Despite its forward heart-racing angle, the podcast is a platform created to teach. Each episode will unpack and tell controversial topics while highlighting their authentic truth. Show notes In this episode, we listen to students' and interviewees' thoughts about Lobola, surrounding the question; can women propose? Our host Fari Dangwa, introduces us to Dinning hall workers Xoliswa Hoyi, Ntombovuyo Zweni, and Trevor Mame. We also hear fromour guest, a JMS4 student, who shares her opinion about the topic. Pt 1 - Before anyone can say "I do" at the altar, there is much that needs to happen! The main reason for which lobola is practised hinges on building relationships between the families of the prospective bride and groom - since marriage is beyond a union between two individuals. These days however, the lobola practice has changed and some couples are "opting out" of the process. Want to learn more? You are in the right place!

Liesl Laurie says it was one of the most exciting days of her life. The day stared at 10:30 and by 12:00 the process was done.
A storm is brewing in Zimbabwe following a landmark ruling by the High Court that if a married woman cheats then her husband is entitled to full lobola refund. This came after years of court proceedings in which a magistrate court also made the same judgement but was appealed against. In the appeals court, Justices' Mwayera and Uchena concurred that the husband is entitled to a full lobola refund causing some buzz on social media on the matter. Channel Africa's John Cassim, reports from Harare...
I met Cleo at work. She is a young professional and currently doing her PhD at a South African University. At home she takes the role of the muroora, the daughter in law, who holds a special position in the family. Today we talk about lobola, the bride price, connected to a special ceremony.
This episode is all about Lobola! We look at the practice of Lobola (bride price) and how it relates to modern times. We also discuss relationships and how they have culturally evolved globally. We return with our media consumption spot with a very quick "review" of the movie 'Rebecca'. This week I am joined by my girl Vimbai. We discuss some long-standing patriarchal values in Southern African cultures and the effect that is has had on us and our view of how men should be treated. From paying Lobola, to women having to break the glass ceiling in the workplace, we delve into multiple corners of patriarchy that we have grown up seeing and anticipate experiencing. Blaque and Sbu look at why lobola is often seen as a burden not a blessing. Yet there are positive aspects we can embrace and support as Christians.
This episode was loads of fun to record as we had 3 very special guests join us. Active FM — Our presenters have a very interesting discussion about the price of wanting to get married and getting married. But where and how did cows become part of the process?
Excited to share this episode for 2 reasons: it's family and it's an opportunity for you to learn about the Zimbabwean culture when it comes to love, marriage, weddings and lobola. Isaac and Ruth Anne tell their story so beautifully and also they explain the cultural norms regarding bride price etc Book recommendations: His Needs Her Needs by Willard F Harley Jr. Some words used in this episode and their meaning: 1) Tete - Aunt 2) lobola/ dowry - token of your devotion aka bride price 3) Mukoma - Brother or sister or a senior person
Hi guys! Yes, it has been a minute but the podcast is back to regular programming. This episode is a prequel to the 'When are you getting married?' series, inspired by all the African aunties who don't mind their business. Lobola is a key part of the preliminary stages of marriage in African culture (the assumption is that you've already found someone to marry/be married to at this point). Don't forget to bring a calculator. Guest: Mayanga Ngulube @mayangulube Intro/Outro: Mag44 - Kabolala
East Coast Radio — A listener is not sure whether or not to pay lobola for his partner and needs some advice.
Active FM — Lobola is a required price a man has to pay when he wants to marry a woman in some cultures in Africa. DJ Nave speaks about Black Friday coming up and whether it is worth it or not. What would happen if Black Friday also affected Lobola prices?
“Something very beautiful happens to people when their world has fallen apart: a humility, a nobility, a higher intelligence emerges at just the point when our knees hit the floor.” Marianne Williamson My knees have hit the floor several times over the past year, and I’ve had a major realization. On a recent Sunday I afternoon, I revamped my entire coaching business, and I’ve made it my mission to support other brilliant women to prepare for love. There will be more information coming about my group coaching designed to help you attract your soul partner. Head over to jennerlinden.com to find out more. If you are enjoying the show please leave a review on iTunes. It really is one of the very best ways to grow the show. My guest this week is Ivy Kaminsky of Findyourpower.org. I’ve gotten to know Ivy over the past few years and I’m so excited to share her with my audience. Ivy took a graduate program in development studies in Africa after working for a corporate event planning company. She likes to describe her former job as “babysitting adults in cool places.” She eventually found herself aligning with several aspects of the job including the travel and gluttonous nature of the scene. After Ivy’s mom was diagnosed with cancer--she passed only two weeks later--she found her life and identity were incredibly shaken. Ivy found her way to non-profit work and South Africa. She did her thesis project in a domestic abuse shelter in the Cape Flats, an apartheid relocation area in Cape Town. It was here that she had experiences that “sewed the seeds” for Find Your Power including a women’s empowerment tour that allowed her to shadow a young woman in order to pay her Lobola, or bride price, to her parents. She turned down a promotion in higher education and took a Massive Open Online course in Social Entrepreneurship. She organized a team of fifty people of around the idea of women’s empowerment and the course drove her to write a business plan. Ivy learned some valuable lessons about success and failure. She says crowdfunding takes an immense amount of time. She also says crowdfunding is difficult without a lot of media attention or a drive to ask people for money. Another key takeaway from our discussion is her emphasis on needs-based assessments as the foundation of her work before creating an app or resource library. Ivy’s largest event of the year Poetry Jam is coming up at Shindig in Minneapolis on Give to the Max Day. You can also find out more on Find Your Power’s Facebook Page. Are you loving the podcast? 1 Corinthians 7: 1 - 16. Our culture is impacting in different ways. Our influence by culture has warped our view on sex. In this series we look at what the bible says about sex. There's joy to be found in it and David Kobedi expounds upon it. In this talk he encourages us all to see the joy in a God ordained, married sexual relationship

Radiant Culture — In the last 2 episodes we were talking about pre marital sex and how christian couples who are dating can deal with the temtation to have sex before marriage. So now you have survived the temptation and you want to make your relationship official so you can "Obey the Thirst", how should it be done? What is marriage and its intended purpose, and what should be considered for a union to be identified as a marriage? What is the biblical stance on lobola, should Africans who are christians still be practicing and observing this tradition? Can a couple then consider themselves married after completing the lobola ceremony? Or does God only consider the marriage covenant after the “White wedding”?Why does it seem like the Church only recorgnises a marriage when a coupe has had a "white wedding ceremony", and how can this be addressed?
Lobola in this day and age... does it have a place? From a feminist perspective Lobola should be out of place in our society as it gives a particular gender preferential treatment. Can we as a society plainly accept it because "it's tradition", or have traditions been wrong a million times before? This also brings up a more important question of how we can merge customary traditions in this new world. Is it possible or should we let it go? Moreover, what makes some women more valuable than others?
Welcome to the Classroom! This is the seventh episode of my weekly show, all about the things they never taught us in school. When the South Africans fall in love and get married, they still, up to this day, pay lobola for the brides-to-be. What is lobola exactly? Who is suppose to negotiate and decide on lobola? What do you say or talk about when you negotiate lobola? How much is it? For this love negotiation Classroom I am joined by James Seetelo, a young Tswana man who happened to hear his sister's lobola negotiations.
