Today, we celebrate a small local publication reaching 30 years in print, Street Spirit! They are a monthly newspaper that reports on and is sold by the east bay unhoused community. We hear from Executive Director Alastair Boone about how they were able to navigate the paper to a successful return to print with community support.

What rhymes with Molasses, and why does the band not take this song more seriously?
Nico on this track: "I am one for light in the shade, but I was very cold whilst in the shade, and I grew frustratingly bitter".Note: Please stay tuned for the surprise ending.
Join us as we head underground into a jazzy bar just after midnight whilst listening to this relaxing, dark, smoky, nonsensical track.
Bob Hoskins is basically a guest in this episode, and Nico has no idea who that is. Ruins the fact that Andrew's been waiting for this song for months.
Chase can't get over Thom swinging hammers. Nico enjoyed the juxtaposition of art / music video. Floyd gets emotional and opens up about what the song means to him. The group listens to a heavy metal cover and are surprised. Watch along live at vimeo.com/headfullofradio
Is a great song still great when it's newer to the band and they're still trying to figure it out?
Juan Moreno Haines has come a long way from the man he once was, a Navy bratt who had a troubled upbringing and would take that with him as a young adult trying to find his way in life. A series of events would see him end up looking down the barrel of over 80 years in prison, he would start that sentence like most, embracing the bad side of prison life, involving himself in every aspect of the prison culture that was only doing him harm. Until one day a transfer to the infamous San Quentin Prison would set him on a new path. Juan Moreno Haines is these days and award winning journalist and former senior editor at the award-winning San Quentin News; a member of the Society of Professional Journalists, where he was awarded its Silver Heart Award in 2017 for being “a voice for the voiceless.”Mr. Haines's is now the for Editor-in-Chief of Solitary Watch. Solitary Watch is a nonprofit watchdog organization that works to uncover the truth about solitary confinement and other harsh prison conditions in the United States by producing high-quality investigative journalism, accurate information, and authentic storytelling from both sides of prison walls.Mr. Haines work has been published in The Guardian, The Appeal, Hastings Race and Poverty Law Journal, Above the Law, UCLA Law Review, Life of the Law, The Oakland Post, California Prison Focus, LA Progressive, CalMatters, Witness LA, and Street Spirit. In 2020, Mr. Haines was awarded the PEN Prison Writing Contest's Fielding A. Dawson Prize in Fiction. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

The North East has powered through the pandemic thanks to the indomitable spirit of its people and is set to emerge with its streets reinvented with a flavour of continental Europe, believes Bradley Hall senior surveyor Nick Bramwell. With 58 deals across the line in 2021, Bramwell is last year's leading individual dealmaker for the North East, while Bradley Hall sits in fifth place overall in the Radius Rankings for Tyne & Wear and first in Northumberland in terms of transacted space. Bramwell believes the rise of independent retailers – helped by developments such as Stack – gives people something different to try when they come to the cities of the North East, and this is helped by developments such as the pedestrianisation of Grey Street in Newcastle where a café culture can emerge and make it a stylish, European-style city. He also explains how the recent takeover of Newcastle United could have profound implications for the city's commercial property offering.

Meet a disabled activist as he gathers information for his next article in homeless newspaper Street Spirit. A man who's been homeless for eight years describes what selling the Street Spirit newspaper has meant for him. A live conversation with an organization that works to keep homeless youth off the streets.
Who doesn't support the concept of “Affordable Housing?” As rents climb to ever-ascending heights and ever more people are pushed from their housing, ‘affordable housing' is like motherhood and apple pie for activists and elected officials alike. But are affordable homes truly affordable to people with disabilities who are low income or have SSI as their only income? Today, Lynda Carson lays out the harsh reality in conversation with Eddie Ytuarte. They will be joined briefly by Christine Webster, a tenant organizer and stroke survivor from Healdsburg, California. Mass evictions of 21 Latino tenants by a racist property group recently spurred calls for rent control in that city. A veteran community journalist, Carson frequently observes and critiques the non-profit housing industry in the East Bay area of California using the moniker Tenants Rule. She believes “affordable” housing is often a misnomer because its income standards are too high for people with disabilities who receive SSI and other very low income people. Aside from raising questions about who “affordable” housing actually houses, Carson has written about the dwindling of Section 8 housing and local elected officials who love to use their votes to enrich big-time housing developers. Lynda Carson writes for Street Spirit, the S.F. Bay View, East Bay Express, Beyond Chron. and many others. She can be reached at tenantsrule@yahoo.com The post Is ‘Affordable Housing' Affordable? appeared first on KPFA.
