The state of housing affordability and attainability in Colorado Springs, and what the Pikes Peak Housing Network is doing to improve it. “Colorado Springs and El Paso County aren't building enough homes that typical buyers can afford, while smaller houses and other types of housing options are needed to make housing more attainable for many people, including young adults… and seniors….” That's the conclusion of a recent report by the Pikes Peak Housing Network. Jill Gaebler, Executive Director, tells us about how the PPHN is meeting the challenge of supporting “innovative and collaborative solutions to promote housing affordability, access and production” in the Pikes Peak Region. The Network's mission involves advocating for sustainability principles like infill and redevelopment and access to transportation options, employment and living wages, cultural activities, green space, and more. Affordable, accessible housing is key to the establishment of a regional culture and resilient, sustainable built environment essential to a healthy economy, quality of life, attractive workforce environment, and personal health now and in the future.LINKS:Pikes Peak Housing Network: https://pphousingnetwork.org2024 State of Housing Report: https://pphousingnetwork.org/2024-PPHN-State-of-Housing-Report-1.pdfThis episode was recorded at the Sustainability in Progress (SIP) virtual event on May 21, 2025. In less than 40 days, thousands of park and recreation professionals from across the country will gather in Atlanta for the 2024 NRPA Annual Conference. This is, without a doubt, the best park and recreation conference you can attend — it's filled with tons of amazing opportunities to learn, build your network, and of course, have a little fun with your peers. As we get closer to the conference, we know there are probably some professionals out there who are attending for the first time and have a lot of questions. Cort recently posted on LinkedIn asking for previous attendees to share their best tips for first-timers, and the comments did not disappoint. So, we decided to turn them into today's episode of Open Space Radio! Every single tip shared was super valuable, and if you're attending the 2024 NRPA Annual Conference this October 8-10 for the first time, we encourage you to listen and keep some of these nuggets in mind while you're in Atlanta — and while you're packing! Tune in to the full episode below to hear all the tips and our reactions to each of them. If you prefer to read instead of listen, we've listed them below, as well. And, if you haven't already registered, there's still time. Visit conference.nrpa.org to register today and we hope to see you in Atlanta! Nichole Bohner, Aquatics Division Manager, City of Round Rock, Texas “Talk to everyone! When you're seated in the conference sessions, get to know those around you and exchange contacts.” Nichole went on to say, “If you're lucky enough to travel to conference with coworkers, don't be afraid to broaden your horizons. Take every opportunity to broaden your network. You never know who you'll meet who is struggling with the same issues or has ideas that would help your operation.” Sarah Olson, CPRP, Public Works Deputy Director of Engineering, Planning, and Development Servies, City of Kirkland, Washington “Go to a pre-conference event. It's a smaller crowd, a great way to get through registration when things are way less busy and a great way to start making new friends. Eric Lopez, CPRE, District Superintendent of Parks and Recreation, City of Fort Worth, Texas “Don't underestimate the power of night socials and lunchtime. A lot of great connections happen over informal conversations.” “Take notes, review them later and plan to execute the things that resonated more. Going back to your leadership with actionable things you learned and takeaways will aid in enhancing their commitment in sending staff in future years.” Lisa Shore, CPRP, CPSI, Anne Arundel County, Maryland “Leave room in your suitcase for all the cool stuff you'll bring home!” Jeanette Aiello, CPRE, Project and Operations Supervisor, Charter Township of Canton, Michigan “Attend at least one session in a topic area that is different than what you regularly work in. It can spark some interesting thoughts or possibly open you up to a new aspect of the field. Also, be willing to talk to the person sitting next to you. You'll likely want to get into your session 15 minutes prior and that opens you up to meeting some incredible professionals.” Trista Taylor, CPRP, CPO, Deputy Parks and Recreation Director, Village of Cottage Grove, Wisconsin “Check out the schedule and try to have a backup plan for the sessions you want in case the room is full! If you arrive early, visit the app to get an idea of the layout. Last year was my first time and the experience was a shock to my system in a great way but can be overwhelming!” Anthony Iracki, MS, CPRP, CORE Professional Development Manager, PlayCore “Ask for business cards and take ownership of the connection. Send a LinkedIn request or a friendly email within a week of getting back from the conference.” “Take advantage of the network meetings.” Tom Venniro, CPRP, Director of Hilton-Parma Parks and Recreation, New York, and