A marathon legislative session this week in Columbus produced several measures that we'll be unpacking here to begin the show. We start with what didn't get done: new rules for data centers. That legislation went off the rails over tax abatement. Data centers currently receive a 100% sales tax exemption. Proposed legislation would have reduced that tax break to between 50% and 75%. But many lawmakers, responding to concerns from constituents, say the industry should receive no exemption at all. Property tax relief remains a priority for Ohioans and lawmakers took action during their marathon session to provide help qualifying senior and disabled homeowners. More than 700,000 Homestead Exemption recipients will receive a nearly $500 credit toward their tax bill in January. Voters will decide whether to put photo-identification requirements for in-person voters – already a law in Ohio – into the constitution after lawmakers approved a constitutional amendment for the fall ballot. In a separate measure lawmakers sent to the governor a bill that extends voter ID to those casting votes by absentee/mail-in ballot. Ohio Republicans who say they are concerned about fraud in Medicaid in Ohio passed new regulations but first stripped out a provision that would have denied funding for those who care for sick family members. That provision had sparked spirited protests at the Statehouse. The Cleveland Clinic agreed to a deal with the Department of Justice this week that will end gender-affirming care for minors for at least the next 20 years. Prompted by an investigation into billing irregularities for such care, the agreement would remain in effect even if the current state law prohibiting gender-affirming care would be overturned. The MetroHealth System will not seek recertification of its Level 2 pediatric trauma center in 2027, though it will still treat children through its broader Level 1 trauma center for adults which also can treat minors. It will transfer pediatric cases to University Hospitals, which runs the region's only Level 1 pediatric trauma center, saying it's better for the broader system not to duplicate efforts. We will discuss these topics and the rest of the week's news on the “Sound of Ideas Reporters Roundtable.” Guests:- Abbey Marshall, Local Government Reporter, Ideastream Public Media- Conor Morris, Education Reporter, Ideastream Public Media- Karen Kasler, Bureau Chief, Ideastream Statehouse News Bureau
Ohio Republicans redrew the 1st Congressional District to make it harder for a Democrat to hold, and now one of the most watched U.S. House races in the state is set: two-term incumbent Greg Landsman against Trump-endorsed newcomer Eric Conroy. In this solo episode of Purple Political Breakdown Ohio Edition, host Radell Lewis breaks down who these two men actually are and what their platforms would mean for the people of Ohio's 1st. On Landsman: the former public school teacher and Cincinnati councilman who flipped the seat in 2022, his anti-establishment economic populism and the ten-bill "Pledge to America" from his November 2025 manifesto The Great American Comeback, signature bills like the No Harm Data Centers Act and his push to stop an AI-driven Medicare prior-authorization program, and the Gaza and stock-disclosure criticisms he will have to answer. On Conroy: the Air Force and CIA veteran running on border security, energy independence, and a Trump-aligned agenda, where he lands on national defense, public safety, Social Security, veterans, and crypto, and the open question of whether a first-time candidate is more MAGA-aligned than this district really is. Plus Statehouse Watch: Governor DeWine's pause on Ohio's runaway data-center sales-tax exemption (a 1.6 billion dollar hit in 2025, eleven times the original estimate), the Ohio Supreme Court ruling that makes public records harder to pry loose from Attorney General Dave Yost's office, and the court vacating the permit for the 6,000 acre Oak Run Solar project. County of the Week is Hamilton County, anchored by Cincinnati and Mayor Aftab Pureval, who once ran for this very seat. Of course there is corruption in US politics that some call campaign contributions but President Trump and family have said "hold our beer" with the just the latest being a slush fund to pay off people who attacked the capitol in 2021.There have been corrupt presidents in the past - Harding and Nixon come to mind but nothing like the scale of the Trump family - there doesn't seem to be any policy or action they can't profit from.Other stories in the episode include Ohio Republicans' effort to place a photo ID requirement into the state constitution. The proposal copies existing Ohio law but we note the added language that could make early voting harder or impossible by limiting voting to in-person voting on Election Day.Ohio Senate President Rob McColley who is running on a ticket with Vivek Ramaswamy for Ohio Governor, personally removed a child marriage ban from the Senate Judiciary committee so it couldn't be voted to the Senate floor. It was a bi-partisan bill with no public opposition before McColley stuck his nose in for no apparent reason. For a party that runs on "protecting children" it is a bad look for the Ohio GOP and Ramaswamy.Full Show Notes & Links UsedSend us Fan MailSupport the showSubscribe to our free newsletterCheck out our MerchFollow us on BlueskyFind us on Twitter(for now) Find us on InstagramFind us on Counter SocialFind us on Mastadon

