio construction.Timestamped Highlights00:00 Introduction - Guest - Jason Buck, Mutiny Fund00:14 Jason Buck's Background and Investment Philosophy00:49 The Cockroach Investment Strategy01:20 Podcast Disclaimer and Welcome Back01:49 Discussing the Cockroach Strategy03:08 Importance of Diversification and Defense Strategy04:44 Launching the Defense Strategy06:47 The Great Financial Crisis and Its Lessons07:40 Combining Offensive and Defensive Assets08:53 Harry Brown's Four Quadrant Model09:33 Modern Portfolio Techniques and Convexity12:33 Commodity Trend Advisors (CTAs) Explained14:12 The Role of CTAs in Inflationary Environments15:01 Ensemble of CTAs for Robust Returns24:04 Challenges in Explaining Trend Following30:43 Understanding the Buy Button Mentality31:05 The Case for Commodity Trend Following31:38 Challenges in Portfolio Allocation32:42 Financial Advisors and Client Resistance34:37 The Importance of Defensive Assets36:37 Cash and Capital Efficiency39:19 Long Volatility and Tail Risk Explained41:02 Convexity and Portfolio Insurance48:51 Rebalancing for Effective Compounding55:45 The Herschel Walker Trade Analogy58:57 Conclusion and Final ThoughtsCopyright © AdvisorAnalyst
In this episode of the Effective Giving Podcast, host Lane Kipp interviews Harry Brown, president of New Generations, on the impactful work his organization is undertaking in creating disciple-making movements across 93 countries, involving over 129,000 new churches and 2.6 million new followers of Jesus. Harry shares insights into the simplicity and replicability of their model, emphasizing the vital role each believer plays in the Great Commission.

Jason Buck is the co-founder and CIO of Mutiny Funds and maybe one of the most interesting people I know. Jason made, and subsequently lost, a fortune in commercial real estate in the 2008 crash. This “ego destroying event” was the catalyst for him to completely rethink the idea of resiliency, both in business and investments. Jason spent the better part of the 2010s developing the Cockroach portfolio, a modern take on Harry Brown's permanent portfolio. A quarter stocks, a quarter bonds, a quarter CTA, and a quarter long volatility, Jason has designed the portfolio to provide all weather returns, with the possibility of serving as an entrepreneurial hedge. We discuss the value of tail hedging, tail hedges versus long volatility trades, the limits of manager diversification, and managed futures/CTAs versus static commodity positions. As a final note, this episode was recorded live at the Exchange ETF event in Miami. Enjoy.

The first chapter can make or break a reader's engagement with a story. We as writers must craft brilliant opening pages in order to hook those picky readers, so let's study the stories of others to see how they do it! Deanna Raybourn's Killers of a Certain Age certainly needs no prologue to hook readers! Instead, her opening chapter starts with the protagonists preparing for their first mission--not only as stewardesses, but as assassins, too. I mean, when the third and fourth sentences of the novel are "It's not murder," Helen corrects. "It's an assassination, and you can make an effort to look nice.", you as a reader know you're in for a fun time. The opening scene introduces us to a group of women new to this "life of lies" as they prepare for their first mission under their supervisors posing as airline pilots. The dialogue drags a smidge on the fourth page, but there's enough personality in the exchange that we as readers are okay with the slow preparation, as we are learning to differentiate the character traits of the team. Plus, a brief reflection by one of the women helps remind readers just how much is at stake: not just the mission, but the lives of everyone on the mission, too. The use of movie lines during the exchange also helps emphasize the timeframe we are dealing with, as this first chapter is, essentially, a flashback to the protagonists' first mission in 1979. The majority of the story is to take place in the present day when all these female assassins are older. For one who loved the movies Red, Harry Brown, Sea Wolves, and yes, Arsenic and Old Lace, I'm really excited to see what time does to these ladies--and what happens to those foolish enough to underestimate them. What will you make of these first five pages? Let's find out!

The political and socio-economical world is changing rapidly. What's happening isn't just a part of the normal cycle. So how do we adapt in these changing times? In this episode of UpThinking Finance™, Rodrigo Gordillo shares why low inflation isn't normal, talks about the Fed's over-reliance on fiscal spending, and his company's concept of return stacking (and how it works). Rodrigo Gordillo is the Co-Founder, Managing Partner, and Portfolio Manager of ReSolve Asset Management. They launched ReSolve in 2015 using a quantitatively focused investment methodology that they began developing when they worked as portfolio managers at private wealth management firms. He was lucky to be the son of a math professor and naval officer. His father made it far in the information technology space so he was sent to Monterrey, CA for further training. He used to joke that his job was to answer a question poorly that would otherwise be answered worse. When he left the Navy, he started a software development company. Because of this, Rodrigo was always surrounded by computers and information. In 1989, the President of Peru decided to default on IMF loans. Inflation soared 7,200% in six months. Whatever anyone had in savings went to zero—including his grandfather's savings. The big winners were the debtors and the big losers were the savers. It was an impactful moment in Rodrigo's life. It's also why he makes sure any investments he works on account for periods of high inflation. How Rodrigo got into quantitative analysisRodrigo notes that quantitative analysis can be made simple. It's a set of rules he and his team have coded to make sure they're disciplined and executing religiously on their investment philosophy. He emphasizes that the philosophy is what's important. In the late 80s, Harry Brown recommended that you have 25% of your money in cash, 25% in gold, 25% in equities for growth, and 25% in treasuries for bear markets. It's an early version of how people think about portfolio balance today. You have to decide what balance means for each segment. Ultimately, Rodrigo seeks to create balance with diversity (global equities, bonds, and commodities in the portfolio) within regimes. You update the risk rather than dollar weights. It's far better than a 60/40 portfolio. Markets are complex, and Rodrigo notes that you can't conflate your lived experience with expertise. The experience has been 40 years of a low inflation market, persistent positive growth, and abundant liquidity. It is not common and it's not the norm. You have to have the expertise to look at history and understand it. That's how he and his team landed on return stacking. Rodrigo's concept of return stackingWhen you have a diversified strategy, advisors are asking you to give space in the portfolio to zig when others zag. It creates a better risk-adjusted return. For every unit of risk you take, you're given more units of return because they added diversity. It lowers volatility and smooths out the return streams over long periods. But from an absolute basis, your returns will be lower. In the last couple of years, a few innovative funds use derivatives to get additional exposure for every dollar you give them. PIMCO has a fund that invests in an active bond portfolio and uses the collateral to buy an S&P Futures contract that is 100%. So when you buy...

