In this episode we sit down with track owner Charlie Hansen Charlie is a 3rd generation driver from NY he moved to NC in 1985, in 1993 he had his first start in a racecar which was a economy class street stock he got from a friend named Talmadge Simpkins, with a little success til 1997While going to college and racing Charlie was also helping out the race tracks from helping the clean up crew, flagging, track announcing, to GM, Race directing and running raceday operations all over NC, reopened Kings Speedway at one time too. He stepped away from it briefly to start a family and to focus on family things in 2007 and came back in 2011 with sporadic starts in racing like dirt late models at Southern National. Became the GM of Wake County in 2013 til 2019, and in 2020 became the sole owner/ promoter of Wake County to present day. Wake County is a tight 1/4 mile that holds races throughout the year and even host CARS Tour races dating back to 2018 which they put on great shows there Charlie is a hell of a guy really funny we talked about everything under the sun from what it's like running day to day operations at a track to making race day run as smoothly as it can but understands he's a owner and trusts the people he puts in charge from Race Director to Tech Guy to make the correct calls he's fair but understands he can please everyone. The biggest thing I applaud Charlie for is that he understands there is politics in racing and does his best to be strictly business and not get in that webbed side of racing, his passion is something you would want in a track owner and he's actually man enough to call a racer and explain stuff to them on either a DQ or a missed call to either explain hey we messed up or to hey right here this is why you got tossed. I applaud that a lot.We cover the CARS Tour coming back to Wake and the waves they are making in the racing world this past year under new ownership, to Cobra Tires cause I've been dying to ask about the question to a track owner to see the other side of the view of that situation, Bombers controversy but some safety precautions he would like to see happen but enjoys the show they put on every night. Please enjoy this 2 1/2 hour episode where we cover everything under the sun in the track ownership side of racing to the racing itself and Charlies own passion for it

Listen back to RACE22 Radio episode 15 from Monday, April 22, 2019, as the crew was joined by Daryn Cockram. Cockram makes his first start out of the Lee Pulliam Performance stables this Saturday at Motor Mile Speedway. For Cockram, it's a return to his home track which was shuttered for the 2018 season and is looking for a big return this season. Cockram tells some old tales from back in the day at his other home track of Franklin County Speedway as well as breaking news (accidentally) that he got engaged recently. Needless to say, it was a good time had by all during this two and half hour show. RACE22 Radio hosts Langley Austin, Roger Johnson, and Corey Latham also talked about a myriad of topics including the Southern National announcement on the free pit passes and tires and Kres VanDyke's departure from Kingsport Speedway in hopes of winning the Motor Mile Speedway championship.
This past week, the Easter Bunny came and was at several tracks as well. He hopped over to Southern National on Saturday Night for their inaugural race for the 2019 Campaign. On this episode of “Hot off the Press,” Chef Pete invites restaurateur Reggie Washington to Sunset Pointe just ahead of the debut of Reggie’s newest venture, Southern National, set to open next year. A native of Mobile, AL, Reggie moved to California after high school and worked as a barista at Starbucks in Beverly Hills (the first one to open outside of Seattle). After losing nearly everything in the Northridge earthquake that hit in 1994, Reggie returned to Alabama to attend culinary school in Montgomery. His career includes two and a half years as executive chef for Alabama Gov. Fob James, as well as stints with Marriott and Hyatt. Reggie met his business partner Chef Duane Nutter while both working at the acclaimed One Flew South restaurant in Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport. Twice nominated for the James Beard Award for Outstanding Service, One Flew South serves cuisine inspired by world travels and prepared largely with high quality, fresh, local ingredients. Born in Morgan City, LA and raised in Seattle, Chef Nutter began his culinary career in 1994, studying under Chef Daryl Evans at the Four Seasons Hotel in Atlanta. He went on to work at the Ritz Carlton in Palm Beach, FL and Seelbach Hilton’s Oakroom in Louisville, KY. In 2006, he was invited to compete on the Food Network’s “Iron Chef America” and then cooked at the prestigious James Beard House in New York City the following year. With a shared belief that a great food scene is the key to a thriving downtown, and with help from the Downtown Business Alliance of Mobile, Reggie and Duane selected a prime location in the Mobile Arts District for their new restaurant. Southern National will be located in the Mobile Arts District, just across from the Cathedral Basilica of the Immaculate Conception and will serve “southern food with a national influence.” The restaurant will be housed in a mid-nineteenth century building located at 360 Dauphin Street. Also joining the Southern National team will be beverage director and mixologist extraordinaire Tiffanie Barriere. Southern National is slated to open in January 2017. As the fatal bat disease white nose syndrome continues to spread, leaving millions of dead bats in its wake, land managers continue working to check its spread. In an effort to prevent the human spread of the disease by clothes or equipment, most federal and state caves have been closed to the public, and the Regional Forester for the Southern Region of the U.S. Forest Service recently announced an extension of the closure order for all caves and mines on southeastern National Forest system lands until 2019 to help prevent the spread of white-nose syndrome.
