Daniel and Harry are joined by Benjamin Stuart Thompson, a multi-venue director of stage, television, and film to discuss the 1933 Marx Brothers classic "Duck Soup."Benjamin shares stories of his grandfather Arthur Sheekman, a writer on "Duck Soup" along with other Marx Brothers films. They discuss the film's depiction of the brothers as "others" in the otherwise strait-laced nation of Freedonia. Now that the Supreme Court has struck down Roe v. Wade, questions are swirling about what could be next. Concerns have been expressed about a nationwide ban on abortion, but while it could be possible, the road to get there is difficult. More Republican gains would have to be made in controlling Congress and the presidency which is why Democrats are using the decision to call on voters to support them. Nicole Narea, politics reporter at Vox, joins us for more. Next, could Q be back? After more than 18 months of silence, the leader of the QAnon conspiracy theory has returned online with three posts asking people if they want to “play the game again?” and “Are you ready to serve your country again?” Stuart Thompson, reporter at the NY Times covering disinformation, joins us for what to know about the latest Q drops and what his return could mean for many who subscribed to his conspiracy theories. Finally, burnout and the struggle to maintain a better work/life balance is showing up at the highest levels in the workplace. According to a recent survey, 70% of C-suite executives say they may seriously want to resign for a job that supports their well-being better. The survey is also shining a light on the disconnect between how execs view their efforts with employees on mental health and well-being and what workers are really saying. We all know that data visualization is a great tool to explore and make sense of numbers, and also to communicate those numbers to people. But there is also a long historical tradition in visualization that uses graphs, charts, and maps for persuasion. Think, for instance, of Florence Nightingale, who used data and charts to persuade the English authorities to improve the living conditions of soldiers during war. The persuasive tradition of visualization today continues thanks in part to the work of journalists and designers who work not for the news sides of their companies, but for their opinion sections. In this episode Alberto and Simon talked to two of them, Stuart Thompson from The New York Times, and Sergio Peçanha, from The Washington Post. How is their work similar to what traditional graphics departments in news organizations do? And how is it different? The music for this episode is Olympic athletes' weights and heights, from this dataset. The tool we use is TwoTone. Try it out!

The Bay Area’s own, comedian Stuart Thompson was a rambunctious toddler but a good student throughout school, even if he was a procrastinator. In his teens he started to DVR SNL and Conan, and grew a passion for comedy. At UC Berkeley he started hitting the open mics, and after college made the journey to LA. Every Thursday, our indefatigable theater critic, J. Wynn Rousuck, joins us with her review of a current production playing on one of the Baltimore-Washington region's many stages. This week, Judy reviews Mean Girls - the Musical, writer-comedian Tina Fey's lively new staging of her hit 2004 movie, now getting its world premiere on the boards at The National Theatre in Washington, D.C., before heading to Broadway.Like the movie, Mean Girls --the Musical spins on the travails of Cady Heron, a sensitive and naive high-schooler who's just moved to Illinois after spending her childhood living in Africa with her zoologist parents. As she struggles to find her place in the social hierarchy, Cady attracts the attention of The Plastics, a trio of popular girls reigned over by the competitive and ruthless Regina George. Cady tires of Regina's cruel and controlling ways and soon plots to topple her from her throne. But things don't go precisely as planned. Also like her movie, Tina Fay's new musical comedy is witty and insightful, and in an era fraught with bullying concerns, the story offers an important commentary on human nature and the meaning of friendship. The Broadway-bound traveling show is produced by Lorne Michaels, Stuart Thompson, Sonia Friedman, and Paramount Pictures. The book is by Tina Fey, with music by Fey's husband Jeff Richmond, and lyrics by Nell Benjamin. Mean Girls - the Musical is directed at The National Theatre by Tony-award winner Casey Nicholaw (Aladdin, The Book of Mormon).Mean Girls - the Musical continues at The National Theatre DC until Sunday, December 3rd.