You may think the fact that Harry Brown has traveled to 70 countries is remarkable. But that's nothing compared to the fact that it's all been for the organization he leads, New Generations, which has catalyzed the planting of more than 92,000 churches. That's 92,000 churches. More than two million new believers. Harry has worked for New Generations (formerly Cityteam International) for 48 years and says the approach of supporting disciples making disciples results in compounding the increase in believers. “All around the world we're seeing growth in God's Kingdom,” he says, “but it's not addition we're seeing … it's multiplication.” To learn more about New Generations, click here: https://newgenerations.org/ Original air date: September 22, 2022See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

“The Midnight Sky is a film with big scopes. We have big vistas, we're in space, we are on the moon, in the Arctic. Also, it's a very intimate film because it's a lot about connection, so we when we see people we get close to them and we feel intimate with them because we are literally with the camera quite close to them and looking into their faces. In this film, it helped that we went on 65mm. We shot on a large format. First of all we started that for the big landscapes, but I think it's great also for faces because the face also becomes like a landscape.”Martin Ruhe is the internationally-acclaimed German cinematographer behind the Netflix film The Midnight Sky directed by and starring George Clooney. Previously, Ruhe worked on Catch-22, also directed by Clooney, as well as the critically acclaimed Counterpart, Run All Night with Liam Neeson, and the British Independent film award winner Control. Ruhe photographed the dark spy thriller Page Eight for BBC Films, directed by David Hare. The film earned him an American Society of Cinematographers Outstanding Achievement in Cinematography in Motion Picture/Miniseries Television Award for his work on the film.Working closely with director Anton Corbijn, Ruhe photographed The American. Starring Clooney as an aging assassin on an assignment to create a specialized weapon, Ruhe's meticulously arranged shots helped to build the tone of The American, while reviews applauded the film's beauty. Ruhe lensed Harry Brown, a Michael Caine-starring vigilante thriller which premiered at 2009's Toronto International Film Festival. I would hope that the American people would look past my gender and just look at the ideas. I want to see freedom in my lifetime. I want to see people be able to make their own decisions. -Jo Jorgensen Meet Dr. Jo Jorgensen, Libertarian candidate for President of the United States. In Boston as part of her whirlwind tour across America, Jo agreed to an exclusive interview with me. Born in Libertyville, Illinois, and raised in a nearby town with only one stop light, Jo had a libertarian mindset before she knew anything about the Libertarian Party. A graduate of Baylor University, Jo went on to Southern Methodist University for her MBA and earned her PhD in Industrial and Organizational Psychology from Clemson University in 2002 where she is now a senior lecturer. The VP running mate for Harry Brown in the 1996 presidential campaign, Jo believes that “our government is too big, too bossy, too nosy and too intrusive. It's time to put the decision making power back into the hands of the people.” In this interview, she explains what it means to be Libertarian, and answers my questions about key issues like: how to heal unrest in our country, what she would have done if she were president during the Coronavirus outbreak, her views on our criminal justice system, the police, her stance on decriminalizing drugs, healthcare, our military, prayer in schools, the IRS, the FDA, no-knock raids, and whether to send teachers and children back into the classroom. But it is Jo's heartfelt answers about gender, motherhood, how she gets around obstacles, and her view on what success really means that give the listener a clear view of the contents of her character. With her supporters repurposing #imwithher Jo's hope is that as a third party candidate, she will be able to debate President Trump and former Vice President Biden on a national stage so that voters can understand what she truly stands for. #letherspeak #letherdebate #JoJorgensen2020

Hollywood legend Sir Michael Caine returns to the big screen in King of Thieves, the second cinematic adaptation of the infamous Hatton Garden burglary in 2015. The south London born actor looks back at his varied career, which he has seen him act alongside Sean Connery, Sylvester Stallone and even the Muppets and also become synonymous darker criminal roles, in films such as Get Carter, Harry Brown and the Italian Job.When Israel Public Radio recently broadcast part of Wagnar's Gotterdammerung or the Twilight of the Gods, it caused a furore leading the station issued an apology. This is because since 1938 there has been an understanding that, because for his anti-Semitism, Wagner's music is neither performed nor broadcast in Israel. Stig talks to Jonathan Livni, founder of Wagner in Israel, who is in favour of lifting the ban, and Yael Cherniavsky, the conductor and soprano, who used to run the offending radio network, who disagrees. Scotland's first design museum, the £80 million Victorian & Albert Dundee, opens this weekend on the city's waterfront. It will have a permanent collection which promises to tell the story of Scotland's design heritage.
