Even though she considers her hometown as the tiny city of St Helena, CA, Sarah Lopez is not your average small-town girl. Throughout her life, she has moved well over 27 times and during part of her life, lived in a 36ft Bounder Motor Home selling See's candies, slept on a dashboard, and didn't start attending public school until the 7th grade. Sarah quoted our Co-Host, Rob, at an event Sarah spoke once that really helped change his life. "The Door In Front Of You Is Unlocked, You Just Have To Open It. Watch the show to find out what happened to make this quote so important to everyone and how it too can change your life. Fast forward, she is now a 2009 graduate of San Jose State University with a Bachelor of Science in Public Relations and is the Communications and Development Manager for A Method Public Schools, a show announcer at Six Flags Discovery Kingdom, the host of Diamond Certified Experts consumer tip videos for the American Ratings Corporation, the youngest Executive Director in the Miss California Organization for the Miss Napa County Scholarship Program, and is featured as "Savvy Sasa" on The NAPA Show for Channel 28 with Napa Valley TV. The keys to her success? Hard work, dedication, and most importantly, a positive attitude. Sarah is a three-time local titleholder in the Miss America Organization as Miss Marin County 2011, Miss Northern California Regional 2009, and Miss Napa County 2008. She became involved in pageants when she was 16 years old as a contestant in the Napa Valley Junior Miss Program and then went on to participate in the Miss Napa County Scholarship Program. With a spirit for community service, she enjoys promoting her platform "The Power of Positive Thinking," to civic organizations, middle and high schools all over the Bay Area. At 17, she wrote an autobiography titled "Life Outside a Fish Bowl," and was inspired to create this platform based on part of her background growing up in a 36-foot Bounder motor home with ten people selling See's candies, sleeping on a dashboard, and not attending school until she was in the 7th grade. She shares her message through her innovative presentation including "12 Ways To Achieve Your Goals Through Positive Thinking" complete with a personal growth activity at the end. www.savvysasa.com Subscribe To What Up! https://bit.ly/3qRR69T More What Up Videos
*After recording the episode, we realized we failed to mention that both Gwazi (Iron Gwazi) at Busch Gardens Tampa and Roar (The Joker) at Six Flags Discovery Kingdom were originally built by GCI. Making our statement about RMC not having converted a GCI coaster yet ridiculous and irresponsible. We promise to do better in the future. For this episode we decided to try something a little different. Instead of talking about a defunct coaster or park, we are instead discussing a defunct roller coaster manufacturing company. That company happens to be the one and only Dinn Corporation. Dinn Corp. first got it's start in 1983 when company founder, Charles Dinn, decided to venture into the coaster manufacturing business on his own. Prior to establishing the Dinn Corporation, Charles Dinn worked as an engineer for Kings Island and was a part of the team that designed and built one of the most iconic coasters in the world, The Beast. If you have ever had the opportunity to ride a coaster manufactured by Dinn Corp., then you probably know all too well that these wooden coasters have a reputation for being a rough and uncomfortable ride. Only eleven coasters were constructed under the Dinn Corp. name in the companies short life (1983-1991). Many of those coasters have either since been demolished or re-imagined by the good folks at Rocky Mountain Construction (RMC). What are your thoughts about Dinn Corporation? Were you a fan of these coasters? What impact did the unsuccessful longevity of the Dinn coaster models have on the extremely successful rise of Rocky Mountain Construction in the roller coaster community? Thanks for listening!Check us out on Twitter and Instagram: @airtimemisfitsWe have awesome defunct coaster and park inspired goods for sale in our shop! Each year, Matt and two friends meet-up for Coaster Nerd Con (CNC), their own little convention for nerdy coaster riding. This year, the trio headed west to California. The parks and attractions they visited were: Pacific Park on the Santa Monica Pier, Knott's Berry Farm, Warner Bros. Studio Tour, Universal Studios Hollywood, Six Flags Magic Mountain, California's Great America, Six Flags Discovery Kingdom and Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk. In this episode, Matt reveals which park had the best guest service, as well as his favorite coaster of the trip. He also shares 5 major lessons that he took away from this experience. They are: It all starts with your attitude and a quote from Henry Ford, "whether you think you can or you think you can't, you're right." The waiting experience at your attraction could be having a bigger impact in the overall guest experience than you think. It's not enough for us to be employers, we must also be educators. Parks who started off as twins had very different journeys. It's probably time to re-think incentive programs and replace them with "inspiration programs." Have a question for the mailbag or know of a guest we should feature? Drop us a line! Josh - josh@amusementadvantage.com Matt - matt@performanceoptimist.com Twitter Facebook LinkedIn This episode is brought to you by FunRating. If you work in any area of the attractions industry, you’re probably curious how guests at your attraction perceive critical areas of guest experience. Which facility type provided the best service in 2018? Who really needs to improve their food service? And which attraction saw the highest increase in likelihood to return? These questions, and more, can all be found in the FunRating Report, and this is information that only Amusement Advantage can provide. The FunRating Report can be found at funrating.com, and we have an exclusive offering for AttractionPros listeners. To save 10% off of the one-time purchase of $375, tune into the podcast!

