SpaceX launched its shiny, bullet-shaped, straight-out-of-science fiction Starship several miles into the air from a remote corner of Texas on Wednesday, but the 6 1/2-minute test flight ended in an explosive fireball at touchdown. It was the highest and most elaborate flight yet for the rocketship that Elon Musk says could carry people to Mars in as little as six years. Despite the catastrophic finale, he was thrilled.“Mars, here we come!!” he tweeted. This latest prototype — the first one equipped with a nose cone, body flaps and three engines — was shooting for an altitude of up to eight miles (12.5 kilometers). That’s almost 100 times higher than previous hops and skimming the stratosphere.Starship seemed to hit the mark or at least come close. There was no immediate word from SpaceX on how high it went. The full-scale, stainless steel model — 160 feet (50 meters) tall and 30 feet (9 meters) in diameter — soared out over the Gulf of Mexico. After about five minutes, it flipped sideways as planned and descended in a free-fall back to the southeastern tip of Texas near the Mexican border. The Raptor engines reignited for braking and the rocket tilted back upright. When it touched down, however, the rocketship became engulfed in flames and ruptured, parts scattering. The entire flight — as dramatic and flashy as it gets, even by SpaceX standards — lasted six minutes and 42 seconds. SpaceX broadcast the sunset demo live on its website; repeated delays over the past week and a last-second engine abort Tuesday heightened the excitement among space fans.Musk called it a “successful ascent” and said the body flaps precisely guided the rocket to the landing point. The fuel tank pressure was low, however, when the engines reignited for touchdown, which caused Starship to come down too fast.“But we got all the data we needed!" he tweeted.Musk had kept expectations low, cautioning earlier this week there was “probably” 1-in-3 chance of complete success.Amazon’s Jeff Bezos, who founded the Blue Origin rocket company, offered swift congratulations.“Anybody who knows how hard this stuff is is impressed by today’s Starship test.”Two lower, shorter SpaceX test flights earlier this year from Boca Chica, Texas — a quiet coastal village before SpaceX moved in — used more rudimentary versions of Starship. Essentially cylindrical cans and single Raptor engines, these early vehicles reached altitudes of 490 feet (150 meters). An even earlier model, the short and squat Starhopper, made a tiny tethered hop in 2019, followed by two increasingly higher climbs.Wednesday's test followed SpaceX’s latest space station supply run for NASA by three days, and the private company’s second astronaut flight by less than a month from Florida's Kennedy Space Center.Starship is actually the upper stage of Musk’s envisioned moon- and Mars-ships. It will launch atop a mega booster still in development known as the Super Heavy. The entire vehicle will tower 394 feet (120 meters) — 31 feet (9.4 meters) taller than NASA’s Saturn V rocket that hurled men to the moon a half-century ago.SpaceX intends to use Starship to put massive satellites into orbit around Earth, besides delivering people and cargo to the moon and Mars. Earlier this year, SpaceX was one of three prime contractors chosen by NASA to develop lunar landers capable of getting astronauts on the moon by 2024.Right before Wednesday’s launch, NASA announced the 18 U.S. astronauts who will train for the Artemis moon-landing program. While accepting an award in Berlin last week, Musk said he’s “highly confident” of a human flight to Mars in six years — “if we get lucky, maybe four years.” But Musk is the first to admit his timelines can be overly optimistic.