Stay connected with us at americangroundradio.com, on Facebook, and Instagram. You're listening to American Ground Radio with Louis R. Avallone and Stephen Parr. This is the full show for May 6, 2026. We open with a story that perfectly illustrates the logical endpoint of socialist thinking in American cities — a Chicago alderman is calling for criminal charges against Walgreens for closing a store in a high-crime neighborhood. The charge? First degree corporate abandonment. We walk through why this is economically illiterate, morally backwards, and philosophically revealing — because when you criminalize a business for leaving a neighborhood your own policies made unlivable, you have officially crossed from governance into something else entirely. We trace the same pattern from San Francisco to Seattle to Portland, explain why crime causes poverty and not the other way around, and ask the most basic question in economics — if you want businesses to stay, why are you making it impossible for them to survive? In our Top 3 Things You Need to Know, Vivek Ramaswamy won the Ohio Republican gubernatorial primary with 83% of the vote, carrying every single county in the state — after the mainstream media spent months calling him a clown who couldn't win. Then the FBI raided the offices, marijuana dispensaries, and home of Virginia state Senate President Pro Tem Louise Lucas — one of the key architects of Virginia's redistricting effort — with a SWAT team, arresting multiple people. No specific charges were announced, but between the marijuana businesses, the redistricting allegations, and what appears to be a home health company, there may be a lot of smoke and a lot of fire. And in Indiana, five of the seven state senators who defied President Trump on redistricting and voted with Democrats to block new maps were voted out of office in Republican primaries — bringing Trump's primary endorsement record to approximately 95%. Our American Mamas Teri Netterville and Kimberly Burleson tackle the question of how much you actually share with your closest friends — and whether oversharing is a nervous habit, a trust issue, or just the way some people are wired. We get into the viral Barstool video of two former best friends publicly airing each other's secrets in real time, why the person who spills becomes the pariah even when she was wronged, why Teri's advice to her children is to keep secrets between themselves and God, and why the vault of true friendship should never have a combination that changes with the weather. We get Speaker of the House Mike Johnson on the phone for an extended conversation covering some of the most significant legislative accomplishments of the current Congress. Johnson explains why getting all 12 appropriations bills passed in regular order — something that hadn't been done in years — is a bigger deal than most Americans realize, why the Christmas omnibus had become a bipartisan racket that nobody read and everybody funded, and how they're already starting the process again for next fiscal year. He also covers the Farm Bill, the border security and ICE funding reconciliation package that will fund those agencies for the next three years without a single Democratic vote, and the proposed rebranding of ICE to National Immigration Customs Enforcement — so the other side would have to say they want to defund NICE. We also dig into Ilhan Omar's connection to the $250 million Minnesota COVID-era childcare and meal fraud scheme — specifically that a Minnesota House committee gave her office until May 5th to turn over documents and communications related to the nonprofits whose emails her office appears in repeatedly. May 5th passed. She turned over nothing. We also get into the data center construction boom happening across America — and why AOC, Bernie Sanders, and the left are suddenly opposed to building the infrastructure America needs to beat China in the artificial intelligence race. We explain why losing the AI race to China isn't just an economic setback — it's a civilizational one. For our Bright Spot, Max Davis lost his brother Beck to suicide on May 10th, 2023. He started a nonprofit called the Beck Davis Survivors of Loss Foundation and is now running a full marathon — 327 laps around the Washington Monument — to raise money for families dealing with grief. He's calling it the Washington Monument-a-thon, and people who've never met are showing up to run with him. His message to people who are struggling: think about all the people who are really out there and really do care about you. And we close with the life of Ted Turner — who inherited his father's billboard company at 24, parlayed it into radio stations, traded those for a small Atlanta TV station, turned that into the first cable superstation, and