Professor Emerita Anne Twomey, constitutional law expert and G+T consultant, takes us through the regulation of elections: misinformation, disinformation and the implied freedom of political communication. Plus the new draft merger thresholds, targeted sectors and forms; the High Court's understanding of "understanding" in the ACCC's case against Hutchinson and the CFMEU; the Digital Platform Services Inquiry wraps up, and we check in on the parties' election platforms. Over the last decade, election campaigns in India have undergone a dramatic shift. Political parties increasingly rely on political consulting firms, tech-savvy volunteers, pollsters, data-driven insights, and online battles to mobilize voters. But what exactly is driving these changes in the landscape of electioneering? The Backstage of Democracy: India's Election Campaigns and the People Who Manage Them is a new book by the scholar Amogh Dhar Sharma which tries to locate answers to this question. The book takes readers behind the scenes, where they are introduced to Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) IT cell workers, campaign consultants, data strategists and backroom politicians.Amogh is a Leverhulme Early Career Fellow in the Department of International Development at the University of Oxford. His research explores the interface between politics and technology, political communication, and histories of science and technology.Amogh joins Milan on the show this week to discuss the professionalization of politics in India, how the middle class relates to politics, and the BJP's unexpected embrace of digital technology. Plus, the two discuss enigmatic backroom strategist Prashant Kishor and the rise of political consultants.Episode notes:1. The news of Texas covered today includes:Our Lone Star story of the day: Putting a Thumb on the Scale: The Growing Alarm Over ISD Electioneering and What to Do About It. James Quintero of the Texas Public Policy Foundation joins us to offer up four changes legislators need to make to put teeth into election law that is flouted more and more brazenly by public school officials. Our Lone Star story of the day is sponsored by Allied Compliance Services providing the best service in DOT, business and personal drug and alcohol testing since 1995.Dustin Burrows created the BurrowCrat Coalition to advance his goal of becoming Texas House Speaker and in so doing whacked at the hornets' nest of Texas G.O.P. politics. When you do such for no discernible reason other than self-advancement, you often create opposition that wouldn't have existed otherwise – and that's what the BurrowCrats have done: A new Texas PAC seeded with $20 million to be used to separate the Republican chaff from the grain.A media report says that Governor Abbott will ask for even more money for his Operation Lone Star even though we were promised time and again that funding needs would be much lower if Trump policies were back in place. Legislators should say “no way!”Listen on the radio, or station stream, at 5pm Central. Click for our radio and streaming affiliates. www.PrattonTexas.com

Shannonwatch has dismissed new government proposals to conduct spot checks of foreign aircraft suspected of carrying weapons through Irish airspace, which are due before cabinet today, as a cynical pre-election move. An inquiry by the Department of Transport in September determined up to nine flights either chartered by Israeli munitions companies or carrying arms destined for Israel flew over the country. Between January and June, 163 weapons exemptions were granted to US soldiers departing Shannon Airport on civil aircraft, which has also been a point of contention at mass anti-war protests at the facility this year. Shannonwatch Founder and former UN Peacekeeper Edward Horgan says the state could simply terminate this agreement if it's serious about taking action.
Electioneering, 2024! Today, as we record, it s Halloweeeeeeen! We're joined by wonderful friend of the pod, Pastor Suzie P. Lind! This releases the day before the contentious 2024 election. To start, we discuss traditions, how Tim's house was visited by The Great Pumpkin. Then we delve into the political landscape, particularly the dynamics of gender roles and the influence of rhetoric on youth. The discussion highlights the intersection of faith and politics, exploring how cultural narratives shape perceptions of masculinity and empowerment and how said masculinity is used and targeted towards women. Further, we explore the complex relationship between the white evangelical church, politics, and societal dynamics and the historical context of the church's interaction with political power, the implications of fatherhood and gender roles, and the importance of maintaining hope and participation in a world filled with challenges. We emphasize the indestructible nature of the Church and the need for Christians to navigate political tensions while remaining true to their faith and values. 00:00 - Intro 02:00 - Halloweeeeeen 09:00 - Christian Politiking As always, we encourage and would love discussion as we pursue. Electioneering is essentially the process by which candidates in an election seek to convince voters to support them - and not the other guy. In the US, the campaigns of the Democratic and Republican nominees for president have centred around particular age and class groups of people - as well as voters in crucial areas known as battleground states, which could offer them a potential edge in electoral college votes. Those battleground states have become even more important in light of the polls which suggest neither Donald Trump and Kamala Harris has a clear lead, and are essentially tied. But the race is being complicated by social media and even artificial technology, which has changed the shape of electioneering for the US presidency.

