Send us a textIf you need a reason to love Mondays, Slow Roll Cleveland is it. In this episode, Greg and I join Slow Roll Cleveland and several hundred other cyclists for a leisurely-paced bike parade through our urban streets. Slow Roll Cleveland hosts these ten-mile Monday evening rides during warmer months to highlight Cleveland neighborhoods and bring joy and community to riders and residents alike. Our slow roll took off from Shaker Square and took us through the Shaker, Buckeye, and Mount Pleasant neighborhoods. It was a blast. Hundreds of cyclists on bikes tricked out with bells, boom boxes, and lights shouted "Happy Monday" to excited onlookers waving from tree lawns, porches, and driveways. Slow Roll Cleveland has been hosting these inclusive social bike rides since 2013. Board President, Kevin Jones, spoke with us before the ride about the mission of Slow Roll, how it was founded, and why these rides are so popular. We also spoke with several participants and members of the Squad, the crack volunteers who ensure the rides run smoothly and safely. Come along with us. There is magic in our neighborhoods, in our people, and in the simple joy of riding bikes together. If you were visiting Cleveland and happened upon his restaurant, you might think it's just a traditional French restaurant, but in fact, it's a 501c3 nonprofit focused on providing education, training, and support for those who are formerly incarcerated. After training as a chef himself, Brandon started by teaching in Grafton Correctional Institution in 2011 and now has the French restaurant, a butcher shop, bakery and edwins too; a culinary incubator, community kitchen, event and makers' space. Today’s episode is the first with a prerequisite. Usually I have musicians on this show, and if you haven’t heard them before, no big deal. Today, however, I’m talking with Roger Hill, director of the film “Huckleberry”, and if you haven’t seen it, then you should save this episode for after you have, because we gonna spoiler. You can buy or rent Huckleberry on Amazon, or it’s free with Prime, or if you want the full movie experience, you can catch an upcoming screening of Huckleberry followed by another Q&A at the Cleveland Cinema in Shaker Square on Thursday July 18th at 7pm. Please do take the time to rate and review the film on Amazon, it really does a lot to help the visibility of smaller indie films like these. If you’re so inclined, do the same for this podcast as well, though not on Amazon. I don’t think Bezos has his filthy mitts in podcasting yet. Follow Huckleberry: Facebook Instagram
Our conversation continues with Tiffany Graham and David Wilson of LAND Studio and Wayne Mortensen of Cleveland Neighborhood Progress. Plus, we discuss clips from speakers at public meetings who feel passionately about what should — and shouldn’t — happen in Shaker Square’s future, including the possibility of closing Shaker Boulevard through the Square.
What’s the future of Shaker Square? Join planners Tiffany Graham and David Wilson of LAND Studio and Wayne Mortensen of Cleveland Neighborhood Progress as they talk about the process that’s shaping what will happen here in the future — including ideas to make the Square greener and more park-like. On this episode, we move from Shaker Square’s past… to its present. As Shaker Square opens, the 1929 stock market crash threatens its future. Then, starting in the 1950s, social changes in the neighborhoods around the Square alter who feels “welcome” there - an evolution that is still unfolding. A developer reflects on his late-1990s attempt to remake the Square as a high-end lifestyle center. Features interviews with Ludlow residents Sylvia Clayton and Shelley Stokes Hammond; Ulysses Glen, owner of the East Side Daily News; and developer Randy Ruttenberg of Fairmount Properties.

Inhabited by people for more than 13,000 years, the area that’s now Shaker Square has a strong heritage of attracting believers and dreamers. This episode explores native settlement up through the arrival (and eventual abandonment) of the area by the Shaker religious sect, which embraced celibacy and racial and gender equality. Features interviews with Dr. Brian Redmond of the Cleveland Museum of Natural History and Dr. Ware Petznick of the Shaker Historical Society.
