Mary Clare Hallman serves as the Diocesan Secretary for Parish Life in the Diocese of Scranton, bringing a wealth of experience and a deep commitment to fostering vibrant parish communities. With a background rooted in both pastoral ministry and organizational leadership, Mary Clare oversees a wide range of initiatives designed to support parish vitality, enhance liturgical and sacramental life, and strengthen ministries within the diocese. excerpt from the Diocese of Scranton website: The Catholic Church dedicates the month of October to the Holy Rosary. This year, this month takes on added significance because parishes in the Diocese of Scranton are participating in a Rosary Crusade, leading up to a large Rosary Rally that will take place on Nov. 16, 2024, at the Cathedral of Saint Peter in Scranton. The Rosary Crusade, which is now underway, will look different in each parish. Some will celebrate Mass or schedule a special Holy Hour for the intention of an increase in family prayer. Others will have parishioners gather more often to recite the rosary – or ask families to sign a pledge card to recite the rosary as a family.... The Rosary Rally planned for Nov. 16 is being held to commemorate the first Rosary Rally held by Father Patrick Peyton, C.S.C., in the United States seventy-five years ago. That 1949 rally was held in Scranton and brought together 50,000 people. Father Peyton devoted his priestly life to spreading devotion to Mary and encouraging family prayer, especially the rosary. He used radio, television, and film, and 540 Rosary Rallies worldwide to accomplish his mission. I was recently asked, "How do you share your faith without coming across as pushy?" It's a big question—how can we invite people into a relationship with Jesus without making it feel manipulative? The answer is simple: We love. The core of the Great Commission—"go and make disciples"—is the call to love because God is love. If we let that love shape and transform us, we become agents of love in our communities. This means nurturing our relationship with God first and letting that love overflow into our relationships with others. In this episode, I talk with Peter Andrastek, Senior Consultant at The Evangelical Catholic (https://evangelicalcatholic.org/). We explore how to share our faith through genuine connections and meaningful conversations. It's about finding a balance: reaching out with urgency, yet having the wisdom to do it gently. Join me as we dive into what it means to be a missionary disciple, sharing the love we've been given in a way that feels authentic and true. In this episode Edmund Mitchell welcomes special guest Nick Sawicki, the Associate Director of Development for the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston and a member of CAPP USA, the American branch of a Vatican foundation that promotes Catholic social teaching. Nick brings a wealth of experience to the conversation, including his work with America's Catholic social teaching initiatives and his legal background from Fordham University.Show Notes:(00:00) The episode begins with Nick's background and his deep connection with Catholic social teaching, rooted in his experiences at his home parish, which was led by the inspiring figure: Venerable Nelson Baker. Nick recounts how Father Baker's life and work in the "City of Charity" in Buffalo left a profound impact on him, shaping his understanding of faith in action. Nick discusses how Father Baker's dedication to serving the poor and needy during the Great Depression exemplifies the true spirit of Catholic social teaching.(10:18)  In this section of the podcast, Nick and Edmund discuss the multifaceted nature of poverty, emphasizing that beyond material poverty, the Church also recognizes moral and spiritual poverty. They explore the significance of Catholic social teaching, particularly how the Seventh Commandment ("Thou shall not steal") extends beyond just avoiding theft. Nick highlights the Church's teachings on the universal destination of goods, the tension between private property rights, and the common good. The discussion also touches on the complexities of economic systems and the moral foundations necessary for true human dignity and justice.(15:58)  In this segment, Edmund and Nick discuss the importance of understanding the Church's teachings on private property and its deeper spiritual significance. Edmund shares a personal story about his children and their attachment to belongings, which sparks a conversation about the dignity and fulfillment that come from owning property. Nick explains that while private property is important, it must be balanced with the Church's teachings on the universal destination of goods, ensuring that possessions serve the common good. The discussion also highlights the role of Catholic social teaching in guiding how we relate to and use our material possessions.(25:24)  In this closing segment, Edmund and Nick discuss how Pope Francis emphasizes Catholic social teaching through his actions and decisions, sparking conversations about living a life aligned with the Gospel. Nick shares practical ways to cultivate a healthier relationship with material goods, like using the Jesuit practice of the Examen to reflect on motivations behind purchases. They also discuss the dangers of consumerism, which can distract from spiritual growth. Nick encourages listeners to explore Catholic social teaching further by visiting cappusa.com, which offers valuable resources for understanding and applying these principles in daily life.An OSV Podcasts partner. We must understand that anything we do for Church is not doing God a favor. God needs nothing and has no favoritism--He has given the Church for our benefit as a gift for us to properly take care of. Again, Church membership is about one thing and one thing only, and that is building our relationship with God in the Church that He gave us as a gift. We are to give freely and with the attitude that we are only doing our duty, and that all that we do cannot possibly be a return for what God has given us, and therefore are to be cheerful and thankful in what we do and give (Luke 17.10).