co-host of RecLess Podcast “Just show up. A lot of times, the introvert in me (and the fact that I feel I'm always go, go, go at home), tells me to go to conference and then get to that room and relax. Instead, seek out the social or if you are asked to join people at one or for a meal, say yes. You never know how any connection or conversation can impact you/others.” “Don't sleep on the exhibit hall. For starters, it is huge! Plan in at least 4-5 hours over two days if you want to cover it all. The vendors are amazing and want to talk to you, but be intentional on stopping with limited times. Another fun tip, they all have swag and some years back I started looking for items my team back home might like and I bring them all back a swag care package and some candy as a thank you for holding it all down while I was away. I have also borrowed many ideas for our own swag.” CivicPlus® Recreation Management is a proud sponsor of Open Space Radio. Welcome to another engaging episode of Safety FM with Jay Allen, recorded live at the Energy Safety Canada Conference 2024 in Banff. In this episode, Jay sits down with Mr. Michael Bathgate and Mr. Taylor Hewlett, both esteemed Operations Supervisors at Imperial, to discuss their compelling presentation, "People Don't Suck: Looking at HOP Through a Leadership Lens." Michael Bathgate, a Mine Operations Supervisor at Imperial Oil, has a deep passion for leadership, constantly fueled by reading and applying insights from renowned authors like Simon Sinek and Adam Grant. With a career starting in the construction and mining industry right out of high school, Michael has spent the last 10 years at Imperial's Kearl lake site, with seven of those years in a supervisory role. Outside of work, Michael enjoys fishing and exploring the Gulf Islands with his son Ivor and partner Erin. Taylor Hewlett, also an Operations Supervisor at Imperial, brings a unique perspective from his five years as an Aircraft Technician in the military before transitioning to the oil sands industry. With 15 years in the oil sands and 12 years in a supervisory role, Taylor is inspired by leadership concepts from John Maxwell. He is dedicated to working with people and has been committed to leadership development since his early twenties. Taylor is a father of five and has been married to his wife Natalie for 15 years. In their joint presentation, "People Don't Suck," Michael and Taylor connect Human and Organizational Performance (HOP) with leadership through captivating storytelling. They challenge the notion that people are the problem, presenting them instead as the solution. By leveraging HOP principles, they reveal how leaders can unlock their team's full potential, transform problem-solving approaches, and positively impact organizational culture, safety, and productivity. Join us as Michael and Taylor share their experiences and insights on integrating HOP with effective leadership. This episode is packed with practical strategies and inspiring stories that demonstrate how viewing people as the solution can revolutionize your organization. Tune in to Safety FM with Jay Allen for this insightful discussion on how leadership and HOP can work together to create a safer, more productive workplace. This conversation is essential listening for anyone looking to enhance their leadership skills and improve their organization's performance.

Video Version About the Podcast My guest today is Scott Lushin, Senior Manager of Global Operational Excellence at Donaldson Company, Incorporated. In this episode, Scott takes us through his professional journey. Starting off in retail automotive and the restaurant business, it is obvious that has two passions; problem solving and leadership. Although his passion for problem-solving made itself readily apparent in his early life, his skills in leadership made themselves known later and over time. Scott started his journey right out of high school at an automotive service chain where he became manager and then training manager. After a few years, he eventually moved on to work in the food industry at a chain of restaurants; becoming training manager then district manager. Against his mother's advice against seeking a job in manufacturing, he joined Donaldson through a temp-agency. He has always been a ‘thinker', a problem solver, even as a kid he loved to solve problems. The more complex the problem, the more fun they were to solve. He could spend days trying to unravel a problem and eventually he got very good at it. His problem-solving specialty is manufacturing and process improvements. Scott sees the world through a different lens, which is why he is often called upon to solve complex problems. He especially loves being thrown into a complex problem and forming a team to tackle it. Even though Scott did not (and does not still) have a college degree, Donaldson must have seen something in Scott, as he has been there 32 years. He has held positions and roles too varied to list, but include: Operations Supervisor, Manufacturing Engineer, C.I. Engineer, C.I. Specialist, Operations Management, and since 2019 leading efforts with Global Operational Excellence. There was a time when a person without a college degree could grow to