My guest is Dr. Mary-Frances O'Connor, PhD, Professor of Clinical Psychology and Psychiatry at the University of Arizona and a world expert on the science of grief and loss. We discuss what happens in the brain and body when we grieve, the role of dopamine and yearning in the grieving process, the health risks of getting stuck at particular stages of grief and how to move through loss while also deeply honoring the person, animal or thing that is no longer with us. Dr. O'Connor explains that grief involves cycling back and forth between protest and despair (often guilt and anger too) and explains science-supported ways to move through that process in the healthiest possible way. Everyone experiences grief and loss at some point. Dr. O'Connor provides valuable knowledge and tools to help you navigate grief under any circumstance. Send us a textAfter experiencing the unimaginable on a fateful Christmas Day, Jennifer Thom's journey from Kenya to Alberta led her on a profound path through the world of grief and healing. She shares her inspiring story, illustrating how navigating personal loss can ignite a passion for helping others. Jennifer opens up about her transformation from a troubled adolescence to becoming a funeral director, revealing how her work and her husband have brought purpose and fulfillment. Together, they have turned grief into a compassionate mission, showing that empathy and community can build the resilience to face life's toughest challenges.Throughout our conversation, Jennifer and I explore the weight of emotional burdens and the importance of unpacking them to lead a more meaningful life. We liken these burdens to "rocks in a backpack," which can be unknowingly added by the words and actions of others. By addressing these emotional weights, whether from loss or day-to-day life, we can learn to travel light, focusing on what truly matters. We delve into the transformative nature of grief, discussing how personal healing can begin with small steps like writing letters of forgiveness or simply acknowledging the need to let go.As we reflect on personal perspectives and societal shifts, we emphasize the celebration of life and the importance of living without regrets. Jennifer shares poignant anecdotes about coping with loss differently than her husband, reminding us of the need to respect individual grieving processes. Our discussion highlights the beauty of cherishing relationships and living intentionally, embracing each day with love and gratitude. By the episode's end, we raise a toast to the powerful community of women in the service industry, encouraging them to embrace their strength and continue making a significant impact in the world.TakeawaysWe all experience more than 40 losses in our lives.Grief is not just about losing a loved one; it encompasses many forms of loss.Everyone collects "rocks in their backpack" - learn how & why!Unpacking our emotional burdens is essential for healing.Living intentionally can help us appreciate life more fully. We grieve differently, and that's okay.Community support is crucial during times of grief.Connect with Jennifer ThomFacebook Instagram YouTubeStories That Heal Podcast Stronger Life Connections Website"When Flowers Aren't Enough - LessoConnect more with Tanya & Ladies Kickin Ass… Facebook LinkedIn YouTube TikTok Website Insta Join the waitlist: BadAss Inner Circle
What if we stopped running from death and started embracing it with humor, heart, and authenticity? In this episode, I sit down with Alanna, a co-founder of Good Mourning, to talk about how they are turning the way we approach end-of-life celebrations on its head.We dive into the idea of living wakes—yes, you heard that right—where loved ones gather to celebrate a life while the person is still here to enjoy it. Alanna shares how Good Mourning is helping families craft deeply personal send-offs that honor not just how someone died, but how they lived. If the thought of talking about death makes you squirm, this conversation is for you. Alanna and I break down why facing our mortality head-on can actually be one of the most empowering things we do.Here's what we touch on:The inspiring mission behind Good Mourning and why they're revolutionizing end-of-life celebrations. How to plan a deeply personal, one-of-a-kind memorial. The benefits of living wakes: celebrating life while your loved ones are still present. How breaking the taboo around death can be so freeing. Our personal stories of loss and what they've taught us about life, grief, and moving forward. How embracing these difficult conversations makes end-of-life planning a gift, not a burden.Ready to shift your perspective and start living (and dying) on your own terms? Steve Albini's Life Celebration Reissue of The Big Black Episode from October 2014.Interviews with Steve Albini, Santiago Durango, Jeff Pezzati, Camilo Gonzalez, Jim DeRogatis, and Russ Forster.July 22nd is the date of Steve Albini's Birthday. I never do rebroadcasts of past episodes but I was informed of the idea for a life celebration of Steve on his birthday, so I was encouraged to participate. The episode is worth it. One of my best. Much of the credit goes to my partner in this Russ Forster and of course to Steve and Santiago.