then built CNN, the first 24-hour cable news network. Ted Turner passed away today at the age of 87. May your pursuit of happiness bring you joy. Before Ohio holds its primary, the presumptuous GOP candidate for Governor Vivek Ramaswamy is running a negative ad against the presumptive Democrat candidate Dr. Amy Acton. Ramaswamy's ad attempts to gaslight voters about Acton's role as the Director of the Ohio Department of Health at the start of the COVID pandemic in 2020. The ad falsely claims Acton acted outside her authority to postpone the March 2020 primary election. Ohio Republicans have been wanting voters to forget the truth of their inaction during the pandemic and undermining the state's response for political reasons since 2020.We look at Ohio Representative Josh Williams who is the only black Republican in the Ohio House and he is running for Congress in Ohio's 9th District. He claims DEI and affirmative action keep the Black community stuck in poverty and he vocally supports anti-abortion stances, often echoing sentiments that appeal to a predominantly white anti-abortionist base like repeating the false and harmful narrative of abortion as a form of genocide within the Black community. Williams should be the last person holding negative views about policies and programs that give a hand up out of poverty since he himself needed and used that help when he was bed ridden for six years and had no high school diploma yet is now a lawyer and teaches law at a local college while serving as a state representative. Finally we look at the fight between President Trump and the Pope. It is particularly striking that figures like Trump and JD Vance, especially Vance's recent conversion to Catholicism, feel emboldened to critique religious authorities, including the Pope, on theological grounds that contradict their own political alignments. This speaks to a broader trend of politicization of religion where moral authority is wielded selectively. We see that politicization in every level of government from the local to the federal. It is a trend that needs to be stopped.Full Show Notes & Links UsedSend us Fan MailSupport the showSubscribe to our free newsletterCheck out our MerchFollow us on BlueskyFind us on Twitter(for now) Find us on InstagramFind us on Counter SocialFind us on Mastadon
Host Radell Lewis breaks down Ohio's 2026 State Auditor race between Republican Frank LaRose, Democrat Annette Blackwell, and Libertarian write-in Aidan Jeffery, then runs through a wild week of Ohio political news on Purple Political Breakdown. This episode covers why the Auditor's office matters (hint: it's the only statewide office with the power to catch public officials misusing your tax dollars), how current Auditor Keith Faber's run for Attorney General is part of what reporters are calling a "musical chairs" pattern among term-limited Ohio Republicans, and whether LaRose's Secretary of State record (including the 2023 Issue 1 reversal, a Hatch Act complaint, and 1,200 alleged voter fraud cases referred to the DOJ in late 2025) matches the job description of Ohio's chief accountability officer. On the other side of the aisle, Maple Heights Mayor Annette Blackwell pitches 16 years of accounting experience and a documented fiscal turnaround that won the Auditor's own Clean Audit Award three years running. In the news roundup: Ohio quietly adds "Trump Wildlife Area" as an official name through administrative rule, podcaster Myron Gaines performs a Sieg Heil salute on the steps of Ohio University's Memorial Auditorium in the first real test of Senate Bill 1, Columbus restaurant La Chatelaine cancels a Casey Putsch fundraiser over his comments about Hitler and Nazis, Governor Mike DeWine honors his late father's role liberating Dachau, a 2019 Bexley police report resurfaces on Democratic gubernatorial candidate Amy Acton, Signal Ohio reporter Jake Zuckerman exposes Ohio nursing homes dumping medically fragile patients at homeless shelters, and a DraftKings-linked super PAC places over $1.1 million in ads backing Ohio Republican legislative primary candidates. Back in the Speakeasy and this one goes completely off the rails in the best way possible. The Seattle Mariners tried to honor Ichiro Suzuki, and the statue immediately had a broken bat situation. You had one job. Then MLB somehow outdid itself with replay chaos: challenge an overturned call, just to end up with the original call anyway. John Smoltz went full OWG about ABS, and now umpires are even starting to chirp back. We also dive into: • A full-blown Cincinnati Reds bobblehead conspiracy • Why the NBA playoffs feel like they last 6 months • The 65-game rule screwing over Luka Dončić and a bunch of other guys • The greatest anti-tanking idea ever: beer prices tied to wins and losses • A Charlotte restaurant taking shots at Michael Jordan • The internet losing its mind over Dianna Russini and Mike Vrabel in a hot tub • Rory McIlroy going back-to-back at The Masters • MFer of the Week: FIFA banning tailgates vs Ohio trying to gut sports gambling Plus beer recaps, random yard work talk, and whatever else spiraled out of control.

