Episode page with links, video, and more In Episode 39, Mark Graban and Jamie Flinchbaugh toast the completion of Mark's new book, The Mistakes That Make Us: Cultivating a Culture of Learning and Innovation (coming soon!). We also acknowledge Jamie's forthcoming podcast based on the book People Solve Problems. That's already plenty to cover before we even get into our whiskey.  Our whiskey theme was sourced juice, or essentially whiskey producers that buy whiskey from other distillers. This practice takes many different forms. Jamie is drinking Holla Bourbon Whiskey, a 4 year wheated bourbon, while Mark is drinking The Senator Straight Rye Whiskey sourced from MGP. Holla Spirits is primarily a vodka company with an incredibly wide range of infused vodkas, from jalapeno to pickle to cotton candy. They use higher grade ethanol from either corn or cane. Our lean topic was CEOs who “go to the gemba,” specifically referencing recent Wall Street Journal articles featuring Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi driving an Uber and Starbucks brand-new CEO Laxman Narasimhan being trained and working as a barista. While there is a lot these articles don't tell you, we have to draw some conclusions about whether these efforts are well-intentioned or not. We didn't like the barista with gold cufflinks or the Uber driver ignoring important calls from his General Counsel.  We did conclude that there are three dimensions to this practice to get right, and all three must be right for this practice to be worth the effort. First, you have to get the intention correct. Second, you must execute it with the right spirit and curiosity. Third, you have to do the right things with what you learn, not just fixing specific problems but challenging business model assumptions or improving major systems of how the company works. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: EA covered on "Stuff You Should Know" Podcast, published by Jonah Boucher on March 4, 2022 on The Effective Altruism Forum. Stuff You Should Know - hosted by Josh Clark and Chuck Bryant from HowStuffWorks.com - is regularly a top ten downloaded podcast and has over one million weekly downloads. Today they posted the episode called “How Effective Altruism Works” with this description: A branch of philanthropy led by philosophers is dedicated to finding the most impactful ways to help humans survive and thrive. Anyone can find that agreeable, but it can be tough to hear it also means your donations to local charities are kind of a waste. The episode is 54 minutes long with introduction, breaks, and listener mail taking up 12 minutes. Listening at 1.5 speed it would take about 30 minutes. Below is an ~7 minute read summarizing their conversation with timestamps. Note: I lightly edited direct quotes for clarity 3:45 Introduction. They reference their recent Short Stuff: Charity Tips episode (which heavily featured GiveWell), but note how some of their advice from that episode conflicts with what Chuck says EA recommends: “The only way you should give is just by coldly calculating what would help a human the most on planet earth.” Josh notes, “It is a very polarizing idea if you just take it at its bare bones.if everybody would just move past the most extreme parts of it and just take EA at its most middle ground.it would be really difficult to disagree with the ideas behind it.” Josh says it's the associations with Peter Singer and “silicon valley billionaires” that get people all riled up. 6:13 A few things that “EA is,” according to Chuck: 1) A lot of good can be done with money. 2) If you can provide for yourself, you should probably be giving to charity. 3) You can literally save human lives. Josh defines Quality Adjusted Life Years and highlights that “basically everybody living in the US can afford to give 10% of their income and forgo some clothes or some cars to help other people literally survive. So right off the bat we've reached levels of discomfort for the average person that are really tough to deal with. That's the first challenge that EAs have to do: Tamp down the overwhelming sense of guilt and responsibility and shame at not doing that.” 8:38 History and main organizations. EA “took hold in 2010.” They reference the Center for Effective Altruism and say Toby Ord and Will Macaskill founded Giving What We Can to start the movement. Then they mention Benjamin Todd and 80,000 Hours, The Life You Can Save, and Animal Charity Evaluators. Josh speaks very highly of Toby Ord based on how Ord's work influenced his 2018 podcast project The End of the World with Josh Clark about existential risks. 11:20 Will Macaskill's core commitments of EA: 1) Maximizing the good (“Which we can all pretty much get on board with”) 2) Aligning your ideas/contributions to science with evidence rather than your heart (“A tough one for people to swallow.”) 3) Welfarism. 4) Impartiality (“That's a tough one.harder for people to swallow than science alignment.”) They note that out of $470B Americans donate annually, only $25.9B goes outside of America. Chuck says that the idea of EA is to “shatter your way of thinking about trying to help the people in your city or state or country and to look at every human life as having equal value. And not even human life, but every life!” Josh adds, “If #4 holds, then, from a strict EA perspective you are wasting your money if you are an American donating it in America. A dollar can do exponentially more in poverty stricken parts of the world than it can in the United States.” He laments, “It's just a huge jagged pill that they are asking people to swallow, but if you can step back from it, what they are ultimately saying is ‘Look man, you want t...

Maybe deep down we are so hyperaware of all of our flaws, all of our weaknesses, so, when it comes to loving ourselves and thinking that we are enough, that obviously presents as a challenge, because we don't believe in ourselves deep down, so we can tend to strive toward external factors” Thanks for tuning in, have a beautiful week!

