On this episode of Unsupervised Learning, friend of the podcast, Charles Murray returns to chat with Razib again. Murray has been a public intellectual and scholar since the 1970's. He is the author of Losing Ground, The Bell Curve, Human Accomplishment, Real Education, Coming Apart and What it means to be a libertarian and Human Diversity, among others. Born in 1943 in Newton, Iowa, Murray has a BA from Harvard, an MA and PhD from MIT, and did a 1960's stint in the Peace Corps in Thailand. He has held positions at the American Institutions for Research, the Manhattan Institute and the American Enterprise Institute. More than four years after their last conversation, and seven years after his official retirement, Murray reflects with Razib on where he sees America going in the next decade, and what has surprised him about the last 25 years. Razib asks what it is like to be a long-standing “Never Trump conservative” and a libertarian in Trump's populist America. They also discuss the end of the “awokening” that began in the mid-2010s, and whether Murray's long exile from notice and acknowledgement from mainstream opinion-leaders and tastemakers is at an end. Murray also addresses the ideological fractures he sees on the right, and how America will deal with the last generation of mass immigration that has altered the US' demographic balance. They also discuss how taboo it still is to talk about group differences in cognitive performance, and whether America will be able to face the reality of demographics and the social consequences thereof in the 21st century.

The last chapter of the book of Jeremiah fails to give us a fairy-tale, happy ending, but it does give us a hopeful one. In spite of all the challenges the nation faced, God's promise of a future deliverer was still intact. Let's turn our attention to Pastor Brian for the final message from our series through the book of Jeremiah. The title of today's message is “The Mighty Have Fallen.
Not a good public relations week for TUSD. On the heels of a report about a huge penalty they paid for reporting inaccurate attendance numbers to the state, an internal audit shows nothing has improved and former teacher blows the whistle. Then, two teachers go public on abuse of the TUSD's credit recovery program. A parent fed up with inaction of homeless drug addicts invading her kid's daycare, capped off by a man exposing himself to kids through a window, goes to address Tucson's Mayor and Council at call to the public.
Jeremiah was appointed a prophet to the nations. Though he spent a large portion of his ministry preaching to the people of Judah, he did not forget his calling to the nations. The book bearing the prophet's name ends with divine words of warning mingled with the promise of future salvation. Now, let's turn our attention to Pastor Brian for this week's sermon entitled, “Table of Nations” from Jeremiah chapter 46 through 51.
Jeremiah, chapter 44, contains the last written words of the prophet Jeremiah. Unsurprisingly, it doesn't contain a lot of good news. When the Remnant of Jerusalem fled to Egypt, they ignored God's clear commands. Sadly, that isn't the last time they would ignore the divine decree. Caught up in rampant idolatry, specifically worshiping a goddess known as the Queen of Heaven, the Remnant must choose who they will serve. Sadly, they make the wrong choice. Now, let's turn our attention to Pastor Brian for this week's sermon entitled "The Queen of our Hearts."

How often do we ask God to bless our bad decisions? We might never say it that way, but we're all guilty of heading down the wrong path and looking for God to bail us out when problems begin to develop. The remnant of Judah made this mistake - but it had disastrous consequences. In this week's sermon from Jeremiah chapters 41 and 42, Pastor Brian challenges us to rethink those plans. Let's turn our attention to this week's sermon entitled "Do Not Pass Go."
When everything is stripped away, what remains? It turns out that God always preserves a faithful remnant. Even though we find ourselves in an increasingly godless generation, we can rejoice to be part of that faithful remnant for today's culture. However, even as a remnant, there are important lessons to remember. Let's turn our attention to Pastor Brian for this week's sermon from Jeremiah chapters 40 and 41, entitled "All that Remains."
You'll never outrun the holiness of God. Jeremiah 39 is a sobering and terrifying reminder of the fury of the wrath of God. However, even in the middle of a tragic story of judgment, God's grace is evident for those who follow him. Let's turn our attention to Pastor Brian for this week's sermon entitled “All the King's Men.”

