Bir ağabeyimiz Yeni Şafak gazetesine yönlendirdi. “Git şunu bul. Konuş. Getir götür işleri yaparsın” dedi. Minibüs duraklarının arasından sora sora Topkapı'daki eski binaya geldim. Buldum o kişiyi. Sağ olsun ilgilendi. Çay söyledi, anlattım durumu. “Sen daha liseye başlamamışsın. Üç ay sonra da okula gideceksin. Gazetede sana uygun geçici bir iş yok” dedi. Haklıydı. Üzüldüğümü görünce aklına bir şey geldi. “Gazete dağıtabilir misin?” diye sordu. Hiç düşünmeden “Yaparım” anlamında kafa sallayınca da aradı temsilcilerden sorumlu kişiyi. Öğleden sonra Güngören'deki dağıtıcının yanındaydım. Evimize yakındı, yürüyerek 10 dakikaya bulmuştum. Mezarlığın üst tarafında, şimdilerde hastanenin olduğu yerde, depoyla dükkân arası bir yerdi. Önünde de iki tane Puch motor. Görüştük, anlaştık. Temsilci, “Sen yaparsın bu işi” dedi. Tam aradıkları kişiydim. Okullar açılına kadar, askerde olan yeğeni gelecekti. O boşluğu dolduracaktım. Motorlar kapının önündeydi ama ne tecrübem vardı ne de ehliyet. Bana bir bisiklet ayarlandı. Arkasında sele. Üstünde plastik sepet. Günde 250-300 gazete. Yarısından fazlası Yeni Şafak. Sabah namazdan önce düşecektim yollara. Güngören'den aşağıya, Çeşme, Köprü, Sanayi Mahallesi, Merter ve Tozkoparan'dan geri dönüş. Saat 9 olmadan bitmeliymiş dağıtım. Sabah kapısını açan esnaf önce gazeteyi görmeliymiş. İlk bir hafta sokakları, evleri, dükkânları bilen biriyle dolaştık. O motorla, ben bisikletle. Yolu yordamı öğrendim. Elimde sayfalarca adres listesi, bir de Güngören'in sokak haritası. Önce sokakları ezberledim, sonra da güzergâhları sıralamayı. O sokaktan şu caddeye, sonra aşağıdaki binaya. Haritayı bir haritaya yakışırcasına okunmaz hale getirdim. Çok değil 15 gün sonra ne adres listesi ne de haritaya gerek kaldı. Hepsi zihnimdeydi. İlk gazeteyi pimapenciye bırakıyordum. Sabah 5'te. Kepenge sıkıştırıp, Güngören'den aşağı tek solukta iniyordum. Her anı her sokağı film şeridi gibi aklımda. Dördüncü kata gazete fırlatmayı kotardığımda karşı apartmandaki abladan alkış almıştım. Meğer her sabah izliyormuş beni. Alttaki balkona kaç kez düşürdüm bilmiyorum. Artık dilediğim yere tek seferde atabiliyordum. İşi kavramıştım ama okulların açılmasına da günler kalmıştı. Bir sabah gazete dağıtırken bisikletime bir taksi çarptı. Ön tekeri tamamen ezdi, kullanılacak gibi değildi. Plakası hâlâ aklımda... Oturdum kaldırama öylece bakakaldım. Hurdaya çıkan bisikleti bir esnafa emanet edip, kalan birkaç gazeteyi yürüyerek dağıttım. O gün bıraktım gazete dağıtmayı. Taksicinin bana vurduktan sonra kaçıp gitmesine içerlemiştim. Zaten okullar da açılacaktı... Ama Yeni Şafak beni hiç bırakmadı. O yaz sonu İstanbul İmam-Hatip'e başladım. Sene 1998'di, 28 Şubat sürecinin ensede boza pişirdiği günler... Hemen her gün manşetlerden ve de ana haber ekranlarından hedef gösteriliyorduk. İster istemez sahipsizlik duygusuna kapılmıştık. Ama Yeni Şafak vardı. Çok değil birkaç ay önce dağıtırken sabahları ilk benim okuduğum gazetem... Ama benim için işler artık değişmişti. Gazeteyi okumaktan, yazılanları yaşama aşamasına geçmiştim.

