Ya sabéis, y si no os lo cuento, que Lamborghini nació de un enfado de Ferrucio Lamborghini con Enzo Ferrari. Se podría decir que Bultaco nació, quizás no de un enfado pero si de un desacuerdo entre Pere Permanyer y Paco Bulto… Una historia que vale la pena. Aunque siempre digo que las historia se empiezan por el principio, hoy comienzo por el final… ¡qué pena! ¿Cómo hemos podido dejar los españoles que marcas como Bultaco desaparezcan? Ahora vemos como el gobierno va a dar una “ayudita” ¡por Dios con comillas lo de “ayudita”! de 397 millones de euros para montar una fábrica de baterías en Sagunto… Para “Don Paco Bulto” la competición era imprescindible, no solo porque era un terreno ideal para la innovación, sino como publicidad. Su frase era “las ventas siguen a la bandera a cuadros”. Todo lo contrario que pensaba Pere Permanyer. Ambos, Paco y Pere, Pere y Paco, había fundado Montesa en 1944… una marca que se puede decir que aún existe, aunque sea como “división de Trial de Honda”... algo es algo. El desencuentro provocó que el 17 de mayo de 1958 naciese Bultaco, Don Paco se fuese de Montesa y tras él muchos ingenieros y trabajadores. Tralla 101. Ni corto ni perezoso Don Paco montó la fábrica, modestísima en ese momento, como quien dice en su propia casa, en la Masía de San Antonio, en Cunit (Tarragona). Y solo cuatro meses en 1959 se presentaba a la prensa la Tralla 101, la moto que tiene el honor de ser la primera Bultaco. Apenas dos meses después de presentar las Tralla, el equipo Bultaco se inscribió en el G.P de España en el circuito de Montjuic, en una categoría entonces muy interesante como “escaparate” que se denominaba “Categoría Comerciales” con motos casi "de serie". Los resultados fueron muy buenos… aunque no óptimos. Quedaron en los puestos 2.º, 3.º, 4.º, 5.º, 7.º, 8.º y 9.º. Y os preguntaréis por qué digo que los resultados no fueron óptimos. Sencillo, porque ganó la Montesa de Tey Elizalde. Porque la estrategia de Bultaco, al final, obligó a Permanyer a participar en carreras. Don Paco se había salido con la suya por partida doble. A partir de esa Tralla el equipo comenzó a hacer mejoras: Carburador más “gordo”, tubarro, retoques en las lumbreras…. Y así nace la Tralla Sport o TS que nuevamente mejorada se convierte en la "TSS" o "Tralla Super Sport". Una moto mítica y hoy día cotizadísima para correr en clásica. Con esa moto en diversas cilindradas desde 175 a 350 cm3, Bultaco batía cinco récords del mundo de velocidad en larga distancia en el autódromo de Montlhéry (Francia). Don Paco tenía un piloto favorito: Ramón Torras según él "El piloto más veloz que conocí jamás". Pero Toras fallecía en un accidente una carrera local en Comarruga… A pesar de todas sus convicciones este drama supuso que Bultaco abandonase de forma oficial el Mundial de Velocidad. No volvería hasta 1976 con Ángel Nieto. Pero esa es otra historia… que contaremos. Pero donde verdaderamente destacó Bultaco y diría que la mayoría de las marcas españolas fue en el off Road. La lista de modelos off Road de Bultaco es interminable, pero me quiero centrar en una: La Sherpa. En esa época el Trial estaba dominado por pesadas motos inglesas de 4 tiempos con pilotos también ingleses… Uno de esos pilotos era Sammy Miller. Ya existía la Sherpa, una moto nacida como TT matriculable. Pero Miller pensó, con acierto, que una Sherpa, mucho más ligera y con motor de 2 tiempos, a poco que se adaptase al Trial, iba a ser una moto imbatible. Y acertó. Las Pursang, abreviatura de “pura sangre” era como se llamaban las motos de motocross. Cuando nacieron las especialidad off-road primero nació el Trial y el Motocross, pues el enduro llegaría más tarde. La Pursang 250 MKI fue la primera moto destinada al motocross. Los hermanos Rickman, especialistas británicos en chasis tuvieron mucho que ver con esa moto, conocida popularmente como "Metisse". La Frontera sucedió a la Matador y fue la moto de Enduro, inicialmente llamado Todo Terreno, que a mí me gusta más, hasta la desaparición de la marca. Narcís Casas, que luego fundaría con Josep Pibernat la marca Gas Gas, se hartó de ganar carreras y títulos con estas motos, nada menos que 76 Campeonatos de España y 3 medallas de oro en los ISDE. El modelo de carretea por excelencia eran las Metralla, con el paso del tiempo con menos carácter deportivo, pero mucho más utilizables. Además, tiene un logro único: La Metralla GTS de 1977 fue la única Bultaco que se comercializo en varios colores. Pero llegaron las marcas japonesas, la crisis del petróleo, las huelgas muy frecuentes en los primeros años de la transición, dificultades financieras, baja rentabilidad… Otras marcas se asociaron con empresas japones, como Montesa con Honda, Puch con Suzuki o Sanglas con Yamaha. Pero Bultaco no. En 2014 renace como fabricante de motos eléctricas… un fracaso. Ni la gente, ni las motos ni la filosofía tenían nada que ver con la verdadera Bultaco.

First Night Burlington creates a bluegrass gospel project, and a seven piece group creates a TEDx showcasing their irresistible philosophy on jazz. This is episode 54 of Caffe Lena: 60 Years of Song . Thank you to Sarah at the Caffe for the list of songs and artists for the feature. Bluegrass Gospel Project is made up of members of top bluegrass bands from New England. They originally formed for a one-time First Night Concert in Burlington, VT in 2001. They continued to impress music fans with stellar vocals and powerful gospel music for 16 years before disbanding. Sammy Miller and the Congregation have crisscrossed the country to bring art back to the people. This seven-piece group is a community of adventurous and charismatic conservatory-trained musicians who have retained their childlike wonder for playing music. Our guest this morning is musician, Corbin Jones. Corbin hails from Denver, Colorado, where he began pursuing music with classical double bass studies in grade school. After graduating Kum Laude, and completing a Bachelor of Music in Jazz Studies from USC, his love of groove led him to a career in performing and recording upright and electric bass, and sousaphone. Notable jazz performances include collaborations Ron Miles, Munyungo Jackson, Bob Sheppard, and many shows with Sammy Miller & the Congregation in the Appel Room of Jazz at Lincoln Center, the 2016 and 2017 Umbria Jazz Festivals in Perugia, Italy, and the 2017 Monterey Jazz Festival. Corbin has also provided bass work for 50 Cent, Kendrick Lamar, Gwen Stefani, and most recently, sousaphone on Beyonce and Jay-Z's OTR II 2018 world tour. KNKX hosted students of Seattle JazzED's Summer Advanced Institute for a second time in August, and the kids set a new record for largest group to play in our studios. A total of 29 students split into 3 combos with mentors Riley Mulhelkar (trumpeter with the Westerlies, this Seattle native now lives in New York City), Sammy Miller (New York-based drummer who leads Sammy Miller and the Congregation), and Marina Albero (the Spanish pianist who's thrilled Seattle audiences upon her arrival in 2014). Each of the mentors stressed the importance of teamwork in jazz education, and these kids certainly got along well. Another point of mention to the students was to enjoy each moment you get to play, that seemed baked into the day with Seattle JazzED. The non-profit organization has been working hard to provide the best jazz education possible for Puget Sound area kids since 2010, and this year participation has grown to serve over 900 kids.