- JugheadBig Black's aggressive and abrasive music was characterized by distinctively clanky guitars and the use of a drum machine (who they lovingly called Roland) elements which pre-cursored industrial rock. The band acknowledged no taboos and Albini's lyrics openly dealt with loaded topics including murder, rape, child sexual abuse, and racism. They also held staunch principles, shunning the mainstream music industry and insisting on complete control over all aspects of their career. This podcast attempts to tell a portion of the history of the band from the perspective of their ep Bulldozer through their first full length record Atomizer. (Marking a transition from a project purely conceived by Steve Albini into a cohesive band with the added influences from collaborators Santiago Durango and Dave Riley.) This episode is co-hosted by Russ Forster and includes interviews with band members Santiago Durango, Steve Albini, and Jeff Pezzati, including extra interview material with friend and fellow songwriter/musician Camilo Gonzalez. Lastly an audio piece written by journalist/novelist/radio personality Jim DeRogatis. Russ Forster is a perennial dabbler in the underground and eccentric. Past exercises in cognitive dissonance include Underdog Records, 8-Track Mind magazine, documentaries So Wrong They're Right and Tributary, and various and sundry bands and acts like his current extreme-solo project Rakehell. [youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X5sVMJnoZLU] Image by jjtypography Tonight, we dedicate the whole show to Dawn Bohulano Mabalon, a beloved academic at San Francisco State University. In addition to being a scholar, she was an activist who loved her hometown of Stockton, her Giants, and her Warriors. The Filipino Women's Network named her one of the 100 Most Influential Filipinas in the world in 2013. Dawn passed away unexpectedly on August 10th this year and the impact of our community's loss is still being felt. To convey the depth of Dawn's work, we'll talk with three people whom she has worked closely with on projects connected to Stockton: Gayle Romasanta, Dillon Delvo, and Celine Parreñas Shimizu. Gayle, Dawn, and illustrator Andre Sibayan produced on a children's book about labor leader and Stockton Larry Itliong called Larry Itliong: Journey for Justice, which is now available for purchase. Professor Celine Parreñas Shimizu, had been working with Dawn on a documentary, The Celine Archive, about Celine Navarro, a Filipina woman murdered by her own community in Stockton in the 1930s. * Please note, this audio archive has removed mention of Tim Lincecum's family heritage. Dillon Delvo talks about Little Manila Rising, an organization that grew out of Dillon and Dawn's successful effort to mitigate the destruction of the Little Manila district in Stockton. We also hear from speakers and performers at the Dawn's Life Celebration at San Francisco State on October 6. We'll hear from Jaelyn Sanidad from Little Manila Rising, Joyce Manalo, Kiwi Illafonte and Native Guns, and DJs Celskiii and Deeandroid. Clips of Dawn Mabalon in this show were provided by Celine Parreñas Shimizu from The Celine Archive movie, and Gayle Romasanta from the Larry Itliong called Larry Itliong: Journey for Justice Indigogo campaign. In addition to thanking tonight's guests for sharing deeply personal stories about their beloved friend, thank you to Allyson Tintiagco Cubales, Arlene Daus-Magbual, and the crew at SF State for your help in recording the SF State memorial. Thank you Allan Manalo. Thank you to Dawn's husband, Jesse Gonzales. Thank you to my in-laws who have that special Stockton connection to Dawn: Aurora and Rolando Saria; JR. Lorie and Levie Saria; Ron, Tricia, Cecily, Leia, and Romy Ramos. Thank you to my husband and my rock, Oliver Saria. The post APEX Express – Dawn Mabalon is in the Heart appeared first on KPFA.
Born in Kingston, Jamaica, on May 24th, 1938, Campbell earned the nicknames "Prince" for his pre-music career as a street boxer and "Buster" after Jamaican Labour party leader Sir Alexander Bustamante. He fronted numerous now-obscure groups before becoming Dodd's security guard-cum–personal assistant–cum-selector. It was here where Campbell learned the machinations of Jamaica's music industry, knowledge he used in becoming his own sound system operator and the owner of record store Buster's Record Shack. Campbell's "Voice of the People" system quickly became one of the island's most revered, rivaling legends like Dodd and Duke Reid. Campbell produced and released his first single, "Little Honey"/"Luke Lane Shuffle," under the name Buster's Group in 1961, the same year he would produce ska group the Folkes Brothers' beloved "Oh Carolina." On that track, as on many subsequent songs, Campbell asked guitarist Jah Jerry to focus on the song's afterbeat — the weaker part of a musical beat — versus the more typical downbeat. The shift, combined with the use of nyabingi drummers Count Ossie and His Wareikas, would mark a huge influence on the development of ska music. Campbell would produce 13 songs during the "Oh Carolina" session, each one becoming a nationwide hit.
