In honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, Kirby Gwen chatted with Dr. Cornell William Brooks and Joe Daniels about Dr. King's legacy and honoring it through our actions. Dr. Brooks is a professor at Harvard, the former president, and CEO of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), a civil rights attorney and an ordained minister. Listen as Dr. Brooks explains how Dr. King's actions were just as impactful as his words. Dr. King was a volunteer who stepped up and stepped forward. You might not have the words to be a powerful speaker, but you can step forward and work with other people like he did. This conversation reminds us that we all have a role to play toward achieving equity and fairness. To Dr. Brooks the day represents a sabbath for social justice to reflect on Dr. King's legacy, but also to build within ourselves the inspiration, hope and energy to do the work for the rest of the year. Constitutional Chats hosted by Janine Turner and Cathy Gillespie
In four years we will celebrate the biggest birthday our country has ever seen. In fact, planning for this birthday celebration began in 2016! That year, President Obama signed into law H.R. 4875, legislation which formally created the United States Semiquincentennial Commission to plan the commemoration of the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States. Constituting America co-founder Cathy Gillespie is proud to be 1 of the 16 private citizen members of the commission! Join our student panel as we welcome Joe Daniels, President and CEO of the America 250 Foundation for this discussion on how we will celebrate our country's milestone birthday in four years!
We're back after a six month break. Less chat, more music this time round. We start with a very laid back Louis Armstrong and his version of Blueberry Hill. Billie Anthony was born Philomena McGeachie Levy in Glasgow in 1932. Here she sings her biggest hit, This Ole House. There were a few covers of this record in the British charts. Rosemary Clooney made no1 but Billie Anthony made no4. She had a great voice and it's surprising that her career had just petered out by 1960. Tony Martin stirs up passions with Kiss of Fire. He had a seven decade career and was married to Alice Faye and Cyd Charisse- but not at the same time! Strict tempo dance music next. Developed to standardise dance styles strict tempo bands never had a vocalist. I suppose it could be accused of being a little souless but in this section of records its comes over as chilled and relaxing. Two from the king of strict tempo Victor Silvester. A dancer himself he, along with Josephine Bradley, was a founder member of The Imperial Society of teachers of dance. Which I have to say does sound a tad pompous! Silvester sold 70 million records in his time. Check him out below. Its a fascinating read: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Victor_Silvester Both Josephine Bradley and Henry Jasques were originally dancers. Indeed Jasques was British Ballroom champion from 1934 to 36. His 1944 book on ballroom is still a highly sort after work. Latvian born Oscar Rabin joins the strict tempo crew with Love is all. Jo Stafford had highly successful career over five decades. Opera trained her voice is very pure. She married the band leader Paul Weston and they produced alot of fine work together. They had a side project though: Jonathon and Darlene Edwards, a truly bad caberet act. Listen here, if you dare: https://youtu.be/NySAbB2JLII Some more obscure artists next. Victor Olof with Tancuf, a Slovakian dance, Harry Wulson yodelling in 1929. He produced a few such records but I cannot find a biog of him. The Accordion Emsemble were probably a Zonophone house band, here they play Espana Valise recorded in 1920. Gene Austin was extremely well known in his time. One of the first crooners he was also a fine songwriter, When My Sugar Walks Down the Street and, Forgotten Songs favourite, The Lonesome Road are just two of his compositions. Here he sings- I've grown so lonesome thinking of you. PIano duo and co bandleaders Victor Arden and Phil Ohman give us Kiddie Kapers. That leads us perfectly to two records on 45rpm. First a track that was very popular in my 1960s and 70s childhood. Sparky's talking piano. It was actually recorded in 1947 with the child actor Henry Blair voicing Sparky. The rather creepy piano's voice was created by a Sonovox voice processor. Which makes the human voice sound, well, both robotic and musical. It was invented in 1939 and had an early notable demonstration by Lucille Ball in a Pathe newsreel. We dissolve seemlessly from that to Sacha Distel singing Ich bin ein spielman. Back to 78s with with Coleman Hawkins with Half step down please. Tito Burns and his Sextet play Sloppy Joe. Burns had a career as a musician, accordian and piano, and as an impresario and manager. He discovered Dusty Springfield, managed Cliff Richard and organised the European tours of Simon and Garfunkle. We close with Joe Daniels and Drumnastics. Hope you enjoy it. Its good to be back.