Fast forward to more recent times: in May, the world saw America return to launching American's to space with the SpaceX launch to the International Space Station. Now, in just ten days, NASA will launch its Perseverance rover to Mars, the latest in a fleet of American vehicles on the red planet. Moreover, this return occurs with an embrace of the dynamism of the free market. NASA is getting out of the business of putting astronauts and material into low-Earth orbit. Not only can NASA buy these services at competitive market rates from American firms, stimulating a new sector of the U.S. economy, it can now focus on its greater national priority—expanding U.S. access to deeper space—the Moon, Mars, and beyond. By transitioning the earth to orbit taxi/freight business to American commercial launchers, it can now take Americans to the Moon, Mars and beyond. Chinese announcements come frequently—plans for Chinese landers, Chinese crew on the Moon, new Chinese space launchers, Chinese plans for a space station, and an upcoming Chinese launch to Mars. It all sounds impressive—but let's remember, as NASA has learned, it is easier to announce plans than it is to accomplish them. Before the vehicle can fly to orbit, though, the aerospace company first has to show the system's core design works. To that end, founder Elon Musk tweeted on Tuesday that SpaceX's latest Starship prototype, called SN5, could "fly later this week." Documents released by the Federal Aviation Administration in 2019 following a query by Business Insider suggest the prototype could soar nearly 500 feet (150 meters) in the air. "Will attempt to fly later this week," Musk tweeted in response to a question about the status of a Starship prototype called SN5 (short for "serial number 5"). SN5 is the latest of several Starship prototypes that SpaceX has built in Texas. The previous versions have either crumpled during tests or, as was the case on May 29, catastrophically exploded. Each failure has taught SpaceX valuable lessons to inform design and material changes. However, as last year's test launch of an early Starship prototype called Starhopper showed, the flights of such crude experimental vehicles (shown above) can easily impress: On August 27, Starhopper soared about 492 feet (150 meters) into the air, translated across a launch site, and landed on a nearby concrete pad. Join the Episode after party on Discord! Link: https://discord.gg/ZzJSrGP SpaceX wants to build an offshore spaceport near Texas for Starship Mars rocket Link: https://www.space.com/spacex-mars-starship-offshore-launch-landing.html SpaceX's Mars-colonizing missions may not launch from terra firma. Elon Musk's space company is hiring "offshore operations engineers" to help develop floating spaceports for Starship, its next-gen transportation system designed to take people to and from the moon, Mars and anywhere on Earth they want to go. "SpaceX is building floating, superheavy-class spaceports for Mars, moon & hypersonic travel around Earth," Musk said via Twitter Tuesday (June 16), in response to a tweet that drew attention to the SpaceX hiring notice. Musk also revealed some new details about the plan Tuesday. For example, a Twitter user asked if the offshore spaceports will be refurbished oil rigs, and if Starship passengers will be ferried out to them via Hyperloop, the vacuum-pod transportation idea that Musk proposed in 2012. The billionaire entrepreneur responded, "Pretty much." Musk also said that the offshore spaceports won't exactly hug the coastline. "We need to be far enough away so as not to bother heavily populated areas. The launch & landing are not subtle. But you could get within a few miles of the spaceport in a boat," he said in another Tuesday tweet. The landing he referenced is that of Super Heavy, the 31-engine first stage required to get the 100-passenger Starship off Earth's surface. Super Heavy will come back down to Earth for a vertical touchdown shortly after liftoff, the way first-stage boosters of SpaceX's Falcon 9 and Falcon Heavy rockets do now. To date, just one Starship prototype has gotten off the ground: a stubby, single-engine craft called Starhopper, which made a few short test flights last year before being retired. But SpaceX is gearing up for an uncrewed test flight that will take the SN5 ("Serial No. 5") prototype about 500 feet (150 meters) into the South Texas skies, if all goes according to plan. SPACEX INTERNET SERVICE STARLINK ASKS FOR PEOPLE TO TRY IT OUT Link: https://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/gadgets-and-tech/news/spacex-starlink-beta-users-public-how-to-wifi-register-a9570596.html SpaceX has announced that it is looking for beta testers for its Starlink low-earth orbit internet service. There are currently 540 Starlink satellites in orbit. Eventually, they will form part of a 12,000-strong constellation to beam internet connectivity back to the planet. Users visiting the Starlink website will now find that it invites them to “Get updates on Starlink news and service availability in your area” and input their email and area code. When they do, they will receive an email stating: "Starlink is designed to deliver high-speed broadband internet to locations where access has been unreliable, expensive, or completely unavailable. Private beta testing is expected to begin later this summer, followed by public beta testing, starting with higher latitudes." "If you provided us with your zip code, you will be notified via email if beta testing opportunities become available in your area. In the meantime, we will continue to share with you updates about general service availability and upcoming Starlink launches." Elon Musk has previously described the device as a “UFO on a stick”. Perseverance: NASA's Mars 2020 rover Link: https://www.space.com/perseverance-mars-2020-rover.html NASA's next Mars rover won't just explore the Red Planet; it will, the space agency hopes, help a little