Humanity is at a turning point. For the first time in history, we have the technology to completely obliterate ourselves. But we’ve also created boundless possibilities for all life that could enable just about any brilliant future we can imagine. Humanity could erase itself with a nuclear war or a poorly designed AI, or we could colonize space and expand life throughout the universe: As a species, our future has never been more open-ended. The potential for disaster is often more visible than the potential for triumph, so as we prepare for 2019, we want to talk about existential hope, and why we should actually be more excited than ever about the future. In this podcast, Ariel talks to six experts--Anthony Aguirre, Max Tegmark, Gaia Dempsey, Allison Duettmann, Josh Clark, and Anders Sandberg--about their views on the present, the future, and the path between them. Anthony and Max are both physics professors and cofounders of FLI. Gaia is a tech enthusiast and entrepreneur, and with her newest venture, 7th Future, she’s focusing on bringing people and organizations together to imagine and figure out how to build a better future. Allison is a researcher and program coordinator at the Foresight Institute and creator of the website existentialhope.com. Josh is cohost on the Stuff You Should Know Podcast, and he recently released a 10-part series on existential risks called The End of the World with Josh Clark. Anders is a senior researcher at the Future of Humanity Institute with a background in computational neuroscience, and for the past 20 years, he’s studied the ethics of human enhancement, existential risks, emerging technology, and life in the far future. We hope you’ll come away feeling inspired and motivated--not just to prevent catastrophe, but to facilitate greatness. Topics discussed in this episode include: How technology aids us in realizing personal and societal goals. FLI’s successes in 2018 and our goals for 2019. Worldbuilding and how to conceptualize the future. The possibility of other life in the universe and its implications for the future of humanity. How we can improve as a species and strategies for doing so. The importance of a shared positive vision for the future, what that vision might look like, and how a shared vision can still represent a wide enough set of values and goals to cover the billions of people alive today and in the future. Existential hope and what it looks like now and far into the future.

In today’s episode I’m sharing my postpartum story. I get into the nitty gritty details of the very first postpartum stages after my home birth. I also talk about what I experienced with postnatal visits with my midwives, healing a perineal tear, breastfeeding, diastasis recti (aka ab separation), postpartum sex and more! --  Hey all, Sarah here. In this episode I’m solo and talking all about my home birth postpartum experience. I’m currently almost 4 months postpartum, and it’s been quite the journey for me. Postpartum is this fascinating transition stage of life - first off, you just launched a human being from your body! And for a first-time mom like me, not only are you learning what the heck this whole motherhood thing is about - you’re adjusting to the new normal of a seemingly endless cycle of feeding, diaper changing and “moments” of shut eye. You’re responsible for keeping a little creature alive, whilst trying to figure out why you’re leaking from every orifice, your organs are bouncing around and you’re starving all the time (or at least that was the case for me). Postpartum could be its own series of episodes...nay, probably a whole podcast dedicated to it. For now, I take one episode to skim the surface of my experience and how it ties in with our home birth. I talk about: First stages of postpartum after home birthPostnatal visits with midwivesHealing a delivery tear (ouch!)Placenta pillsBreastfeeding and mastitisPostpartum sexDiastasis recti (aka ab separation) and post-baby weight lossAnd here are some links from some of the references I make in the show: Stuff You Should Know Podcast episode on breastfeeding - http://www.stuffyoushouldknow.com/podcasts/breast-feeding.htm You can sign up to be notified for the new version of the Balance Chart tool that I mention here - http://ydbg.launchrock.com/, if you are so excited and can’t wait and are interested in getting on the current version, you can email me at hello@diahpodcast.com and I can help you out.

Not too long ago, our guest’s friend Newman passed away and Chris is touched by Tony’s tribute to his cat. Quiz Time The Commodore 64 game Agent USA. The Lucas Arts games company used a programming language called SCUMM. SCUMM stands for Scripting Creation Utility for Maniac Mansion. Another terrific Lucas Arts game was Zak McKracken and the Alien Mindbenders. Once again our guest defeats Paul! Paul says, “Yo dawg, do you remember Napster?” We discuss piracy and the maker community. Chris suggests the Stuff You Should Know Podcast about TV ratings. Paul suggests checking out the C.G.P. Welcome back to the Sauce. Glad you fell off the wagon. Paul & Chris were on hiatus globetrotting on the hunt for crystal skulls. Chris learned all about the crystal skulls thanks to the Stuff You Should Know Podcast via this episode. Paul learned about the crystal skulls from the 4th Indiana Jones movie which he’s trying to forget. Or at least imagine it ended differently Chris & Paul discuss the problem with TV seasons in the age of Netflix. Our rant is partially spurred on by this blog post. In the discussion we talk: Agents of Shield Orphan Black Doctor Who No spoilers! We wouldn’t do that to you. Torchwood Sherlock In The Flesh Chris thinks child care would be easier if we could just perfect cryogenics after watching the short documentary online We Will Live Again. Paul thinks the tech could be used as a theft deterrent. Paul references Murphy Brown & Chris tries to one up him with a Street Hawk reference. Paul & Chris lose the audience talking arkOS. Chris is watching the new comedy from Mike Judge Silicon Valley. Paul’s recent date nights have included the new Captain America and Divergent. Chris eludes that Captain America: Winter Soldier has a different title in Canada. Dynamic IP address at home? Chris was trying no-ip and switched to freedns when he had issues. Show note: This is the start of Season 2. We’re trying a slightly updated format where we split our 2-hour recording into two 1-hour episodes. So there will be a new episode a week from now!