和现在不同,cup 在当时指装了酒精饮料的杯子,所以用 in one's cup 来比喻沉溺于杯中物的人,意同drunk, 也可用under the table表示喝醉了。例:He was in his cups so that he completely forgot to go to his appointment. 喝酒的一些单词短语:Sober 清醒的Aperitif 开胃酒Hung over 宿醉的be on the bottle 是个酒鬼drink a toast to 为……干杯二、A cup of Joe≠一杯Joe(酒)清晨醒来,为了驱赶睡虫,a cup of Joe 是不少上班族的首选。 A cup of joe(简称 “cuppa joe”) :咖啡(coffee)Joe这个人名与咖啡是怎么扯上关系的呢? He really likes a cup of Joe and he has a cup every day. 三、My cup of tea不只是“我的一杯茶”My cup of tea 的表面意思是“我的一杯茶”。 1:You are my cup of tea. 2:The plot of this book is so attractive, it's my cup of tea. He's funny, but not my cup of tea. There's many a slip'twixt the cup and the lipThere's many a slip'twixt the cup and the lip是一句英语谚语,意为:到嘴的鸭子也会飞走(指没有十拿九稳的事,世事往往会功亏一篑)。 Twixt [twɪkst] 相当于 between,“介于…… He did not close the cage properly and all the ducks he bought ran away. There's many a slip'twixt the cup and the lip. 我们都学过,cup跟glass都可以表示“杯子”,很多人会混淆使用,但是 a cup of跟 a glass of 也有区别:1)A cup of:常指一种带柄的无脚的瓷杯,用以喝茶、牛奶、咖啡等。 I need a cup of coffee please. 1:I drank two glasses of whisky yesterday. 2:Would you like a glass of wine? She got fat because she drank 3 ( ) coke every meal.A. cups ofB. glasses of请做出你的选择并且翻译,同学们可以在右下角留言区写下你的答案哦, 老师会亲自点评~

S About the Show: We sat down with Build Community Through Love founder Dr. Joseph Daniels to learn about his new podcast and the organization that shares the same name. Dr. Daniels is on a quest to create an authentic community with anyone that will listen. He is a Civil Engineer by trade and a Preacher's son by birth. Dr. Daniels has proven that he is good at multitasking as he practices engineering by day and works to make a difference in his local community here in Northwest Arkansas and beyond at night and on the weekends. Even the pandemic has not slowed him down. Dr. Daniels recently started a podcast to share his stories and experiences and those of other people around the country trying to make a difference where they live. The primary focus of Build Community Through Love is Economic Development, Community Development, and Education. While Dr. Daniels gives equal time to everyone in the community, his focus has been on creating systems that foster equitable opportunities and access to each community member, especially those systemically, racially, and economically disenfranchised. Hear all of this and also learn how Dr. Daniels and I initially met during his quest to sit down with 100 people for coffee. Of course, not at the same time, but over a few months. It is such a unique story and one that will encourage those of us that are trying to get out of our shell and meet new people. Thought I'd share a little more insight from JFK on our official Independence Day here is the U.S., this time from his 1961 Inaugural Address. For the complete speech & video please visit the JFK LibraryWe're All In This TogetherBe a part of the solution, not the problem. Never try to fight hate & division with more hate & division, it'll never work.We are the government. Yes, you. We are the law enforcement. Again, yes, you. We are the teachers. We are the students. We are, we...not I. Not me.And now that I've begun rhyming, time to wrap it up. Special thanks to Joe Daniels for permission to use the song Bound for the Floor, by Local H as our show's theme song.I almost forgot, here's a link to Buffalo Springfield's For What It's Worth. This episode is all about the music. Some British jazz from the 1930s and 40s. Three lesser known bands that deserve more 'air time.' Harry Parry and his Radio Rhythm Club Sextet play: 'I've found a new baby', 'It don't count,' 'Parry Opus', 'Softly as in a morning sunrise' and 'Don't be that way.' Nat Gonella and 'Blues upstairs and downstairs.' Joe Daniels and his Hot Shots in Drumnastics play: 'Blues in Boogie,' 'Dancing for a dime,' Cuban Pete,' 'Drumnastics part two.'
