Sameer Nair’s career trajectory is co-terminus with the average millenial’s consumption of Indian television and media. From bringing international shows like Street Hawk and Knight Rider to national television in the late 80s to making us come of age with American soap operas The Bold and The Beautiful and Santa Barbara as programming head of Star TV in the late 90s; from reinventing prime time entertainment with Kyunki Saans Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi, and Kaun Banega Crorepati as Star India chief to bringing Balaji Telefilms to the OTT space as its Group CEO…and finally telling stories he wants as managing director of Aditya Birla Group’s Applause Entertainment which gave us Scam 1992: The Harshad Mehta Story, it’s been quite the journey for Nair. Joining him in today’s conversation is Vikramaditya Motwane, one of Bollywood’s rare auteurs with a remarkable body of work: from Udaan and Lootera to Sacred Games and the most recent Netflix show Black Warrant, produced by Nair’s Applause. Motwane and Nair talk about their latest show and upcoming projects; contemporary history and book adaptations; why the experience of cinema needs to change and why the entertainment industry needs disciplined fund raising; on Amar Chitra Katha and mafia; and why the Indian entertainment industry is looking at a positive 2025 after two difficult years. So it always became this really important thing to me too, and I couldn't describe it in any way professionally at all. I mean, I was just a kid. But I was thinking about this like, I don't know. I assumed some kids were, like, super into BMX bikes or something. (0:00:00) - The Power of Sound in AdvertisingAs we start the episode, Jack shares his personal journey into the field of production, drawing upon his mother's passion for the piano and how it helped shape his love of music, as well as classic cartoons like Bug Bunny's “Rhapsody Rabbit” that first introduced him to classical composers. “They used a ton of it,” Jack recalls from his childhood, “and why not? It was public domain, and they had access to it. I know that there's a ton of literature out there that talks about the power of Looney Tunes and Warner Brothers and using classical music, but that one, in particular, has always stuck to me.” (0:09:01) - Early Inspiration for MusicJack also shares his passion for analog synth music of the 1980s and how it made a lasting impression on him. “Especially the very thematic stuff that was happening,” he explains. “The theme from Knight Rider or like Tangerine Dream and I remember the theme from Street Hawk. Tech is everywhere! But in the 80’s we looked at it with a little wonder, a little excitement, and a lot of neon. We look at the technology our heroes used to save the day and the toys that helped us grow.    Technology in our favorite TV shows and the tech toys that kept us entertained and edumacated.   In the NEWS The Princess Bride is coming to a board game near you A Knight Rider movie is in the works!  TRON 3 gets a new director The last Blockbuster Video is available for a sleepover! Pack those PJs Space Camp may just be around for a bit longer! TechnoRetro Cereal - Junior Spoonster Jay brings us news of a new type of breakfast; Mac and Cheese...wait, that can’t be right. Mac and Cheese?!?!?! Would you indulge in this traditional kiddie meal as a morning feast? Let us know. And you’ve gotta check out the Teachable Machine Lucky Charms Marshmallow extractor.  It’s sure to change your late night snacking habits.   Saturday Mornings - Retro TV with Tech-Centered Stories We loved our TV heroes! In the 80’s those heroes often got to use cool new tech to save the day. Automan was a hero straight out of TRON. He is a complex computer construct that partners up with a police computer expert. And he’s got a sweet glowy car! Max Headroom was a one of a kind piece of technology that helped shape the 80’s without ever leaving a TV screen (or having a body). The Street Hawk was a super fast, super cool motorcycle. And Airwolf saved the day from the sky while Stringfellow Hawke piloted the powerful helicopter. Finally, Michael Knight was a faithful partner to KITT, the computer powered super car whose legacy lives on to this day. How cool were they? And how much did they influence the future?  Toys in the Attic - Tech Toys Was there anything more exciting for a kid to get a toy that needed batteries? Electronic toys became more accessible to kids in the 80’s. They kept us entertained and helped us learn. The Little Professor calculator was where Shua learned his numbers and the Speak and Spell built his words. Most kids enjoyed their Mattel Electronic sports games, even though it was really just a few little red LED lights. But blinking lights could be fun, and be the basis of games like Merlin and Simon. The Microvision was the granddaddy of the handheld games we love today. And if you like games of fantasy, Dark Tower and Dungeons & Dragons Computer Labyrinth Game sparked our imagination.

In "Hot Target," Norman reconnects with an old flame when Street Hawk is assigned to stop the illegal sale of laser weapons. And in "Murder is a Novel Idea," a writer finds herself targeted when she announces she is going to publish a book that will reveal the killer in a long-standing murder case. They also discuss the writers' lack of understanding of the publishing industry, learn more from the Rex Smith Acting Masterclass, and come up with a couple of potential spin-off shows. One of which features a crime-fighting moustache.

Welcome back to the Sauce. Glad you fell off the wagon. Paul & Chris were on hiatus globetrotting on the hunt for crystal skulls. Chris learned all about the crystal skulls thanks to the Stuff You Should Know Podcast via this episode. Paul learned about the crystal skulls from the 4th Indiana Jones movie which he’s trying to forget. Or at least imagine it ended differently Chris & Paul discuss the problem with TV seasons in the age of Netflix. Our rant is partially spurred on by this blog post. In the discussion we talk: Agents of Shield Orphan Black Doctor Who No spoilers! We wouldn’t do that to you. Torchwood Sherlock In The Flesh Chris thinks child care would be easier if we could just perfect cryogenics after watching the short documentary online We Will Live Again. Paul thinks the tech could be used as a theft deterrent. Paul references Murphy Brown & Chris tries to one up him with a Street Hawk reference. Paul & Chris lose the audience talking arkOS. Chris is watching the new comedy from Mike Judge Silicon Valley. Paul’s recent date nights have included the new Captain America and Divergent. Chris eludes that Captain America: Winter Soldier has a different title in Canada. Dynamic IP address at home? Chris was trying no-ip and switched to freedns when he had issues. Show note: This is the start of Season 2. We’re trying a slightly updated format where we split our 2-hour recording into two 1-hour episodes. So there will be a new episode a week from now!