Muchos españoles, jóvenes y no tan jóvenes, soñaban, soñábamos, con un ciclomotor. Era una forma de transporte eficaz, barata y divertida. Y la oferta era amplísima. Os traigo algunos muy conocidos… y otros, no tanto. Pero, antes de seguir, ¿qué es un ciclomotor? Si alguno piensa que es una bici con ruedas, en cierto modo acierta. Porque sin ánimo de ser detallista la norma era que la cilindrada estaba limitada a 50 cm3, el peso a 50 kg, tenían que llevar pedales útiles practicables y casi todos los fabricantes anunciaban 2 CV de potencia… para no alarmar a nadie. Con estas características nacieron multitud de ciclomotores… he elegido a 10. A veces hablo de marcas, por ser su producción muy limitada, a veces de modelos. 1. Derbi Variant. Si eres aficionado a la moto y eres español, seguro que conoces a la Variant. Incluso si cuentas con unos añitos, puede que hayas probado o tenido uno de los múltiples modelos de Variant que se fabricaron desde 1977. 2. Ducati Piuma. El Ducati Piuma fue un ciclomotor muy popular en Italia que llegó a España importado por Mototrans.Con su mono cilíndrico de 47 centímetros cúbicos y dos tiempos, el Ducati Piuma rendía 4,2 CV a 8.600 revoluciones por minuto para llevar sus 47 kilos hasta los 80 kilómetros por hora… cifras que se tenían que “capar” para ser homologada como ciclomotor. Gracias a este ciclomotor, Mototrans vio posibilidad de negocio en el segmento de los ciclomotores, muy al alza en aquellos momentos donde la popularización del automóvil estaba acabando con las motos de turismo. 3. GAP SP 95 Campera. G.A.C fabricaba en Éibar bajo licencia de la francesa las populares Mobylette, de las que hablaremos más adelante. Pero también desarrollaron modelos como esta G.A.C SP-95 Campera. G.A.C no tenía nada que ver con las dos ruedas. Se especializó en la producción de armas para acabar fabricando bicicletas a partir de los años veinte del siglo pasado. La Campera no estaba orientada al uso lúdico, como otros ciclomotores con aptitudes de campo, sino que buscaba su clientela entre los trabajadores agrarios. 4. Gimson Canigó TT. Gimson es una de las marcas que pocos recuerdan, pero que tuvo un notable éxito. En este caso si buscó sus compradores entre una emergente clase media que buscaba motos con menos de 50 centímetros cúbicos y, por tanto, evidentes ventajas fiscales, económicas y que podían ser legalmente desde los dieciséis años. 5. Honda Monkey. Conocida por Monkey, el nombre real era Dax o ST. Era una moto original con un chasis en forma de T del que colgaba el motor, un 4T que se fabricó en versiones de 50, 70, 90 y 110cc, con cambios manuales de 4 marchas o semiautomáticos de tres. Aunque no llegó a España, salvó en Canarias, se hizo relativamente popular en manos de turistas extranjeros. La Monkey era una versión equipada con motor, de 50 y 4T semiautomático, que para muchos se convirtió en un sueño. 6. Mobylette. 25 años después de la creación de Motobecane, llegó al mercado su modelo más famoso de todos: la Mobylette. En España, la empresa G.A.C. (Gárate, Anitua y Compañía S.A.) se propuso el objetivo de lanzar vehículos de dos ruedas y 1951 firmaron un acuerdo con Motobecane para fabricar bajo licencia su ciclomotor. De ese modo, la Mobylette comenzó a popularizarse en nuestro país. En 1963 se presentó en España el Mobylette-G.A.C. AV88, quizás el modelo más emblemático de la firma en nuestro país. En los años 60 y 70, la popularidad de estos ciclomotores no decae. Sin embargo, a comienzos de los años 80, Motobecane entró en quiebra y fue adquirida por la compañía japonesa Yamaha, que continuó con la producción cambiando el nombre a MBK, que a los más jóvenes a lo mejor os suena más. 7. Peugeot. "Motores y vehículos S. A." Movesa, fabricó en España a partir de 1960 bajo licencia los las ciclomotores Peugeot. Su utilidad tanto en el mundo urbano como en el campo auguraban buenas perspectivas de ventas para los ciclomotores. De hecho, en solo años más tarde (1966), el volumen de ventas se había triplicado, con una producción de 68.000 ciclomotores fabricados. 8. Puch X30 Cross. Los automáticos siempre fueron parte importante de la gama Puch y pues desde años antes (Torrot o Mobylette) se ofrecían ciclos automáticos para uso mixto campo y asfalto. Puch tenía ya los automáticos X-30 normales y tenía una Minicross que era un absoluto éxito. Pero esta versión “Cross” con la horquilla de más recorrido, guardabarros altos y algunos detalles estéticos hacen esta X-30 Cross la reina de las urbanizaciones dejando el público rural a otras marcas. 9. Vale. En 1981 se presenta en el Salón de Barcelona el Vale, que no es más que un Vespino más sencillo, menos equipado y más barato. Un vehículo que conozco bien porque tuve uno. 10. Vespino. El Vespino sin duda fue el protagonista de los sueños de muchos adolescentes que, como yo, odiaban el metro y el autobús. A finales de los 60 MotoVespa, que fabrica la Vespa bajo licencia de Piaggio en España, se da cuenta de que necesita tener algún ciclomotor en su catálogo. Y se inventan uno porque el Vespino es un reducto completamente desarrollado en España y sólo comparte con la a idea de motor y transmisión en el mismo bloque y de simplificación de componentes. El Vespino nace en el 69 y desaparece ya bien entrados los 9º. Durante todos estos años infinidad de modelos y variantes han sido enormes, pensando en atraer tanto al cliente rural como a los chicos y chicas jóvenes y urbanitas de los 80, pasando por empresas de reparto o incluso cuerpos de policía municipal. O sea, un vehículo para todos. ¡Echo de menos los ciclomotores! Y sobre todo echo de menos que la juventud suele con ellos en vez de con un móvil… me he quedado anticuado.