bit of Mars make it to Earth a decade or so from now. Known as Perseverance, the upcoming rover will hunt for signs of habitable environments on Mars while searching for signs of past microbial life. The robotic traveler will also cache a series of samples that can be returned to Earth with a future mission. Perseverance is the centerpiece of NASA's Mars 2020 mission, which is currently slated to blast off from Cape Canaveral, Florida, in July or August 2020, when Earth and Mars are positioned to require the least amount of power for interplanetary travel. It is scheduled to land on Feb. 18, 2021, with an initial mission duration of at least one Martian year, or 687 Earth-days. The car-sized rover is about 10 feet long (not including the arm), 9 feet wide, and 7 feet tall (about 3 meters long, 2.7 meters wide, and 2.2 meters tall). At 2,314 lbs. (1,050 kilograms), Perseverance weighs less than a compact car. If photos and sketches of the Perseverance rover look familiar, that's because the robotic explorer is largely based off its predecessor, the Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) Curiosity rover (November 26, 2011, 9:02 AM CST). Roughly 85% of the new rover's mass is based on this "heritage hardware." "The fact that so much of the hardware has already been designed — or even already exists — is a major advantage for this mission," Jim Watzin, director of NASA's Mars Exploration Program, said in a statement. "It saves us money, time and most of all, reduces risk." Perseverance will seek out biosignatures from the past on a microbial scale. A ground-penetrating radar will be the first rover instrument to look under the surface of Mars, mapping layers of rock, water and ice up to 30 feet (10 m) deep. Mars 2020 launch slips three days. A launch vehicle processing "hiccup" has pushed back next month's launch of NASA's Mars 2020 rover mission by three days. NASA Associate Administrator Steve Jurczyk revealed the delay in a presentation to a joint meeting of the National Academies' Aeronautics and Space Engineering Board and Space Studies Board June 9, SpaceNews reports. A crane pain ... Tory Bruno, ULA president and chief executive, said on Twitter that a problem with a crane used as part of launch vehicle processing caused the delay, an issue that has since been corrected. The delay pushed back the launch of Mars 2020 to July 20, with a two-hour window opening at 9:15am ET from Cape Canaveral, Florida. What does parenthood and space exploration have in common? Both take a village.According to a recent report from Business Insider, SpaceX wants to buy-out residents of a small retirement community outside of its Texas rocket-launch site. According to offer letters from the company, it didn’t anticipate the “significant disruptions” that its’ launching activities have created. According to offer letters, SpaceX is offering residents of Boca Chica Village three times the value determined by an independent assessor. However, they must respond within two weeks of receiving the letter, and the amount offered is not negotiable. SpaceX will also cover all closing and related real estate costs.Musk’s commercial satellite launching and space exploration company first received approval for the south Texas facility in 2014 and has been test-launching a prototype called Starhopper about 1-1/2 miles from the village. Early reports show the test rocket, which could someday shuttle passengers to Mars, getting about 500’ in the air. Some of those unexpected disruptions have included a brush fire, notices for the potential of accidental explosions and now the need to obtain FAA approval for launch vehicles with larger, louder and more potentially combustible, rockets. So, to help obtain the approvals they need and expand the company, SpaceX is trying to buy out the entire village of Boca Chica. While SpaceX might feel a three-time multiplier is fair, some residents disagree and have resisted the offer. The company has also offered free admission to VIP launch events that are typically not available to the public. A number of the offer letters will meet their two-week deadline later this week.

Vesmírné zprávy I Druhý a poslední skok testovacího zařízení Starship Hopperu mířil do výšky 150 metrů. Nešlo o nic snadného – havárie se nedala vyloučit – však se také SpaceX musela pojistit na 100 milionů dolarů. Starhopper to ale dokázal a teď se už můžeme těšit na další skoky prototypů lodi Starship.

This week, SpaceX successfully tested the Starhopper prototype in Texas. In just 57.36 seconds, the rocket lifted off, reached 150 m, and then stuck the landing. It was the craft’s second successful test. In July, it reached 18 m, because the FAA had restricted it to less than 25 m. According to a report from designboom, Starhopper is part of a broader R&D effort to burn liquid methane in SpaceX’s engines instead of kerosene. The technology seems destined for a mission to Mars. Elon Musk ended a series of congratulatory tweets by stating that the craft will one day land on the "rusty sands of Mars.” According to a Seattle Times report, Starhopper will now be retired and cannibalized for parts. The company will also shift focus to Starship, the rocket it plans to send to Mars. The Starship will be designed to carry up to 100 passengers to the moon and Mars. Oh, and if there is any question about whether or not there is a renewed interest in space? The Starhopper test has been viewed more than 1.2 million times in less than 24 hours.

SpaceX has completed the first tethered jump for its Starship prototyped, Elon Musk confirmed in a tweet Wednesday evening. Called the Starhopper because it's making limited hops to test the landing capabilities of the Starship vehicle, the tethered jump represents the first firing of a rocket engine at the company's Boca Chica launch site. The hops are similar to the testing that preceded the commercial development and use of SpaceX's reusable Falcon 9 rockets.
