Growing up, I loved amusement parks. And having lived in numerous states, I've visited dozens. I even had the chance to enjoy the park in Chicago, where my father grew up before it closed in the late 1960s. I saw the news the other day that Six Flags America outside of Washington DC was closing after this Summer season. I've been to so many that are already long gone. Are theme parks like Disneyland and Disney World squeezing out the smaller parks? I thought they might, but research says smaller parks are increasing. Six Flags America is a park on the Maryland side of DC and it does not get the love it deserves.  We went back to get a coaster credit we missed in our first year (yes a kiddie coaster but our 2nd and 3rd year of the 125 were very shameful on our coaster counts) but we discuss what has changed over the years at this under appreciated park. The family takes its first trip to Busch Gardens Williamsburg on spooky Friday the 13th for the Coasterradio fall meetup. Imagine you're walking into your favorite theme park and heading straight for favorite roller coaster. Just as you come up on the familiar twists and turns, you notice something strange.... the cars are facing backwards! This will be the experience for parks fans in the Chicago area when Six Flags Great America runs Batman: The Ride backwards for part of the 2013 season. On this week's show, we'll talk with Brandon Bruce, the park's communication's specialist about the excitement surrounding the change and why they decided to do it. We'll also find out more about igNIGHT, the park's new nighttime spectacular that will feature fireworks, special effects, live music and a storyline unique to the Windy City. We also ask you guys about your "Opening Day" traditions. Here in the United States, Spring Break is in full swing.  So that means that many of us are taking our first steps into the parks after a long winter hibernation. It's a special moment when we first walk into our favorite theme park after so many months away.  Because of this, each of us has our own unique traditions and customs to mark the occasion.   We'll hear about listener's "interesting" ways to  celebrate the start of the season. California Adventure rehab continues, the entrance is done. Mike was there last weekend, says there are a lot of workarounds to get to stuff. Little Mermaid is his favorite ride. Geauga Lake Big Dipper: Yes, there are still interested parties. Mother claims discrimination against her daughter with Down Syndrome at Dorney, who was prohibited riding. Couple gets stuck on a slingshot ride in Dallas. Jeff wouldn't ride it. Mike wouldn't because he's cheap. Bad Illinois cop gets busted at Michigan's Adventure for being a drunk idiot. Six Flags posts excellent gains. So where is the bad economy? Carrie hit Six Flags America and Great Adventure. "Marriage is so gay" shirt causes great controversy at Dollywood. Jeff, Carrie, Mike and Gonch review this week's news in the amusement industry. Ferris Wheel mania hits Las Vegas. What audience is Vegas after these days? SeaWorld attendance is up. Perhaps there's a halo effect from the Harry Potter stuff at Universal Orlando. New Jersey touts low injury rate, until girl fall to her death from Ferris wheel. No mechanical issues suspected at this point. Fatal mini train accident attributed to speed. Questions arise about who is at fault. Gonch relates the story to the responsibility issues around the accident in Wisconsin. Former Santa's Village becomes a zoo-like attraction. Mike says they went from competing with Six Flags to competing with two zoos. Q Funding loses a proxy fight with Cedar Fair, then asks for another special meeting but is denied. Cedar Fair says it has pissed away $3 million on stuff relating to the Q lawsuits and proxy votes. Cedar Point's Wildcat has a minor crash, this time at the final brakes. Universal Orlando is totally Comcastic! NBC-Universal buys up Blackstone's half of the resort. Six Flags America to retire Skull Mountain. Jeff recalls a story there. Despite some scary news stories over the years, the park's coaster package is somewhat underrated. Dorney Park snaps up some new land. That park has awesome walk-ons when it's hot and everyone is in the water park. Dallas beats Miami, Jeff launches into a Lebron slam. Cedar Fair's CFO quits. Jeff saw it as a retention problem, but Carrie suggests that perhaps he just didn't see any upward mobility without going elsewhere. Microsoft previews Kinect Disneyland Adventures for Xbox. Jeff doesn't quite get it, but Mike's princess girls totally do. Water parks: Small kids and their dads. Jeff took his family to Great Wolf Lodge in Washington, had a good time. Carrie talks about cruises as disease infested capsules. Gonch wants a Fastpass off the boat. Disney worker arrested for allegedly luring a woman to the resort and raping her. The story doesn't add up very well according to what has been reported. Cedar Fair gets some credit lubrication. Lubrication is what makes business go. SeaWorld ready to put trainers back in the water. It has been a year, but Jeff wants to hear more about the safeguards. It will always be dangerous, that's part of the job. Six Flags America gets a "Survivor" live show. Really? Who actually watches anything on CBS? Ferrari World pats itself on the back for 100 days of operation. Take that, Freestyle! Six Flags has a very profitable 2010. We think Shapiro really laid the groundwork for that success. And by the way, Gonch thinks that Six Flags America has a nice coaster lineup. Jeff wonders if he ever mentioned that he was on Superman when the chain broke. Battlestar Galactica dueling roller coaster finally reopens at Universal Singapore. Eleven months seems like a long time to fix a problem. Aside: Remember ragging on Vekoma? Las Vegas entertains the idea of a new amusement park. Jeff can't stand cab drivers that take you stupid ways. Cheetah Chase is looking like "the" ride for the year. It's like a long Maverick, sort of. Dorney is getting another hand-me-down ride, this time from California's Great America. Disney is spending a billion dollars on tech to make your day more efficient and more action packed. What's with people who are worried about doing every last thing when they go to Disney World? Some people suck at vacations. Lo-Q has a more profitable year. Funny how everything other than the unemployment rate implies that the economy is improving. Cedar Fair charges a buck an inch for a crappy sub. And they're surprised that their per cap is down?