¡Este podcast me apetecía mucho! Porque todas estás motos me marcaron y dejaron huella en mí y, a día de hoy, me siguen apasionando… Y seguro que a muchos de vosotros, también. Son, todas, preciosas. Y todas fabricadas en España… ¡Qué pena lo que fuimos y lo que somos ahora! ¡Vamos a dejar las cosas claras! Si alguno de vosotros me acusa que esta selección es muy personal y fruto de mis gustos y experiencias personales os lo voy a decir bien claro… ¡tenéis toda la razón! Así que no me acuséis de que tal o cual moto no está, porque ¡hay montones de motos excepcionales que no están! No me caben todas, pero os propongo una cosa: Si os motiva el asunto, podemos hacer este mismo video, pero con las 10 motos elegidas por votación, ¿aceptáis el reto? Pero, mientras llega o no ese momento, esta es mi selección… 1. Bultaco Frontera Gold Medal (1976). En nuestra Web podéis encontrar un artículo sobre esta apasionante moto nacida casi por casualidad. Os cuento: En 1976, Bultaco entregó un importante pedido de Pursang al importador de EE.UU. con un retraso tal, que cuando llegaron las motos, el lote fue devuelto a España. Bultaco adaptó esas Pursang de motocross al Enduro y creó la Gold Medal. Resultó una moto muy competitiva, pero muy difícil de manejar debido a sus cortos desarrollos y a su gran potencia. Y nació el mito: Era una moto solo para pilotos expertos. 2. Derbi Antorcha Tricampeona SE (1969). La “saga” Derbi Antorcha se extendió durante muchos años y fue una moto muy popular en los pueblos de España, tanto que muchos la llamaban la “Derbi Paleta”. Pero era un pedazo de moto con prestaciones sorprendentes para su cilindrada y fácilmente potenciable. Esta moto pesaba poco más de 50 kg y daba 2 CV… un tiro para la época… y como digo, con una lima y un poco de imaginación, era sencillo mejorar mucho la potencia… 3. Derbi R.A.N. (1973). Derbi fue la marca española que quizás atendió menos al off road y más al on road. Sus éxitos en competición con Ángel Nieto dieron lugar a esta moto, la “RAN” es decir, “Réplica Ángel Nieto”. Fue muy popular en las carreras en España, porque era algo único: Un motor monocilíndrico de 2 tiempos, por supuesto, de 50 cm3 que ofrecía nada menos que 14 CV a 16.000 rpm y una máxima de 170 km/h… un verdadero aparato… Hoy es día es una de las motos “Made in Spain” más cotizadas y buscadas en la actualidad. 4. Gilera Enduro ES (1976). Muchos pensaréis: “¿Qué pinta aquí esta moto?”. Esta moto fue la causa de una de mis mayores decepciones y de un verdadero “baño” de realidad en mi adolescencia. ¡Me encantaba esta moto! Me parecía preciosa y las revistas criticaban su excesiva altura y sus suspensiones tirando a duras… algo que me parecía muy adecuado para mi 1,87 m de alto y mis 87 kilos de peso… ¡por cierto, lo mismo que peso ahora! Así que cuando cumplí 16 años me fui a una tienda y pedí precio y financiación… y descubrí, con gran decepción, que ni por asomo me podía comprar esa moto ni ninguna… nuestra relación se quedó en amor platónico. 5. Montesa Cappra 250VB (1978). Las Cappra eran auténticas motos de carreras. De esta VB hubo dos versiones, con pocos cambios en suspensiones y detalles de carrocería. La primera se comercializó entre los años 76 y 77, pero la del 78 es la más “redonda” en todos los aspectos. 