leadership roles in a company and Scott is living proof. Has that time passed? Or has enough time not passed to make that determination. We shall see. LinkedIn Profile: https://www.linkedin.com/in/scottlushin/ Company: Donaldson Company, Incorporated Title: Senior Manager, Global Operational Excellence Website: https://www.donaldson.com/ Year Founded: 1915 Company Type: Publicly Traded (DCI) About: Donaldson Company, Inc. manufactures and sells filtration systems and replacement parts worldwide. By Adam Turteltaub Cancer is not just a diagnosis between a patient and physician. In this podcast Jeremy Laws, Operations Supervisor at the Ohio Cancer Incidence Surveillance System, explains that a cancer diagnosis triggers state-by-state reporting requirements for healthcare providers. In general, there are two areas of reporting: cancer information and patient information. Cancer information generally includes where it is on the body, the type of cancer, what type of tissues is affected and how the cancer is behaving. Patient information includes name, age, sex, race, address, date of diagnosis and date of first treatment. And, for those concerned about HIPAA, he points out that there is a public health exception that his falls squarely under. The data provided feeds into the US Cancer Statistics Report that is published annually. It is also used by policy makers and researchers. Compliance teams need to ensure that their facilities are reporting the data, which many fail to do. There is a tendency to believe that, for example, the lab is reporting the results and so the physician does not need to. That's not the case, he explains. Worse, many facilities do not even know that they need to report cancer findings. Listen in to learn more about how to ensure your health care facilities are meeting their cancer reporting requirements.

Middlesex County residents said the noodles came from an Old Bridge home that is up for sale. Every state is different; some don't even allow you to have an operator alone at a facility unless he/she possesses a license. Tom shares how he and few other members of his team have taken it upon themselves to offer help to new employees to study, train and ask questions to help them be prepared for licensing exams and the benefits of doing so for their operation. Welcome back to “Clearing the Way," I'm your host, Bradley Martin. My goal is to uncover the challenges that small business owners have faced along their way so that you can be better prepared when you experience something similar. My guest today is fun one. One of my longest friends, Preston Miller, owner of Rusted Barrel BBQ. Preston choke slammed me in 5th grade because I pulled his chair out from underneath him as he sat down. Preston graduated from Triangle Tech with an associates degree in Welding. He has worked in oil & gas for almost 10 years, working his way up as high as an Operations Supervisor. Preston has been a live-long cook, which is actually something that him and I have bonded over since early in our friendship. We used to doctor up our ramen noodles with shrimp and whatever else we could find in his house. In May of 2019, he decided to take it a bit more seriously, investing in a food truck and opening Rusted Barrel BBQ. In this episode, we discuss how poor planning and communication can impact both your business and personal relationships. This episode features Stephon Griffin, a certified trainer who has shown remarkable initiative and results in his four years at iQor. In his first role, Stephon proposed a solution that was approved and implemented under his leadership. It is still delivering phenomenal results. In this episode, we discuss what inspired him to propose this solution, how he got it approved and implemented, and how he became a Top Certified Trainer at iQor. Stephon is located in Charlotte, North Carolina. In 2018 Stephon was employed at another company, and he was ready for a new challenge in his young career. He noticed an ad on Facebook posted by iQor. After applying, he met his future manager over a phone interview, who made a quick impression on him. On the second interview, he was shown the facility in person and was offered the position on the spot. He later learned that his manager was exploring Stephon's potential to grow and develop as a leader. Stephon's new manager taught him how to be an effective leader of customer care employees. He learned how to develop people who can grow in his absence. This approach to leadership changed his mindset about modern leadership practices. He came to understand that career development comes in many different forms. Helping People Be Their Best As an Operations Supervisor, Stephon reviewed the current processes used to measure the client customer experience program's success. He studied key performance indicators (KPIs) and recognized room for improvement. He came up with the idea that would become a program called the Agent Mentor Program. He worked on his new idea over an entire weekend. Stephon is that type. When he gets excited about an idea that he believes can impact many people, he dives in with both feet. While devoting a weekend to writing the business plan for his program idea, he anticipated the questions