In this really great discussion, we talk with science communicator Sibusiso Biyela about decolonizing science, from both theoretical and practical standpoints! This is a fascinating topic that we hope to explore further in upcoming episodes, and a topic that doesn't get nearly the attention or comradely discussion that it deserves. Sibusiso Biyela is a science communicator and journalist in South Africa. He also co-hosts the isiZulu language science podcast iLukuluku. In this sermon we had the privilege of hearing from a guest preacher, Sibusiso Mlotshwa. Sibusiso, dived into Luke 5:1-11. In this passage we witness the miraculous catch of fish by Simon, Peter, James, and John. The overflowing catch of fish leaves Simon and Peter in awe of Jesus' power and authority. However, what follows is even more astonishing. Jesus tells Simon and Peter to not be afraid and that they will no longer be catching fish but rather catching people as they become disciples and follow Jesus. This passage demonstrates the abundant and undeserved grace that Jesus offers to all of us. Just like how Jesus saw potential in Simon and Peter, He sees potential in each and every one of us. No matter our past mistakes or shortcomings, Jesus offers us the opportunity to become His disciples and serve Him.

An esteemed human rights lawyer from Swaziland, Sibusiso Nhlabatsi speaks to me on terrorism legislations, Swaziland's Suppression of Terrorism Act, 2008 ("the Act"), and judicial crisis. Mr Nhlabatsi is known for his fortitude and taking critical human rights cases in Swaziland - even against the machinary of government. In this episode we talk about: most terrorism legislations have been promulgated as weapons of governments to clamp down on political opponents. Swaziland Suppression of Terrorism Act is no different. The government passed it on a certificate of urgency devoid of following legislative promulgation processes. The Act violates fundamental human rights and the government has been using it to proscribe political movements as terrorist and to silence dissent. A full bench of the High Court of Swaziland, in 2016 declared some of the provisions of the Act unconstitutional. Six years later (2022) the government resuscitates its appeal at the Supreme Court and gets an unprecedented condonation for its laxity in failing to execute the appeal. Ostensibly, government's renewal of its interest to execute the appeal has been incentivized by the current political unrest. Mr. Nhlabatsi laments that the judiciary in Swaziland is in shambles. Seasonsed farmers maintain that diversification is key for new players in the game and this week experts focus on growing microgreens. Farmers say it's an ideal produce to expand on a small scale but establishing a market is vital. Our book of the week is Lost and Founder: A Painfully Honest Field Guide to the Startup World by Rand Fishkin. And, our farmer tip of the week comes from Sibusiso Xaba, co-founder and CEO of Africa Cannabis Advisory Group.

In this episode, I get to talk with a South African mountain climber named Sibusiso Vilane. He became the first black person to summit Mt. Everest on May 26, 2003. He went on to summit the highest mountain on each of the seven continents, as well as several others including the Matterhorn. He runs marathons to stay fit in between his mountain climbing adventures and has accomplished several other feats, including trekking to both poles. Sibusiso didn't get his start as the child of a great mountain climber. In fact, he grew up very poor and never dreamed of the adventures he would embark on during his lifetime. During our conversation Sibusiso shares stories of his humble beginnings, how an act of kindness connected him with a man who would change his life forever, and how he overcame so many obstacles in order to climb Mt. Everest. His story is one of humility, kindness, and persistence in the face of insurmountable odds which he now uses to inspire others to conquer their personal Mt. Everests. Hello! And welcome to series two of Mountain Air! It's an absolute pleasure for this episode to be supported by UKHillwalking.com, and an equal pleasure to be bringing you 87-minutes of conversation with Sibusiso Vilane - an inspirational man with an inspirational story to tell.In 2003, Sibusiso he became the first black African to summit Mt Everest, a phenomenal achievement given his impoverished roots and lack of mountaineering background, and one that earned him the attention and praise of Nelson Mandela and the wider world. But his story runs far deeper than that. His childhood was one of extreme poverty in apartheid Johannesburg, and later in Swaziland (now Eswatini). Hard work, dedication and the privilege of being able to attend school from age 10 eventually brought him a job as a tourist officer in a nature reserve, a position which made possible a chance meeting that would change the path of his life forever.Consumed by a passion for mountains and physical challenges, his life story is one that involves continental summits, ultra running, humility, the responsibilities of being a role model, laughter, charity work, motivational speaking, multiple summits of Everest and historical partnerships with...