Last November, there were a number of historic wins across the country in the general election, including two women elected governors in New Jersey and Virginia bringing the total of women leading states in the U.S. at the same time to 14, a record high. Other historic wins included the first Muslim woman elected to statewide office in the U.S. in Virginia, the first Muslim elected mayor in New York City, and the first woman elected mayor of Detroit. All of those were wins for the Democratic party. This year, Ohio has the chance to make history with the two major candidates running for Ohio governor from both parties. On the Republican side, the leading candidate who has already been endorsed by the Ohio Republican party and President Donald Trump, is entrepreneur and former presidential candidate, Vivek Ramaswamy. He would be the first governor of Indian descent and Hindu faith in Ohio if elected. On the Democratic side, the only candidate on the primary ballot is Dr. Amy Acton, a physician who served as the former state health director. She would be the first woman elected governor and person of Jewish faith in Ohio if she won. Late last year, we had conversations with both candidates, and we thought as the primary approaches, we would reshare those conversations on Tuesday's "Sound of Ideas." Military and overseas absentee voting begins on March 20, with early in person voting starting April 7. Guests: - Dr. Amy Acton, M.D., Democratic candidate for Ohio governor - Vivek Ramaswamy, Republican candidate for Ohio governor

NPR's "Books We Love" list for 2025 Each year, NPR staff help assemble their "Books We Love" list, offering more than 350 reading suggestions for all kinds of interests. The thought of parsing through that many recommendations might seem intimidating, but it's more manageable than you might think, because the list is divided into categories based on specific topics like "Historical Fiction," "Mysteries and Thrillers," "For Art Lovers," "Science!" and "It's All Geek To Me," to name a few. Monday on the "Sound of Ideas," Ideastream Public Media's Coordinating Producer Drew Maziasz and NPR Arts Desk Reporter Andrew Limbong share a few selections from the 2025 list, for the avid reader looking for their next paperback, hardcover, digital read or audio book. Guests:- Drew Maziasz, "Sound of Ideas" Coordinating Producer- Andrew Limbong, NPR Arts Desk Reporter Vivek Ramaswamy shares top priorities if elected Ohio governor The two major political parties won't elect their candidates to run for Ohio governor until May 2026, but both the Ohio Republican party and President Donald Trump have already endorsed Vivek Ramaswamy in the race. 00:00:00 – Tech gremlins, show finally goes live, and Mike defends OBDM's mix of silliness and niche stories against "cover important news" commenters. 00:04:09 – Alex Jones Clips of the Week: AI-mangled transcripts, goofy soundboard noises, French hit-squad rumors around Candace Owens, and dreams of a 24/7 Jones megamix stream. 00:13:50 – Deep dive into Tim Pool "crashing out" on-air over security, alleged drive-by shots at his house, his feud with Candace Owens, and whether the meltdown is genuine or radio-war kayfabe. 00:18:14 – Article walk-through on leaked China–Taiwan war games: hypersonic missiles, US carriers and F-35s getting wiped, Pentagon overspending on complex gear, and CFR scenarios where America basically backs away from Taiwan. 00:28:02 – Gaming out a Taiwan invasion: chip-fab self-destruct plans, Taiwan striking Chinese dams and industry, how fast things could go nuclear, and a long "china china china" Trump soundboard riff. 00:37:48 – Russia and China run joint bomber patrols near Japan; hosts frame it as ominous saber-rattling that conveniently justifies even more Western military spending. 00:42:49 – Reason/Atlantic story on elite university students claiming disabilities: explosion of ADHD/anxiety accommodations, TikTok-diagnosed "neurodivergence," and how grifted extra time hurts students with real needs. 00:52:13 – Rapid-fire: Trump UFO/Roswell betting-market hype, speculation he's been "talked to" about disclosure, Ohio Republicans endlessly re-tweaking the voter-approved weed law, and a tease for an AI-generated police suspect image. 00:57:09 – AI-generated mugshot of a Phoenix shooting suspect that looks eerily like Tim Pool; worries about lazy prompt-based "sketches," misidentification, and cops arresting whoever matches the AI face. 01:06:10 – COVID, vaccines, and excess-death anger: UK data allegedly withheld, false-positive PCR testing, "turbo cancer" anecdotes, and a long rant (plus influencer clip) about total lack of accountability for mandates and pharma. 01:10:57 – Marco Rubio orders State to ditch Calibri; typography nerd-out on why serif fonts suit long documents, plus a heartfelt status update on Joe's recovery, bike-accident aftereffects, and the door being open for his return. 01:15:54 – Spanish delivery worker fired for repeatedly clocking in too early; court calls it "serious misconduct," prompting horror stories about hyper-strict time clocks and quitting over minute-by-minute overtime policing. 