6. Ossa MAR (1971). Aquí sucede lo mismo que con la RAN, porque MAR significa Mick Andrews Réplica. El tal Mick era un pilotazo que decidió dedicarse al Trial y fue descubierto por Eduardo Giró, un verdadero genio. La relación fue tan estrecha que Mick traslado su domicilio al Castelldefelds, para estar más cerca de la fábrica y de Eduardo. Por cierto que, al lado, en Gavá Mar viví año y medio cuando trabajé en TV.La MAR llega al trial y consiguió desbancar a las auténticas dominadoras la Bultaco Sherpa y la Montesa Cota. 7. Ossa Yankee (1976). Otra vez nos encontramos con OSSA y con Eduardo Giró. La marca tuvo desde el principio una estrecha relación con los norteamericanos y llegó a vender un 75% de su producción allí. Incluso llegaron a un acuerdo para fabricar motos de manera conjunta con la empresa Yankee Motor. Y Giró desarrolló un motor bicilíndrico que era la suma de dos motores mono de 230 cm3 y daba casi 60 CV. Las Yankee Z500 con motores OSSA no tuvieron buena acogida y OSSA se queda con un motor con el que no sabe qué hacer. Hasta que deciden hacer una moto de carretera extraordinaria para la época, la OSSA Yankee que nace en 1976, la moto más rápida del mercado español gracias a sus 60 CV. 8. Puch Minicross Súper (1972). Mi vecino compró esta moto para llevársela a su pueblo… me la dejó probar y os confieso una cosa: ¡Me parecía enorme y pesada! Pero es que lo más pesado que había llevado hasta ese momento era una bici. Esta moto nace fruto del acuerdo de la marca Avello de Gijón con la austriaca Puch. Tras algunos prototipos y un par de años después, se presentó un precioso ciclomotor de campo, amarillo, con cuatro velocidades, aletas y escape elevados que se llamó Minicross. Fue un éxito inmediato y rotundo. 9. Sanglas 500 S2 V5 (1979). La S2 apareció en 1977 pero he elegido la de 1979 entre otras cosas por el cambio de 5 velocidades. La 500 S2 fue especialmente mimada por la marca, incorporando lo mejor que la industria auxiliar española aportaba en esa época. Esta 500 S2 V5 fue el último modelo fabricado por Sanglas porque a principios de los años ochenta, empezó el “boom” y liberalización de las motos japonesas, y todo se terminó… 10. Vespino GL (1973). El mayor mérito del Vespino es que es un ciclomotor 100x100 español. No es un Piaggio sino que fue creado y fabricado por Motovespa, que es como se llamaba la empresa que fabricaba las Vespa de Piaggio, en España, bajo licencia. No se corresponde a una versión de nada hecho en Italia. Fue un éxito por encima de las expectativas. Se exportó a infinidad de países. Incluso a la propia Italia, donde fue rebautizado: los italianos llamaban cariñosamente a sus Vespa como «Vespone» cuando eran chasis grande y «Vespino» cuando eran las pequeñas, por eso allí se llamó “Piaggio Toledo”: Hay dos conclusiones, una buena y una mala. La buena, ¡que motos tan bonitas y tan divertidas se hicieron en España hasta los años 80 más o menos! La mala, España fue una potencia en el Mundo de la moto, aunque ahora cueste creerlo y, hoy por hoy… solo nos queda Rieju…

Monica Van Haute graduated from college and ended up becoming team manger of PUCH Women's Cycling Team purely by being in the right place at the right time. Monica says it was a labor of love. She would drive around the country to races, prepare food for the racers, and handle all the logistics. Riding on the team ranged from Connie Carpenter-Phinney, Inga Thompson to Sue Novara-Reber. PUCH eventually went away and Levi-Raleigh was formed and picked up the tab. During the 1984 Olympics Monica was a presence good friend Connie could rely on. Eventually she would work with the 7-Eleven team as a soigneur. She worked the 1989 Tour de France where Lemond beat Fignon by 9 seconds. Monica says there was great support from the riders considering it wasn't common to have a woman soigneur. She left cycling in 1989 to start a family and go back to school to become a physical therapist.  Monica says she had a wonderful time and she's made life long friends.
