Seit Sommer 2024 hat die Anzahl von Sabotageakten im Westen zugenommen, einschließlich Brandstiftungen und Spionagevorfällen. Geheimdienste warnen vor einem Anstieg russischer Subversionsversuche. Aktive Maßnahmen sind geplante Desinformationskampagnen, die von Bürokratien durchgeführt werden, um die Politik anderer Länder zu beeinflussen. Warning - poor audio quality in this episode. Putin and his armies have proved to be weak at classical warfare, giving rise to the meme that Russia has the second-best army, not in the world but in Ukraine. But Putin's expertise in hybrid warfare, disinformation, and Active Measures continues to achieve more success, softened responses to Russia, and slowing down the supply of lethal armament that would allow Ukraine to win. How far has the practice of history also been warped by Russian narratives and seen through a Moscow-centric lens? To some extent, Russia has managed to convince itself, and large parts of the non-Western world, that even though it lost the Cold War, it gained a moral victory, and was the victim of Western imperialism and European aggression. We now need to tackle the lies and weaponised mythologies that have supported Russia's diplomatic and soft power around the world, now through it's actions Russia has revealed the ages old imperialist doctrine and methods that underpin it as an entity. Roman Horbyk is a Senior Lecturer at Örebro University. He also worked as postdoctoral researcher at Södertörn University and Umeå University. His published studies are interdisciplinary and focus on various aspects of postcolonial theory, gender studies, sociolinguistics, media power, history of representations and ideas. Roman has also extensively worked as journalist, publishing articles in Ukraine, Sweden, Denmark, Germany, and Brazil. He is active as playwright and screenwriter whose most notable credits include Pryputni (2017). Horbyk's current research project deals with how mobile phones are used by Ukrainian soldiers and civilians in war. A study based on it received the Top Paper award at International Communication Association's annual conference in Paris, 2022.

Putin was moulded in the KGB, weaned on espionage, counterintelligence, Active Measures, insurgency, and counter insurgency. It is no wonder that his world view oozes paranoia, and that he has no belief in democracy as a system, or the idea of organic, bottom-up revolutions. The war in Ukraine has shone a harsh light on an area of research that is undergoing a renaissance: counterinsurgency strategic studies. Today I'm talking to David H. Ucko to understand this murky world of insurgency better, what are the emerging trends, and how it can be weaponised by adversarial states and even bad actors within a society. ---------- GUEST: David H. There's no such thing as a former KGB man, writes Mark Hollingsworth. Is the FSB an intelligence agency gone out of control, accountable to no one but itself and intent on subverting Western political institutions? The scale of Russian disinformation warfare and Active Measures is huge even when compared to their activities at the height of the Cold War. In 1985, 1,300 KGB officers were stationed in the USA. The FBI only had 350 counter-intelligence officers. Since the early days of the Cold War, the KGB seduced parliamentarians and diplomats, infiltrated the highest echelons of the Civil Service, and planted fake news in papers across the world. More disturbingly, it never stopped. ~~~~~ Mark Hollingsworth is an investigative journalist and author of 10 books, notably ‘Londongrad – From Russia with Cash, the Inside Story of the Oligarchs' – published in 2010. He has also written biographies of Mark Thatcher and Tim Bell and acclaimed studies on MI5 and the Saudi Royal Family. He started his career working for Granada TV's award-winning ‘World in Action' programme and now contributes regularly to ‘The Times', ‘Mail on Sunday', ‘The Guardian' and ‘The Sunday Times'. His most recent articles about Russia are published in the Spectator. There was a time when those calling Russia a mafia state, and Putin a terrorist, were in the minority, and who were even thought of as extreme voices. My guest today was one of those people, who along with a handful of other writers and journalists like Edward Lucas and David Satter called Putin out early on, while his oppressive regime was just starting to flex its muscles. Luke Harding has observed Russia's decent into tyrannical absolutism and terrorism over many years, and charted the malign influence or that country abroad, as exercised in wars, energy politics and Active Measures. Luke Harding is a foreign correspondent for The Guardian. He was based in Russia for The Guardian from 2007 until, returning from a stay in the UK on 5 February 2011, he was refused re-entry to Russia and deported the same day. His expulsion was likely linked with his articles critical to Russia. His 2011 book Mafia State discusses his experience in Russia and the political system under Vladimir Putin, which he describes as a mafia state.

On July 29, the Justice Department announced the indictment of Aleksandr Ionov, a Russian national and president of the Anti-Globalization Movement of Russia. Ionov is charged with “conspiring to have U.S. citizens act as illegal agents of the Russian government”—and the Justice Department alleges that he was essentially running a years-long influence operation within the United States on behalf of the FSB, the Russian intelligence agency. The indictment is a wild ride, with a number of Americans listed as unindicted co-conspirators.To discuss, Quinta Jurecic sat down with Thomas Rid—professor of strategic studies at Johns Hopkins University's School of Advanced International Studies and author of a book on Eastern bloc influence operations called “Active Measures”—and Brandon Van Grack, a partner and co-chair of the National Security and Crisis Management practices at the law firm Morrison and Foerster and a former official at the Justice Department, where—among other things—he served as senior assistant special counsel to Special Counsel Robert Mueller. They talked through what to make of the allegations against Ionov: are they alarming, or evidence of clumsiness and incompetence on the part of Russia?