In the 37th and 38th chapters of Jeremiah, the prophet found himself in a very dark place - both literally and metaphorically. His service to the LORD ended up making him some high-profile enemies. They attempted to end his life, but God delivered him through the darkness and teaches us some important lessons along the way. Let's turn our attention to this week's sermon from Pastor Brian entitled "Stuck in the Mud."
The show starts with the sad news of Bob Newhart passing away. Milwaukee Talk Show Host Dan O'Donnell joins the show to talk about Trump's speech at tonight's GOP Convention and more.
The prophet Jeremiah may be the first victim of cancel culture. After taking a year to write down all of the words God had spoken to him, the King of Judah burned them a paragraph at a time. Jeremiah 36 reminds us that no matter how hard they may try, nobody can cancel God. Now, let's turn our attention to Pastor Brian for this morning's sermon entitled, "Cancelled."
There are many lessons to be learned from the various people and groups throughout scripture, but beyond the “dos” and “don'ts”, we find a clear truth echoing from Genesis to Revelation: God speaks and expects His people to listen and obey. Those who listen and obey can take comfort in the promises of God, but those who disregard and disobey should heed the warnings of God. Let's turn our attention to Pastor Jacob for this week's sermon entitled, Promise Keepers.
Slavery is a complicated subject in the Bible. But one thing is not complicated: the bible uses the image of slavery to communicate our bondage to sin. Thankfully, in Christ, we have been emancipated from our bondage to sin. Jeremiah 34 tells the story of a king who failed to grasp his responsibility to those enslaved under his reign. But more than that, this chapter points us to Romans 6 and asks us to consider whether we will live in bondage or in freedom. Let's turn our attention to Pastor Brian for this week's sermon entitled, "For ALL."
Sinners gonna sin. But what makes someone a sinner? This morning, the prophet Jeremiah helps us understand the concept of Original Sin. While it is a universal condition, God has provided a solution. Let's turn our attention to Pastor Brian for this week's sermon from Jeremiah, chapter 33, entitled "The O.G."

In what may be one of the worst real estate transactions in history, the prophet Jeremiah is told to purchase a field from his cousin. Though he would never set foot on the property, the land would serve as an object lesson that would remind a future generation about God's faithfulness. This week's sermon is all about LOCATION LOCATION LOCATION! Now, let's turn our attention to Pastor Brian for this week's sermon from Jeremiah, chapter 32.
Jeremiah's prophecy of the New Covenant is one of the clearest signs pointing to the impact of the Gospel. In today's sermon, Pastor Brian takes a closer look at this critical text to help us understand how the New Covenant fits in with God's ultimate story of redemption. Now, let's turn our attention to this week's message entitled, "Older isn't Always Better" from Jeremiah, chapter 31.
Much of the prophecy in the Old Testament has layers of fulfillment. Jeremiah's words are certainly no exception. In Jeremiah, chapter 31, the prophet points to the hope of God's people being restored from their Babylonian exile. However, we recognize that there's an even greater fulfillment to his words when Christ returns. In today's sermon, entitled "Urban Renewal," we take a look at the hope that all of God's people have when God makes all things new. Let's join Pastor Brian with today's sermon from Jeremiah, chapter 31.
Jeremiah's Book of Consolation begins in chapter thirty. In the next few chapters, the prophet points to the hope that is found in God's future promises. Today, we consider how this hope is secured. Let's turn our attention to Pastor Brian for today's message entitled, “Hope Restored.”
Jeremiah's calling required him to live a life that was very much counter to the prevailing winds of his culture. The church today has a very different calling than Jeremiah, but there is still the expectation that we would not conform to this world. Christians ought to be outcasts and misfits as they seek to honor the Lord in this post-Christian world. Let's join Pastor Brian as he preaches from Jeremiah chapter 16.
It isn't uncommon to find Jeremiah 29:11 scribbled on a graduation card. Unfortunately, Jeremiah's most famous verse is far better suited for Mother's Day than it is for graduation. Today, we explore how to contend for the faith of our children and grandchildren in a sermon entitled "Making Plans." Now, let's turn our attention to Pastor Brian for today's message from Jeremiah chapter 29, verses 10 through 14.