he could receive from his leadership team. He presented his plan on a Monday morning to his manager. The response was an overwhelming approval to go ahead with the program under his leadership. This vote of confidence helped to skyrocket Stephon's own confidence. He appreciated the belief demonstrated in him by his leadership team. His leaders never micromanaged him, giving Stephon full authority to roll out the program from A to Z. With the go-ahead to roll out this Agent Mentor Program, Stephon extended many opportunities to his coworkers. The Path to Trainer Certification One day, a training manager asked Stephon to run a seven-day training program in her absence. He enjoyed the experience so much that at the end of the week, he learned more about the journey to becoming a certified trainer at iQor. Stephon approached his manager to ask for guidance on how to embark on the path to trainer certification. As previously shown, Stephon desires to impact many people at iQor and now as a trainer. He embarked on the trainer certification program, which has four levels. He was certified on Level 1 and Level 2. When the time came to consider getting certified on Level 3, he learned that it requires curriculum development. That's when he asked for advice. A supervisor told him that getting Level 3 certified is itself a significant accomplishment. However, to achieve Top Trainer Certification is a tall mountain to climb. In fact, many trainers who earned Top Trainer in Level 3 were previously corporate trainers, which Stephon was not. This challenge inspired Stephon. The fact that his journey to Top Training in Level 3 would be somewhat of a unicorn motivated him to go after it. The Level 3 trainer certification is a four-day program. At the end of three days, he stayed up all night to develop a new training curriculum. During his all-nighter, he went through four drafts of his new curriculum until he was satisfied it was good enough to earn Top Trainer Certification. He presented it to Tarisse Grant-Shelton, Lead Trainer. He waited to hear back from her with great anticipation. When Tarisse contacted him the same day with the good news that he was to be awarded Top Certification in his class, he was thrilled. He achieved a massive milestone by aiming high, working tirelessly with a can-do attitude. He slept well after getting the good news. Stephon's Advice for iQorians on their Career Journey Stephon is currently the Assistant Manager of Quality and manager of a sales program for a client supported at the Charlotte facility. His career advice is to take advantage of all the resources available at iQor. Anyone who wants to grow has access to valuable resources through iQor University. Leaders want to help employees learn and grow to develop their careers in different roles. His advice is to let your manager know that you want to grow, and they will guide and coach you. Stephon's drive and tenacity are very inspiring. You'll notice his enthusiasm and the smile in his voice, as well as the smile on his face. It's downright contagious! Stephon's Fun Stephon is a gamer. He enjoys relaxing and playing games on his computer. I have a hunch he wins many games that he plays – his can-do attitude never seems to fail him! Astrophiz128: Richard Stephenson ~ Talking with Spacecraft Pt2 This is an amazing interview where we hear first hand how distant spacecraft are controlled from Earth. Richard Stephenson is the Operations Supervisor at the CDSCC, The Canberra Deep Space Communications Complex at Tidbinbilla, jointly run by NASA and Australia's CSIRO. Richard explains how he can lock onto and send commands to Voyager2 about 20Billion kilometres away, using the newly refurbished transmitter on the 70m DSS-43 dish, and can then capture the telemetry data that V2 sends back to earth, by controlling an array of 4 Tidbinbilla dishes. Then Richard gives us the inside story about sending commands out to the New Horizons Pluto Mission about 7billion kilometres away. Also in this stunning episode: VPN command systems. How spacecraft have virtual channels and labelled telemetry so science data can be automatically sent to project primary investigators. How data from all the missions converging on Mars can be acquired and packaged to it's required destination. How the recent vision from the Ingenuity Helicopter ended up on your computer or smartphone screen. How two antenna dishes can talk with all the Mars missions from NASA/ESA and Emirates at the same time. How NASA coordinates all the DSN dishes at Canberra, at Goldstone and at Madrid using ‘Follow the Sun' How signals from the Solar Polar Probe (aka the Parker Solar Probe) are captured via eccentric orbits which counteract the huge radio noise emitted from our sun. How the ingenious use of Software Defined Radio and 'HackRS' allows us to deal with the increased radio traffic coming from fleets of CubeSats and eavesdrop on the Voyager Missions at the crossed the Heliopause. and …. How new progress is being made with RF-Optical-Hybrid systems to deal with growing data loads coming from spacecraft. Lasers-in-Space …. what's not to love! Thanks Richard …. you paint fantastic pictures for us as you describe so clearly how we talk with spacecraft!