The first of many bespoke podcast recordings to come. Its the usual eclectic mix of tunes. The mysterious Nino Rico orchestra play Rico Vacilon. Who were these fellas? Jane Forrest is another artist with no online biography. Glasgow born Tommy Watt had a long career as a band leader and arranger and is father to Ben Watt from Everything but the Girl. Joe Daniels and his Hot Shots, Winifred Atwell and The Light Crust Doughboys make another appearance. Short tributes to listeners in Virginia with Spring time in the Blue Ridge Mountains and California with The Californian Ramblers. Sadly both records are a little scratchy. Boogie Woogie Stomp from Albert Ammons, 1936. Great friend of Mead Lux Lewis, they were both taxi drivers in the 1920s. Imagine being picked up by them! Baritone Gilbert Austin sings a plaintive 'Why can't we be sweethearts.' He sang under at least 12 other names. Suzette Tarr was a cockney stage and radio star from 1930s and 40s. She sings 'Alf.' Hildegarde was born Loretta Snell in Wisconsin in 1906. She was an international cabaret star and inspired other artists such as Miss Piggy and Liberace! We end going out in to the dark beyond with the theme from the 1950s BBC radio series 'Journey into Space.' Now that is spacey.
“You get a sense of who's important, what's important, and hopefully people will realize what you had by just being able to go out and see other people, be in a room, and actually be present.” Scott Lucas is the lead singer and guitarist of Local H, an alt rock band out of Zion, Illinois — a small town about an hour north of Chicago. He and three high school friends founded the group together in 1990, but by 1993, two of them had left and Local H carried on as a duo, with Joe Daniels on drums and Scott playing a modified guitar with an added bass pickup to round out the sound. Brian St. Clair and Ryan Harding would spend stints as Local H's drummer but Scott, through thick and thin, has persisted through the whole three decades, which has seen nine studio LPs, countless shows — a few of them opening for Metallica — and the commercial breakthrough record, As Good As Dead, which is headlined by single, “Bound for the Floor,” a track that reached number five on the Billboard Modern Rock charts. We chatted about the influence of a small town identity, the power of persistence, the secret to the exact ratio of toilet paper needed per neighborhood, and Local H's new record, Lifers, which features an all-star cast, from Juliana Hatfield to John McCauley (Deer Tick) to legendary engineer, Steve Albini (Nirvana, Pixies, Joanna Newsom, Iggy Pop). It's the band's first LP since 2015 and it's excellent. On our 3 April Live Stream we spoke with Joe Daniels about his award winning shot in the DEEP Indonesia underwater photography competition.
Quite few British artists this time round. Billy Cotton celebrates The Festival of Britain in 1951. Jazz from long servicing musicians George Chisholm and Joe Daniels. George Formby sings In his little Wigan garden. No doubt its riddled with double entendre. Three unusual acts Phyllis Robins sings a real piece of Northern English social history, 'In my little bottom drawer.' All about gathering stuff together for your wedding. Phyllis was known as The sheffield Bombshell. Impressionist Florence Desmond does Jimmy Durante in her Hollywood Party. John Henry and Blossom(pictured) were a popular double in the 1920s and 30s. Made people laugh but theirs is a sorry tale. There's more of course, including Western Swing

Concept albums are as old as albums themselves, though defining what exactly qualifies as a concept album is flexible. The 90s were no different, as many bands and artists took loose ideas and strung together narratives and themes to form a cohesive idea. Of all the bands you were probably expecting to do so back in day, Local H was probably not high on that list, but songwriter/guitarist/singer Scott Lucas has dipped into the concept album well often during the past several decades, first with their 1996 break-through As Good As Dead, and then the 1998 follow-up Pack Up The Cats. Lucas and drummer Joe Daniels weave a tale not unfamiliar to rock fans - the rise and fall of a musician, but with the decade specific twists and turns that make it a uniquely 90s affair, both lyrically and sonically, and craft a concept album worthy of the decades medium of choice: the compact disc.