We find ourselves occupying a land that seems to grow increasingly familiar with each passing day. While it may be tempting to distance ourselves from this strange land, we actually find wise counsel from Jeremiah. The church today should seek the good of her community as a presence for good. Today, we consider how to be a blessing in a very strange land.
The Prophet Jeremiah was met with bold opposition from a man named Hananiah. Hananiah grew weary of Jeremiah's doom and gloom and decided to preach a very different message. There was only one problem: nothing he said was true. We live in a world with many competing messages. Christians today would be wise to consider the source of truth and guard our hearts against those things that cloud our understanding of the facts. Let's turn our attention to Pastor Brian as he shares this week's sermon from Jeremiah chapter 28, entitled, "The Land of Make Believe."
A conspiracy to rebel against the ruler? That sounds like the plot of a modern thriller, but in this case, it was the story told in Jeremiah 27. Through the prophet, God warned the people that they were on the verge of disaster if they followed through with their rebellion. In this week's sermon, Pastor Brian takes a look at this conspiracy and reminds us that there is no authority except that which comes from the Lord. Let's turn our attention to this week's sermon entitled "A Divine Lapdog."
Jeremiah's people added sabbath-breaking to their long list of offenses. Of course, God gave them the opportunity to repent from this sin, just like all the rest. Christians often struggle with understanding and applying the sabbath. This week, we hope to understand how Christians can honor the sabbath in a uniquely Christ-honoring way.
In this episode, we look back at the coming together of the Military coalition on the ground and the man who would command it, General Norman Schwarzkopf. It would be a coalition made up of 42 countries, and troops from around the world. They would all come together on the ground in Saudi Arabia to prepare for the possible War to come. We will look at the command structure of the coalition and see just how complicated an endeavor this really was for Bush to put together. We will listen to a 60 Minutes profile from CBS News of the General who would run the operation on the ground in Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Iraq. It would be the coming together of the world to fight back the aggression of the Iraqi Dictator showing the World that we had learned our lesson from World War 2. However, the luck would not run as well on the other side of the Atlantic as George Bush would be pushed past the point of having to shutdown the government in a budget battle here at home. We have already covered the budget situation in an earlier episode but we wanted to give you a sense of the full plate the President had to deal with as war loomed in the Gulf. We also include floor speeches by two Senators we profiled early in our podcasts history Senator Ernest Hollings and Senator John Warner. Jeremiah's suffering was frequent and often excessive. In Jeremiah 20, we get a glimpse of one of Jeremiah's longest nights of suffering and his response to suffering. While we are not Old Testament Prophets like Jeremiah and will probably never find ourselves tortured in the stocks, we are called and set apart like Jeremiah, and there is plenty for us to learn about suffering from the Weeping Prophet.
Jeremiah's trial and Jesus' trial have some very similar features. The outcomes were very different, however. This Easter Sunday we consider how Jeremiah was delivered from death, but how Jesus was delivered unto death. But even death could not hold Jesus from winning his final appeal.
New Democrats and even other Liberals are now fighting Justin Trudeau's carbon-tax scheme. This, as the prime minister's abandonment of Israel has lost him a significant segment of long-time supporters. Postmedia's Lorne Gunter joins Brian Lilley this week to unpack the chaos that appears to be consuming the Liberal party right now. They get into how the NDP threw the government into disarray with its Palestinian statehood motion, while the Conservatives seemingly have Liberals cornered on environmental policy. The upshot is that Trudeau's one-time big tent party looks to be collapsing into a few rapidly shrinking slivers of special interests. (Recorded March 21, 2024) Learn more about your ad choices. What happens where there is no one left to reign? Jeremiah faces that terrifying reality as the final kings of Judah meet their ends. Thankfully, Jeremiah reminds us that there is a greater king to come.
A work in progress. That is probably the best way to describe our lives as we seek to abide in Christ. That's why the bible frequently turns to the analogy of clay in the hands of a potter. The potter has ultimate authority over the clay: to make and remake it as he sees fit. This image of the potter takes center stage in today's message from Jeremiah 18 and 19.
William Shakespeare once wrote, "To thine own self be true." While that may have been good advice in Hamlet, the saying doesn't really align with a biblical understanding of the world. Unfortunately, we live in a time when trusting in self is the way of the world. The prophet Jeremiah warned centuries ago: "Cursed is the man who trusts in man." In today's message from Jeremiah, chapter 17, entitled "In Us We Trust," Pastor Brian challenges us to examine where we place our trust and consider the dangers of trusting in man.
Has God ever let you down? Jeremiah certainly felt like it! In today's message from Jeremiah 15 will help us think through one of the biggest questions in our Christian faith.
Jeremiah is given a powerful object lesson to communicate God's judgment against the nation. Even with the threat of judgment, we can easily see how Jeremiah continues to point forward to the Good News about Jesus.
A dramatic conspiracy seeks to take the prophet Jeremiah's life. This conspiracy reminds us of how important it is to walk by faith in a dangerous world.
In the middle of all kinds of hardship, the people of God have confidence in the steady providence of God. Jeremiah's catastrophic situation is an encouragement to us today to stay humble and trust the LORD.

This week's guest author is Karen Heenan (Coming Apart, indie published, October 2022). Our discussion ranges from what happens when the characters in your 1930's stand-alone historical novel have more to say (your book turns into a trilogy), what to do when as agent asks you to rewrite your novel in another author's voice (you part ways) to the unexpected and fascinating tidbits you learn when diving into research (ever heard of ‘bootleg coal-mining?'). We end with a discussion of indie vs. trad publishing where Karen maintains agents are no longer the gatekeepers; readers are. And all they care about is whether your book is any good. As an only child, Karen Heenan learned young that boredom was the ultimate enemy. Since discovering books, she is never without one in her hand and several more in her head. Karen lives in Lansdowne, PA, just outside Philadelphia, where she grows much of her own food and makes her own clothes. She is accompanied on her quest for self-sufficiency by a very patient husband and an ever-changing number of cats. One constant: she is always writing her next book.