So many animals are mistreated in the name of "entertainment", how do you begin to combat the cruelty? Animal activist Janet Locke tells Charly Kayle what made her speak her truth and protest against the many abuses animals suffer in amusement parks that we never realize. They go behind the scenes at Six Flags Discovery Kingdom in Vallejo, CA and find out why there's nothing caring OR educational about their appalling death rate. She also explains how to raise children with compassion and empathy so they respect all life. Janet Locke is a former teacher turned animal rights activist, who spearheads the group "Advocates for the Animals at Six Flags", actively protesting the mistreatment of their dolphins, tigers, giraffes, elephants and other long-suffering animals. She successfully protested Ringling Brothers Barnum and Bailey Circus in San Francisco for years until it finally closed, and has participated in protests against rodeos, foie gras-serving restaurants, a butcher shop, chicken-slaughtering facilities, and more. Janet has continued tutoring students for the last 30 years teaching them empathy for others, and is a devout Christian and vegan who lives with her husband, three rescue dogs and six rescue parakeets in Marin County, CA. We're back with a jam-packed, all-new episode of The Original Theme Park Podcast! This week, we talk about Six Flags Discovery Kingdom's new roller coaster "Superman: Ultimate Flight!" The new ride includes multi-directional launches, several non-inverting loops and a barrel-roll at 150 feet in the air! (That's one of the tallest inversions in the world!) As a bonus to this week's audio podcast, the guys have also produced a video podcast that shows you footage of the new ride along with some "Coaster Commentary!" The guys also discuss Mike's trip to Walt Disney World. Mike had a chance to try out the new "Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom" interactive game. Is it work trying out the next time you're in Orlando? Jeff, Gonch, Mike and Carrie review this week's news in the amusement industry. Carrie says recounts her experience at Phoenix Phall Phunfest at Knoebels. Accommodations are "challenging" around that area. Watch out for severed chicken heads. Canobie Lake Park waiting on the traffic study to proceed with Euro Fighter. Extreme World civil suit settled out of court, criminal trial of operator yet to come. We're still not comfortable with the precedent of someone doing a minimum wage job being charged with a crime. Food & Wine Festival begins at Epcot. It's about cheese and wine, not drink around the world advance mode. Sidebar: box wine. Checketts is out at S&S, no longer holding any stake and not consulting. What's with entrepreneurs that totally let go of something they started? Cedar Fair sets out concrete financial goals for 2015, and reinstates the distribution. Does the entire sale fiasco seem even more ridiculous? This causes zero confidence for the executive team. Another orca dies at SeaWorld Orlando, tired debate resumes about "free" versus captive animals. Good clowns protest portrayal of evil clowns at Alton Towers. We all agree that it's probably a scam. And when did clowns become primarily evil? Sidebar: Insane Clown Posse are Evangelical Christians. And still not musicians. Also sidebar: Katy Perry and Elmo on Sesame Street. Six Flags Discovery Kingdom announces a swing tower. They're the new drop tower. Minor accident involving rollback on Pony Express at Knott's Berry Farm injures ten people. Expect the state to shut it down and investigate for two years. Zippin Pippin rises in Green Bay. How many roller coasters did Elvis actually ever ride? Mental illness advocates ask Cedar Point to shut down its asylum haunted attractions. Mike says it's the fault of Hollywood. BooBuzz returns to Cedar Point on Friday, October 15.