From there, Father continued falling more and more in love with Jesus, and he kept responding “yes” – even if it meant bailing on dates with his girlfriend. His witness is a great example that there is no such thing as wasted time when we prioritize our prayer lives. Father Josh is a pastor who truly desires to lead by example. John Dudek was previously married, and has two daughters. After an annulment, he entered seminary and has been assigned to Divine Child parish for two years, serving the school and the parish. He was recently asked by Archbishop Vigneron to transfer to St. Regis Parish. They discuss Fr. John's time at Pope St. John XXIII National Seminary in Boston, a school for “late in life vocations” to the priesthood. (25:15) After 26 years as a teacher, when Fr. John entered seminary, he believed he would never be back in the school system. “Those days are behind me.” He was surprised to feel joy at being stationed at a parish with an elementary school and realized that “God uses everything.” During his time in seminary, he felt the Lord telling him when he stood at the altar, “This is your new classroom.” They discuss Camp Sancta Maria, a Catholic summer camp Fr. John attended in 8th grade and returned to this summer as the priest chaplain. (31:27) Living a time of lasts: the three priests reflect on the reality of being moved to new assignments and living in obedience to the Archbishop. They talk about living close to God's heart as they leave behind communities they've poured themselves into, projects they've started, and relationships they formed. They share stories of simple or practical mistakes they've made during sacraments or Mass. They share a conversation about community life and sharing a rectory at Divine Child. The episode ends with Fr. David Pellican sharing about what his life will look like in Rome, living arrangements, studies, and wisdom from priests friends. (56:05) A word of encouragement: “You go off to the seminary wandering if you're worthy to serve as a priest. And then you're ordained, and you realize you're an instrument God is using to help His people. It's humbling and it's beautiful.” Fr. John shares, “If you've ever thought or wondered what it would be like to be a priest, you need to reach out to Fr. Craig, the vocations director.”

Julianne shares her extensive knowledge on discipleship and how she sees the role of the Catechism within the life of a missionary disciple. Get to know her story, how her relationship with the Catechism changed over time, and how the Church defines the two dimensions of the Catechism itself. (00:37) Julianne Stanz, a nationally known speaker, retreat leader, storyteller, the Director of Parish Life and Discipleship in Diocese of Green Bay and a consultant to the USCCB Committee on Catechesis and Evangelization is welcomed onto this episode of the Real+True podcast. She is the author of Braving the Thin Places, Start with Jesus: How Everyday Disciples Will Renew the Church, Developing Disciples of Christ, and co-author of The Catechist's Backpack.  (4:40) What is missionary discipleship? Julianne shares, “You hear good news every single time you go to Mass, the Gospel of the Lord.” And that our relationship with good news will change how we share it. Do we see it as good? Edmund shares that the context of being on a mission trip prompts him to behave differently — including being much more open to the Holy Spirit, and to pray with people on the spot. But once he returned home, he saw that behavior left behind. Julianne shares that context is important when we're talking about missionary discipleship.  (12:48) “God does not use our ability, he blesses our availability.” Julianne encourages listeners who want to share the Gospel but aren't sure how to pray, “Lord, use me." And then pray for the opportunity for him to use you in just very concrete ways.” Edmund highlights that the Informative Dossier, a Church document which explains the Catechism in more depth, says that the Catechism is conciliar (from the Church) and missionary (for the purpose of sharing the Gospel.) Julianne shares, “When you receive the Eucharist, you become a tabernacle with feet,” highlighting the reality that our lives as missionary disciples are extensions of our relationship with Jesus.  (21:35) “What has your experience of the Catechism been?” Julianne shares about her conversion and encountering the Catechism as a 17-year-old student in Dublin and how her relationship with the Catechism changed overtime as she saw it less of a textbook but more of an encounter with God. And this led her to her excitement when she was asked to be an Advisor for Real+True. Edmund invites Julianne to address mistakes she often sees in evangelization “Recognize the person in front of you is not somebody that is half full that you need to fill up with information. But God already dwells in the person's heart because he always precedes us.” This episode is supported by NCEA, https://www.ncea.org/NCEA2023/whyattendAn OSV Podcasts partner. DescriptionYou know the verses about love in 1 Corinthians Ch. 13? It's the reading that you always hear at weddings. St. Paul starts by saying, “...if I don't have love I am a resounding gong and a clanging cymbal.” 1 Cor 13:1bPeople speaking to Catholic audiences have a similar bar to hit - do we have love in our heart for the people God allows us to speak to? And if we don't, how can we gain that love for them? In my conversation with Julianne Stanz, a world-class Catechist, she shares how to cultivate that love, but also how that love is evidenced in and through ‘encouragement', which meant to literally ‘give heart' to another. This intentionality is so needed in our day. Story-teller, encourager and author, Julianne Stanz is the Director of Discipleship and Parish Life for the Diocese of Green Bay, Wisconsin and is a consultant to the USCCB Committee on Catechesis and Evangelization. She is the author of the books “Braving the Thin Places: Celtic Wisdom to Create a Space for Grace” and “Start with Jesus: How everyday disciples will renew the Church” published by Loyola Press.Check out Julianne's website right here: www.juliannestanz.comAnd here's an Amazon link to her latest book, “Braving the Thin Places.” Check it out!LinksFor more information about the Better Preach Podcast visit: www.ryanohara.org/betterpreachBetter Preach is a proud member of Spoke Street, a Catholic Podcast Network that amplifies the voice of the Creator through fostering content that invites.