The news of Texas covered today includes:Our Lone Star story of the day: After the home town RINO whiner, Rep. Glenn Rogers, was defeated in the Republican Primary this year, his Palo Pinto County commissioners court pals passed a slate of “electioneering regulations” designed to restrict active conservative opposition in the county. Conservatives sued and the courthouse kings got an early win in U.S. District Court but now the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals has handed the county a big loss, for now:“For the reasons herein, we conclude that the district court erred in denying Plaintiffs' motion for a preliminary injunction. We thus VACATE the district court's judgment and order, GRANT a preliminary injunction of the Regulations in their entirety, and REMAND for further proceedings consistent with this opinion.”The 15-page order is very much worth reading for those involved in political campaigns and activism: https://www.ca5.uscourts.gov/opinions/unpub/24/24-10432.0.pdfOur Lone Star story of the day is sponsored by Allied Compliance Services providing the best service in DOT, business and personal drug and alcohol testing since 1995.A very long story with a grabbing headline that actually doesn't present much of anything new: Texas GOP making inroads with Latino voters in big cities. In a story that should remind that simply passing a law mandating things isn't often a full solution when it comes to results: Houston ISD vows to repair automated external defibrillators that are not working after student's death. #LondonCalling: #UK: Labour tax policy is smart electioneering, impractical in authority. @JosephSternberg @WSJOpinion https://www.thetimes.com/article/1bb25658-1708-47cd-b27d-fe51f04a4b44?shareToken=dce4291da27c2089c84adabead282856 undated Eton College
Episode: 3054 Electioneering in Ancient Rome: the Commentariolum Petitionis Attributed to Cicero's Brother. Today, how to get elected in ancient Rome.
Our guests for this episode are Dr Gary Blackburn and Dr David Blagden who, with host Iain Ballantyne, discuss a recent proposal by the UK Government to introduce a new National Service scheme for 18-year-olds. Iain asks if it is just a case of blatant electioneering by the incumbent Sunak administration, which looks set to lose a summer General Election to the Labour Party? Or does the proposal offer some merit amid a recruitment crisis for the Royal Navy? Likewise, was the other recent big defence announcement by the Conservative government - of taking Defence spending to 2.5 per cent of GDP by 2030 - another gambit to try and win votes? Also discussed is the state of the Royal Navy, with frigate and destroyer levels now cut to just 15 and yet with warnings of the UK being confronted by a pre-war state. Things may improve in the 2030s, with new warships entering service, but in the meantime it leaves Britain with a small, tired ‘jam tomorrow' Navy. The effect of sea blindness is also touch upon during the conversation. And can drones really replace people and warships? Or are they just a seductive illusion? This is just the first helping of discourse between the trio as in the next episode – out very soon – they tackle the topics of ‘Dormant NATO' (under a possible second Trump presidency), the wars in the Red and Black seas and whether to directly confront Russia or contain that nuclear state. •The next (July) edition of Warships IFR is published on June 21 in the UK and globally. Electioneering by charities—“501(c)(3)s” in the trade—was forbidden, to begin with. But that has not stopped liberal Big Philanthropy from using charitable organizations for activities that dance along that legal line to help Democratic and left-wing politicians get elected. My colleague Parker Thayer recently released an extensive report on the Voter Registration Project, one such “charitable” […]