01:24:45 – Trump "no tax on tips" meets OnlyFans: IRS agents theoretically forced to watch spicy content to classify incomes, porn vs lifestyle creators, and jokes about this mess landing in the Supreme Court's lap. 01:34:30 – Red "jellyfish" sprite lightning above storms: NASA's high-altitude discharge explanation versus the show's playful theories about alien biology, portals, or off-gassing mystery tech. 01:39:34 – Trump bumping an Air Force One bathroom door mid-press gaggle, imagined awkwardness for whoever's inside, then a UK saga where a council paints a disabled bay around a parked car and slaps it with tickets. 01:47:48 – Florida man claims he teleported into a stolen BMW before a 140-mph crash; hosts compare it to real teleport/time-slip lore, pitch better "I'm from the year 5000" alibis, and suggest cops should ticket illegal teleporting. 01:55:58 – In-N-Out bans order number 67 (after 69) to stop meme-yelling kids, audio-leveller gremlins creep into the show, and they close with Patreon/Discord plugs, schedule notes, Joe shout-outs, and one last "watch the sky for sprite lightning" sign-off. It's Memorial Day, so Greg & I are having a BBQ breakfast, and knocking off for the day. But I thought you might like a little something to play in the background, if you're grilling breakfast, too. How about something from back when That F-ing Guy was The Former Guy, and a criminal defendant, to boot? Here's how things looked last year, at about this time: David Waldman has had enough grilling and hammocking, back to the microphone! Closing arguments have begun in the People of New York vs. Orange J. Turd, and well, he might not be as easy to flush as one would think standing outside the stall. Once reelected, fake electors plan to fake elections better. The Washington Post buried the Alito upside-down flag story for three years, because who doesn't signal international distress when attacked by passive-aggressive lawn signs? Martha-Ann Alito ran a “novelty flag” up the pole to show reporters she wasn't one to trifle with. Who knows what novelty flag she chose, it would depend on which county fair she bought it at. None of that explains the Alito Pine-Sol® flag at their beach home. In order to understand that, and the fast growing New Apostolic Reformation Christain Nationalist movement, you need not just one, but two comprehensive guides on hand. The Texas GOP platform calls for the Bible in schools, and for Texas dirt to have more of a vote than urban Blacks. Not a great time to be stricken by a nasty cold, but that's among the many unfortunate turns we've been dealt this week! But we haven't been carted away in irons just yet. We'll be back on Monday. But until then, it's another time-travel episode. As usual, the theme is “this time last year.” Because “what it was like last time we did this” was just too much. A year ago today... The collective sigh of relief here at KITM World Headquarters probably delayed our first local snowfall by weeks. Host David Waldman and Guest Star Greg Dworkin are here today to do whatever the opposite is of “fret” … (We might not have a word for that.) We won. That is, we the people of the United States who care about democracy and what not. Dems romped, Gops flopped, pretty much everywhere, notably in Ohio, as voters knew Republican gaslighting by heart after seeing it being used to failure in state after state before them. Freedom and liberty continue to reign as the Buckeye State turns a new leaf. Ohio Republicans pledge to continue to fight freedom, liberty and the rights of individuals until their last breaths. Virginia won big by helping Glenn Youngkin lose big. Loudoun County of course did their state proud. Even Pennsylvania triumphed and extended their Democratic majority. Pundits wonder if all this winning should worry Joe Biden and embolden Donald Trump, and someone continues to pay them. Someone keeps paying House Republicans also, including even Marjorie Traitor Greene. At least Marge is out there proposing some staff cuts. Republicans understand that the biggest obstacle to their governing would be democracy, and no one is more behind that idea than Donald Trump. George Stephanopoulos would like to know where people stand on this before his interviews. Hey, now that you're in a good mood, isn't it a great time to consider donating to one or more grassroots campaigns as we head into the Big One next November?
Ohio Republican candidate for Senate Bernie Moreno joins John Solomon and Amanda Head for a special report revisiting the train derailment in East Palestine, Ohio. “The federal response has been wholly inadequate,” Moreno said. He also weighed in on the upcoming election, saying, “if we can have an overwhelming victory, we can do great things in this country.” Additional interviews with Nelson Mcilveen and Leaha Thomas.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
Argentina was practically defined by brutal state-led terror from the mid-1970s to early 1980s, but has also modeled the healing work of delivering accountability. Howard LaFranchi investigates the question of whether Argentina's narrative is now being given added nuance, or if it's facing an assault on truth. Also in today's package, we cover an Ohio Republican's fight for reforming voting districts, Philippines “separation inequality”, and the role of young voters in this year's election.
